What if Joyce Carol Oates told a joke...

... and nobody got it ... even though you had to go to this obvious joke even to see what she was talking about....

Does anyone use twitter and NOT get in trouble? Why do people use it?

Decided long ago not to read anything by this writer.

Still, if this is a "joke," it is likely the first in her oeuvre.

I don't think was a joke on her part.

She may well have told a joke, we don't know. But wasn't the tricerotops tranqulized in the movie, rather than killed?

"Does anyone use twitter and NOT get in trouble? Why do people use it?"

Because Twitter is for twits.

The Library of Congress had to beg her to stop writing novels. They couldn't afford to put up a new wing. Something like 53% of all novels published in America were written by Joyce Carol Oates. And that doesn't include her essays and short stories. Now she's on twitter. The woman knows no boundaries.

I for one agree that inhumane treatment of rare breeds deserves condemnation. This is obviously a Globally Warmed Russian dog breeding disaster that was fed GMO.

Who does this Spieljerk, or whatever his name is, think he is? Even the NFL commissioner has no patience with now such shameful conduct and would suspend the weirdo for up to 4 gamee.

Hilarious. The left knows no boundaries. Even common sense.

What, no Pee-Wee "I meant to do that" clip?

Professor, you might think that it's obviously a joke because ... well, obviously. But it's an old, old picture, and it has made the rounds on Twitter and Facebook a couple of separate times in the last few years ... and EVERY time it catches all the lower-end animal rights/anti-gun/hippy dumbasses who can still somehow manage to operate a phone. EVERY time.

Funny every time.

Quaestor said...

OK, it's funny. But we must keep in mind that its humor derives from the fact that some people, quite a lot actually, would be fooled by the picture and would spout off in just those self-righteous terms.

The world of strange coincidences, it's positively Jungian. Just this evening Drudge linked to another Mark Dice video prank where California proglodytes queue up to sign a petition showing support for Obama's plan to "nuke Russia." Working the same beach strolled by the same solidly middle class beach strollers, well-equipped with iPhones and Twitter accounts, Dice got them to agree that the Bill of Rights should be repealed.

Our Russian friends should not take too much alarm at this result. The sad, sad fact is the aggregate IQ in this country is trending downward, and rather precipitously. The new normal is bound to be somewhere in the 80s -- and the Democrats own them lock, stock and barrel.

It's more convincing to claim that it's a joke if you post the picture and the joke yourself, rather than respond to someone else who makes the post and the joke. That person is trolling, and you look like you got trolled, even if you feel you were in on the joke.

There was a bit where Adam Carolla got some feminists with small vocabularies to sign a petition to "End women's suffrage!" Similar gag. And if you found a woman who signed and asked her about it, and then she said, "Oh, yeah, I totally got the joke, I meant it as a joke too!" you would understand she was just saving face. Even a famous author.

It's not a selfie. Idiot.

"I was joking" only works if JCO thinks the hatred at hunters is overblown.

I don't think that's true. Why would she think making fun of animal rightists was funny?

"Why would she think making fun of animal rightists was funny?"

I don't think she was making of of animal rights advocates. I think she was spoofing people on the internet who react with immediate outrage at everything they see, even before they've taken the time to understand what exactly it is they're seeing.

World War III will be caused by a mistyped acronym on a Serbian Twitter feed.

The "wherever" in the comment gives it away as satire of the armchair outrage that can be disseminated via Twitter. How can that be missed.

Why does she waste her time arguing with people not fit to carry her jock?

paminwi said...

JCO got caught being a stupid idiot. She was not joking. Sometimes smart people (like AA) just want to cut their supposed peers slack for looking stupid. Educators need to stick together!

These days it is too difficult to distinguish jokes from serious statements. We are beyond parody. It is most annoying.

It just doesn't read as a joke to me. Compare it to the Tilly tweet, which was obvious in its humor without explicitly stating it.

Amazon has never suggested Joyce Carol Oates to me.

So you are from the "read every comment on the web literally" camp, "Outrage Connoisseurs" division?

Whatever. I read it as a joke.

tim in vermont said...

Actually, you are not even reading it literally, you are assuming irony. But only a certain kind of irony that allows you to brand JCO as a thought criminal.

What a pathetic life.

On the one hand, it's actually pretty believable that Joyce Carol Oates never saw "Jurassic Park" and didn't recognize the animated rubber triceratops, but on the other it's pretty unbelievable that a person who has had some of her novels and short stories made into movies would fail to recognize Steven Spielberg. I used to think it would be impossible for a university professor not to know that triceratops have been extinct for scores of millions of years, but these days I'm not so sure.

Maybe she didn't have her glasses on and (a) didn't recognize Spielberg and (b) thought that the triceratops was an elephant? Dunno. Stranger things have happened.

But telling a joke? Her biblio isn't exactly replete with humorous novels. I rate that as a low probability.

tim in vermont said...

I tell jokes all the time that nobody gets.

Just today my wife finally laughed at a joke I told yesterday. True story, happened a couple of hours ago.

People should grow up.

I agree with Oleh. The sly reference to "wherever" suggests it was a joke. Wherever being Hollywoodland. It doesn't prove it, but points in that direction.
