Rush Limbaugh muffs his paean to Scott Walker.

From yesterday's show:
Ladies and gentlemen, the Republican Party has a genuine star. The Republican Party has a demonstrated, genuine hero and potential star in its ranks, and he is the governor of  Wisconsin. His name is Scott Walker. Scott Walker has won three out of four elections in the last five or six years, regular gubernatorial races and a couple of recalls....
He was supposed to say: Scott Walker has won 3 elections in 4 years, 2 regular gubernatorial races and one recall. That's 3 victories and no losses, within a shorter period, 4 years. If you want to declare someone a big star, get the evidence in his favor right!

That undercuts the value of what comes next. I don't feel that Rush has really been following the Scott Walker story, and this was one of those occasions when I felt that Rush was reading from a script. He tries to talk the same as when he's riffing, ad lib, with the same spontaneity and drama, but he always trips up a little, and when the tripping up comes in the form of misreading factual statements, and he doesn't notice the mistakes, it's really bad.

I'm reading the rest of the transcript — which I also heard as audio — and I'll just pull this out:
I watched his acceptance speech last night and I saw the epitome of class. I saw the epitome of dignity. I saw a guy who was genuinely happy and respectful, and not one shred of bitterness. No evidence of anger whatsoever. The entire Democrat Party power structure went into Wisconsin to take out Scott Walker three times in six years.
Four years!
Scott Walker defeated his opponent, Mary Burke. Scott Walker defeated every national labor union. Scott Walker defeated Bill and Hillary Clinton. Scott Walker defeated Barack and Michelle Obama. In other words, Scott Walker defeated the A team, not once, not twice, but three times. And he did it with a conservative agenda. Scott Walker has been elected three times to stop Democrats in Wisconsin. You don't get much bluer as a state than Wisconsin used to be. University of Wisconsin is there, Madison. That's where Donna Shalala was the university president, where she came from. It is a blue state like Minnesota is a blue state, like New York is a blue state.
Not to get too fussily intra-Wisconsin, but Donna Shalala wasn't "the university president," she was the chancellor at the University of Wisconsin—Madison, which is a branch of the University of Wisconsin System, which contains 13 4-year universities, 13 freshman-sophomore college campuses, and a statewide extension program. The president has the less glamorous task of running this elaborate and less elite higher education program that is distributed around the state. That's not what Donna Shalala did. I don't think I'm being too picky with this correction, because it's an important distinction when you are talking about the politics and populism of the people of the state of Wisconsin.
What's happened in Wisconsin doesn't get very much chatter because it's Wisconsin.
Ha. He's admitting he doesn't pay much attention to Wisconsin. I know! It shows!
It's the upper Midwest, no real stars there...
Paul Ryan? And, look, he's knocking not just Wisconsin but the whole "upper Midwest." Where the hell is his audience? I love the way he's implying that his own audience is boring people. He rails against coastal Americans, but he lets us see that he thinks they're the important people. He's paying attention to them. And we boring people of the Midwest are supposed to pay attention to him... as he talks about our governor and gets the basic facts wrong.

Right. That is the elitism. And people here and elsewhere in the state say "University of Wisconsin" to mean "University of Wisconsin—Madison." Outsiders to Wisconsin use the longer name for this branch to be accurate, but it isn't needed around here. Only the other branches are referred to by the name of the branch.

And yet we say "chancellor" for the most prestigious leadership position. Those of use who say "University of Wisconsin" to mean "University of Wisconsin—Madison" would never mix up "chancellor" and "president."

He is counting the Supreme Court race as one of the elections that Walker won. This was probably the most important and the one that preserved the rest of Walker's actions.

Rush is a sloppy talker. In his attempts to promote, he screws it up. I think Mark Steyn should take over.

This sort of stuff is one of the more irritating things about Rush. He's a very entertaining guy and often can frame things in interesting ways, but When he gets some minor details wrong or he flubs it can undercut a valid point. The other things I find tedious is his taking calls, spending too much show time promoting his books, and spending too much time talking about NFL stuff.

Ernst WILL be a star. You can book it.

Left Bank of the Charles said...

By "Scott Walker has won three out of four elections in the last five or six years," I suspect Rush is alluding to President Obama winning Wisconsin in 2012.

Scott Walker didn't deliver Wisconsin for the Republicans in 2012. Sure, that was Congressman Paul Ryan's job too, but Walker leads the statewide party.

The question of whether a potential Presidential candidate can carry his own state in the Presidential race is very material. That's the knock on Chris Christie in New Jersey.

WhoKnew said...

Some of that elitism dates back to when the schools were not, in fact, part of the same system. When the University of Wisc0nsin - Green Bay was being set up(in the late 1960's), it was a big deal for it to be the University of Wisconsin (just like UW_Madison and UW Milwaukee) and not a 'Wisconsin State University' like lowly Stevens Point, Eau Claire, etc. A few years later they merged the systems and everyone got to be a "University of Wisconsin". Sort of like Lake Wobegone where all the children are above average

Well El Rushbo enjoys the sound of his own voice--and he's always been a bit sloppy with the facts. Doesn't want mere facts to get in the way of a good story.

So Ms. Althouuse, what's your quibble with El Rushbo being El Rushbo? He's an entertainer--not the legend in his own mind, nor is he yet the terrible Darth Vader Dragon that the libs would make of him.

There's a long tradition of political blowhard pundits. Bill Blowhard O'Reilly is one on Fox news. Rachel Madcow does her best with a heaping serving of snark on MSNBC. Of course Ms. Maddow is not as smart as she thinks she is, but that's all part of the shtick. Chris Hayes is Pajama Boy in a suit and "serious glasses". Chris Matthews is afflicted with tingles up his leg. Larry O'Donnell can't say "lesbian sex" often enough when talking about Dick Cheney's daughter.

I could go on--but everyone of these folks would benefit from about six month's training in the Keokuk Iowa Academy for Clowns and Part Time School Custodians.

Honestly, colleges should be made to explain why their tuition has increased, year after year, to insane levels.

If a student can afford the tuition, they likely do not NEED the education in the first place.

I think states should bring every college President to hearings and demand answers on stemming the tide of insane increases in cost and the over-proliferation of unserious majors.

Walker is a great governor of Wisconsin and a fighter who has won battles that others in other states have lost. Like balance the budget, make public service employees pay into the pension system so it doesn't go broke on them. But could he do the same for 50 states? He'd have to think of them as "federal" as just one state - in other words, he'd have to do big government. I think that is why he isn't a star though he seems as if he should be. He'd have to run against big government and have a dismantling plan. He had a plan for Wisconsin remember.

But if he had a big government dismantling plan I'd stand with Scott Walker. Like to picture the Democrat remnant of Congress scuttling out of the country - Toronto? Or picture Ruth Bader Ginsberg accusing Scalia of a chokehold. Or people talking about lefsa instead of kale. Lot of innovations from here could brighten up DC.

BTW, your comment suggested you were unable to locate Gov Walker's jobs plan albeit probably in bad faith internet forum warmode that so many of these discussions suffer from. At any rate, I found it pretty easy to locate. http://www.scottwalker.com/issues/jobs

I really urge democrats to think about what they are doing when they fight politics the way they've fought Gov Walker. Having to run for office over and over and over again makes it difficult to do anything else. Having to fight weird litigation is similarly costly. Too much of this stuff is utterly political. Let's have those battles on election day, and then wait until the next election. The prosecution of Perry, the lawfare against Palin, and the behavior targeting Walker, have definitely gotten in the way of real progress. Real people are affected.

So read up on Walker's plan and try to figure out a way to help. If you still disagree with him during the next election season, campaign and vote accordingly, but Wisconsin really does need a break from that stuff for a few years.

This is likely to be the warmest year on record. (Link). My recollection from somewhere is that we've had the warmest 12-month period this year -- ending in September? For those of you who quail at the use of just calendar months to describe a year.

So what's your question, really?

That is why Walker's plan for the state doesn't include a jobs creation bill

Maybe he as "Get the hell out of the way of people engaging in commerce" jobs plan. I like those kind.

Wrong about the paper. But nice try.

Warmest year on record? That's funny stuff. Those god damned satellites just keep lying to us. Fucking space junk!

I tried to answer Birkel without being pedantic. Did I succeed?

MadisonMan said...

Well, if you want an actual answer about the paper, some more identifying content would be helpful. There are more than two German Physicists in the world.

Every weather forecast model used uses satellite data. The ones that use the most (sadly, not the US) do the best.

The University of Wisconsin, of course, leads the way in Satellite Meteorology. (UW-Madison, that is). Satellite Meteorology was born here, you might say.

Lest you say I'm making stuff up [I never do!}. Menards is a really strange, bad Wisconsin company. ANd large Walker donor.

John Menard, Retail Bizarro

In response to the most recent charges of dumping herbicides, a Menards spokesperson claimed “a young part-time team member poured some weed killer” on the parking island at a store, “thinking it would kill the weeds.” The spokesperson also said Menard hired a consultant and concluded no environmental damage was done.

The only problem with this explanation is that the herbicide was dumped in January, not the best time to be killing (or finding) weeds. As for that consultant’s report, it was done two years after the dumping, rather late in the game to determine the impact. But perhaps the drollest idea is that a rogue member of the Menards team decided to stroll out of the store with a pallet of herbicide.

snip

The classic example was in 1997, when the billionaire owner was caught using his own pickup truck to haul plastic bags filled with chromium and arsenic-laden wood ash to his own home to dispose in his household garbage. Menard and his company were ultimately fined $1.7 million for 21 violations.

MadisonMan,
Jsut for same balanced studying, try these links, here, here, and here

Since NOAA has a fair number of CAGW alarmists in its ranks, there have been some odd decisions about test machinery, data interpretation, and the like. I'm not saying that everything that comes from NOAA is wrong. However, as we march forward in time, CAGW alarmists have grown more hyperbolic in their pronouncements. I'm still skeptical about many of their claims, and extremely skeptical of their policy prescriptions to deal with the problem, if it can be dealt with at all.

And, look, he's knocking not just Wisconsin but the whole "upper Midwest." Where the hell is his audience?

It's pretty passive. You've just run into one of many examples of arrogance - What the Great Man Pronounceth is Important because he's the Great Man. Small details like the facts you notice are insignificant in HIS scheme of things. I've heard callers on the program catch him up, and he steamrolls right over them.

Too bad, because he provides a service that hardly anyone else can. Just needs some perfecting.

RecChief, that middle link is an odd one. They seem to complain about the time honored process of adjusting the 30-yr mean every ten years? I'm not sure to what end. If you are comparing temperatures ove the course of a century, maybe a 100-yr mean makes sense, but regardless of the sampling time, the temperature trend is the same, only the magnitude of the anomaly changes.

For the 3rd link, I'll note that Marty Hoerling got his PhD at the UW-Madison (just to bring this back on topic). If you can find an utterance by me that says anything more than the (delightful) early Spring warmth of 2012 was consistent with what would happen under Global Warming, I would be very surprised. I'm not responsible for what people with a political axe to grind say.

The first link will have to wait til tomorrow. I'm fighting a cold and trying to win, so that means sleep.

Have you heard of the late John McNall? He was a neighbor in Middleton.

I understood Rush's comment about nothing going on in Wisconsin or the Midwest as the attitude of the elites...not his own attitude. Also, I think he was referring to the Supreme Court recall as one of the battles that Gov Walker won.

Wattsupwiththat is a blogger that digs into the studies done on many things but global warming is hit there a lot. If you do a search for NOAA there you get that link.

The jist of most NOAA posts there are that the NOAA gets grants to study global warming. If it doesn't find global warming the grants end. This is true for most "scientists" who apply for grants. The government wants more studies proving global warming and "scientists" are happy to oblige if they get more grants. He just rips on the studies because they "adjust" the raw data so much.

In the 70's the government gave grants to scientists predicting a little ice age. Interestingly the solution to stopping the little ice age that was going to destroy the planet was to give the government lots of regulating authority and create a massive new international bureaucracy. It is almost as if the answer to everything is lots of regulating authority and a massive new bureaucracy.

garage,

Lots of people who love science vote Republican. It is the people who believe whatever the press says about the science, rather than investigating the science itself who vote Democrat.

I minored in physics in college. I majored in Literature. This puts me in the somewhat unique position of being able to read the papers knowing enough of the math to interpret the papers directly, and enough about rhetoric to understand that there is an imposition of a narrative between the public and the actual science that involves the politics of the writers of that narrative as they create an "implied author" of "science" with an implied absolute authority.

Not to mention that the whole thing is a great way to herd liberals to the Democrat party.

I think the whole thing is fascinating. It may not be turtles all the way down, there may be a bottom there, but it is so far, turtles as far down as we can see.

I only read about half the comments here. Maybe someone else points this out, but Rush's other mistake in this is his claim that Wisconsin is as blue as the bluest of states. This is absolutely not so. It is a divided state, and I am sure Scott Walker understands this far better than Rush does. It ought to be a warning to Republicans to watch out for hubris. Blue America is still strong. It lost a great many races by small margins, and so the numbers are overwhelmingly disastrous for the Blue Democrats. They do have a problem. But the Blue Democrats are not Blue America.

tim in vermont said...

I think one thing that Republicans are doing is GOTV in urban areas. Even if they are getting a smaller percentage of the vote, it is easier than driving around, for example the Adirondacks, to pick up votes by onesies and twosies where the percentages are a lot higher for them.
