New CNN poll has Fiorina in second place with 15%. Trump is first, but down 8 points from last time, at 24%..

The headline is: "Poll: Fiorina rockets to No. 2 behind Trump in GOP field."

But she only gained 3 points, while he fell 8. I don't know. Do the math and translate it into metaphor. 8 is 25% of 32 (8 points more than 24), so Trump lost a quarter of his previous support. 3 is 25% percent of 12 (3 points less than 15), so she gained 25%. Why is she considered the "rocket"? Because — as the first sentence puts it — she's "rocketed into second place"? It's not the encroachment on Trump but her getting in front of everyone else?

Oh! I see I misread that. She's up from 3%....

So, fine, rockets red glaring.

Fiorina gets an enormous amount of favorable press. Fox has been pushing her since before the first GOP debate. It's true that Trump has also receives a gobsmacking amount of free press, but how much of it was really favorable?

A lot of Trump's appeal is that he is pissing off all the right people. So negative mainstream press can help, at least with Republican primary voters.

Plus, as they say, as long as they spell his name right.

I'm interested in the Althouse reaction to Rush on Friday, about Fiorina being the agreed Trump destroyer between both establishment Dems and Republicans. Hence the media hype.

Greta van Susteren practically fellates him on-screen every other day.

True that. Trump has the most marvelous set of enemies and detractors that any politician could ever wish for!

Most telling is that the cumulative preference for those who never held an important government office/position nor had significant military experience is over 50%. Can't think of a previous president without either of the above.

Great.. the establishment need not puff up Ben Carson's number any more. Fiorina is the foil to Trump and then they will release all the skeletons from her closet and she goes down like a led balloon. Low energy Jeb! will be standing by to take her place.

I haven't listened to that show. I only listen to the show occasionally these days. But I'll look at the transcript.

I have respect for Rush, but I totally disagree that Fiorina is some "agreed destroyer" of Trump. It sounds conspiratorial.

Trump picked a fight with Carly (mocked her looks) and Carly hit back - nothing more, nothing less.

Trump is a brilliant marketer, doesn't play by the ordinary political rules, and has a billion bucks to spend. Nobody can "destroy" him. He mouth offs a bit much, and tends to attack people, not ideas. Trump has mastered the air wars (tv), but I think the ground game (field organization, volunteer, meet & greet) is equally important in the primaries, so we'll just have to see how well is GOTV operations are in Iowa & New Hampshire. He has done amazingly well so far, but voters are fickle.

"she goes down like a led balloon"

Sure, they're trying to set her up, but it's less of a problem if she's VP candidate. Still the more likely scenario.

She's rising because of the appeal of her policy positions and runing a polished campaign.

Fiorina is the best female Presidential candidate we've had from either party.

Telling that Jeb did that embarrassing low five with the Donald when Trump deigned to toss him some faint praise. Telling that Jeb thought to put the non-American Margaret Thatcher on the ten dollar bill. Bush is the beta who can at lease sense where the power on the debate stage lies. Fiorina put Thatcher into Jeb's receptive mind as she stuck the hat pins in the inflated Trump. It was not just the "women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said" stinger. It was Fiorina's command of issue after issue that Mr. Trump sadly lacks.

Conspiratorial doesn't take much. Remember Journolist, the sudden agreement on specific phrases showing up in a dozen newscasts, and so forth. I tend to think they picked Fiorina because women are so easy to scam.

Fiorina lost me permanently with her reply to Trump, that women all over America heard what he said.

Women, on the contrary, are the world's best source of ridiculousness, compounded by men's desire to get along. A quandary. The war of the sexes.

Some awareness of this is called for on Fiorina's part.

Feminism ought to encourage women to raise their game, not fall into soap opera.

I don't think Trump is marketing so much as throwing sand into PC. It works as marketing, but it's also a policy position that's much needed.

Without the bloviating, narcissistic, misogynist Trump, Fiorina would be stuck in the low single digits, the contrast between them works to her advantage.

clint said...

Meh. Fiorina says things that get viewers tuning in. That's what they care about right now.

If they could just get Chris Christie to hit Trump with a folding chair while the bouncers charge in to separate them, they'd be on cloud nine.

It's all part of the GOP process of coming around to Jeb.

Yeah. Trump should make jokes about Fiorina's hair.

Someone, I think it was the CEO of United Fruit, once said that in business, if you can be right 51% of the time, you are executive material; I you are right 60% of the time, you are wasting your time in business - run for President!

Bay Area Guy said...

@Phil3:14

It is all Rhorschaching. No matter what happens with the debates, polling numbers, sound-bites, the political betting markets still predict Clinton v Jeb! - the inevitable dynastic clash.

Learn to love Jeb!, I reckon.

About her policy positions:

I see that there are comments about Fiorina being the agreed upon Trump destroyer. I didn't listen to Rush or anybody else when I made my comment. I came to that conclusion all on my own. I am really that smart.

So what if it's a set up? Are Trump supporters really saying there's a vast difference between the non-political experience of Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump? Why is he more qualified than she is to be President? She seems to piss off the same people that Trump does? Please explain to me why Fiorina is bad, but Trump is good?

For everybody who cannot fathom an MSM conspiracy, I would ask you why there were secret email lists between MSM members. Does nobody remember the Journo-List?

Just because you are paranoid does not mean they are not out to get you.

It plays well in the reality show obsessed world that we now live in. It feels so scripted it might as well be running every week on some cable channel.
