It seems so repetitious! The American economy is rigged... top 1%... free tuition....
But I see my son John is carrying on the old live-blogging tradition, so I highly recommend that.
AND: That was a bald-faced lie when she said she wasn't asking us to vote for her because she's a woman. I was walking away from the TV and the computer, but I had to come back to take note of that. Now that I'm here, I'll add that I liked what Bernie Sanders said when he was asked how he felt about standing in the way of a first woman President. He said that if he won, considering who he is, it would also be historic. He didn't specify why. He didn't say "first Jewish President" or "socialist!" It's up to us to fill in why.

I doubt the debate will garner high ratings.
Free tuition, eh? At least they'll get what they pay for.
It's amazing. So far, Hillary and Bernie have created 100 million high paying jobs. If not for the illegal immigrants, they could have settled for 85 million. Anyway, everyone goes to college, for free or for very little money. No one works in plumbing, auto repair, HVAC, electricity, welding, etc. Why should they? No indoctrination in those $100K/year training programs I assume.
Garner high ratings? If if that's what they want... They want to accumulate press attention, gather blog comments, collect feedback from PoliSci majors, amass donations, assemble troops of door-knocking volunteers, and reap endorsements.
They might even get some votes.
Maybe, Q, just maybe.
My 57 year old brother, FIFTY-SEVEN, is on the Bernie bandwagon. I blame it on the fact that he was a union man for most of his life (IBEW). He has a good heart. He has worked hard all his life. He honestly thinks that Bernie's way will help the middle class who is getting screwed. He told me "you just can't imagine it". I told him "oh, hell yes I CAN imagine it. THAT is the issue."
It is repetitive. And irritating. And grating. I totally understand the desire to not blog it. My brother, my nephew, my brother-in-law and my idiot son tire me right out with their Bernie! rah rah crap.
Bernie says black teen unemployment is 50% and the 45 t0 60 age range middle class whites have a lowered life expectancy from suicide, drugs and depression because of losing half their income levels by taking part time jobs now that China has been given most of our factory jobs.
Then Bernie says we have to accept and legalize every single poor peasant person from Central America and Mexico that crosses over our old, now non-enforced, border...because they need it so we have no other choice.
Trump has summed Bernie up by saying Bernie is right about the problems, but that Bernie has Absolutely No Solutions.
If I'm Trump, the next time I'm asked about jobs, I say "When I build these huge buildings, these marvelous structures, I don't need sociology degrees to do anything except deliver the coffee. I need plumbers and steelworkers and electricians and stonemasons. I need people that can get something done."
So the choice is between a confused, corrupt elderly failure and a focused elderly Communist. The country is in the best of hands.

They remind me of these guys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f69PnAUwv-E
She is asking us to vote for her, not because she is a woman, but because she is a politician.
@Karen in Texas
Bernie is right in the same way that Trump is right. The middle has been getting screwed. The solution is what is in question, and Bernie and Trump have no real answer for that even though they are the only two that are running a campaign on the problem.
Isn't Obama the first woman president?
The Bernie Sanders drinking game. When Bernie mentions another free government program, grab someone else's beer, and chug it!!
Five minutes after saying poor people have no jobs available, each says keep the eleven million hard working illegals.
And Bernie inadvertently admits China has lower prison population because they have no blacks or latinos Racist!
"the middle class who is getting screwed"
Depends on how you look at it. Pew 2015: middle class pre-tax income up 34% since 1970. Middle class size stagnant, because growth of upper-income category (over double median) has been faster (so portion of actual "middle class" measured by quintiles (i.e., using basic distribution) rather than specific income standards (Pew method) has much higher income than it used to). Middle quintile net federal taxes are negative.

Not sure about that, but I'd bet he's the first (wink wink) "catcher" president.
I notice that Drudge's headline is DEMS DEBATE AS 'RACE' HEATS with race in scare quotes.
Hillary started this quixotic thing, whatever it is it isn't a political campaign, years ago with the idea planted firmly in her peabrain that the votes of America's women were hers by divine right or something. Then when that delusion began to falter she herded some surrogate man-hating cows on to the stage to damn and insult any female with a mind she dares call her own. Now she's trying to the next demographic she believes is hers to command. Playin' the race card against a Jew.
Watched it. I got nothin'.
Hillary knows more about government than pretty much anyone else in the country. She is also a realist. If is a testament to just how alienated a large fraction of the population feels that Bernie is doing so well. He is not even vaguely capable of running a government. He is the stereotype of the clueless leftist.
Actually, I noted Bernie's Social Security plan, which he says will extend SS solvency by 58 years. So the guy doesn't understand how SS works. Not encouraging.
Hillary should be in prison.
Bernie chaired the Senate oversight committee for the VA. He should be tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail.
The Dems should be putting up someone I can consider voting for, because I'd love to punish the GOP for not doing what they said they were going to do. Instead, I'll get whatever dog's dinner the GOP serve up.
Dammit.
If I understood correctly, Bernie said 2 doners gave Clinton (her Super PAC, I assume) either 10 or 15 million dollars. Two.
But the Koch Brothers are evil.
No email question, no GS speech transcript question. How does Clinton get such a compliant press?

Bernie was asked (twice) how much of the GDP the government would Hoover-up if he was President. He wouldn't answer it. Hillary said it would be 40%.
Jerry Salim said..."It was this big."
In the debate somebody said that Wisconsin had twice he proportion of black males in prison as that of any other state. It feels like a phony statistic. What's goping on there? The only thing I could think of is that Wisconsin jails Chicago criminals that Illinois ignores - maybe the denominator is wrong.
The whole thing is anyway distorted statistics. Till at least a year or two ago, the proportion of blacks in prison was going down, not up. It was going down once crime had dropped. And the unspoken assumption seems to be that blacks should have the same ratio of criminal law violators as whites. In fact the claim was even being made that the law is tougher on blacks, which is demonstrably not true.
There is a real, active, pro street crime lobby in this country, and this could be very dangerous.
Wisconsin also came up in that Hillary claimed Bernie's plan depended on Governor scott walker spending more money on Medicaid. I don't think Bernie's plan could be quite so moronic - or is it?
"Hillary knows more about government than pretty much anyone else in the country."
If you accept the theory that government is a scam to enrich a few insiders, then I agree. She has been a crook since Arkansas.
In the mean time, Peggy Noonan gets it, amazingly !
have thought for some time that there’s a kind of soft French Revolution going on in America, with the angry and blocked beginning to push hard against an oblivious elite. It is not only political. Yes, it is about the Democratic National Committee, that house of hacks, and about a Republican establishment owned by the donor class. But establishment journalism, which for eight months has been simultaneously at Donald Trump’s feet (“Of course you can call us on your cell from the bathtub for your Sunday show interview!”) and at his throat (“Trump supporters, many of whom are nativists and nationalists . . .”) is being rebelled against too. Their old standing as guides and gatekeepers? Gone, and not only because of multiplying platforms. Gloria Steinem thought she owned feminism, thought she was feminism. She doesn’t and isn’t. The Clintons thought they owned the party—they don’t. Hedge-funders thought they owned the GOP. Too bad they forgot to buy the base!
I don't know if Ritmo is around tonight but this is the kind of revolution I was talking about last summer.
By the way, I have been buying gold since spiring.
Over at John's site, yeah couldn't watch it meself. Bernie Say's he admirers Churchill. WTF? He may be more Jewish than I thought.
Hillary seems to be in better command of facts, which she occasionally showed, when it seemed safe or when she didn't realize others didn't know. She actually knew the details of the Syria ceasefire plan.
Hillary and Bernie had an argument about Henry Kissinger. His history isn't really quite correct. Kissinger did not overthrow Prince Sihanouk in 1970. That happeed in Cambodia by itself. And something more than the fact there was a Lon Nol government led to the Khmer Rouge. There were wrong turns in U.s. foreign policy after that too - Jimmy Carter preventing Thailand from invading Cammbodia in 1977, and then siding with China after Vietnam overthre Pol Pot and claiming it was wrong and supporting a seat in the United Nations for Pol Pot and his allied for ten years.
Bernie also claimed that Kissinger was a strong proponent of the domino theory. That was others. In the Johnson Administration. (Actally what Kissinger was a proponent of, was honoring committments with the thought more toward Europe than Asia)
And Bernie added that - the domino theory being because you didn't want China to get stronger - that then he turns around and makes a reapproachment with China and jobs go over there. (that happened at least ten years later) No, he said, he won't take advice from Henry Kissinger.
Hillary did not dispute anything, just saying she can take adboice on specific subjects. She had cited him as being an expert on China. I think actually he's just being used an excuse for her China policy.
When you have a French Revolution, at the end of the day you get a Napoleon to Make France Great Again. Which is exactly what Napoleon did.
There was a question: Could you name one leader, one in U.s. one foreign whom you admire or something.
Bernard sanders said Franklin Delano Roosevelt (we have nothing t fear but fear itself) and winston Churchill (rallied Britain against Nazism)
Hillary Clinton said she "agreed' with Bernard Sanders about FDR but chose Nelson Mandela for the second one. If you are wondering why - it's obviously because she thinks this will help her with the black vote.
Hillary has a problem with a supercilious smile.
The debate was also broadcast on PBS (and that meant NPR too, but I don't think anyone was calculating that)
I noticed that all the Democratic Party debates seem to be aavilable on broadcast, not cable, channels. They do not require cable. Although they do require good reception, something Hillary probably doesn't realize is a problem since 2009.
It was said the Democrats tried to hide the debates, yet they have get every one of them on free TV. And this must be Hillary's doing. The DNC - Debbie Wasserman Schultz - is on her side.
I was trying to figure out why. Doesn't Hullary think debates hurt her? So why get abigger audience? Well, one thing I see here, is that this is obviously to get more poor people to watch it.
I think she thinks this tilts the audience toward people more likely to vote for her, and what she wants is increaed turnout. That must be the calculation.
Sammy is right, but she already had that vote. Hate to say it but the black vote is already in the pocket.
Bernie isn't insidiously clever is he?
Another way Hillary showed knowledge was that Berne was asked this quesiton by how much he would expland the federal government. He didn't gove an answer. I think this is actually more because he doesn't know the figire rsather than because he doesn't want to reveal the number. Hillary said she had heard a 40% increase. She tried to make it sound as big as possible. Bernie had started to talk about health insurance and the discussion veered off mostly into that.
Also free tuition. Bernie Sanders said what a high school educations used to be was now 4 years of college, and I don't think he meant it in a critical way (reduction of standards)
Bret Baier just roughed up Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Is it possible she doesn't know who Henry Kissinger is?
Hillary decided to make a stand on: Don't promise what you can't or won't deliver.
Which, standing in isolation, could sound like a reasonable thing to say. Bernie never quite met that point.
He is the stereotype of the clueless leftist.
Wow!! Project much??
To Hillary saying that when she in the White House she will do X and Y and Z, Bernie said you're not in the White House yet.
At the closing, to Hillary's complaint taht he was personaly criticizing Obama, - and Bernie saying you have a right to disagree with a president, and Hillary distingshing betwene a disagreement over what to do, but what Snaders said was worse - he wanted someonwe to run a primary campaign against Obama in 2012 - Bernie said (when he was told he could respond in his closing - he said one sentence - one of us ran against Barack Obama.
Hillary knows more about the government? Than anybody else?
Hahahahaha.... No. No way Jose.
If she was so dang smart how did she lose to a 'community organizer'? How did she bungle Benghazi so badly. How did she allow so much top secret information on her server? How come she can't name ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT for her term as Secretary of State?
No, she isn't competent to even go back to the Rose Law Firm in Arkansas.
Funny that Hillary didn't mention Bill as a great US leader. Bernie could have hit the Libya debacle a little harder but he scored a point off that one. Hillary's and Obama's incompetent decision to overthrow Qaddafi has led to ISIS moving into Libya.
Overthrowing dictators who are no threat to the US is stupid, and Sanders is right that Hillary was stupid on Iraq and Libya.

Sammy is right, but she already had that vote. Hate to say it but the black vote is already in the pocket.
She's shooting for turnout - that's why she wanted all of them to be able to watch. I guess she wasn't too worried that votes might turned.

Rofl you have not changed one iota. Still infantile and bitter. No wonder there are fewer visitors here. The quality of the visitors is also telling. I would have thought you could see that, but I am guessing not.

I am dealing with much drama right now. I can't cope with all my grindr requests. They want to blow me now, are near my loft, and are desperate for me to fuck their ass.
My number one priority, going forward, is to prioritize this shit.
Carleton, the doorman, told me 5 men stopped by today looking for me.
I am riding the elevator with fab neighbors, and my grindr rough trade
minority trick, and I can tell my fellow penthouse neighbor, with their rare dog, are not amused.
Tonight I had to deal with the Harvard jew retired profs ride up to the penthouse with me, their english cocker puppy, and my trick from El Selvador, who is a bartender in the Seaport. Talk about humiliating.
Yes, it is flattering, but unacceptable.
It is really getting out of hand.

Bernie Say's he admirers Churchill. WTF? He may be more Jewish than I thought.
Yes, in spite of a lot of things. But he's a very diaspora Jew.
Hillary, by the way, took two or three opportunities to say - or maybe hint, as she avoided saying "Israel" - that Bernie's foreign policy would be adanger to Israel, even pronouncing the word "Golan" (as in "the Golan") in the Israeli way. She said Bernie would put Iranian troops on the Golan. Not exactly I think what he proposed to have happen. (even if perhaps that's what it would mean. Bernie spent time arguing that it should be a goal to imporve relations with, if it meant anythig at all Iran.)
On Libya Hillary made something of a vote on Libya - which Bernie explained was just about unanimous. He said was to get the United Nations Security Council involved.
Interesting thing: Bernie said, in passing, we could overthrow Assad - except that maybe it might not be agood idea because of what could happen later. Hillary didn't touch that. You notice Bernie is wuite confident of the power of the United States. (Military budget cuts don't affect that.)
Bernie had also been asked where he would cut. He was not specific, but said peole in the sanet know. Hillary said some job training and education programs - they could maybe be combined. Later Bernie remembered he Pentagon as a place to cut.
* people in the Senate know there are places to cut, that there's waste etc.
Bernie says black teen unemployment is 50%
You know why? Because of the minimum wage. And I'm talking about extending it to other jobs back in 1951.
Bernie said a factory job isn't so good, but you used to be able to support a family on it. (this is a cliche actually, if you don't already know that)
He seemed to think the reason this no longer is true is that the factory jobs moved to China. But wouldn't things be more expensive otherwise? And what about improvements in manufacturing technology so that fewer workers are needed? Should that be reversed too? He actually doesn't have a complete, or even half complete, economic theory. He has nothing, except half a dozen 80 to 150 year old ideas. And the whole thing depends on very very static analysis. Well almost. His health care plan does assume people will save money, and spend money on other things and theerfore pay more payroll taxes.

He didn't think anything was wrong until the veterans; organizations urned against the VA (they were out of touch with things too, you know)
But the bill he eventually pushed for is inadeqate and protects the careers of everybody in the VA.
Hillary said (at the end bit she said it) that the water in Flint had been "poisoned" which is not true. Bernie brought up Flint a few times (and not in aracial context - he doesn't like that too much) and added it to the supposed crumbling infrastructure problem (but that wasn't the problem either in Flint.
Government made a very stupid mistake out of ignorance, that's what happened. And they wouldn't listen.
I suspect "bald face" is a sexist slander. Laslo will know for sure.
Sorry, I see at Jaltcoh - I hadn't really understood it when I heard it - that Governor Walker's consent was needed for Sanders's education plan. That one I think is true, although I am not solid on that. But Sanders could argue competition betwene states would force Wisconsin to match he effort, or there could be pressure brought or the plan could be odified.
Isn't every American President some kind of first. Romney would have been our first Mormon President. Eisenhower was our first German-American President. Rubio or Cruz would be our first Hispanic Prez. Trump our first double divorced Prez. Why are Dem firsts firstier than Republican firsts?
Bret Baier just roughed up Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. Is it possible she doesn't know who Henry Kissinger is?
With all most anyone else, I would say no...but this is DWS we're talking about here.....
Government made a very stupid mistake out of ignorance, that's what happened. (Flint) And they wouldn't listen.
Exactly. One of my former students actually tried to blame Flint on White racist men, and when I pointed out that it was actually the government that was responsible, and that she wanted to increase the size and power of government by voting for Bernie, she flipped out.
The first Bernie Sanders. Historic.
Cruz would mop the floor with either of them, in an argument.
I'm not sure that would be the most politically effective thing to do though. Trump would know I suppose.
Trump vs Bernie should be a very interesting debate.
"Crumbling infrastructure"
Every time that is brought up, I think of the responsibilities the founders wisely left to the states, and the states left to municipalities. Then I think of the 305 billion $ highway bill for this year -- for federal highways and God knows what else. Than I think of the billions and billions wasted on stupid shit the federal government has no business doing in the first place. The federal government has no business running local schools, or police departments. Why is the federal government supposed to better at running the Ferguson MO police department than the taxpayers of Ferguson? Are the feds just dog-gone better people?
Government money is not spent to do important things. Government money is spent to achieve political goals. That's why they whine about too little infrastructure spending while they spend millions and billions to satisfy small groups of people who leverage their influence with the government.
At least in a city or county or state, your vote means something or you can leave. The federal government was never designed to be especially representative of the will of the voters, and it has gotten less responsive -- not more -- since the founding of the country.

According to DWS if it predates "Saturday Night Fever" it didn't happen.
Bernie would be the first septuagenarian president.
One thing about Sanders is that I don't think he will spend the kinds of time demonizing his opponents that Obama does. I don't think he thinks of his fellow Americans as enemies the way Clinton and Obama do.
I doubt the debate will garner high ratings
Right off the bat Char Char tweaks Alhouse by using "garner" when he could have simply said "get." I like it.
Bernie is doing so well because no one likes Hillary. I think the Clintons soured a lot of Democratic insiders during their time in the White House. That's one reason Obama won. Remember how the Kennedy clan came out and endorsed him as the next JFK? Bernie doesn't have Obama's youth and good looks nor his racial advantage, but the Democrats seem to be wanting anyone but Hillary. Too bad no one else in the party had the courage of Sanders.
Too bad no one else in the party had the courage of Sanders
Sanders is playing with the house's money. The rest of the Democrats who might have run quake in fear of the Boss Tweeds who control the billionaire's money and claim to decide who gets to run.
Facebook doesn't fail to let me know about Democrat debates in its little stuff it promotes that doesn't come from my "friends" but it seems to studiously ignore Republican debates...
But watch out for that Koch Bros money!
I think the Koch's should change their last name to "Goldstein" just so they can rub it in when they are denounced by the useless wretches that make up the intellectual and political leadership of the Left.

Bernie would be the first septuagenarian president.
But Hillary! and Trump would are close behind and would also become septuagenarian while in office.
And Bernie is a social fabulist, not a communist.
Communists are killers, and Bernie is not that.
Bernie would be the second president from Vermont.
Bernie's not from Vermont, which makes him an authentic Vermont liberal.
Trump has summed Bernie up by saying Bernie is right about the problems, but that Bernie has Absolutely No Solutions.
@traditionalguy, of course Bernie has a solution. It is the standard Democrat solution since FDR: throw money at the problems in the form of many more government programs. And if it doesn't work, or it made the problem worse, then that's because you didn't throw enough money at them. Throw more.
Bill tried to cheer up Hillary this morning by reminding her that Nelson Mandela wasn't elected President until he had served 29 years in prison.
So, don't drop names.
There was some national politician back in the 90s -- can't remember who, might have been Bill Clinton -- who said that the people who were against deficits were unpatriotic because they believed Americans weren't hard working enough to pay for the government they wanted.

Obama was the first president born outside the continental United States (the lower 48) And if McCain had been elected, he would have been so, too!
Obama I think wss the first president who had a parent who was born outside the United States - not only that, but he wasn't even a citizen later. Everyone else goes back at least two or three generations. No wait, maybe Andrew Jackson also had parens born outside what was to become the United States.
Herbert Hoover was the first president born west of the Mississippi. But since then, I think they've been the majority!
Franklin Delano Roosevelt - East of the Mississippi.
Harry S Truman - West of the Mississippi.
Dwight D. Eisenhower - West of the Mississippi. (although elected from New York and retired to Pennsylvania)
John F. Kennedy - East of the Mississippi.
Lyndon B. Johnson - West of the Mississippi.
Richard M. Nixon - West of the Mississippi (although living in New York when elected. Retired to California at first, but later New York and New Jersey.)
Gerald M Ford - West of the Mississippi. (Born in South Dakota, although he grew up and has hhis political career in Michigan, which is east of the Mississippi.)
Jimmy Carter - East of the Mississippi.
Ronald Reagan - East of the Mississippi. (born in Illinois. He moved to California in his movie career)
George Bush the elder - East of the Mississippi. He moved to Texas to make his fortune. He was an early Republican in Texas becase he wasn't from Texas.
Bill Clinton - West of the Mississippi. (Arkansas is)
George W. Bush - West of the Mississippi.
Barack Obama - West of the Mississippi.
West beats East 8 to 5. Although some of the ones on the west are more associated with the east (Ford, and to some degree, Eisenhower and even Nixon) and some of the ones born on the east are nore associated with the west (Reagan, Bush I)
