Clinton Campaign Manager Robby Mook floats the conspiracy theory: Russians hacked the DNC emails for the purpose of helping Trump.

On "State of the Union" this morning:
TAPPER: So, I have to ask, what is the reaction of the Clinton campaign to these DNC leaked e-mails suggesting that top officials, including the CFO there, were actively discussing ways to hurt Bernie Sanders in the primaries?

MOOK: Well, I think the DNC needs to look into this and take appropriate action, and I'm sure that they will. What's disturbing to us is that we -- experts are telling us that Russian state actors broke into the DNC, stole these e-mails. And other experts are now saying that the Russians are releasing these e- mails for the purpose of actually helping Donald Trump. I don't think it's coincidental that these e-mails were released on the eve of our convention here. And that's disturbing. And I think we need to be concerned about that. I think we need to be concerned that we also saw last week at the Republican Convention that Trump and his allies made changes to the Republican platform to make it more pro-Russian. And we saw him talking about how NATO shouldn't intervene to defend -- necessarily should intervene to defend our Eastern European allies if they are attacked by Russia. So, I think, when you put all this together, it's a disturbing picture. And I think voters need to reflect on that.

TAPPER: What evidence is there that the Russians were behind this in terms of the hacking or in terms of the timing by WikiLeaks?

MOOK: Well, we need to let the experts speak on this. It's been reported on in the press that the -- that the hackers that got into the DNC are very likely by to be working in coordination with Russia. And, again, I think it's -- if the Russians in fact had these e-mails, again, I don't think it's very coincidental that they are being released at this time to create maximum damage on Hillary Clinton and to help Donald Trump.

TAPPER: But it is a very, very strong charge that you're leveling here. You're basically suggesting that Russians hacked into the DNC and now are releasing these files through WikiLeaks to help elect Donald Trump.

MOOK: Well, this isn't my assertion. There are a number of experts that are asserting this. I think we need to get to the bottom of these facts. But that is what experts are telling us. Experts have said that it is the Russians that, in fact, went in and took these e-mails. And then, if they are the ones who took them, we have to infer that they are the ones then releasing them....
He's just passing along the theory he heard from some "experts." Go ask them if you want some details.

Paul Manafort did a good job rebutting this with Stephanopoulos- he just said let's focus on what's in the E-Mails. Clearly, the DNC rigged the primaries against Bernie, which is what Trump has been saying before the E-Mails were leaked.

Funny how "expert" Journalist jack tapper never thought of asking "expert" politico Mook, precisely WHO those "experts" were.

Because then other "expert" journalists could asked the "experts" why they told Clinton campaign the Russkies were behind it.

But then I'm just average joe and not an "expert".

Rob said...

Mook is too dumb to live in America. Not for trying to smear Trump; that's the Clinton playbook. No, he's dumb for bringing up the possibility that the Russians hacked the DNC's server, leading inevitably to the issue of whether they hacked Hillary's server.

So immediately the narrative changes from what was in the Emails to who was actually behind the leaks. As though that somehow lessens the gravity of the words themselves.

Good luck with that.

If a criminal testifies against another criminal with bad motives, does that show that the testimony is false? Of course any leak of an e-mail is motivated. But it seemingly was the Democratic Party's officers who sent the e-mails that were leaked.

Eugene Rumer, a former analyst on the National Intelligence Council who left in 2014, said that, if the accusation is true, “the implication is troublesome, no question about it.”

One possibility is the Russians are trying in some way to influence the election outcome and perhaps promote Trump by embarrassing Clinton. If that is the case, “it suggests the kind of misunderstanding of American domestic politics. To think that they can affect the outcome in a country of over 300 million people, with billions spent on electoral campaigns, in a country where there is free media,” he said.

Does this mean the Rosenbergs and Alger Hiss were guilty?......The Dems are the propagandazing class. Trump's rhetoric injected hate into the campaign. He was thus indirectly responsible for the recent killings of police officers. Trump is a supporter of Putin. That's why the Russians hacked the DNC emails. Thanks Meeeea (did I type enough e's?).

Horrifying stuff. Why would they even bother to vet (irony lost on the DNC) that George Lindemann scumbag? Isn't his criminal background sufficient make him fatally toxic?

Romney got pilloried in the press for putting his dog on the roof of his station wagon (in a dog carrier, let's be honest). Imagine what they'd do to Donald Trump if any connection to a horse-murdering fraudster like Lindemann could be made? The fact that the DNC would even contemplate using him as a donor/sponsor for even the time it took to draft that email speaks volumes about their confidence in the collusion of the press.

Big Mike said...

Can I ask a couple very basic questions here?

(1) Is there anybody in senior Democrat political circles who gets the need for computer security? The OPM hack occurred on Obama's watch, and the downloading of SF-86 data also occurred on Obama's watch. Then it turns out Hillary Clinton carelessly (make that "extremely carelessly" per James Comey) stored her official Secretary of State Email traffic on an unsecured computer. Now it turns out that DNC Email traffic was not encrypted and easily hacked. C'mon folks. If you want to play in the 21st century you'd best get with 21st technology.

(2) Is anyone besides me and Glenn Reynolds aware that Email messages are legal documents? Don't put anything in an Email you wouldn't put on a sheet of paper.

(3) I hope -- but rather doubt -- that the RNC is doing better at securing its electronic data.

Hill will still squeak through. But for cynics who otherwise should be crying for their country the current campaign at least will have significant entertainment value. The "Russians did it" is a classic. It 1. aggravates Hill's email problem: so if the Russians having this is bad, how much worse is them having your SoS emails? 2. aggravates Hill's reset problem: so if the Russians now want Trump, why were you so disastrously wrong about the possibility of a reset? 3. raises the question, why would the Russians want Trump if they have all this info on you and your minions that they can just exploit to humiliate you, weakening the US prez? 4. reminds us of Progs' touching faith in "experts," even unknown unnamed experts, the same sort of experts who assure us Iran is no threat, Common Core works, terrorism has nothing to do with Islam, and so on. And yeah, what's in the emails is more telling. As it was in the case of SoS emails--which showed Hill to be utterly clueless, behind the times, irrelevant to anything significant, out of the loop, the vacuous center of a grifters' posse.

While you worry about Clinton being irresponsible with classified data, It might be prudent to review Manaforts ties to Putin.

With Donald Trump on the brink of receiving classified security briefings from the Central Intelligence Agency, U.S. foreign policy figures of both parties are raising concerns about a close Trump aide’s ties to allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump’s top adviser, Paul Manafort, has spent much of his recent career working for pro-Russian forces in Ukraine, and doing complex deals for an oligarch with close ties to Putin. And while a Democratic senator has already charged Trump is not responsible enough to receive secret information, Manafort’s deep relationships with top pro-Russian figures raise special concerns.

Manafort may be best known for managing the 2010 campaign of Viktor Yanukovych, the Ukrainiant politician whose ouster as president prompted a Russian invasion of the country. He has, according to court documents, managed tens of millions of dollars for Oleg Deripaska, an oligarch denied entry to the U.S. reportedly for ties to organized crime, but so close to Vladimir Putin that top Russian officials fought (unsuccessfully) to get him a visa.

Gary Schmitt, a former Reagan Administration official now at the American Enterprise Institute, said he believed Manafort’s ties merit extra scrutiny.

Putin's Puppet

If a Russian president could design a candidate to undermine American interests—and advance his own—he’d look a lot like Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, Donald Trump told the New York Times that he would not necessarily come to the aid of NATO states threatened by Russia and would make his decision to defend them from an attack after reviewing whether they “have fulfilled their obligations to us.” It was the latest statement from Trump that was likely greeted with delight in the Kremlin. Earlier this month, Franklin Foer wrote on the frightening ways in which Trump seems to be playing right into Vladimir Putin's plans for destabilizing the West.

Weaponizing intercepted messages should be a Russian skill. All of their weapons are the best made, and the still have a space program.

The Ukrane was stolen from a Russian allied government, and when the Russians took parts of Ukrane back, we have treated them as war criminals. They are outdoing us in nuclear weapons big time.

So why does Obama and Hillary want us at war with Russia? No one is that dumb. So it must be a way to destroy us one more time.

The Twilighters have a strange faith, transhuman traditions, and ulterior motives, but it remains to be seen if their opponents can discern the good, the bad, and the ugly.

As for Russia, Obama's removal of honest brokers from Iraq engendered creation of the Islamic State, followed by his and Clinton's progressive wars, opportunistic regimes changes, refugee crises, and other anti-native policies, are cause for concern to more than just the Russians, but for every civilized society, including in Europe, Israel, and America. If there is a conspiracy to expose the Pro-Choice Church including class diversity schemes, abortion rites, progressive debt, selective regime changes, reset of the cold war, etc., then it is global.

Earlier this month, Franklin Foer wrote on the frightening ways in which Trump seems to be playing right into Vladimir Putin's plans for destabilizing the West."

Thats one way to look at it. Another, more realistic way is that after eight years of Obama the military no longer has the capabilities that it used to have. The implication from Trump is you guys need to beef up otherwise I will have a hard time justifying a US build up.

Paul Manafort made a career out of stealthily reinventing the world’s nastiest tyrants as noble defenders of freedom. Getting Donald Trump elected will be a cinch.

His work necessarily entails secrecy. Although his client list has included chunks of the Fortune 500, he has also built a booming business working with dictators. As Roger Stone has boasted about their now-disbanded firm: “Black, Manafort, Stone, and Kelly, lined up most of the dictators of the world we could find. … Dictators are in the eye of the beholder.” Manafort had a special gift for changing how dictators are beheld by American eyes. He would recast them as noble heroes—venerated by Washington think tanks, deluged with money from Congress.

Playing tennis with Yanukovych at Mezhyhirya might have been the culmination of Manafort’s long career. He spent nearly seven years commuting to Kiev. Over that stretch, he remade Ukrainian politics and helped shift the country into Vladimir Putin’s sphere of influence. It was an impressive achievement, at least according to the ethical calculus that governs Manafort’s world. But then along came Donald Trump—another oligarch in desperate need of his services.

@Anonymous profile #07463996622493339961 (a new profile, by the way),

Did you just come on shift, or something?

After the Soviet Union fell, Western firms scrambled to get their business interests into the newly independent states created by its breakup. In that process, both political parties started to have increasingly deep ties to Russia, because, well, they were trying to bring them over to the Western way of doing things & make a buck in the process.

What it means is that now, there will always be Republicans or Democrats with ties to Russia. Remember that little detail of that uranium deal that Hillary had a hand in?

If you have evidence that Manafort has broken US law, post it. If not, chill. Besides anyone who's right hand (wo)man is Huma Abedin isn't in any position to complain about possible "foreign influence within the candidate's inner circle".

By the way, you posted a string of articles fairly quickly. That just you & google or are you just re-posted HRC/DNC talking points that were passed down to you?

Notice that the lefty press assumes that Trump means to leave the Poles & Lithuanians in the lurch vis-a-vis the Russians. I don't see it that way. The Poles & Lithuanians are pulling their own weight.

But the others? When's the last time Germany spent anything more than a pittance of GDP on defense? In Holland, the military gets the weekends off & military discipline is so lax as to render them unfit for battle. The French have one aircraft carrier. When it was in for repairs that had to borrow one of ours so that their pilots could get in their regulation flight hours.

Most of Europe hasn't met the NATO minimum of 2% GDP on military spending for years & years. European governments needed more & more money for social programs. The European Left hated military spending. The path of least resistance was to cut military spending, & we were left holding the bag. Trump is right -- that has to change.

Trump’s sympathy for Putin has not been a secret.

Putin Returns Trump's Effusive Praise

I am not suggesting that Donald Trump is employed by Putin—though his campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was for many years on the payroll of the Putin-backed former president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych I am arguing that Trump’s understanding of America’s role in the world aligns with Russia’s geostrategic interests; that his critique of American democracy is in accord with the Kremlin’s critique of American democracy; and that he shares numerous ideological and dispositional proclivities with Putin—for one thing, an obsession with the sort of “strength” often associated with dictators. Trump is making it clear that, as president, he would allow Russia to advance its hegemonic interests across Europe and the Middle East. His election would immediately trigger a wave of global instability—much worse than anything we are seeing today—because America’s allies understand that Trump would likely dismantle the post-World War II U.S.-created international order. Many of these countries, feeling abandoned, would likely pursue nuclear weapons programs on their own, leading to a nightmare of proliferation.

Also, Bernie supporters were out demonstrating against Hillary today:

A large, impassioned crowd of Bernie Sanders supporters — chanting “Hell, no, D.N.C., we won’t vote for Hillary” — marched on Sunday afternoon to the site of the Democratic National Convention, promising a week in which the party’s divisions will be on vivid display in the streets.

Looks like they're not too happy with having incompetent, corrupt Hillary shoved down their throats.

And, by the way, you want pro-Putin folks? Take a look at any hard left website. The Western Left is somehow, strangely, incredibly pro-Putin. The Left is now bitching now that we have troops in Poland that "No wonder Russia is pissed. How would we feel if the Russians had troops in Canada or Mexico?" "Well, we'd deserve Russian troops in Canada & Mexico if we fucking invaded Quebec & took it over, & those governments asked for Russian troops, huh?".

Somehow, I doubt that.

DOES DONALD TRUMP HAVE A SUBVERSIVE PARTNERSHIP WITH VLADIMIR PUTIN’S PROPAGANDA MACHINE?

Updated | The opponent wields a “firehose of falsehood” with “a shameless willingness to disseminate partial truths or outright fictions.” He “entertains, confuses and overwhelms the audience” with exaggerations and unfounded rumors. His technique is entirely new, confounding decades of conventional wisdom that says effective political messages should stay close to the truth.

Donald Trump? No, Vladimir Putin, who has piloted “a remarkable evolution in Russia's approach to propaganda,” according to a new study from RAND, a think tank based in Santa Monica, California, which has been supplying the Pentagon and CIA with ideas since 1948. Despite ignoring past principles of propaganda, RAND says, Putin has “enjoyed some success” in his main goal: undermining Western unity, and specifically its military alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO.

His success stories: The rise of Moscow-backed right-wing “populist” movements in Europe, along with Western disunity over Ukraine, Turkey, Syria and how to deal with Syrian refugees. And now Donald Trump?

Of the 28 countries in the alliance, only five -- the U.S., Greece, Poland, Estonia and the U.K. -- meet the target.

The rest lag behind. Germany spent 1.18% of its GDP on defense last year, France forked out 1.8%.

Iceland, which doesn't have its own army, spends just 0.1% of its GDP on defense, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Six other countries spend less than 1%, according to NATO: the Czech Republic, Italy, Slovenia, Belgium, Spain and Hungary."

Any email leak other than from a single user involves everybody. Microsoft's Exchange email server uses MS SQL Server databases as its data stores.

What the hackers took were the SQL Server database files. Well, actually, what they almost certainly did is "dumped" the database files, & then copied the dumps out & deleted them from the server. The dumps are easier to transport & are integral "snapshots" of the data.

Browsing through the DNC email dump, it is remarkable to see how the DNC closely coordinates their talking points with their surrogates.

https://wikileaks.org/dnc-emails/emailid/7722

"...Working with the DSCC, we placed a story in The Washington Post announcing the lawsuit on April 14, and published a Medium post from DNC CEO Amy Dacey on why we were filing suit. The initial roll out generated well over 100 earned media mentions. Among our most prominent placements: CNN, MSNBC, The New York Times, U.S. News & World Report, Politico, AP, Reuters, The Guardian, and The Nation..."

"... Draft op-eds for Native American leaders
Draft an op-ed for the Arizona Informant...
Submit an op-ed to Univision.com from our national Hispanic surrogate calling for an immediate need to move the case forward..."

Many have long suspected that the DNC coordinated with the MSM and outside other groups to push their talking points, but it’s still amazing to see how how deeply coordinated it all actually is (The Washington Post, Univision, MSNBC, Indian American groups, Hispanic groups, social media, etc)
