When is a facelift not a facelift?

Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough respond to Donald Trump's infamous "bleeding badly from a face-lift" tweet:
"Putting aside Mr. Trump's never-ending obsession with women's blood, Mika and her face were perfectly intact, as pictures from that night reveal," they said in the column. "And though it is no one's business, the president's petulant personal attack against yet another woman's looks compels us to report that Mika has never had a face-lift. If she had, it would be evident to anyone watching 'Morning Joe' on their high-definition TV. She did have a little skin under her chin tweaked, but this was hardly a state secret. Her mother suggested she do so, and all those around her were aware of this mundane fact."
I think the "obsession with women's blood" is fascinating and deserves a lot of attention. It's not just Trump's obsession, but everyone who hopped onto the task of making that tweet the most important event in the world. Blood is vivid and it means so much to us. If it bleeds, it leads is the classic saying about journalism. Look! Blood!

It's very primal. And Trump has an instinct to reach out and grab us in our deep, secret, sensitive place. And we let him! Come on, everybody. Let's talk about how Mika is bleeding. It's like a magnet.

But I want to talk about the fussy distinction Mika and Joe made between a facelift and "a little skin under her chin tweaked." If you've just gotten a little skin under your chin tweaked, have you not gotten a facelift? Your chin is part of your face, but I guess once you go around to the underside of the chin, you're off the face and onward toward the neck, then technically it's not a "facelift."

But I went to the website of the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, to the page "Facelift" and it lists 3 kinds of incisions, "Traditional Facelift," "Limited Incision," and "Neck Lift." So it looks to me as though the expert terminology would include "a little skin under her chin tweaked" in the category "facelift."

And by the way, why are Mika and Joe acting as if it's so shameful for a woman to get a facelift? Speaking of making a "personal attack" on a "woman's looks," they seem to be implying that it's insulting say that a woman has had a facelift. Does Mika mean to lord her superiority over all the other celebrities who have had more surgery? Trump's tweet stressed the bleeding. The facelift played a secondary role as the source of the bad bleeding. He didn't say: Ugh, Mika had a facelift. He said she was imposing herself on me at a New Year's Eve party when she was bleeding badly from facelift incisions.

Mika's answer was that the incisions — which are back around the temples and ears (as I understand it from the plastic surgeons' website) — were only for the purpose of lifting the skin below the face. By presenting that as a defense to Trump's tweet, she is (unwittingly?) introducing the view that a facelift is a stain on a woman's reputation. Isn't that the retrograde, sexist idea?

I don't think Trump is anti-facelift. I assume women in his life have had facelifts and he's quite familiar with the process. That's probably why he recognized the source of the blood.

If there was blood.

Now, I'm speculating that Mika deliberately imposed on him when she was visibly bleeding to see if she could get the a fame boost — a famelift — like the one that had made Megyn Kelly such a big deal so recently. That was back on New Year's Eve, though, and now, I'm speculating that Trump deliberately delayed his reaction until Megyn Kelly's narrative had arced and cratered.

Mika: "face perfectly intact"

Another set of weasel words. Trump did not claim her face was not intact. He claimed her face was bleeding.

Mika and Joe are being dishonest. And are still bleeding.

The point of Trump's tweets that the media jump on 24/7 is to show them to every serious person as non-serious.

That decouples news as an entertainment choice from public debate.

Soap opera women will continue to watch the news, which only they watch, but at least soap opera women won't any longer edit public debate.

Now blackmail? How Presidential.

http://www.redstate.com/jaycaruso/2017/06/30/joe-scarborough-updated-nbc-executives-real-time-national-enquirer-threat/

The feud between Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough, and Mika Brzenzski with President Donald Trump heated up on Friday morning when Scarborough related a possible blackmail story involving The National Enquirer.

According to Scarborough, White House staff called him and said the National Enquirer had a story about Joe and Mika they were going to run and that President Trump would have them spike it if Joe called the President and apologized for their coverage of the President.

I reached out to Scarborough and asked him about it and here is what he told me:

“NBC execs knew in real time about the calls and who made them to me. That’s why Mark Kornblau wrote about contemporaneous texts. I showed him and executives as they were coming in to keep them advised.”

Fen said...

Isn't the point to be made here obvious to everyone? Joe and Mika said she had no facial surgery at the time of the Mar-a-Lago meeting. That is either true or it is false. Scarboro writes that pictures taken at that event prove she had no surgery.

Defining what is or what isn't a face lift is not relevant. So what is the truth? I am betting against Trump.

I still remember back when Chuck was claiming to be a "lifelong Republican", and his problem with Trump was that Trump was the only Republican candidate who could not beat Hillary.

Now it appears that Chuck's problem with Trump is that he beat Hillary, and inspires such loyalty that he is likely to beat the next corrupt sack of shit the Democrats run against him. Kind of sounds like Chuck has gone back to being a lifelong Democrat.

Trump, it turns out, was one of the many Republicans who could beat Hillary. I'm not so sure, with the election data now in, that Hillary -- who I said before the election was the worst Dem nominee since Al Smith -- could have beaten a-n-y Republican.

As for the rest of your bullshit; you shouldn't do that. You are not supposed to be calling out other commenters by name. Althouse asked you/everyone to not do that. You know what bullying is to them? If you disagree with them. That’s it. All you have to do is disagree with a leftist and you automatically become a bully. The people that were bullies when I was growing up were constantly attacking and mocking and making fun of and attempting to take advantage of and usually trying to force an army of people along with them. They would isolate you and they would genuinely try to scare you.

Mika should have added that she will have a facelift when and if she wants one. It is elective cosmetic surgery, but if you feel self-conscious about your wrinkles and sagging skin, then have one if you can afford it. It is important to find a really good doctor even if you have to pay more for it. Some facelifts are bad. You don't want the skin to look overly stretched, which was a common result in the past.

Good Lord.

It would be so easy for Trump to get to a 50% approval rating by acting as Head-of-State.

Studies of leadership have shown, that if leaders show well-timed vulnerability & humility, it persuades followers to want the leader to succeed.

Vulnerability:

"You know what keeps me up at night? What keeps me up at night is the safety of the American people. I think about North Korea or the possibility of a dirty bomb, and I spend my waking hours thinking of ways to protect the American people against that threat. I think about Little Johnny or Jenny sleeping in their beds, and I want them to sleep peacefully because I am on guard against these threats."

Humility:

"I am honoured to be the President of this Great Country. It amazes me that the American people choose guy born in Queens to be their leader. I think about the tremendous responsibilities of the President when I sit in the Oval Office, and use that time to think about how to fight for those ordinary middle-class Americans who are worried about getting their kids a good chance in life."

Or something like that...

He doesn't need to "feel" humility or vulnerability -- he would just need to fake it!

This is all entertaining, but incredibly stupid.

And the blood stuff is strange.

It's an attempt to humiliate by

(1) pointing out a bodily function that is uncontrolled and

(2) the fact she's not a young woman and got "work" done.

"You're shitting your pants!" "A booger is coming out of your nose!" "Your water broke!!" "You're bleeding all over your pants!" "You've barfed all over yourself!"

Inga: "extortion blackmail corruption"

Now change the name from Trump to Hillary. Inga will pull a 180 so fast she'll snap her own neck off. Never once during the campaign did Inga complain about Hillary's corruption, so how can she expect us to care about accusations of Trump corruption, especially coming from someone like her.

I'm going to explain this one more time for the Left, not because I expect them to get it, but because I want a clear conscience.

THE DAYS OF US BEING HELD TO DIFFERENT RULES ARE OVER

You lost the election. There are two paths you can take:

1) You can accept the results of the election and suck it up. Yes, you are going to lose political traction, your causes will suffer and even be reversed. But these things are cyclical. Learn from your mistakes, start behaving like decent Americans who simply disagree on policy, call out corruption on your own side and squelch it, call out violence from your own side and squelch it, and in 4-8 years you will get a turn driving the nation. We hope you choose this path, America will be stronger for it.

2) But if you take the second path, we will match you word for word, shot by shot. If Hillary's corruption is no big, then so is Trumps. If you are going to run a coup against our President, then we will run a coup against yours. If you are going to surrender principle to attain power, then so will we. We will no longer remain passive in the face of unprovoked attacks. But he warned, this path will likely turn a cold civil war into a hot one, and we have all the guns. You will not survive it.

So really, the choice is yours. Accept that you lost and move on, or escalate back and forth until you fall forever.

Mika is no Megyn Kelly in the looks department, but she doesn't have that wax replica look either.......I can't recall any person in public life who ever had his looks mocked as relentlessly, thoroughly, and professionally as Chris Christie.......Mika, Joe, Hillary, all of them were willing to play in the Trump sandbox. Read the Rush Limbaugh transcript.

I know you won't so here:

It was 2012. So five years ago, and I believe it was a Friday afternoon. I’m sitting here minding my own business, and I get a note that Mika Brzezinski and Scarborough are in town. There’s something going on in town that they’re here, they’re here making an appearance. It might have been Horowitz’s Restoration Weekend or some such thing as that. I think it was at The Breakers. And they asked to come by.

I met Scarborough a long, long time ago. He was a member of the freshman class in 1994. I had never met Mika Brzezinski. They came by here and they were here for about an hour. Could not have been nicer. And I asked Mika, you know, her dad was Zbig, Zbigniew Brzezinski, and I asked her what it was like growing up with her dad national security adviser to Jimmy Carter. She said, “Oh, we went everywhere. Every foreign trip he packed everybody up, we went as a family.”
I heard some fascinating stories.

Scarborough was talking about his rock band and playing the guitar. And I ended up giving each of them an engraved EIB iPad. Do you remember? And they were thrilled, they were happy, and they walked out of here with them after about an hour. And Mika even used her EIB iPad on MSNBC. I have a picture of her using it, showing, flashing it. It was about three weeks later that they started trashing me like I have never been trashed. I don’t even remember what about. And I didn’t hear it ’cause I don’t watch MSNBC. I was told about it.

It's what they do. Just like Trump.

It is just that Trump hits back twice as hard.

You may not like it and it may look crude but some of us don't care.

Bush was a gentleman and look where it got him.

Do you know any woman (or man) who would go to a social event with blood dripping from their face? Even men are expected to clot shaving cuts with toilet paper and then remove the dried bloody paper before they present themselves publicly.

Why didn't Mika? She's upper class. She knows better. So why did she want to sit at Trump's table with blood dripping from her face? I think Althouse is on to something - Mika had MeAgain Kelley on the brain, she wanted to play some angle.

http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/06/what-happened-between-trump-morning-joe-and-the-enquirer.html

"As a presidential candidate, Donald Trump used his close alliance with the National Enquirer to attack his enemies. Now that he’s President, he’s continuing to benefit from the tabloid’s support.

This morning in a Washington Post op-ed, Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski disclosed that White House officials offered to spike an Enquirer story about their romance if the pair apologized to Trump for the show’s critical coverage. In recent months, Scarborough and Brzezinski have questioned Trump’s mental state and fitness for office. They elaborated on the op-ed on MSNBC this morning. Morning Joe regular Donny Deutsch said it was “blackmail” for Trump to use a hit-piece in the Enquirer to extract an apology from media critics. Trump then tweeted a quasi-confirmation of the behind-the-scenes conversations, saying that Scarborough called to enlist his help to kill the story. Scarborough called Trump’s version a “lie,” tweeting that he never spoke to the president.

In mid-April, Scarborough texted with Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner about the pending Enquirer story. Kushner told Scarborough that he would need to personally apologize to Trump in exchange for getting Enquirer owner David Pecker to stop the story. (A spokesperson for Kushner declined to comment). Scarborough says he refused, and the Enquirer published the story in print on June 5, headlined “Morning Joe Sleazy Cheating Scandal!”

The Morning Joe co-hosts decided to talk about the episode a day after Trump inaccurately tweeted that Brzezinski attended a New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago “bleeding badly from a face-lift.” (A photo from that evening backs up Scarborough and Brzezinski’s denial of this.) While the Enquirer denies that Trump encouraged Pecker to investigate the MSNBC hosts, Trump himself has pushed the story publicly. Last August, he tweeted, “Some day, when things calm down, I’ll tell the real story of @JoeNBC and his very insecure long-time girlfriend, @morningmika. Two clowns!”"

I liked the quote by Lincoln about Grant: "I can not spare this man. He fights." That is why I think it likely that the 2020 election won't be close. Trump is a street fighter, and that is what the right, the Republicans, have needed for a generation now. Like Grant, he takes the fight to the enemy. And, make no mistake, Mika has always been the enemy. She was raised that way, and Joe joined them.

Strategically, I think that it could be argued, that Crooked Hillary, in ignoring working class whites and their needs, has effectively destroyed the future of the Dem party for the next decade or so. Working class have always been the fighters, the brawlers, esp as compared to the upper middle class, long time the center of the Republican Party. I have little doubt that my late mother, descended from a long line of Republcans, all the way back to Lincoln's 1860 election, would have been appalled by Trump, and probably would have voted for solidly middle class raised Crooked Hillary. But, a lot of conservatives have been looking for a fighter to lead them, and getting more and more fed up with the sort of Turn the Other Cheek niceness and appeasement they have seen in so many of the Republican leaders. GW Bush let his second term be destroyed by the Dems and their MSM arm by being too nice, acting Presidential, and above the fight. Romney, too, lost in part by being too nice. As we have seen with the Dems/MSM taking on Trump - they aren't nice people. Politics, for them, is a blood sport, and pretending like it isn't, as so Republican leaders have, for so long, is a losing strategy.

The thing is, is that the working class voters who swung over to Trump this last election don't believe in winning by being nicer than the other side. They too believe in taking the fight to the enemy. They love what Trump is doing. They understand the concept of hitting back twice as hard. This is why probably even more of them will vote for Trump in 3 years, while a lot of Never Trump conservatives will do so because he has governed fairly conservatively. And, what is there not to like? He is taking a meat cleaver to the Obama regulatory state. Green lighted allowing our military to win again. Put America First again. Heading towards energy independence. Etc.

I cannot believe how stupid all of this is.

Bruce Hayden nails it.

Trump is locking down, and I do mean locking down, key voter blocks in the states that matter.

One of the lefties early in thread was talking about how Mika and Joe are one of the most watched shows in DC/NY by the usual suspects.

To which an inquisitive political strategist might inquire: and how many "divisions of voters" does that block of Mika/Joe viewers have in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Ohio, North Carolina, Florida?

Answer: ZERO

Any more stupid than the fake Russian dossier?

There must be a new Trump outrage manufactured daily. Daily. It's the only play remaining in the dem playbook.

Yet another lie. I have texts from your top aides and phone records. Also, those records show I haven't spoken with you in many months.

I'm not "working class" and I love it. Career FSOs love it. Here's one.

I just wish he would get his administration staffed but I understand why it is hard.

Some other great Lincoln quotes:

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.

Elections belong to the people. It's their decision. If they decide to turn their back on the fire and burn their behinds, then they will just have to sit on their blisters.

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or exercise their revolutionary right to overthrow it.

Voting for Trump does not necessarily mean that voter fell for him, Inga. You assume too much.

Seeing Red said...

You see as adversaries?

Are you suggesting, Inga, Mika and Joe aren't adversaries?
