"At a fund-raiser for the president at his Westport, Conn., estate Monday night, Harvey Weinstein spoke in a softly lit room shimmering with pink dahlias, gold Oscars, silvery celebrities and black American Express cards."

Wrote Maureen Dowd in August 2012, in a column I'm reading because in my previous post, about Dowd's current column, I observed that Dowd had been writing about the movie business for a long time and wondered whether she'd ever gone after Weinstein. She quoted somebody calling Weinstein a "master" at avoiding bad press by "giving to liberal causes."

So let's see what press Dowd gave Weinstein in the heat of the 2012 presidential election. That column — which begins with the sentence I've used as the post title — continues:
“You can make the case,” Weinstein said of Barack Obama, “that he’s the Paul Newman of American presidents.”...
Paul Newman, Dowd explains, was aloof
[T]he president does not think people should expect too much in return for paying $35,800 for an hour of his time, as they did at the Weinstein affair, or in return for other favors....

“[Obama] realized that he could stir crowds while also thinking to himself that it was all a game and posturing,” [said David Maraniss, author of “Barack Obama: The Story"]. “He is always removed and participating at the same time, self-conscious and without the visceral need or love of transactional politics that would characterize Bill Clinton or L.B.J. or even W., in a way.”...

“His [will] is cool and [Bill] Clinton’s is hot, but they burn at the same temperature inside,” [Maraniss] said. “So he does some of what he finds distasteful, but not all of it, and not all of it very well.”
By the way, 60 guests paid $35,800 for the dinner at Harvey's.

There's not a whiff of negativity about Weinstein in this old column, which is about Obama's cool lack of interest in being "a glad-handing pol." The phrase "a glad-handing pol" seems to relate more to going out among the common people. At Harvey's, Obama was ensconced with the beautiful elite. I have to go to a different NYT article for this:
Among the guests were Anne Hathaway, who played Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises,” the new Batman film; Jerry Springer, the talk show host; Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue magazine; Joanne Woodward, the actress and widow of Paul Newman; Aaron Sorkin, creator of television shows like “The Newsroom” and “The West Wing”; and Gov. Daniel [sic] P. Malloy of Connecticut.

Mr. Obama made sure to single out Ms. Hathaway, who was wearing “a silver dress with puffed sleeves gathered from the elbow to the shoulder, and a tight bodice,” according to a pool report by Dave Boyer of The Washington Times. “She’s spectacular,” Mr. Obama said....
ADDED: Other old Weinstein mentions by Dowd:

From  November 2015: "The Women of Hollywood Speak Out/Female executives and filmmakers are ready to run studios and direct blockbuster pictures. What will it take to dismantle the pervasive sexism that keeps them from doing it?"
In her black-and-cream miniskirt and black Balenciaga hightops, [Leslye] Headland was a magnetic presence with a throaty voice and a booming laugh. She had a Nicki Minaj ring tone, ‘‘Truffle Butter,’’ and several movie tattoos: ‘‘redrum’’ from ‘‘The Shining’’ on her lower back; a line from ‘‘War Games’’ — ‘‘The only winning move is to not play’’ — on her left forearm; ‘‘How would Lubitsch do it?’’ in script on her right. Harvey Weinstein, for whom Headland worked as a receptionist and assistant, calls her ‘‘wildly talented.’’
From December 1998, "Liberties; Icon and I Will Survive":
The President's head is on the block, and the First Lady has never looked more radiant. As her husband gets dragged through the mud by bone-headed Republicans, she glows. She looks as if she's traveling with her own pink baby spotlight.

Here she is on the cover of Vogue, looking Hallmark happy and Hollywood glamorous. Here she is making the flashbulbs pop, with Harvey Weinstein and Gwyneth Paltrow at the New York premiere of Miramax's ''Shakespeare in Love.''...

Last Thursday she repaid the generosity of Mr. Weinstein, the co-chairman of Miramax who is a big contributor to Clinton campaigns and the Clinton legal defense fund. As Alex Kuczynski reported in The Times, the First Lady went to Mr. Weinstein's premiere and spoke in praise of ''my friend Harvey.'' Sounding very Tina Brownish, Mrs. Clinton raved about ''the buzz'' around Miramax, and said the company ''has done a great service.''...

Harvey should take the position that, “I was just trying to find someone who loved me for me, and wasn’t looking for a favor or money. Every time I think someone likes me they start fucking Matt Damon. It’s not easy being fat, rich, and Jewish.”

The piling on and the group self righteousness is making me sick. The pretend surprise is worse. Give us all a break please.

I hope he gets pissed and sings like a bird. What actresses threw themselves at him to get ahead? What actors and Democrats participated in his game? That’s the interesting list. I’ll bet there’s a lot of nervous Democrat donors in Hollywood right now.

alan markus said...

In a past post about Weinstein, I wondered how many of those donors were coerced into attending those dinners and giving money to the campaigns, due to his bombastic style. I likened it to the subtle way that employers lean on their employees during the United Way campaigns. In this case, there would have been nothing subtle about his approach.

For the record, Quaestor was thinking what a vast and powerful force the French Resistance must have been given the national consensus of France in 1946 — 40 million Gauls, armed and ready to fight, willing and able to contest every field and stand of trees. Part of the mighty French army had to serve in England to keep that tottering kingdom from falling into Hitler's basket like a ripe plum, but on 6 June 1944, they returned to la belle France flushed with victory over the British collaborators to finally wipe Europe clean of the Nazi scourge. The insanity of Herr Hitler is amply demonstrated by his eagerness to declare war on France.

She does have a point that Barack Obama seems to think of other people as a problem to be solved more than anything else. I would add that this is not a task he is well-suited. His answer is socialism, which is the default answer for smart people who do not want to be bothered.

As for Harvey, I don't think Obama really cared then and, for that matter, really cares now. He was using Harvey and Harvey was using him. The tool was a tool, so to speak.

There must be an abundance of dark alleys and abandoned buildings in Hollywood, else how could the predations of Harvey Weinstein have gone on so long? Think of it — at least 50% of the upper echelons of American society are female, and every one of them a committed feminist ever vigilant against the humiliation and exploitation of women. How did he get away with it? Quaestor has a few theories:

1) America's foremost feminists were so totally preoccupied with the depredations against women by Islam, becoming too involved fighting to prevent a misogynistic plague of Muslims trying to invade Europe and North America to give a comparative piker like Harvey Weinstein sufficient attention. He was able to "fly beneath the radar," so to speak.

2) He wore a mask. An alleged eyewitness, Rob Reiner, said the rapist looked just like Donald Trump.

I do not know that it is the most searching question one might ask of opera, but the most interesting directions for an answer I have been given to it come from another woman, Catherine Clément in her book _Opera, or the Undoing of Women_, published in 1979, translated into English some ten years later, when I came across it. Her answer is, in effect, that opera is about the death of women, and about the singing of women, and can be seen to be about the fact that women die because they sing.

"Why has no one asked Obama how he could allow his daughter to go work for a sexual predator."

Weinstein was a predator, and evaluated his prey to determine who could, and could not, damage him. Sexual predators adapt, and Weinstein did when he pulled his stunts on Paltrow, who could be protected by Brad Pitt and Steven Spielberg. THere was a price to be paid. Weinstein learned to avoid that. Preferably, they would be aspiring actresses. Better if they had a personal problem since he could exploit that if they ever said anything. The Penn State scandal involving Sandusky is instructive -- he abused boys with a problem he could point to so that he could say credibly they should not be believed. This works until the victims start learning about each other (which usually takes years, maybe decades) and (2) those who are in a position to hold him accountable refuse to do so as long as the money and fame keep rolling along.

Obama knew Weinstein would never, ever abuse his daughter, even if he abused every woman around her.

The problem for them is that this line of attack will only have resonance with the hypocrites on the left who already hate Trump. The hypocrites on the right won't give a damn; tit for tat and all that.* Those who don't follow politics will go on not following politics.

But the left needs to ask itself, are they ready for what Trump will tweet about the Clintons and the hypocrites in Hollywood and the media if they go down this path? He was part of their scene; I bet he knows a secret or two.
___
*Lena Dunham admitted to being a hypocrite, saying she shook Harvey's hand knowing what he was because it helped her preferred presidential candidate, Hillary "perv enabler" Clinton. It's doubtful Dunham is the only hypocrite on the left who covered for Weinstein and Bill Clinton in order to help Hillary. Kudos to Lena for being honest.

My kingdom for an honest lefty.

I'm still dumbfounded at learning how often columnists at the New York Times wrote about one Democratic President or another enjoying the company of some guy who I was told nobody had ever heard of before last week.

Except when it's politically convenient to spike the story.

Your despair is delicious, Inga. Keep it coming.

Admitting to being a hypocrite only gets you halfway there. She would do it again if she thought it would help elect her preferred candidate.

Jonathan Turley and Alan Dershowitz would be better examples.

Oh, that's interesting. Especially the scientist results. (I don't understand what they're trying to do with actress.)

Florence Nightingale, when she first went to the Crimea, built her first hospital upon a cesspool. Seepage leaked into the plumbing. She brought aid and comfort to her patients, but it has to be noted that half of them died of cholera. They died of this disease because the hospital was built upon a cesspool. They died because of her. Fortunately, none of this ever served to diminish her reputation as "the angel with a lamp."......I think it's long past time we make a movie of this extraordinary woman's life. It's a role made for Meryl Streep. I like the metaphoral aspects of it. Keep it muted but make it an allegory for Hillary Clinton.

And asked about allegations of sexual misconduct levelled at her husband and former president, Bill Clinton, she said: 'That has all been litigated. "That was subject of a huge investigation in the late 90s and there were conclusions drawn. That was clearly in the past."

Well, the Austrians just elected a 31 year old to head their government - but I'm afraid he's not one of your progressive millennials, so it is more bad news for the Left. They might prefer to keep talking about Weinstein:

"Some analysts warn that Kurz's election will be an "earthquake" for the EU, despite his pro-European pledge.

"He's a 'Haider light' version," said Paris-based Austria expert Patrick Moreau.

Kurz's ideas on everything from immigration to economic policy represent a "complete rupture" with the EU, Moreau added."

Of course, he's an anti-immigration conservative, so he is exactly like Hitler except for Trump who is even more exactly like Hitler!

The interesting thing about Kurz is that he seems to want to reassemble the old Habsburg Empire.

Pretty much Weinsteined out (at this point the Harvey story is like a litmus test that tells me more about the commenter than the actual story); but there's an interesting take on the story by the always-interesting Andrew Klavan, "Hollywood's Masculinity Deficit," on PJ Media (or you can find the link on the Instapundit blog). The final paragraph is:

"Being a man — a real man — is hard. Being a gentleman is hard. Men won't do it if they don't have real women — real ladies — to do it for. And wherever ladies stop being ladies and men stop being men, it isn't Equality World, believe me. It's Harvey Weinstein all the way down."

Cola
By Lana Del Ray

My pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola
My eyes are wide like cherry pies
I got sweet taste for men who're older
It's always been so it's no surprise
Harvey's in the sky with diamonds
And it's making me crazy
All he wants to do is party with his pretty baby
Come on baby, let's ride
We can escape to the great sunshine
I know your wife and she wouldn't mind
We made it out to the other side
We made it out to the other side
We made it out to the other side
Come on come on come on come on come on baby
Whoa ah yeah
I fall asleep with an American flag
I wear my diamonds on skid row
I pledge allegiance to my dad
For teaching me everything he knows
Harvey's in the sky with diamonds
And it's making me crazy
All he wants to do is party with his pretty baby, yeah
Come on…

BTW--Lana Del Ray has been pictured with Harvey Weinstein on multiple occasions and he is telling her that the camera loves her face in a video. She's now saying that the line is "Ah-he's," not "Harvey's but that doesn't make any sense. Google lyrics has "Harvey's."

Withdrawing from dealing with women is the usual option. That way you can still be a gentleman.

Does she have clearance to invoke the brand? I'm thinking about The Kinks changing the cola reference in Lola.
I think Pepsi is struggling a bit with their cola sales since the advent of so many competing beverages. Maybe they can create a feminine hygiene product now...
