"There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other!" said Madeleine Albright.

That came in the context not of discussing the struggles of ordinary women to succeed, but in chewing out younger women for not supporting Hillary Clinton.

Hillary Clinton was there, clapping and laughing and — as the NYT put it — taking "a large sip of her beverage." Gruesome!

This is so wrong on so many levels, but I'm going to isolate one: Don't talk about Hell. Mixing religion and politics is a tricky matter. It can be the best of politics and the best of religion. It can be Martin Luther King Jr. orating about the Promised Land. But mostly it's bad politics and bad religion or just banality that soothes some people and makes others vaguely uneasy. But when you switch from religion as uplift — God bless America, Jesus calls us to love one another, etc. — to religion as condemnation — there’s a special place in hell — you've debased yourself and debased religion.

Do Madeleine Albright and Hillary Clinton believe in torturing their political enemies? That's what Hell is. Eternal torture. Maybe you think it's just a big joke or no one could take it literally. Well, if you don't believe in the religion that other people cling to, just leave it alone.

I'm sure Madeleine Albright and Hillary Clinton think that special place in hell is filled with the opponents of Margaret Thatcher. We should all support all members of our gender tribe.

Oh, come on.. you are reading too much into that line. It is humor and Hillary laughing was to smooth the rough edges for people like you. And there is some truth to it though. Most women in their 40-50s can attest to at least one woman along their career path who screwed them, especially when much is at stake and that woman's success overshadows the woman whose support is sought. This is typical minority behavior (and maybe even not specific to gender) and much has been written about it.

I am old enough to remember when, after the hard lessons of WWII, children were taught that nationalism was probably a bad idea.

In fact, I take objection to what Gloria Steinem said more and it was more than insulting, (she said young women were supporting Bernie the fraud to please their male counterparts, (paraphrasing)). Now that is a line that is demeaning, (gruesome!) -- we had a woman English teacher in college who used to say girls take up science so that they are better marriageable material.

Ann,

I notice that you capitalize Hell. Someone (Evelyn Waugh?) was once asked why he did that, and responded, "Because it's a place. You know, like Scarsdale."

Re: Hillary, I think she had better respond sooner than later to the attacks by other women on her husband. If we are to believe all accusations of abuse, then we are to believe Juanita Broaddrick's account of her rape. Period (TM). If Hillary says she doesn't believe Broaddrick, Hillary is lying somewhere. Ditto if she says she does believe her.

Re: Thatcher, ddh, don't you know it! "Ding dong, the witch is dead!" all over London when she died. Do you imagine they would've found something equivalent for a man? I don't.

So, are we to infer from Madeline's comment that there is a special place in Hell for men who do vote for Hillary? I mean, if we are reducing support for a candidate to just gender identity, that is the logical implication of her statement.

I can't believe she would imply something so sexist while saying something so sexist. We should shun that type of intolerance.

tim in vermont said...

You know what Hillary reminds me of? In the 60s, as a boy, I loved watching WWII movies. Sometimes movies about the Pacific war included a scene where a Japanese Zero at about ten thousand feet would take a bunch of machine gun fire, a wing would burst into flames and it would begin a long, whining descent, auguring towards the ocean, where after a while it would crash with a cathartic explosion and splash.

Hillary is a worthy successor to Obama, who took a wrecking ball to the Democrat Party, dragging it so far to the left of American Voters that they lost the Senate, the House, the majority of State Houses, even the governorship of Maryland, for Christ's sake. Now Hillary froze out all of the Democrats who were remotely ready for the presidency to clear the field so that it was either Hillary or the Democrats would lose their last hold on national power.

She would rather see the party in flames, finishing the job Obama started, than accept the possibility that she will not be the nominee, the possibility that the country might prefer another Democrat.

The point about the religious connotations is more than fair, but I come back to the central problem with Hillary as a "feminist" candidate.

If there SHOULD BE a special place in hell for women who don't help each other, which is what I think Albright means to say, wouldn't Hillary get star billing in it?

Dragging hundred dollar bills through trailer parks and all? And then there are the allegations of sexual harassment and even attack. I don't think one can create a theory that says that Hillary wasn't involved over the long term in publicly covering up Clinton's sexual behavior, and doing so for the purpose of political power. This is the negation of feminism. Most women who DON'T consider themselves feminists wouldn't even engage in this behavior - for purported feminists to condone it in any way is unconscionable.

Seriously? For older women to be reproving younger women for not being hypocrites about supporting Hillary AS A WOMAN is disgusting. I'm rather proud of the younger women for having issues with this. It's one of the few bright points in a rather dreary and intimidating election year for me.

Albright thinks that there is a special place in hell for women who don't support Hillary, not for women who don't support other women. If many younger women see Hillary as a candidate rather than a "women's" candidate, then I think we may have actually bred a generation of healthy women.

It all comes back to Hillary! for her supporters. The penumbras and enamations of her sovereign presence in government must be accepted and revered without question. If a rational doubt occurs, a true believer will crush it. It's the religion of Hillary. You just have to take it on faith that her candidacy is step forward for women. God knows there is no rational basis for that theory.

In another month or so, I expect some of these women to be saying that they'd rather cut off their right hand than use it to vote for someone other than Hillary. If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, etc.

I strongly suspect that a subliminal sense of shame over her own behavior in supporting Hillary is what causes someone like Steinem to attribute younger women's preference of Sanders to "boy-chasing". This isn't going to end well for those who are engaging in it.

I admire and respect the blogstress for grappeling with this issue. It is sad that some older women are so denying of it. Very sad.

"A special place in Hell" needs to be understood within the context of the secular Religion of Progressivism. What Albright is invoking is an earthly Social Hell, becoming a social outcaste, like Sarah Palin or Clarence Thomas.

No respectable person or institution will have anything to do with you and every trope of sexism (or racism) may be visited upon your head with none of the respectable defenses normally applicable.

For an average person trying to make his or her way in an ever trickier economic environment, it is not the empty ironic threat that secularists might hide behind.

All Pimps know: there ain't no such Shit as Sisterhood. Any of my Girls would turn on another if you dangle the right trinket in front of them. Rip the weaves out of each other's hair, scratch and bite like feral cats: all that shit. That's part of being a Pimp: you gotta know what trinkets work, and when Daddy is to give it to them...

See, they think they may be some Sisterhood, but -- on their own -- the divisions, they come fast:

The White Girls versus the Black Girls.

The Pretty Girls versus the Ugly Girls.

The Ones who can handle their Drugs versus the Ones that can't.

The Ones that are the Pimp's favorites versus the Ones that are jealous and shit.

See, leave them without proper supervision and the Lines get drawn real quick. And it takes A Pimp some valuable time and energy to get all this shit calmed back the fuck down...

That's why it is best for at least one Girl to have some bruises at any time: it keeps them in the Moment, worrying only about themselves, with no time for any of that Thinking Things shit...

Funny thing about pride (which in my life I have observed and distilled down to its root as being an individual choice of desire, emanating from the heart of a person, to be above or better then another.)

Pride causes (requires) the prideful person to take any group of which they are a member and and divide it with some threshold or delineation. This dividing along some criteria is the first and essential step to satisfying themselves that they are in the "better" side of the division - "better than those guys over there." Since their motive is not to find "better" and share it (their motive is to be above and better than others), their constant work is to detect the encroachment of others from beneath them up to their "superior" state, and fend the encroachment off - to keep the others down. They also do everything in their power to pull down the person they perceive to be " above" them.

Funny thing about a prideful society, no matter what "better" subgroup some of them form, it isn't long until a member of that subgroup is creating another dividing parameter, and trying to claim superiority for being in the correct side of that subgroup.

It never stops until were all isolated in unitary subgroups, and even then itndoesnt stop as they begin to divide their own internal soul and being.

And this is exactly how pride destroys nations. Each subgroup's desire to be "above" is so great that they don't care if the entire civilization burns to the ground, as long as the others don't get "above".

But Clinton offered a message that the collected plutocrats found reassuring, according to accounts offered by several attendees, declaring that the banker-bashing so popular within both political parties was unproductive and indeed foolish. Striking a soothing note on the global financial crisis, she told the audience, in effect: We all got into this mess together, and we’re all going to have to work together to get out of it. What the bankers heard her to say was just what they would hope for from a prospective presidential candidate: Beating up the finance industry isn’t going to improve the economy—it needs to stop. And indeed Goldman’s Tim O’Neill, who heads the bank’s asset management business, introduced Clinton by saying how courageous she was for speaking at the bank.(Goldman Sachs)

So word has leaked of things that Hillary has said to bankers...

It was "worth it" to Saddam Hussein that they suffer, rather than that he comply with other countries' dictates; and it was "worth it" to him that they suffer as photogenically as possible.

And this is exactly how pride destroys nations. Each subgroup's desire to be "above" is so great that they don't care if the entire civilization burns to the ground, as long as the others don't get "above".

Let me give a concrete example: a subgroup is willing to allow an increase in rapes in a society rather than allow their declared enemy-subgroup - their "lessers" - to be or appear right on the topic of unrestrained immigration.

Here's another one: a subgroup cultivates an over-inflated sense that their own efforts landed them to their "above" state, and endlessly preaches "you can do it too" to their "lessers", when in reality their motive isn't at all to help their "lessers" learn and develop any capacity to move up, their motive is to salve their consciences wounded by that nagging feeling that they should be helping their neighbor and fellow citizens in a more direct and personal way.

In a piece written for Time by Walter Isaacson in 1999 entitled "Madeleine's War" (and intended to be a puff piece about the former Clinton Secretary of State) severe criticism leaked out.

"I cannot recall a time when our foreign policy was in less competent hands," declared Peter Krogh, who had been her close friend and mentor when he was dean of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service during Albright's tenure there.

The bombing of Iraq has only entrenched Saddam Hussein's power. The bombing of Serbia has likewise entrenched Milosevic and contributed to a refugee debacle.

More broadly, Krogh accused Albright and her colleagues of conducting a policy based on scolding other nations. "They instruct the Russians and the Japanese on their economics, the Chinese on their politics, the Iraqis on their military, the Serbs on their provinces, the Latin Americans on drugs and the U.N. on reform...It is a foreign policy of sermons and sanctimony accompanied by the brandishing of Tomahawks."

Last time I checked bombing populations and creating refugee problems wasn't a good thing for women. Neither is putting Hillary Clinton in charge of anything.

Bush did not order the invasion of Iraq to end sanctions. He ordered the invasion of Iraq to further America's geopolitical agenda in the middle east, which was to assert our dominance in the region and gain control over access to Iraq's oilfields. Why else do you think we're continuing our criminal aggression in (how many now?) other nations in the region? We want to rule the world.

In the aftermath of Bush's order to invade Iraq, many more innocent Iraqis have been killed, injured, and rendered homeless. That seems to be the American way now: destroy the world in the name of "saving" (or "freeing") it.

If she can pull this off, "comeback kid" style, when even the press outside of old snugglebuddy Stephie at ABC, is turning against her.

Certainly not one time.

But a half a million times over and you really have to begin to question someone's judgment. Even if you think that not giving Albright's statement a second thought is morally above reproach, we have to wonder how accurate that person's calculus is. It's possible to get sloppy doing anything a few hundred thousand times over - even killing people in an otherwise morally immaculate way.

I think you mean something different.

Violation of the commandment: "you shall not murder", is another criterion that reserves a special place in hell for women and men. A deeply held faith pulled from the dark fringes of a penumbra will not forfeit your special place nor will its thinly veiled cloak secure your privacy.

I'm not one to align with Robert Cook's politics, but this reminds me a bit of Bonhoeffer's understanding. Violence is always wrong--meaning it is a sin--but sometimes we are in a position that we must commit violence even still. Bonhoeffer was a pacifist who participated in the plot against Hitler, saying that it was a greater sin not to stop a tyrant. God forgives the sin of violence when it is to protect from worse evil. Another Biblical example is King David, who was commanded by God to all sort of violence and was especially valued by God. But, when he wanted to build a temple, he was told he couldn't do it because he had blood on his hands. He was a man of violence, not peace, so couldn't build the Temple. It has an effect, even if it might be the right thing to do.

Where I differ from Cook is seeing that Hussein was an absolute evil tyrant himself who was causing no end of chaos in his country and the region.

Actually, a better way to describe Hell is "Eternal Separation from God." If you do not vote for Hillary, the Goddess of feminist ambition, you will be eternally separated from her and unable to bask in her radiant presence for all eternity.

A lot of modern theology teaches that Hell is not punishment assigned by God. It's what we CHOOSE when we say 'no' to God.

You're choosing hell, if you say no to Hillary.

Of course, in Greek mythology, a mortal making herself equal to the gods soon experiences the inevitable consequence of hubris..... Nemesis.

Hillary will lose the primary, and then she'll rage in a way worthy of Medea. If I were Chelsea, I'd be looking into the witness protection program.....

Bleach Drinkers Curing Coronavirus Together said...

Violence is in the eye of the beholder. Some GTA clips I think are crazy cool; others I find to be gratuitous to the point of dyspeptic. This is why morality and ethics need to be centered on non-coercion and the prevention of violations against the individual. As the state retains the last legitimate monopoly on violence or coercion, we find it much easier to debate and settle the idea of what is or is not a violation of the individual than what is or is not too violent. Violence describes the feel of a setting or event. Violation and its prevention is part of a much more precise language, which is what discussions of ethics require.

Here's the game feminists play:

1. We need a woman elected Prez to crash the old boys' network! (How 'bout Sarah Palin as VP? Nah, she's a right-wing nut)

2. How dare you insinuate that we are supporting Hillary just because she's a woman. That is sexist too! (But I thought you said we needed a woman President?)

3. Madeleine Albright: If you young women support Bernie over Hillary, you're going to Hell!

Much of feminism is just a facade for ordinary Leftism - the goal, of course, is simply to accrue power.

Zach said...

Ironically, there is a special Hell for campaign consultants who pencil in fervent support from 50% of the population without bothering to ask what that population wants.

Zach said...

I get the 90 odd percent support Obama got from blacks. A lot of people never thought they would see a black president, and then they get a candidate, and he's young, and handsome, and articulate -- of course people are going to go nuts for a candidate like that.

But to just pencil in Hillary as the female version of the same thing is nuts. She's not aspirational at all -- she's old, she's compromised, she's a terrible speaker. She's got her creepy husband in tow, who's simultaneously a patron and a bad memory. And just like clockwork, the scandals start bubbling up just like before.

That's a lot to swallow. Even if you're a committed feminist, it seems like you could take a pass on supporting Hillary and figure that something better is sure to come along before long.

They know perfectly well that ll their "war in women" bullshit is pure bullshit, and the first elected female president is every bit as likely to be a Republican as a Democrat (just as it was perfectly possible the first black President could've been a Republican). They rushed both Obama and now Hillary because they absolutely cannot, will not, EVER permit that to happen, even if it requires electing such corrupt, incompetent individuals that their respective identity groups will be humiliated for decades to come. In fact, to thw Democrats, that's probably a feature of thr plan rather than a bug

What a strange way that modern secular guardians of political discourse talk about Christianity. Talk about God blessing America is OK, God being dragooned into approving whatever the American political class is doing. Jesus is often drafted into the Peace Corps, telling us to love one another. I am reminded of the admonition that in the view of so many cultural Christians, God is the Almighty Patsy. Heinrich Heine, a famous nineteenth-century German poet, allegedly spoke these last words: “Of course God will forgive me; that's His job." The religious lumpen-culture really does not wish to delve any deeper into the issue of sin any deeper than this which makes it a very bad no-no to bring up Hell. The only people who use the term and mean it are Christians who have examined their faith ... and atheists for whom Hell is simply a four letter word what does not involve either excrement or sex.

I didn't say anything about Hussein being "in line due to sanctions," or suggest the sanctions were praiseworthy, although others have said so. In fact, he was defeated and pushed out of Kuwait by US forces in Desert Storm. Sanctions were unnecessary, and were purely punitive.

Oh, reading the history of Albright's quote (it was used on a Starbucks cup!) I came across a fun fact: Sarah Palin pointed to Albright's quote back in 2008! Albright responded that she didn't meant the quote to have any political implications, just to express that women should support other women.
Here, in 2016, she's explicitly saying that her quote has political meaning (since she's using it to argue that women must vote for Hillary). In other words, Albright is full of shit. Surprise!
