Ladies and gentlemen, the Republican Party has a genuine star. The Republican Party has a demonstrated, genuine hero and potential star in its ranks, and he is the governor of Wisconsin. His name is Scott Walker. Scott Walker has won three out of four elections in the last five or six years, regular gubernatorial races and a couple of recalls....He was supposed to say: Scott Walker has won 3 elections in 4 years, 2 regular gubernatorial races and one recall. That's 3 victories and no losses, within a shorter period, 4 years. If you want to declare someone a big star, get the evidence in his favor right!
That undercuts the value of what comes next. I don't feel that Rush has really been following the Scott Walker story, and this was one of those occasions when I felt that Rush was reading from a script. He tries to talk the same as when he's riffing, ad lib, with the same spontaneity and drama, but he always trips up a little, and when the tripping up comes in the form of misreading factual statements, and he doesn't notice the mistakes, it's really bad.
I'm reading the rest of the transcript — which I also heard as audio — and I'll just pull this out:
I watched his acceptance speech last night and I saw the epitome of class. I saw the epitome of dignity. I saw a guy who was genuinely happy and respectful, and not one shred of bitterness. No evidence of anger whatsoever. The entire Democrat Party power structure went into Wisconsin to take out Scott Walker three times in six years.Four years!
Scott Walker defeated his opponent, Mary Burke. Scott Walker defeated every national labor union. Scott Walker defeated Bill and Hillary Clinton. Scott Walker defeated Barack and Michelle Obama. In other words, Scott Walker defeated the A team, not once, not twice, but three times. And he did it with a conservative agenda. Scott Walker has been elected three times to stop Democrats in Wisconsin. You don't get much bluer as a state than Wisconsin used to be. University of Wisconsin is there, Madison. That's where Donna Shalala was the university president, where she came from. It is a blue state like Minnesota is a blue state, like New York is a blue state. Not to get too fussily intra-Wisconsin, but Donna Shalala wasn't "the university president," she was the chancellor at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, which is a branch of the University of Wisconsin System, which contains 13 4-year universities, 13 freshman-sophomore college campuses, and a statewide extension program. The president has the less glamorous task of running this elaborate and less elite higher education program that is distributed around the state. That's not what Donna Shalala did. I don't think I'm being too picky with this correction, because it's an important distinction when you are talking about the politics and populism of the people of the state of Wisconsin.
What's happened in Wisconsin doesn't get very much chatter because it's Wisconsin.Ha. He's admitting he doesn't pay much attention to Wisconsin. I know! It shows!
It's the upper Midwest, no real stars there...Paul Ryan? And, look, he's knocking not just Wisconsin but the whole "upper Midwest." Where the hell is his audience? I love the way he's implying that his own audience is boring people. He rails against coastal Americans, but he lets us see that he thinks they're the important people. He's paying attention to them. And we boring people of the Midwest are supposed to pay attention to him... as he talks about our governor and gets the basic facts wrong.

Not to quibble with your quibble....but UW faculty and alumni generally don't recognize the hyphenated parts of the UW system.
Well, Joni Ernst isn't a star. Yet.
Rush has an excellent acoustic Clapton version of Shalala.
No doubt somewhere on his site.
"Not to quibble with your quibble....but UW faculty and alumni generally don't recognize the hyphenated parts of the UW system."
Right. That is the elitism. And people here and elsewhere in the state say "University of Wisconsin" to mean "University of Wisconsin—Madison." Outsiders to Wisconsin use the longer name for this branch to be accurate, but it isn't needed around here. Only the other branches are referred to by the name of the branch.
And yet we say "chancellor" for the most prestigious leadership position. Those of use who say "University of Wisconsin" to mean "University of Wisconsin—Madison" would never mix up "chancellor" and "president."
He is counting the Supreme Court race as one of the elections that Walker won. This was probably the most important and the one that preserved the rest of Walker's actions.
Picky today, aren't we, Professor???
"It's the upper Midwest, no real stars there..."
Tim Pawlenty?
Joni Ernst?
SIX term governor Branstad (IA)?
Did either Clinton visit WI for Burke (Mary)? I don't recall.
(This is how well I pay attention?)
Rush always gets his facts a little bit wrong. You happened to notice in this case because you know the facts, but think of all the cases where you don't notice and still enjoy his show.
Usage of Chancellor vs President titles varies across the country. Here in Texas, the Chancellor is the system level person, while the President = UW Chancellor
Rush is a sloppy talker. In his attempts to promote, he screws it up. I think Mark Steyn should take over.
This sort of stuff is one of the more irritating things about Rush. He's a very entertaining guy and often can frame things in interesting ways, but When he gets some minor details wrong or he flubs it can undercut a valid point. The other things I find tedious is his taking calls, spending too much show time promoting his books, and spending too much time talking about NFL stuff.
Ernst WILL be a star. You can book it.
By "Scott Walker has won three out of four elections in the last five or six years," I suspect Rush is alluding to President Obama winning Wisconsin in 2012.
Scott Walker didn't deliver Wisconsin for the Republicans in 2012. Sure, that was Congressman Paul Ryan's job too, but Walker leads the statewide party.
The question of whether a potential Presidential candidate can carry his own state in the Presidential race is very material. That's the knock on Chris Christie in New Jersey.
Some of that elitism dates back to when the schools were not, in fact, part of the same system. When the University of Wisc0nsin - Green Bay was being set up(in the late 1960's), it was a big deal for it to be the University of Wisconsin (just like UW_Madison and UW Milwaukee) and not a 'Wisconsin State University' like lowly Stevens Point, Eau Claire, etc. A few years later they merged the systems and everyone got to be a "University of Wisconsin". Sort of like Lake Wobegone where all the children are above average
At least he hasn't referred to the Packers home as Lambert Field.
Well El Rushbo enjoys the sound of his own voice--and he's always been a bit sloppy with the facts. Doesn't want mere facts to get in the way of a good story.
So Ms. Althouuse, what's your quibble with El Rushbo being El Rushbo? He's an entertainer--not the legend in his own mind, nor is he yet the terrible Darth Vader Dragon that the libs would make of him.
There's a long tradition of political blowhard pundits. Bill Blowhard O'Reilly is one on Fox news. Rachel Madcow does her best with a heaping serving of snark on MSNBC. Of course Ms. Maddow is not as smart as she thinks she is, but that's all part of the shtick. Chris Hayes is Pajama Boy in a suit and "serious glasses". Chris Matthews is afflicted with tingles up his leg. Larry O'Donnell can't say "lesbian sex" often enough when talking about Dick Cheney's daughter.
I could go on--but everyone of these folks would benefit from about six month's training in the Keokuk Iowa Academy for Clowns and Part Time School Custodians.
Rush must be the last guy in the United States to smoke cigars.
I always picture him strolling down a 1910 New York City sidewalk, top hat in hand, kicking pesky orphans face-first into manure-strewn gutters.
Ah, yes, I'm very fond of children. Girl children, Lena Dunham, around eighteen and twenty.
Don't be a fuddy-duddy, Miss Pelosi. Don't be a mooncalf, Mr. Reid! Don't be a jabbernowl! You're not those, are you?
A real-life Egbert Souse. Accent-grave over the e!
Rush probably had a late night. It wouldn't surprise me if his brain is still recovering.
Simply use HMFIC for any of them. Problem solved.
And people here and elsewhere in the state say "University of Wisconsin" to mean "University of Wisconsin—Madison."
Speak for your elitist self. Most "hyphenated" grads and students refer to you as UW-Madison.
Go Warhawks!
"Did either Clinton visit WI for Burke (Mary)? I don't recall."
Bill did. Not Hillary.
Boss Vos and his Tea Party legislature promise to do away with all that pointy head science stuff going on in the UW System and make it more of an arm of the corporate community. This fail parade is just getting started and it will be so fun to watch unfold.
Rush must suffer from the Althouse travel adversion too I expect he knows the Missouri area and has been to Hollywood, New York and Miami. But Rush refuses to travel way up north to learn the local culture in The Land O the Lakes.
Why he would have to travel the same long distance back if he did.
Garage! You're back! Our own leftist Cliff Claven. glad to see you're still you. I'm sure this week has been a shock to the system.
Oh, those provincial New Yorkers...
garage mahal: "Boss Vos and his Tea Party legislature promise to do away with all that pointy head science stuff going on in the UW System and make it more of an arm of the corporate community."
Gee, I wonder if garage has accurately and honestly characterized what the reality is here?
LOL
RecChief: "Garage! You're back! Our own leftist Cliff Claven."
Small quibble Rec. Cliffy was full of obscure facts but they were still actual facts.
That is not really analogous to garage's performance on this blog.
"SIX term governor Branstad (IA)?"
As an Iowan, I'm proud of the fact that we've had something like 4 governors in 100 years. Earlier there was Bob Ray for about umpty terms, now Terry B.
Says a lot about good old Iowa moderate Republicans.
Rush's factual errors.
The perfect is the enemy of the good. To his general audience, who also don't know Madison trivia, it makes no difference.
I'm sure this week has been a shock to the system.
Yes, I was really shocked Democrats gave up voter fraud after every one of your posts was warning us it was coming.

You have shown me that you are true compass on all things political...I just have to look at where the back of the needle is pointing.
I've been looking for your commentary since Wed. morning..started to get worried..glad to see your ok.

Republicans hate Madison, and they hate UW Madison. But on the campaign trail they are all wearing Wisconsin Badger sports wear.

You know he tapped that shit
I don't read him to say people don't care about the upper mid west, I read him to say the chattering classes don't care. And they don't--it is, after all, flyover country.
Paul Ryan may be famous, but I wouldn't say he is a star. He was a big mistake for Romney. His budget was nonsense from a mathematical perspective. Those silly pictures of him working out were embarrassing. His debate performance was inadequate.
Walker on the other hand is a star who is not yet famous enough. I hope that changes quickly. I have never been so happy about the results of a governors race, and I don't even live in the state.
"But on the campaign trail they are all wearing Wisconsin Badger sports wear."
Every outstate UW-Hyphen alum fancies themselves a Madison grad on football Saturday and dresses accordingly.
Althouse,
Plenty of the stuff you point out are actually errors. However I think that last bit ("no stars") is him using the voice of the MSM, don't you think?
Undoubtedly, it will be more fun for garage to watch Walker and the Tea Party double super destroy Wisconsin than it would be for him to watch Mary Burke save it from already being destroyed by Walker. Or whatever the hell he thinks Walker has done to the state. You'd think this uncouth non-college-grad had dropped thirty nukes on the state already. Twice. Maybe even three times.
Dems have been waiting in the wings.....to steal two seats after getting crushed. GREAT theory. I think you really nailed it here.
They'll limit the damage if they can, yes.
garage: "Republicans hate Madison, and they hate UW Madison. But on the campaign trail they are all wearing Wisconsin Badger sports wear."
Dems hate the south and the big west states and they really hate oil and gas. But in press conferences they take credit for energy independence and lower gas prices and then offer to drink Kentucky Bourbon with republicans.
Ah, criticism from a woman who thought Obama would make a good president. Yours is the more egregious error, lady.
MadisonMan: "There are Republicans in the state Legislature who make political Hay out of trashing the great UW, yes."
Hmmm, that's a bit too general of a response.
I'm asking more specifically about this assertion:
garage: "Boss Vos and his Tea Party legislature promise to do away with all that pointy head science stuff going on in the UW System and make it more of an arm of the corporate community."
So, are republicans in WI looking "to do away with ALL that pointy head science stuff" or not?

Really?
You want a debate about science from a guy who gets his science information from Marvel Comics?
Rusty: "Really?

Of course I was not debating garage on this. What would be the point? His "science" understanding goes about as far as Lena Dunham.
I was asking MadisonMan.
So, are republicans in WI looking "to do away with ALL that pointy head science stuff" or not?
That is too broad a statement.
I think, though, that Legislators who attack their own state University are cutting off their noses to spite their face. I question what kind of return they get at the ballot box, as many of their constituents are either alumni or friends with alumni.
Yes, I was really shocked Democrats gave up voter fraud after every one of your posts was warning us it was coming.
Just because they weren't successful doesn't mean they didn't try. This administration has not been lauded for its competence.
garage maintains he's a high school graduate? Humph, I think he's just boasting.
Virginia, Arizona (02), Louisiana
Illinois, Maryland, and I may have witnessed an example here in the heartland, although with the lax laws on voter registration and voting, I can't be sure.
MadisonMan: "That is too broad a statement."
Well, lets help garage out here (since he clearly needs it).
What specific "pointy head science stuff going on in the UW System" are Republicans looking "to do away with"?

Oh, c'mon, don't be that way. I was genuinely worried. I was wondering if someone needed to go do a welfare check on you.
That is too broad a statement.
Here is the Tea Party Agenda: Reform UW System schools to be responsive to Wisconsin job markets and economic needs.
"Vos, a Rochester Republican, said the system needs to ensure that instructors teach students and focus research efforts on how to grow the economy, not on, as he put it, "ancient mating habits of whatever."
More vouchers. Piss test the poor and unemployed. More money in politics. Make it harder to investigate their activities. Only until after they are total dictators immune to any scrutiny can the citizenry be free!
More money in politics.
Dem Super PACs outspent Republican Super PACs $374 million to $239 million in this election. Your concern about money in politics is absolutely precious

MM, you make suck a big deal about not favoring incumbents, and the importance of sincerity of politicians, and then you post this shit.
But then again you were for the high speed train and against it. So ...
interesting to hear garage's wails and lamentations. Where was his righteous anger when Obama was getting millions of dollars in donations from anonymous foreign sources? Why didn't he rant about the lack of an investigation into it?
Is he just a partisan hack, a sub-par intellect who because of his inability to understand rational arguments feels threatened by more intelligent humans (and about 15 species of other fauna)and automatically responds with anger and invective, or is there some other explanation for it?
And God forbid that the U of W be asked to be responsive to the economic needs of the people in the state who fund it.
You must be evil to ask for that.
Where was his righteous anger when Obama was getting millions of dollars in donations from anonymous foreign sources?
You don't understand. I'm laughing. I hope it burns down to the ground. The faster the better.
"Republicans hate Madison, and they hate UW Madison."
30% of Madison voters are Republicans. We love Madison and UW. We just keep our heads down, that's all. So you D's don't bite them off.
It wasn't an acceptance speech: Walker wasn't nominated for anything. It was a victory speech.
Haven't heard him in a long while but Rush used to call Instapundit Instant Pundit.
The only thing garage knows about UW is that he couldn't get in it.
Limbaugh is not infrequently careless with his facts, but not the big ones. His overall themes are often insightful and correct.
I haven't been in Wisonsin since I was seven years old, and Ive never once heard UW-Madison referred to as anything else but "Wisconsin". I don't consider that a slipup.
And he said "president" instead of "chancellor"? That too is inside baseball to 99.9% of his audience, because it had nothing to do with the essence of his point.
I think, though, that Legislators who attack their own state University are cutting off their noses to spite their face. I question what kind of return they get at the ballot box, as many of their constituents are either alumni or friends with alumni.
Honestly, colleges should be made to explain why their tuition has increased, year after year, to insane levels.
If a student can afford the tuition, they likely do not NEED the education in the first place.
I think states should bring every college President to hearings and demand answers on stemming the tide of insane increases in cost and the over-proliferation of unserious majors.
...then address their blatantly unconstitutional actions towards students.
As an outsider, that seems a rather pointless critique. When people utter the words "University of Wisconsin", they are referring to Madison almost every single time.
Much like when they mention my alma mater "University of South Carolina", they are almost always referring to Columbia, not one of the other campuses (campii? what is the plural?)
Heck, ask professors why there are so few conservatives in the faculty.
And when they say "Because they don't want to do that", ask them if they can name one other group in existence that the same could be said of.
The only thing garage knows about UW is that he couldn't get in it.
Whatevs, FIB. You didn't even grow up in Wisconsin.
Walker is a great governor of Wisconsin and a fighter who has won battles that others in other states have lost. Like balance the budget, make public service employees pay into the pension system so it doesn't go broke on them. But could he do the same for 50 states? He'd have to think of them as "federal" as just one state - in other words, he'd have to do big government. I think that is why he isn't a star though he seems as if he should be. He'd have to run against big government and have a dismantling plan. He had a plan for Wisconsin remember.
But if he had a big government dismantling plan I'd stand with Scott Walker. Like to picture the Democrat remnant of Congress scuttling out of the country - Toronto? Or picture Ruth Bader Ginsberg accusing Scalia of a chokehold. Or people talking about lefsa instead of kale. Lot of innovations from here could brighten up DC.
colleges should be made to explain why their tuition has increased, year after year, to insane levels.
Because they can. Because there is a demand for College Degrees. Because the Federal Government underwrites funding that allows it. Because the number of Administrators has gone through the roof as part of an unbroadcast jobs program for Women's Studies graduates.

Wisconsin had the best-funded Pension System before Walker. (Still does).
State budgets are never balanced (Don't believe the Hype). Sure, they're required per Constitutions to be balanced -- but it never happens.

For the record, I don't "hate" incumbents. I simply prefer them to lose elections -- but I did vote for 1 incumbent on Tuesday! See? I'm not consistent.
(And when have I been against the train? I love trains!)
State budgets are never balanced (Don't believe the Hype). Sure, they're required per Constitutions to be balanced -- but it never happens.
I see. And just how have these deficits been financed over the ages of the "never balanced" budget?
Wisconsin's economy creates more than 250,000 new good jobs over the next 4 years.
I'm not sure about that. It would be great if it happened. Wisconsin's Economy depends a good deal on the National Economy...and I'm not clairvoyant, but I don't see consistent growth.
And won't Unions be trying to suppress job growth here to "punish" Scott Walker (as they can't seem to have him elected out of office). It's true I'm not sure how they could do that -- but I wonder.
However, some of my predictions in the past have been wrong.
Wisconsin's economy creates more than 250,000 new good jobs over the next 4 years
Perhaps you haven't heard; we don't have a job problem because everyone who wants a job has a job.
That is why Walker's plan for the state doesn't include a jobs creation bill. No need for it, that problem is already completely taken care of.
Great! Then 250K more will be icing on the cake.
And when have I been against the train? I love trains!
Based on his previous behavior, he has most likely convinced himself that you are posting under many different names and is holding you accountable for things said by someone else.

One of Walkers original campaign for governor positions was in opposition for that stupid HSR line...you came out for it and then later against it. I called you out om it at the time.
In this case I think it's odd for someone who constantly indicates he's against incumbency to lament a pol's actions that could hurt one's chances for re-election.
Your name is PurplePenguin
Really? I thought you said my name was "shortbus" before. Or was it Corky? So hard to keep up with whatever crap you're throwing this time.
What is really funny is that not only are none of those my name, but nobody named any of those have even posted on this blog.
And despite your constant claims of it "never happening", Meade absolutely did point out the mistake you've been making this entire time about calling me "Purplepenguin". You're a deluded fool who can't pay attention to even the simplest of details, let alone solve The Great Althouse Sockpuppet Caper. Especially since there is nothing to solve.

So what or who were you referring to penguin?
Plenty of jobs in Minnesota. In fact, Walker is advertising jobs in Minnesota on a website. He won't stop until everyone in Wisconsin who wants a job can find a job. In Minnesota.
I've noticed that over the past couple of weeks that Rush has been tripping over words and misspeaking much more often than he ever did before, including when he is speaking extemporaneously. I hope that he sees a physician about it.

"

Just google "Burke economic plan" to learn more about the term.
BTW, your comment suggested you were unable to locate Gov Walker's jobs plan albeit probably in bad faith internet forum warmode that so many of these discussions suffer from. At any rate, I found it pretty easy to locate. http://www.scottwalker.com/issues/jobs
I really urge democrats to think about what they are doing when they fight politics the way they've fought Gov Walker. Having to run for office over and over and over again makes it difficult to do anything else. Having to fight weird litigation is similarly costly. Too much of this stuff is utterly political. Let's have those battles on election day, and then wait until the next election. The prosecution of Perry, the lawfare against Palin, and the behavior targeting Walker, have definitely gotten in the way of real progress. Real people are affected.
So read up on Walker's plan and try to figure out a way to help. If you still disagree with him during the next election season, campaign and vote accordingly, but Wisconsin really does need a break from that stuff for a few years.
One of Walkers original campaign for governor positions was in opposition for that stupid HSR line...you came out for it and then later against it.
Not something I recall doing.
MadisonMan:
Do you remember telling me AGW was real and the paper I cited by those German physicists was (on second thought I believe your response was to place your pointer fingers in your ears) no biggie.
Good times.
Now where has that warming been? Can you show me where it has been these last 5 years? 15?
I am patient and will ask again in another 5 years.
Birkel, My recollection is that the paper by the German Physicists (was this the one that purported to disprove the Greenhouse Effect in its entirety?) has been soundly disproven (I believe they ignored entropy? Something like that?)
This is likely to be the warmest year on record. (Link). My recollection from somewhere is that we've had the warmest 12-month period this year -- ending in September? For those of you who quail at the use of just calendar months to describe a year.
So what's your question, really?
Masison Man:
German physicists. Care to respond? As a Walker voter I'm curious your response. Thank You.
* Madison Man.
That is why Walker's plan for the state doesn't include a jobs creation bill
Maybe he as "Get the hell out of the way of people engaging in commerce" jobs plan. I like those kind.
MadisonMan:
Wrong about the paper. But nice try.
Warmest year on record? That's funny stuff. Those god damned satellites just keep lying to us. Fucking space junk!
I tried to answer Birkel without being pedantic. Did I succeed?
Well, if you want an actual answer about the paper, some more identifying content would be helpful. There are more than two German Physicists in the world.
I like "the discard my toxic waste from my operation anywhere plan". Rivers. Parking lots. Someone elses back yard. Just like John Menard. Can someone give me a hell yeah? Get off my back!
If you put it anywhere, you can save big money.
Those god damned satellites just keep lying to us. Fucking space junk!
Every weather forecast model used uses satellite data. The ones that use the most (sadly, not the US) do the best.
The University of Wisconsin, of course, leads the way in Satellite Meteorology. (UW-Madison, that is). Satellite Meteorology was born here, you might say.
Lest you say I'm making stuff up [I never do!}. Menards is a really strange, bad Wisconsin company. ANd large Walker donor.
John Menard, Retail Bizarro
In response to the most recent charges of dumping herbicides, a Menards spokesperson claimed “a young part-time team member poured some weed killer” on the parking island at a store, “thinking it would kill the weeds.” The spokesperson also said Menard hired a consultant and concluded no environmental damage was done.
The only problem with this explanation is that the herbicide was dumped in January, not the best time to be killing (or finding) weeds. As for that consultant’s report, it was done two years after the dumping, rather late in the game to determine the impact. But perhaps the drollest idea is that a rogue member of the Menards team decided to stroll out of the store with a pallet of herbicide.
snip
The classic example was in 1997, when the billionaire owner was caught using his own pickup truck to haul plastic bags filled with chromium and arsenic-laden wood ash to his own home to dispose in his household garbage. Menard and his company were ultimately fined $1.7 million for 21 violations.
This is likely to be the warmest year on record.
How about no.

MadisonMan,
Jsut for same balanced studying, try these links, here, here, and here
Since NOAA has a fair number of CAGW alarmists in its ranks, there have been some odd decisions about test machinery, data interpretation, and the like. I'm not saying that everything that comes from NOAA is wrong. However, as we march forward in time, CAGW alarmists have grown more hyperbolic in their pronouncements. I'm still skeptical about many of their claims, and extremely skeptical of their policy prescriptions to deal with the problem, if it can be dealt with at all.
Madison Man is hard to figure out. He's a scientist and a Walker voter. Maybe he loves conflict?
Our Germans are better than their Germans.
And, look, he's knocking not just Wisconsin but the whole "upper Midwest." Where the hell is his audience?
It's pretty passive. You've just run into one of many examples of arrogance - What the Great Man Pronounceth is Important because he's the Great Man. Small details like the facts you notice are insignificant in HIS scheme of things. I've heard callers on the program catch him up, and he steamrolls right over them.
Too bad, because he provides a service that hardly anyone else can. Just needs some perfecting.
RecChief, that middle link is an odd one. They seem to complain about the time honored process of adjusting the 30-yr mean every ten years? I'm not sure to what end. If you are comparing temperatures ove the course of a century, maybe a 100-yr mean makes sense, but regardless of the sampling time, the temperature trend is the same, only the magnitude of the anomaly changes.
For the 3rd link, I'll note that Marty Hoerling got his PhD at the UW-Madison (just to bring this back on topic). If you can find an utterance by me that says anything more than the (delightful) early Spring warmth of 2012 was consistent with what would happen under Global Warming, I would be very surprised. I'm not responsible for what people with a political axe to grind say.
The first link will have to wait til tomorrow. I'm fighting a cold and trying to win, so that means sleep.
Madison Man wrote: The University of Wisconsin, of course, leads the way in Satellite Meteorology. (UW-Madison, that is). Satellite Meteorology was born here, you might say.
Have you heard of the late John McNall? He was a neighbor in Middleton.
I understood Rush's comment about nothing going on in Wisconsin or the Midwest as the attitude of the elites...not his own attitude. Also, I think he was referring to the Supreme Court recall as one of the battles that Gov Walker won.

He is using this crazy skill called critical thinking.

Wattsupwiththat is a blogger that digs into the studies done on many things but global warming is hit there a lot. If you do a search for NOAA there you get that link.
The jist of most NOAA posts there are that the NOAA gets grants to study global warming. If it doesn't find global warming the grants end. This is true for most "scientists" who apply for grants. The government wants more studies proving global warming and "scientists" are happy to oblige if they get more grants. He just rips on the studies because they "adjust" the raw data so much.
In the 70's the government gave grants to scientists predicting a little ice age. Interestingly the solution to stopping the little ice age that was going to destroy the planet was to give the government lots of regulating authority and create a massive new international bureaucracy. It is almost as if the answer to everything is lots of regulating authority and a massive new bureaucracy.
It goes way back garage He refuses to visit Madison or bigger cities, No crabbed hermit, he just prefers country values - Life Magazine 1941
I know I linked this before, but I was thinking garage might like the picture of a true Wisconsin conservative to cheer him up.
garage,
Lots of people who love science vote Republican. It is the people who believe whatever the press says about the science, rather than investigating the science itself who vote Democrat.
I minored in physics in college. I majored in Literature. This puts me in the somewhat unique position of being able to read the papers knowing enough of the math to interpret the papers directly, and enough about rhetoric to understand that there is an imposition of a narrative between the public and the actual science that involves the politics of the writers of that narrative as they create an "implied author" of "science" with an implied absolute authority.
Not to mention that the whole thing is a great way to herd liberals to the Democrat party.
I think the whole thing is fascinating. It may not be turtles all the way down, there may be a bottom there, but it is so far, turtles as far down as we can see.

That is too broad a statement.
Here is the Tea Party Agenda: Reform UW System schools to be responsive to Wisconsin job markets and economic needs."
That's right, garage. Job markets and economic needs. Exactly right. The Wisconsin Idea. Ever heard of it?
I only read about half the comments here. Maybe someone else points this out, but Rush's other mistake in this is his claim that Wisconsin is as blue as the bluest of states. This is absolutely not so. It is a divided state, and I am sure Scott Walker understands this far better than Rush does. It ought to be a warning to Republicans to watch out for hubris. Blue America is still strong. It lost a great many races by small margins, and so the numbers are overwhelmingly disastrous for the Blue Democrats. They do have a problem. But the Blue Democrats are not Blue America.
I think one thing that Republicans are doing is GOTV in urban areas. Even if they are getting a smaller percentage of the vote, it is easier than driving around, for example the Adirondacks, to pick up votes by onesies and twosies where the percentages are a lot higher for them.
