"Mayor Karen Weaver sailed into office two years ago promising to clean Flint’s lead-tainted water and to restore trust in government..."

"But as her celebrity grew, so too did a revolt within her own City Hall. She now faces City Council members accusing her of corruption, a court battle over Flint’s long-term water source and, on Tuesday, a recall election that could snuff out her four-year term at the halfway point. Ms. Weaver, who is black and the first woman to hold her post, blames racism, sexism and petty politics for the recall.... But Ms. Weaver’s opponents — 17 names will appear on the ballot along with hers — dismiss her as a political amateur who has run Flint like a fief, failed to engage with the City Council and further eroded the public’s already battered faith in government. The candidate who receives the most votes on Tuesday will serve out the remainder of the term. 'The mayor is trying to turn this into a racial campaign, and it has nothing to do with me being white and her being an African-American female,' said Scott Kincaid, a longtime city councilman and labor-union employee who is widely considered the main challenger in the recall. 'It has to do with her inability to govern the City of Flint.'"

From "Flint Mayor, Ushered in to Fix Water Crisis, Now Faces Recall" (NYT).

Seems like playing the race-and-sex card and being the incumbent is enough to win when all you need to do is get the most votes out of a field of 18 candidates.

Why isn't the governor fixing it? Wasn't it all the Republican's fault?

Without knowing though, it could be sabotage by a corrupt establishment there.

But where in the article does it tell us whether or not she actually fixed Flint’s water problems?

Doesn't matter who wins. The mayor will be a Democrat. The council will be Democrats. Embrace the suck or leave Flintonians.

It wouldn't surprise me to learn that, in an attempt to split the anti-incumbent vote, the mayor's supporters are behind a number of the candidates running on the recall ballot.

All this woman has done since being in office is fly to Washington once a week to beg/threaten for more money, threaten to sue everyone, and while receiving hundreds and hundreds of Millions from taxpayers alone, not to mention tens of millions from charities and fund raisers.

The State is paying for all water line replacements, and unlimited bottle water and filters.

Yet, she refuses to sign a water agreement with any water authority to provide Flint water, even after a judge ordered her to.

Like a candidate promising a new health care reform law where everybody pays lower premiums, lower copays, lower deductibles and co-insurance, with better coverage, and where "everybody" is covered, including low-income and indigent people, all at federal expense, and yet taxes will be cut across the board.

I've seen so much sensationalist national reporting (MSNBC is the worst, of course, but in fact all of cable news is terrible and that very much includes the Fox News Channel in its new populist bent) putting out basically wrong facts about Flint at present. With lots of comments about how the water in Flint is still not safe to drink more than a year later. It is untrue. The Flint water system water is and has been safe. The problem with corroding lead service lines to and inside homes was only a problem for drinking water, and for many months now homes have been fitted with water filters that with regular testing have shown the water to be safe for drinking. People who are now using bottled water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and bathing are doing so because they "don't trust" the city and state officials. It is not because any scientific testing is showing dangerous lead levels.

@exhelodrvr1, the problem isn’t the color of the water. There was a detailed discussion on “This Old House” a while ago. There’s a lot of lead in very old water mains in old cities, but they’re safe today because of a buildup of calcium deposits providing a layer between the lead and the water. Flint switched to a source of water that dissolved away the calcium layer and exposed the lead.

Hagar said...

There was/is a lot more problems with the City of Flint water system management than just the lead service lines and house plumbing, and indeed there was also yellowish brackish water in the system that has nothing to do with the lead.

But the city government aided by the MSM successfully deflected the blame over to the State government and the Governor, and - a real scandal - Congress voted them $165 million to fix the water system, which most likely will go to pay off the class-action suits and the lawyers.

Correct.

Decades of Democratic Party rule in Flint, and in Detroit, created a massive problem. Flint city government was insolvent. The City of Detroit was headed for bankruptcy. The Detroit Water & Sewerage Department, which stretches it reach way beyond Deroit's boundaries out into surrounding municipalities (some (D), some (R)), had been under federal court supervision for a long time. DWS was going to raise rates on Flint, while Flint was under state emergency management rule in order to get its budget back in line, and while Detroit was headed toward a municipal bankruptcy.

The Flint water decision was simply to switch to drawing water from the Flint River (which wasn't dirty but which had a higher salinity than other drawn water), and was approved by the then-existing city council. Due to negligent low-level management, the river water was not given the needed anti-corrosion treatment which would have been inexpensive and which should have been done by all accounts.

It was a decision entirely separated from the budgeting and emergency management. Still, everyone wants to blame the Republican administration of Michigan's NeverTrump governor Rick Snyder. In fact, Snyder's government has trimmed the state budget responsibly, steered Detroit through bankruptcy, and helped bring just about all of the emergency management cities through their financial crises.

Race had absolutely nothing to do with her getting elected in the first place. No Siree Bob. She won in spite of her race, overcame all the racism to win an unprecedented, historic election. Beat back the white privilege and the patriarchy!

Now, the racists and misogynists are coming after her. They never give up. Privilege!! Whiteness!!! Maleness!!!!

She may need to identify as a lesbian to make sure she secures the LGBTQWERTY vote as well. Don’t want to go into the election with the polls so close. Might win the popular vote and still lose. Bye bye gravy train...

There were some short-term problems with water color and chlorine content when the switch was made and some short-term reactions and miscalculations were made by local water officials.

You are correct that those problems were unrelated to lead. It was in large part a matter of water managers trying to do too much to respond to residents' complaints for a very short period of time.

A city water system is an industrial enterprise that needs to be run honestly and with technical competence, and it is the responsibility of the city government to see that this is done.

That's not exactly true.

It is true that few if any Republicans have attacked Rick Snyder directly. And of course I am not attacking Snyder. And it is true that liberals and Dems have been attacking Snyder.

But we now have a state Attorney General, Bill Schuette (R), who is one of the most unctuous and shameless politicians in state history, who is running for governor as Snyder is term-limited. And Schuette has banded together with trial lawyers (D) in charging a number of Snyder administration figures. A few low-level managers pled guilty, and rightfully so. But Schuette's populist grandstanding is really disgusting. Schuette has cultivated Trump support, and has gotten it. I cannot think of any Republican in the state who is less trusted than Schuette.

Well now, that is really interesting, and an example of the usefulness of this board in bringing people together with random local knowledge that sometimes matters. I do thank you.

Don't know what to make of that except a) how are Schuette's odds and b) who is the competition?

I'm amazed that charges were even brought over what was an obvious and presumably honest mistake. I guess the Flint Dem machine has more drag than whoever lives on the Animas River.

BTW you see how enraging it is for Rs not to stick together. Maybe more irritating for you learning that your faction is not the only one with this bolt in its quiver.

But never mind all that, more about this Schuette please. Will you support him over the D if he wins?

In 1991, Sheila Dixon, member of the Baltimore City Council famously removed her shoe, waved it at white colleagues, and stated, "You've been running things for the last 20 years. Now the shoe is on the other foot." After 20 years on the City Council, Dixon became mayor of Baltimore in 2007 but was forced to resin in early 2010 after being found guilty of embezzlement. Baltimore is 2/3 black. Flint is not far behind with a 57% black population.

Memories of the City of Atlanta past: when black candidates took over the City and County offices in the 1970s, it was a joke if you asked for fair treatment from the local government. The new black pols answer is that , " It's our turn (to steal) now."

The most arrogant move in the City of Trees, that virtually has a forest over it, was the Tree Ordinance. To save the trees, they created a bureaucracy that prohibited tree cutting by property owners without paying some $20,000 in Arborist planning fees and inspection fees and hiring the designated Tree Company to do slow incompetent work for 10 times what it should have cost...all done by their friends.

And this was done to a city with owners that valued keeping trees, i.e., it is PURE ROBBERY.

The lesson seems to be voting for race instead of competence doesn't actually improve your lives. Detroit has taught this lesson for more than 5 decades but people can't seem to learn from others mistakes and demand to make their own.
