ADDED: Some people thought his remarks yesterday represented a backing off from his much-criticized "many sides" line, but I was not one of them. I think what he said Saturday, yesterday, and today was basically all the same thing.

I believe I had family on both sides of the Civil War. The ones in the South were tenant farmers, Scotch Irish, and dirt poor.
What is often forgotten is the US fought a war to end slavery. About 620,000 men died, out of a population of 31 Million. Or of military age per one historian 10% of the males of military age (assumes higher death rate of 850,000). Slavery has been part of civilization for thousands of years. It still goes on in Africa, unfortunately. Not to mention in areas held by Isis.
General Lee I view as a hero, for he surrendered honorably. He did not continue a guerilla war. His home that he loved dearly, was made into a National Cemetery during the war. I wish Lincoln had lived, it may have created a much better for the US reconstruction, and hopefully fixed a lot of racial issues. Blacks fought on both sides of the civil war, more on the Union side.
The US has freedom of speech, which is allowing much of the comment here to exist. Something that in so many other countries, would not be. Hate speech is a slippery path. Something else for the US to be proud of, and sets us apart from the rest of the world.
The current state of racism in the US is a huge change. Inter marriage of races is making racial classifications a historic artifact. 1 in 6 marriages currently are mixed.

Well, it appears there must be a wholesale whitewash in the history of the US. Good Criminey, even William Penn, Quaker founder of Pennsylvania was a slave owner. Apparently, he even returned to England in 1701 with one in tow. I'm trying to understand the legality of slavery in England during the later Stuarts, but it seem nobody is really interested in making a firm decision. I uncovered a couple of court cases in London, but the reasoning is all over the shop. It seems, technically slavery is illegal, except when it isn't. There are so many family portraits from this time with the little 'moor' holding a silver salver with fruit or whatnot for the mistress or children. Also remember that many Europeans were also held in slavery along the northern Med., where the moors used captured Christians as galley slaves until their ransom or death. Nobody's hands are really clean, depending on how far back you go and what you want to find.
I finally watched the entire Trump presser. Trump is just not very good at his job. It was a time to pour oil on troubled waters but he lacks the technical skills that are necessary to be able to do that. Clearly he is never going to 'grow into the job', this was clear to most of us from day one, when he was still obsessing about the inauguration crowd size - you won, let it go. Today it was more of the same, the boasting about having the biggest winery in the country at the end was simply amazing, it was jarring and surreal.

I don't get why people are pretending this is about a statue. The statue was the pretence to gather people who marched through the grounds of UVA with torches chanting, "Jews will not replace us." Trump was right on everything he said. I am happy that he as president stood up and spoke truthfully about what happened in Charlotesville. Too many Republicans adopted the left's and the media's untruthful narrative of the event, that this was all an act of violence and bigotry originating from the pro-monument protesters. If you look at the video of the crash, a couple people immediately after the crash hit the car of the murderer. Now there is nothing wrong with that, but it should make you wonder, "Why were they carrying bats?" Were they on their way to the park to play some Tee-ball? Nah, they had bats because they were hoping to be able to take a crack at some "Nazis".
If the protest and counter-protest had proceeded normally and there was no violence from either side, do you still think the murderer would have driven his car into the crowd? I don't think so.

I have been to more countries than most. I know what the differences are. Haven't been to Europe for a while and honestly it was dirty and boring and expensive when I did go.
Europe is on the receiving end of billions of dollars in US taxpayer support and only recently has Trump forced them to actually pony up and defend themselves. Poor example.
