Why is Hillary Clinton misstating checkable facts about her life?

Buzzfeed reports: "Speaking in Iowa Wednesday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that all her grandparents had immigrated to the United States, a story that conflicts with public census and other records related to her maternal and paternal grandparents."

Meanwhile, Chelsea Clinton expects people to believe that her very curly hair on its own changed into glossily sleek, slightly curved straight hair:
"My curls, in my early twenties, just fell into waves. I don't know if they got tired of me, but the curls slowly subsided, and so now it's naturally a little bit wavy but... I miss my curls."
Why lie about things you don't even need to lie about, things that can be checked? Why lie so badly?

Because they can. And get away with it. With the help of their lapdogs in the media. Obama gets away with it all the time. As did Warren wtih her fake Cherokee heritage. As Glenn likes to say, "It's who they are. It's what they do." And the low information voters just lap it up.

Lying is what they do. For the Clintons, and unfortunately the MSM, if they say it or report it, it must be true.

I'm sure Hillary has seen people pay very little price for these biographical fudges.

CStanley said...

Agree that the answer is "because she can" and yet I really think people are overreacting to this particular "lie."

If the truth (as I think I read) is that her grandfather was born abroad and her grandmother was born here shortly after her parents immigrated, then it is still true that her grandparents grew up in immigrant families and were immersed in that experience.

This really doesn't even come close to the whopper she told about Tuzla.

To be fair I'm sure we can judge this as somewhat true.
We are using the term "grandparent" in the strict sense of our parents parents. See, wasn't that easy?
It's an exaggeration, she's just starting off early getting us used to the idea. At some point in the campaign we will discover that almost every word that comes out of her mouth will be a half truth.
And we'll be fine with it, just you wait and see

I think it’s important to keep in mind how recent it’s been that people have been able to instantly fact-check statements by public figures and to bypass traditional gatekeepers in getting information out. Twenty years ago assuming someone took the time to request and gain access to the actual records, they might have posted it on an internet message board (or leaked it to Drudge). Today a lot more things are searchable online that didn’t use to be and you can tweet it, share it on Facebook, make a Youtube video showing a clip of her statements and contrast that with the actual records. And the traditional gatekeepers of print and broadcast journalism instead of ignoring these non-standard outlets in many cases are now highlighting them as they’ve cut back on their usual reporting desks.

So if you’re someone who was used to spending the first forty plus years of your life being able to say pretty much whatever you wanted with impunity, you now have to live in a world where the rules have changed. So either you double down and plod on hoping people will agree when you say “what does it matter” or you have to change your old habits and adapt to the new world.

Paminwi: fair enough- when I commented I had incorrectly assumed she had only referenced the one set of grandparents and felt that it was somewhat of a technicality if the grandmother was born shortly after the family arrived in the US instead of before.

I am certainly not interested in defending HC. I think this struck a chord for me though because my family ancestry includes most of the immigration happening at the level of my great grandparents and yet I think of my grandparents as immigrants since they were raised in families that had not yet assimilated- they all lived in Polish neighborhoods and spoke Polish. It just seems immaterial to me, whether a particular child was born prior to the voyage across the Atlantic or afterward, in terms of the experience that the child had growing up.

So I will grant that 25% accuracy is worse than the 50% that I'd wrongly assumed! but it still is a big "so what?" to me. And I think it's best to ignore things that really don't matter, since there will be many other lies she will tell which do matter. This trivializes it IMO.

The Clinton "outrage of the day" strategy is doing its job at the moment. People are pouncing on everything and getting riled up about it. However, people can only sustain outrage for so long and will tire of the subject by the time its to the time of actual campaigning. The thought is the Hillary Haters will tire themselves out.

Hate is human quality that is important to politics because it raises an emotion and rallies those you like you to your defense. Effective politicians can manage and redirect hate.

The risk to this strategy is that the general public will become indifferent to Mrs. Clinton and indifference is a death curse to politicians.

Chelsea may be telling the truth. Her hair doesn't look straightened, and some individuals do have hair that switches from straight to curly or vice versa in a lifetime.

I was born with dead straight hair. By the time I got to high school, I had a wave. By now (in my 50s), even cut short it is unmanageably curly. It's been a trial for decades now.

If I let it grow, it would look very similar to Chelsea's high school age photos. Sort of a white Afro look.

My mother, btw, warned me about this when I was thirteen, so it must have been a family pattern.

As to Hillary's immigrant background, she is a very narrative-oriented politician.

LAWTON, Okla. -- A command sergeant major at Fort Sill has been convicted of wearing unauthorized military insignia, including a Ranger Tab and the Pathfinder Badge.
Command Sgt. Maj. Perry McNeill was convicted last week by a military judge who sentenced McNeill to a demotion to sergeant first class, a letter of reprimand and to forfeit $500 in pay per month for 10 months.
The sentence must be approved by the fort's commanding general.
The Ranger Tab is awarded to those who complete Ranger School -- considered one of the Army's toughest training schools. The Pathfinder Badge goes to those who complete a school on managing helicopter landing zones, drop zones and other air-ground operations.
McNeill allegedly wore the badges between 2011 and 2014 while serving in Japan, Turkey and at Fort Sill."

Here is a man in a very high position brought low by his deliberate misrepresentations. Reminds me of ADM Boorda who as the CNO committed suicide for wearing valor insignia to which he was not entitled.

Of course Hillary! will pay no such price.

Arrogance? Confidence that the press will bury reports on the lies (along with snide dismissal of any who think the lies might say something significant about the candidate)?

The press treated Benghazi that way, essentially dismissing dissenters from this view as deranged crackpots. Why would a few mis-statements about her life be treated differently?

She's arrogant because she's always gotten away with flagrant, obvious lies, and why would she think anything was different now?

And she's old, and her political reflexes (to the extent she has any) would have been formed in the pre-Internet era.

Mrs Whatsit said...

Against my better judgment, and just this once, I'm going to stand up for Chelsea. She didn't say her hair went straight. She said it became wavy. It doesn't take much to straighten wavy hair -- I can almost straighten my own wavy hair just by blowing it dry with a brush. If I had the patience to fuss around with straighteners and hair products as I'm sure Chelsea does, I could probably make mine as glossy and straight as hers.

And it's not unheard of at all for hair to change its curliness. Mine was very wavy when I was a child and teenager. In my 20s, it relaxed into much looser waves. Later, during each pregnancy, it curled back up again, curlier and thicker than it ever was. Then it relaxed back into the barely-there waves and stayed like that until just recently. Now, the gray that's coming in is pretty curly and has to be beaten into submission to match the rest.

Two of my brothers and one of my sons had stick-straight silky shiny hair as little boys, that curled up tight at puberty and stayed curly ever after.

Hair changes. This one time, she might not be lying.

I remember the original Edmund Hillary flap, and as far as repeating the story of her being his namesake goes, I'm inclined to give her something of a pass. I'm willing to bet that shortly after he became famous people started noticing the similarity, and probably after the tenth time it came up in casual conversation her parents stopped protesting that they had selected the name (obviously since she was 6) long before his Everest climb and just started to politely agree. Being a young child Hillary probably didn't understand the polite fiction at work and absorbed it as the origin of her name.

I'm less inclined to give her a pass on this one, not so much because it isn't likely that a similar family oral history is at work but because it speaks to the fact that she and her team are unwilling to do the legwork to question her assumptions. They should realize that these sort of facts are checkable and when slipped them into prepared remarks they are the sort of factoid that people like to check on. They make a useful barometer on the veracity of other more difficult to check portions of the speech.

As much as I hate the Clintons, I have to agree with a couple other commenters about the hair. My wife had tight curls her whole life (I loved it). When she had our first son her hair straightened out. Kind of barely wavy now. I miss it.

Anything that happened before you were a conscious person you are relying on your family to tell you what happened. I might be wrong about some of the things I believe about the family.

Hillary has told a bunch of other lies, though, and checkable ones. Why does she do it? I would guess she feels trapped. That's when most people lie. I think Hillary has terrible anxiety and self-doubt, and she doesn't handle it well. It isn't surprising, because she is always comparing herself to someone more competent. And that more competent person treats her horribly, constantly humiliating her. And then she has a burden of guilt over the wrongs she has committed against the women he assaulted. I'm surprised she isn't crazier than she is.

And, as someone else noted, the fear of being caught lying doesn't work as a disincentive, because most of the media does try to help her. They may not like her, but they hate the republicans a lot more.

Meade, I'm curious why you say that LBJ was the evilest Prez. How you figure?

Both WJC and HRC want to create a mystique (cf. Kennedy/Camelot), which involves manipulating the information they put in front of the listener. Even "little" lies are important. In this case, the theme of being for the "little" people by being one of them. She can claim to have misspoken (even persuade folks questioning her statements to say she misstated the facts) and that somebody from her family was an immigrant, so it's all good, no need to worry about the details, maybe even try to cast fact checkers as pedants. On to the next little lie.

They can't stop. It's like being gay. It's out of their control. Someone says "Bush" and the lefty says "Bush lied people died." It's a reflex somehow.

It's an improvement on when they used to say, "If only Comrade Stalin knew about this !"

Why lie about things you don't even need to lie about, things that can be checked? Why lie so badly?

It's their identity to do so.

Bill taught his girls that they have to learn to believe their own lies to make them more credible.

But Hill's still too passionless for me to discern when she's even managed to at least convince herself of something.

It's common knowledge that LBJ had Kennedy killed. His mistress confirmed it years and years ago.

That's pretty evil...

But, but, Hillary flew back to New Joisey coach. Coach class! Does that not demonstrate that she's a woman of the people right there?

How dare people check up on her lies?!? It's merest puffery and none of their business. So there.

It is what pathological liars do. But you knew that, didn't you, Prof?

Clinton was, however, photographed pulling her own suitcase down an airport concourse.

So there! Just like you and I. A true woman of the people.

Well, thank God that no Photoshop was applied to her figure.

Hill figures that Pocahontas got more popular by using the "my family always said" meme - so Ms Rodham "remembers" all the discussions her grandparents had on the subject of immigrating.

Unlike Lizzy Warren, Hillary does not have high cheekbones, but she most certainly displays more cheekiness than our Indian princess.

My hair went from way to very curly in my 20s. I always wondered if it had to do with pregnancy, etc. My Mom's straight hair was curly for about 2 years after she had chemo, then it gradually straightened out again. So I will give Chelsea the benefit of the doubt on this one.

who was it that called her a congenital liar?

I think he was right. she can't stop herself. I think in journalism, she would be called a fabulist. If the presidency doesn't happen, maybe she can get a job writing for Rolling Stone.

Number of left-wing posters upset with Hillary's dishonesty: ZERO!

So why be honest, of honesty is not a trait valued among the left?

Indeed, lies are a leftist's stock in trade, as demonstrated by "President Bush can lie us into war..."

You're right about unfunded liabilities, but that won't play with low-information voters, and when the economy does tank (and, boy, will it...Goodbye post-war era and dollar dominance), it will somehow get blamed on the GOP.

But it's not a scandal scandal or an issue-yet-to-blow that will keep her off-message, especially since it's possible her lover is her aide, Abedin.

Here's what the Enquirer story says:

"Hillary is particularly concerned about intimate emails to longtime aide Huma Abedin – who married U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner in a ceremony that many ridiculed as a political arrangement. Anthony later resigned over extramarital sexting scandals, after porn star Sydney Leathers said that she believed he was in an open marriage.

“I think a lot of the time when we were speaking, Huma was probably with Hillary,” she charged, at the time.

One exchange between the women had Hillary mistakenly responding to political correspondence with an email that seemed to be about decorating.

Added the insider: “That makes you wonder if any sensitive information was sent to her romantic partners!”

And that's the issue, really, not sexuality, but can Clinton be trusted with official secrets.

"can Clinton be trusted with official secrets," she certainly can't be trusted to handle them according to the law.

I may have it wrong, but I think LBJ took social security into general revenue to support a new welfare state which he called "The Great Society." The impact of TGS was predicable, government dependency, and the impact of using social security money was also predictable, eventual insolvency. It as also a great illustration of why fed gov should be limited -- it can't be trusted when there's "extra" money laying around. Many States have a "rainy day" fund to cover harsh financial times, the fed gov increases taxes (and increases spending in lush financial times).

Where I grew up in West Virginia the descriptive phrase was "so and so would climb a tree to tell a lie rather than stand and on the ground and tell the truth."
I have always considered that the Clintons carry trees around for that very purpose. Take them to the Sahara and they would struck dumb.

These facts are checkable, but not instantaneously, and not everybody is ready to doubt them, and the only thing that matters to a Clinton is if they can fool most of the people, most of the time.

And they lie about public policy matters, too!

Thinking about the shadow journalism today (ie. the internet), I wonder if Bill C could have been elected now.

And they still don't know the truth about Bill Clinton. I mean most people actually think he grew up in Hope, Arkansas, not mob-dominated Hot Springs, Arkansas, where the political machine was run by "retired" gangster, and according to Jimmy Breslin, the Founder of organized crime in America, Owen Vincent "Owney the Killer" Madden (1892-1965)

And I found out a lot in 1992, from some newspaper columns, and talk radio, and library research with which I followed it up.

Maybe now there are some more bloggers, but to mean anything it has to go viral.

Sammy Finkelman said...

Later on, Shirley Temple Abbott, actually got away with a letter to the New York Times, in which she claimed that the machine was defunct by the time Bill Clinton was growing up. But that's not true - it came back.

Bill Clinton's step-uncle, Raymond Clinton, was an important member of the machine.

By the way, just like Elizabeth Warren, Hillary Clinton even once claimed to have Indian ancestry!

http://www.wargs.com/political/rodham.html

In her autobiography, Living History, Sen. Clinton describes her maternal grandmother as “one of nine children from a family of French Canadian, Scottish and Native American ancestry”. No records have been found to support this claimed Native American ancestry.

Living History was published in 2003.

Apparently a rigorous 5th estate is only necessary if a republican is running for office.

Sammy Finkelman said...

The lie that Chelsea Clinton may be saying is that she doesn't know why her hair changed.

Chelsea Clinton used to be more honest. I remember looking at her face in 1992 on TV and saw how she looked - she evidently didn't like it when her father claimed he had balanced 11 budgets in a row.

(Arkansas had a 2-year budget, and also Bill Clinton hadn't been Governor for 11 years "in a row" He lost his re-election bid in 1980 and came back in 1982, probably with the help of money that Don Lasater made smuggling cocaine into Mena airport. (not the CIA of course! And it was all over by the time aid was cut off to the contras)

Nobody ever called him - or Al Gore - they both said it - this was a point they didn't want people to miss - on this business of budgets balanced "11 years in a row" business - as if it would have meant anything anyway.
