ADDED: Some people thought his remarks yesterday represented a backing off from his much-criticized "many sides" line, but I was not one of them. I think what he said Saturday, yesterday, and today was basically all the same thing.

I don't think you can really blame the left for the results of the French revolution. The Jacobins followed Rousseau. He was enshrined as a national hero. The ideals they pushed were enlightenment. Their policies were basically private property/end of privilege and otherwise generally vague.
It really seems like they were just really angry with their political class and put less thought than most to what would come after.

Curious about your view of the lethality needed in places where the US government is currently at war vs. that which you suggest against your own countrymen. Total war in Iraq? Afghanistan? Syria? This has been my position all along and why I don't think it's wise to fly any Confederate flags. They lost.
Begging your pardon, the question is not whether these particular symbols are worth defending but rather whether there is a point at which the symbol should be protected. I believe strongly that the Left has no logical stopping point in this controversy.
