When I'm 64...

is... today.

ADDED: Meade IMs links to Grooveshark versions of the old Beatles song, first Judy Collins, then David Grisman. I love the David Grisman (including the location of the cottage — not the Isle of Wight but Tennessee — and the names of the children — not Vera, Chuck, and Dave but Elviry, Charles, and Dave). As for Judy Collins — dear lady, this is not your song. When I get older losing my hair... Judy Collins, bald? As a consequence of mere aging? Judy Collins has managed to get quite old while maintaining a full head of glorious hair.

Ah, 64. It was a very good year. A very good year, for blue-blooded husbands...of independent meaans...we'd ride in limousines....

Bake her a cake, Meade.

Hey, but where are Vera, Chuck and Dave? Shouldn't they be on your knee?

Happy Birthday.

Wow, Tank and Althouse almost born on the same day two years apart and both growing up in NJ.

Althouse, of course, was a serious student - first in her class type, while Tank was ... as a co-worker from Ecuador referred to me ... Jewish Hippie (pronounced JJJJJJHippie). That's when he was not calling me mattacone (sp?).

I am sure you and Meade can afford the cottage in the Isle of Wight, but it would require rather more travel than you have previously expressed a taste for. Oh, well. Happy Birthday!

The Beatles just keep on Giving to this generation of ours, setting even our sixties to a jaunty little rhythm, haha.

Happy day, Ann, happy year, happy life (a toast, clink!)

It's not the years in your life, but the life in your years.

You seem to be doing quite well.

Happy Birthday.

How topical! I'm drafting a blog post on retirement age. Do you have any such plans? I would guess your plan is to stick around as long as your health permits.

I'm betting 64 feels a lot different to you than you imagined it would when that song came out!!

Happy Birthday Ann. You have me by 2 months.

1951 .... what a year. Althouse, Rush and moi.

Meade said...

Good point, MayBee. She was sweet sixteen when the song came out just before the Summer of Love.

When my wife turned 64, I went to her Facebook page and wrote "Happy birthday. Yes, we still need you. Yes, we'll still feed you.". I caught hell.

"She was sweet sixteen when the song came out just before the Summer of Love"

Then this is her fourth 'sweet sixteen'.

That's math.

Happy birthday!

In the days of mandatory retirement, when it was 65, did people retire at the end of the year marked 65 or at the beginning?

I think it was the beginning. The year when you "are 65" is not your 65th year, but the end of your 65th year. You're in your 66th year.

I remember, years ago, responding to my then mother-in-law, who had just turned 60 and was talking about being in her "6th decade." I said, "Actually, it's your 7th decade." Her first reaction was contempt that I was saying something stupid again, which caused me to explain the arithmetic until she had to recognize that I was right, at which point, with me no longer stupid, I got the second reaction: I'm heartless and cruel.

I have a small business. Struggling to determine how to retire. Selling outright forces capital gains taxes to rear it's ugly head.

oh my! you too have mother-in-law stories, :) -- some aspects in life transcend country and cultural boundaries. I don't have a MiL story but I have FiL stories who competed with me as if he were my age.

That is a song that did not need any covers. Nobody was going to do it any better than the Beatles.

Thanks for sharing your thoughtful commentary on the day's events and spectacles; even when I think your judgment about this or that is mistaken, the lucidity and general good humour of your posts is a welcome part of my day. Ad multos annos!

That is a song that did not need any covers. Every song needs covers. Grisman's is very good.

Oh, yeah, and happy birthday, too.

I've exhausted my linguistic repertoire there. Alas, without all the accents and umlauts.

Judy Collins was the inspiration for a number of Stephen Stills' songs. If you haven't heard his "Manassas" album from 1972, you are missing out!

Birthdays are just proof that you aren't dead yet. It isn't birthdays that's the problem, it's when you stop having them. Growing older sure beats the alternative. Any day you wake up on the right side of the dirt can be a good day.

Just out of curiosity, when Meade is "doing the garden," are you "digging the weeds?"

I'd never really examined those subliminally subversive lyrics before. Who knew the Beetles were into drug culture. /sarc (end tag for the humor and humour impaired)-CP
