"Students form a perimeter around the #ConcernedStudent1950 tent village and ask media to leave."

"This is what civic-level censorship looks like at a university with the largest and oldest public college for journalism."

ADDED: The protesting students are making many rudimentary PR mistakes here and could use some training in basic protest technique. They end up looking repressive and brutish, right in front of a camera, and they keep cranking up the intimidation. The photographer knows he's getting video that he'll be able to put up on the internet, and he's using a very effective technique of remaining calm and standing his ground in the face of what looks like scary intimidation. I have walked with a camera into big, passionate protests here in Wisconsin, and — with a few exceptions — the protesters were much better prepared to resist making the photographer seem like a sympathetic victim.

As for the First Amendment: The students and the photographers have free speech rights against the government, but not against each other. At 1:43, the photographer calmly cites the First Amendment, which, he says, gives all of them all "right to be here," in the public space, which is true. One of the black female protesters says "We do have our space as human beings," to which the photographer responds, emphasizing each word: "There's not a law about that." The woman then makes what I think is the most interesting statement in the video: "Forget a law. How about humanity? Respect?" He says, "How about documenting this for posterity?"

That's right where a good conversation could have begun. The law is not the beginning and end of how people treat each other. There is etiquette and there is respect. There is even love. As human beings, we want all of that. Please respect our space is an understandable request that a person should evaluate in ways that go beyond legal rights. The photographer did engage on that level when he offered a counter-value, documentation for posterity.

Unfortunately, that one-to-one conversation ended when another woman barged in and started yelling, precluding the development of the issues about photographing people who don't want to be photographed, and the crowd —which probably didn't notice the touching moment when Respect and Documentation stood face to face —  got going with the old "Hey hey ho ho" chant format: "Hey hey ho ho/Reporters have got to go."

The irony (learned from instapundit) is that the student journalist Tim Tai, won an award for covering the Michael Brown case.

—Headline, University of Missouri School of Journalism Website, June 24, 2015. As the Website notes, Tai received a $1,500 scholarship for placement as one of the six finalists, and additional $1, 000 for “Best Single Photograph” in the competition, with a photo the site captioned, “Lesley McSpadden, the mother of Michael Brown, sheds a tear during a vigil for her son on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri. The vigil later turned into a march protesting Brown’s death. Photo: Timothy Tai.”

Tim may be the only Journalist left in the Journalism school.

Academia went south during the sixties when the students first took over the campuses of America. The professors on those campuses promptly and self-righteously sided with the students. Those students and those that came later are now the current professors of our colleges. Since those years our students have been propagandized by the MSM, academia and the American intellectual class to believe the USA is a bad nation, rife with racism and misogyny under every stone. This “protest” is the logical result of decades of wallowing in America-hatred.

I’m sure many of the football players have professional aspirations. If I were a pro scout of the future I would think twice before drafting any of these particular college football players. Let them earn a living using their college degrees, if they ever get one.

They try but the other students still ignore them because their "best" is effectively meaningless. They end up screaming at the dorm's Master and blocking cars at the homecoming parade because they're infuriated their efforts are so worthless.

The impacts from these events are long term. More racial hiring means more taxes and more tuition. It means the activist leaders are likely to land themselves government or NGO jobs after they graduate. But it has effectively no impact on the day to day lives of anyone who doesn't choose to become involved.

Lol. There's nothing "interesting" about that woman's statement. It's an utter non sequitur. There is nothing in the reporter's behavior that is disrespectful or lacking in "humanity", so what does she mean? I think her meaning is obvious to anyone not driven by a need to turn this into something it manifestly is not.

The implication that the maker of the "interesting" statement was ready, willing, and able to put forth coherent and thoughtful views on civility and civic life, if only the reporter understood that the law is not the beginning and end of how we treat each other, is laughable.

What does it mean when someone who is not being treated disrespectfully tries to make everything all about their feelings of being disrespected? Unless one is very sheltered, it's a behavior whose "real meanings" most of us figure out pretty early on.

Good. I went to college thinking I was a liberal and these programs showed me what "liberalism" really is. Show more students the crazy right off the bat and open their eyes. Academia's success in indoctrination is based on subtlety, as when professors teach from a perspective that assumes liberal values are better. But when they teach their perspective openly they cannot help but reveal their radicalism which naturally most students reject. Making liberalism more explicit is a positive outcome.

and the curriculum will be altered to conform to the activists demands.

Professor / activists can only control the curriculum where they teach the classes. Yes the humanities are ruined for students. But should any worthwhile department subject its students to the same their graduates become unemployable thus ruining their department. The faculty of those departments have too much invested to allow this, and for the most part these faculty are not activist warriors as the humanities faculty are.

the day to day life of students will have to conform to whatever the activists deem acceptable.

Activists don't have the power to do this. They cannot mandate you attend their protest, they can't make you read their stupid op eds. Institutions can be controlled, students cannot. And so our effort should be in opposing and weakening those institutions.

Tell that to the kids in that fraternity at the UofV that were accused of sponsoring gang rapes. They had to leave their Frat House, which was vandalized. In addition, the students will learn pretty quickly that certain things simply cannot be said.

And, as mentioned up thread, grievance courses are now part of the core requirements while you can graduate from some colleges with an English major without ever having to take a single course on Shakespeare.

MayBee said...

If you read the student's (and some sympathetic press and admin) twitter feeds, you easily see what the problem is.

They need a safe space because they don't trust the media. It has been used as an instrument of repression. So they can't trust their story to the media and therefore want to shut it out.
They assume those who had power before them wielded their power for the sake of power, and that's why they censored the press. They don't understand that those people, too, didn't trust the media. They, too, feared they would lose what they had if other people could critique them openly.

These students think they are different because their motives are different and their goals are desirable. But that's exactly what the powerful before them thought.
This is why talking about "white privilege" doesn't explain anything, and doesn't broaden the current activists understanding of what came before them. So they are doing the very thing they think they are fighting against.

There is a reason this is so confusing and difficult to understand.

If you watch the nightly news shows, read papers like the New York Times, or read magazines like Time, you know that the Republican party is at war with its radical, tea party, right. That it's the establishment vs the conservatives. That the Republicans are in disarray and that is represented by the "clown car" primary currently taking place.

But the Democrats? They are united. It's Hillary. That's it. Period. There are only mainstream Democrats.

That's if you only read and watch the state approved media.

But really, there is also a war for the Democrat party. The left is taking it over. Communists and socialists want the power. And while Democrats are clearly moving left, they aren't moving left fast enough.

And that's what this is. Black Lives Matter and student groups and occupy Wall street, etc. They all have a taste of the power and leftist domination that they so desperately desire. But its not happening swiftly enough for them. Fox News still exists. Republicans still have a party.

This can't be allowed to stand. Christian fast food chicken must be destroyed.

Shouting Thomas. Next time you want to see what these Missouri or Yale students are doing, you might try looking in the mirror instead of wasting time searching for video clips of them on the internet.

As to Ann, I have to hand to her for finding the one sign of something positive in this insane confrontation. I do think these students are not as dumb about their impact via the media as compared with the Madison protests against Walker. By trying to keep the media out, they already give evidence of knowing how badly the public is likely to react to their rage and mob rule behavior. I say they are fine with it. What they want is to project POWER, not an appeal to the power of others, public opinion, as say you might do in a normal democracy. They are not out to win any argument, in any even remotely rational sense of that word. They think they are warding off danger, not differences of views. Like a cat whose tail bushes out when facing off with another cat. The aim is not to win the other cat over. These are people who feel so deeply aggrieved and wounded that the only alternatives are flight or fight.

President Wolfe can return to the real and more sane world.

"He never stood a chance in the deranged environment of the politically correct modern university. Unlike so many college presidents, Wolfe made his bones in the real world.

According to his Wikipedia page, Wolfe began his career as a sales rep for IBM in 1980. He worked his way up the industry ladder, becoming president of Novell Americas in 2007. It’s unlikely that anyone demanded coddling from Wolfe during his corporate career.

Wolfe was named president of the University of Missouri in 2011. I imagine that he saw his mission more as maintaining the financial viability of the institution than as promoting

“the mental health of [the] campus,” which he probably assumed was okay. Little did he know."

Yet not one of them asks why they are acting the way they are acting. Not one of them questions why they are all pushing the media. None of them says, "We are wrong here".

Well, I defended Ann's first way of putting this, but can't accept this idea that these student flubbed up because they were not "better trained as protesters." I really think this assumes they actually have some practical goal, some realizable objective conceived as addressing the evil they claim to be angry about. I do not see that. I do not recall ever having been "trained" as a protester when we went into the streets chanting "Hey, hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?" or "Hey, Hey, we ain't faking, today's pig is tomorrow's bacon." Such calls still echo up and down State St and University Ave for me when I visit Madison. We might have been in your face and we certainly provoked as much outrage from the public by our behavior as the Missouri students do. But unlike them, we did have an actual ACHIEVABLE end in view - to detach the university from its complicity in the war. From institutionally sanctioned university policies that the university was perfectly able to alter. I do not think our in-your-face behavior in our protests was based on a wiser or better trained notion of protest. It was how we felt. I also know for a fact we did not care how our behavior was portrayed in the media. We wanted to achieve certain achievable goals. These protests now over "offenses" given by almost anyone anywhere are attached to university administrators NOT because those administrators are either responsible for them or can do a thing about them. They are power plays, meant to intimidate not enlighten or win sympathy. These protesters are not trying to win any support to achieve anything real. They are suffering a delusion of dishonor and insult so deep as to be a violent crime itself. In response they are protecting themselves by acting in as angry and frightening a way as they possibly can. And in that, they have at least on this Missouri campus succeeded mightily.

The two sentences above are a complete contradiction of each other. It's a desperate defense. True selves are what we are when no one else is looking. The students and professor got caught on camera before they could adjust. Since when does outward behavior not expose the true self? Stupid is as stupid does.

I'll bet Dr. Melissa Click wishes she'd behaved differently, but she was exposed, and cashed her 15-minutes of fame in on hypocrisy and hysteria. She forgot to hide her true self.

On the one hand Professor Althouse offers defense by saying the students would have looked better if they were trained at protesting, or better at acting, or pros at propaganda. Even though the training would be meant to hide their innate mob behavior, the professor denies that the untrained are exposing who they really are.

They just want a wittle wuv...

I don't think they would have chosen anything differently. Sure they look like idiots to most people, but the protests Althouse apparently believes a "better" trained protester would have chosen are ineffective. So these students traded their own self respect to create an event faculty and administration activists can use to achieve their goals. This is why a willingness to say stupid things in public is such a key element in activist politics. This is why activists train their cannon fodder this way in the first place, theater of victimization works.

Gandhi did it without swinging a club. These little special snowflakes don't deserve to be where they are. They have demonstrated that by their actions. The only bright spot in all of this is that it could not happen to a nice group of people (academics). I'll just point out that I don't remember you voicing such assumptions--giving such a generous-to-the-point-of-ridiculous benefit of the doubt--about any non-Leftist protesters, Prof. The Tea Party is all about love, right, they want those same things, no? Hey, so did the people protesting outside the US Capitol a few years ago, you know, the ones the Democrats accused of spitting and shouting racial epithets? Those people just wanted love, but for some weird reason I don't remember you nor anyone else not on the Right mentioning that fact.

If you boil it down what these activists are calling for is not much short of a revolution--a revolution in the culture we as Americans take for granted. We assume freedom of speech means a marketplace for ideas wherein we have to listen to and (gasp!) tolerate all sorts of ideas and expressions we dislike. Traditionally we don't interpret "contrary points of view" as "traumatic" nor as violence, but these activists insist that we do just that, or else. This isn't exactly a new idea, but it is new to America and where it was successful in other nations in the past you can be sure authoritarianism (with attendant violence, deaths, etc) quickly followed.
As I said, they're agitating for a revolution in the culture...a Cultural Revolution, to coin a phrase.

HoodlumDoodlum said...

The majority of Maoists probably wanted love, peace, and respect, too. The majority of southerners in America in 1861 probably just wanted peace and for their government to respect what they saw as their rights. The majority of Russians in 1917 just wanted peace (a literal end to war) and safety--what would become the Stalinsts were literally a minority party within the minority of political activists.

So what? What bearing does what's in the hearts of the majority have on judging the outwardly-thuggish actions of the minority actually taking action? The position that "gee, if only they were better trained they wouldn't look so bad" might be true, but it doesn't say whether they actually ARE bad or not, and just ASSUMING that they're not doesn't make any sense. You should just say "I'm predisposed to think these are good people and extend to them a benefit of the doubt (w/r/t their behavior) I wouldn't extend to other groups" and leave it at that.

HoodlumDoodlum said...

Hey is this on University property, or what? I mean, sure, everyone has a right to use the common spaces, and everyone is equal, but some people are more equal than others, clearly. Damn, that oughtta be in a book somewhere, what an idea.
