Sorry, I can't put up with the debate... even though it's happening in Wisconsin.

It seems so repetitious! The American economy is rigged... top 1%... free tuition....

But I see my son John is carrying on the old live-blogging tradition, so I highly recommend that.

AND: That was a bald-faced lie when she said she wasn't asking us to vote for her because she's a woman. I was walking away from the TV and the computer, but I had to come back to take note of that. Now that I'm here, I'll add that I liked what Bernie Sanders said when he was asked how he felt about standing in the way of a first woman President. He said that if he won, considering who he is, it would also be historic. He didn't specify why. He didn't say "first Jewish President" or "socialist!" It's up to us to fill in why.

Free tuition, eh? At least they'll get what they pay for.

It's amazing. So far, Hillary and Bernie have created 100 million high paying jobs. If not for the illegal immigrants, they could have settled for 85 million. Anyway, everyone goes to college, for free or for very little money. No one works in plumbing, auto repair, HVAC, electricity, welding, etc. Why should they? No indoctrination in those $100K/year training programs I assume.

Quaestor said...

Garner high ratings? If if that's what they want... They want to accumulate press attention, gather blog comments, collect feedback from PoliSci majors, amass donations, assemble troops of door-knocking volunteers, and reap endorsements.

They might even get some votes.

Bernie says black teen unemployment is 50% and the 45 t0 60 age range middle class whites have a lowered life expectancy from suicide, drugs and depression because of losing half their income levels by taking part time jobs now that China has been given most of our factory jobs.

Then Bernie says we have to accept and legalize every single poor peasant person from Central America and Mexico that crosses over our old, now non-enforced, border...because they need it so we have no other choice.

Trump has summed Bernie up by saying Bernie is right about the problems, but that Bernie has Absolutely No Solutions.

"the middle class who is getting screwed"

Depends on how you look at it. Pew 2015: middle class pre-tax income up 34% since 1970. Middle class size stagnant, because growth of upper-income category (over double median) has been faster (so portion of actual "middle class" measured by quintiles (i.e., using basic distribution) rather than specific income standards (Pew method) has much higher income than it used to). Middle quintile net federal taxes are negative.

I notice that Drudge's headline is DEMS DEBATE AS 'RACE' HEATS with race in scare quotes.

Hillary started this quixotic thing, whatever it is it isn't a political campaign, years ago with the idea planted firmly in her peabrain that the votes of America's women were hers by divine right or something. Then when that delusion began to falter she herded some surrogate man-hating cows on to the stage to damn and insult any female with a mind she dares call her own. Now she's trying to the next demographic she believes is hers to command. Playin' the race card against a Jew.

In the debate somebody said that Wisconsin had twice he proportion of black males in prison as that of any other state. It feels like a phony statistic. What's goping on there? The only thing I could think of is that Wisconsin jails Chicago criminals that Illinois ignores - maybe the denominator is wrong.

The whole thing is anyway distorted statistics. Till at least a year or two ago, the proportion of blacks in prison was going down, not up. It was going down once crime had dropped. And the unspoken assumption seems to be that blacks should have the same ratio of criminal law violators as whites. In fact the claim was even being made that the law is tougher on blacks, which is demonstrably not true.

There is a real, active, pro street crime lobby in this country, and this could be very dangerous.

If you accept the theory that government is a scam to enrich a few insiders, then I agree. She has been a crook since Arkansas.

In the mean time, Peggy Noonan gets it, amazingly !

have thought for some time that there’s a kind of soft French Revolution going on in America, with the angry and blocked beginning to push hard against an oblivious elite. It is not only political. Yes, it is about the Democratic National Committee, that house of hacks, and about a Republican establishment owned by the donor class. But establishment journalism, which for eight months has been simultaneously at Donald Trump’s feet (“Of course you can call us on your cell from the bathtub for your Sunday show interview!”) and at his throat (“Trump supporters, many of whom are nativists and nationalists . . .”) is being rebelled against too. Their old standing as guides and gatekeepers? Gone, and not only because of multiplying platforms. Gloria Steinem thought she owned feminism, thought she was feminism. She doesn’t and isn’t. The Clintons thought they owned the party—they don’t. Hedge-funders thought they owned the GOP. Too bad they forgot to buy the base!

I don't know if Ritmo is around tonight but this is the kind of revolution I was talking about last summer.

By the way, I have been buying gold since spiring.

Hillary seems to be in better command of facts, which she occasionally showed, when it seemed safe or when she didn't realize others didn't know. She actually knew the details of the Syria ceasefire plan.

Hillary and Bernie had an argument about Henry Kissinger. His history isn't really quite correct. Kissinger did not overthrow Prince Sihanouk in 1970. That happeed in Cambodia by itself. And something more than the fact there was a Lon Nol government led to the Khmer Rouge. There were wrong turns in U.s. foreign policy after that too - Jimmy Carter preventing Thailand from invading Cammbodia in 1977, and then siding with China after Vietnam overthre Pol Pot and claiming it was wrong and supporting a seat in the United Nations for Pol Pot and his allied for ten years.

Bernie also claimed that Kissinger was a strong proponent of the domino theory. That was others. In the Johnson Administration. (Actally what Kissinger was a proponent of, was honoring committments with the thought more toward Europe than Asia)

And Bernie added that - the domino theory being because you didn't want China to get stronger - that then he turns around and makes a reapproachment with China and jobs go over there. (that happened at least ten years later) No, he said, he won't take advice from Henry Kissinger.

Hillary did not dispute anything, just saying she can take adboice on specific subjects. She had cited him as being an expert on China. I think actually he's just being used an excuse for her China policy.

The debate was also broadcast on PBS (and that meant NPR too, but I don't think anyone was calculating that)

I noticed that all the Democratic Party debates seem to be aavilable on broadcast, not cable, channels. They do not require cable. Although they do require good reception, something Hillary probably doesn't realize is a problem since 2009.

It was said the Democrats tried to hide the debates, yet they have get every one of them on free TV. And this must be Hillary's doing. The DNC - Debbie Wasserman Schultz - is on her side.

I was trying to figure out why. Doesn't Hullary think debates hurt her? So why get abigger audience? Well, one thing I see here, is that this is obviously to get more poor people to watch it.

I think she thinks this tilts the audience toward people more likely to vote for her, and what she wants is increaed turnout. That must be the calculation.

Another way Hillary showed knowledge was that Berne was asked this quesiton by how much he would expland the federal government. He didn't gove an answer. I think this is actually more because he doesn't know the figire rsather than because he doesn't want to reveal the number. Hillary said she had heard a 40% increase. She tried to make it sound as big as possible. Bernie had started to talk about health insurance and the discussion veered off mostly into that.

Also free tuition. Bernie Sanders said what a high school educations used to be was now 4 years of college, and I don't think he meant it in a critical way (reduction of standards)

Hillary, by the way, took two or three opportunities to say - or maybe hint, as she avoided saying "Israel" - that Bernie's foreign policy would be adanger to Israel, even pronouncing the word "Golan" (as in "the Golan") in the Israeli way. She said Bernie would put Iranian troops on the Golan. Not exactly I think what he proposed to have happen. (even if perhaps that's what it would mean. You know why? Because of the minimum wage. And I'm talking about extending it to other jobs back in 1951.

Bernie said a factory job isn't so good, but you used to be able to support a family on it. (this is a cliche actually, if you don't already know that)

He seemed to think the reason this no longer is true is that the factory jobs moved to China. But wouldn't things be more expensive otherwise? And what about improvements in manufacturing technology so that fewer workers are needed? Should that be reversed too? He actually doesn't have a complete, or even half complete, economic theory. He has nothing, except half a dozen 80 to 150 year old ideas. And the whole thing depends on very very static analysis. Well almost. "Crumbling infrastructure"
Every time that is brought up, I think of the responsibilities the founders wisely left to the states, and the states left to municipalities. Then I think of the 305 billion $ highway bill for this year -- for federal highways and God knows what else. Than I think of the billions and billions wasted on stupid shit the federal government has no business doing in the first place. The federal government has no business running local schools, or police departments. Why is the federal government supposed to better at running the Ferguson MO police department than the taxpayers of Ferguson? Are the feds just dog-gone better people?
Government money is not spent to do important things. Government money is spent to achieve political goals. That's why they whine about too little infrastructure spending while they spend millions and billions to satisfy small groups of people who leverage their influence with the government.
At least in a city or county or state, your vote means something or you can leave. The federal government was never designed to be especially representative of the will of the voters, and it has gotten less responsive -- not more -- since the founding of the country.
