"Canada was a key part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) operations in Afghanistan. Though that participation ended earlier this year, America's neighbor to the North was a key player there, providing a great deal of assistance. Canada is also hardly some socialist, anti-American critic. Since 2004, it's been led by Conservative Prime Minister, Stephen Harper. It's policies on the Keystone pipeline and taxes (leading to the Burger King 'inversion') are more in-step with America's Republican Party moderates. And most importantly, Canada has been a strong ally in the war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria."
Writes polisci prof John A. Tures.
And, over in the National Review: "Glenn Greenwald Blames Canada for Terror Attack — Against Canada."

My favorite headline so far came from the Globe and Mail.
"Ottawa shooter has a dark side"
Who could make that up?
Blame the victim...
If Canada didn't want the Keystone Pipeline, they could live in peace...
The Liberal intellectuals BS factory is busy saying to Muslims, "See, it's not us socialist progressives. Why we hate Israel too. It's only those horrid conservatives who are at war with Islam."
Meanwhile the Islamic State is saying back, "Kill them all! You are all going to die for thinking a single liberal thought."
It's not "terrorists" -- it's Canadian terrorists. You don't really need a reason why Canada was exceptionally deserving of Islamists' wrath. Such an attack could just as easily have happened anywhere else in the West, and, in fact, has happened elsewhere (the "workplace violence" in the US, the beheader in the UK a couple years back). No Western country should think they're "safe" because they are nice to their Muslims.
Excuse No. 1,286
Every excuse under the sun (plus a few from far away galaxies) as to why islamists commit savage murder.
There is, and always have been, but 1 reason.
Still, it eludes liberals.
"If Canada didn't want the Keystone Pipeline, they could live in peace"
Ha ha ha! Exactly! After all, if Canada no longer gets its oil from the ME, then ....
Hmm.. I am trying to formulate a reason why this would piss the Jihadis off. I guess it pisses of the Saudis.
Why are liberals so much in favor of conflict oil anyways?
This kind of thing is not limited to "the West." It can - and does - happen anywhere.
This is the classic liberal HuffPost response to Islamic terror: not only blame the victim (Canada) but work in their political issues and lay the blame fully on Republicans. Did I miss Israel?
Some people buy into this.
I'm sensing a theme for today's posts. Interlopers?
And most importantly, Canada has been a strong ally in the war against ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
Never has the word "most" had so much work to do.
Editors at NRO need to develop reading comprehension.
Who knew that Glenn Greenwald was actually Kyle's Mom (from South Park)? LINK IS NSFW!
Canada had been drinking and wore a short skirt.
I think Arthur from Batman killed the Jihadi.
"There is, and always have been, but 1 reason."
Correct.
These Muslim terrorists happened to strike in Canada. As serious Muslims, of course they hated Canada.
But these were not attacks on "Canada."
See events in the London and Madrid subways, the streets of Amsterdam and Brussels, Minneapolis and Fort Hood, and so on.
"War on terror" was always a silly euphemism.
But a war it is.
Perhaps the Canadians will have the guts to start fighting for real.
Canada's SOF forces punched above their weight in A-Stan, along with the Brits and Aussie's. Some of the other NATO contingents were notable for their rigid ROE and FOBBIT behaviors.
PS: The Poles were very good...
Anyone see the Pittsburgh hockey game last night? Pittsburgh fans sang "O Canada" even though they were playing Philadelphia. In support of Ottawa. kind of moving actually.
Blame Canada! Blame Canada! The prophets of South Park rise again.
PS: The Poles were very good...
They were in Iraq too.
Canada has been very good to Islamic immigrants who bring money for over 30 years, but Canada also has been very pro-Israel, especially when compared to Obama's cabal of Muslim suck ups unleashing the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and Libya and spending six years condemning Israel for building housing in the Jewesh part of East Jerusalem.
The issue is always about what happens to Jerusalem.
This alliance between homosexuals and Islamic supremacists is very interesting. I believe the answer is rooted in standard Marxist critical theory.
Homosexuals have been conditioned to believe that they are an oppressed class. Thus, they identify with Muslims, because Muslims have convinced them that they, too, are the oppressed victims of Western cultural appropriation.
"PS: The Poles were very good...
They were in Iraq too."
You could take that back to Monte Cassino as well, if you cared to do so.
Tures' piece is OK as far as it goes, but it doesn't address the real question, which is why Canada is under attack from Canadians. Greenwald got one and only one thing right: a country at war should expect attacks upon its soldiers (just as it should expect to be the target of propaganda pieces like Greenwald's). But usually you expect the attacks, and the propaganda pieces, to come from the other side.
I suspect there is more mental illness at play here than 'terrorism'.
And if so...what can we do about that?
by the way, you should see the video of Keven Vickers, Sergeant of Arms for Canadian Parliament who killed the shooter, walking the halls with a gun in his hand.
Don't worry Canadians, President Obama will be along shortly (if you have a golf course) to explain why it was workplace violence.
Islam promises its male adherents absolute cultural privilege. It is a lot like the KKK in that matter.
You could take that back to Monte Cassino as well, if you cared to do so.
Or back to 1939. Courage under fire seems to be a cultural trait there. See also, Walensa, Lech.
This incident tells me two things.
1. The Canadians were incredibly lucky that this was not much worse. With just a little more thoughtful planning (and perhaps an accomplice or two) the killer could have been on the floor of the Canadian Parliament mowing people down by the scores.
2. The terrorist reach in North America is not very deep or strong yet. The Canadian Parliament was a very soft target, ripe for murderous exploitation. There are many similar targets in the United States and Canada. Yet the terrorists have lacked the ability to reach even these easy targets. The shooter was recruitable but seems to have been an incompetent lone wolf. So far that's all they have.
"So far."
im in vermont: "Islam promises its male adherents absolute cultural privilege. It is a lot like the KKK in that matter."
This is one reason why the left/dems are so protective of Islam and it's radical adherents.
The terrorists sense weakness, moral weakness, a lack of conviction.
"You could take that back to Monte Cassino as well, if you cared to do so."
I was just talking to a 95 year old guy who was at the battle of Monte Cassino. He still has strong opinions about the interference from the political types. He seemed to be pretty sure, despite what Wikipedia now says to the contrary, that the Germans were in the Abbey and that they were dominating the valley with artillery. It wasn't until the Abbey was bombed, according to him, that the Allies could make any progress.
I don't know, that is just what he said.
Also, if you mention the French, he is still steaming mad at De Gaulle.
"Homosexuals have been conditioned to believe that they are an oppressed class."
Yeah, one must admit that parents disowning their children who have come out as gay, and throwing them out of the house, or calling young (or not so young) gays names and ostracizing them from their peer group, or firing them from their jobs, discriminating against them in housing, assaulting them, even killing them, are all pretty good conditioning techniques to brainwash homosexuals into believing against all reason they are an oppressed class.
Oh, and let's not forget preventing them from marrying.
Jeebus! How could they get they idea they are not entitled to all social and civic rights as their straight peers?
My guess would be these were two lone wolves. When the first guy did his thing in Quebec, the second guy decided to act.
Is "oppression" another one of those words like "torture","rape", and "racism" that has been redefined in an attempt to attach the connotations of their original meaning to a new denotation concocted by lefties?
It's a rhetorical question. The answer is obviously yes.
So are conservatives "oppressed"?
Look how the national media chortles with glee as a conservative woman recounts being physically assaulted:
Wednesday afternoon, CNN anchor Carol Costello hyped newly released audio of Sarah Palin’s daughter Bristol tearfully recounting her being physically assaulted during a fight the family was involved in last month by saying it was “quite possibly the best minute and a half of audio we’ve ever come across.” She grinned during the entire setup.
The Palin's have been so trashed by the media that people feel entitled to assault them and then get cheered for doing it.
My guess would be these were two lone wolves. When the first guy did his thing in Quebec, the second guy decided to act.
If I remember right, both perps had tried to leave Canada to go join up with ISIS, but were denied departure. If that is true, might want to rethink how to handle someone who wants to leave the country to commit acts of terrorism instead of turning him loose in your own country.
Looking at some articles, it appears that the first guy had expressed the desire to join ISIS (as per his father reporting that this summer) and the second one had his passport taken away because he was considered a high risk traveler.
Sebastian - someone else said it, but I will repeat it, as a Canadian. Our soldiers fought, and died, in Afghanistan. Yes, our government chose not to supply troops in Iraq, in part because our military was already strained to its limits in its Afghani deployment.
Your comments are offensive and unwelcome in the immediate wake of a terrorist attack on our seat of government.
Alan -- the fact the two tried to join ISIS is not by itself indicative that they were working together. Lots Of people seem to be trying to join ISIS (three Colorado teenaged girls made it as fair as Frankfurt with no outside help).
I wonder if maybe we should let this guys join ISIS, get them away from us. Give then a one way ticket and tell them to have a bang up time.
"Yeah, one must admit that parents disowning their children who have come out as gay, and throwing them out of the house, or calling young (or not so young) gays names and ostracizing them from their peer group, or firing them from their jobs, discriminating against them in housing, assaulting them, even killing them, are all pretty good conditioning techniques to brainwash homosexuals into believing against all reason they are an oppressed class"
Naturally, this would encourage any gay man to make common cause with Islam.
My favorite scene in V for Vendetta is when the gay man is exclaiming over the beauty of his Koran. Lefties truly are dumber than dogshit.
I am trying to figure out the difference between a terrorist receiving a direct order in a packet from headquarters or acting on general orders broadcast in the media on their own initiative.
We still have a problem with ISIS, whether it fits into anybody's preconceived box of what problems are supposed to look like or not.
So good on 'em! (Canada) Does the Professor wish to suggest that any idiot willing to kill people should be given a heckler's veto over foreign and economic policy? If you are a mature person or nation you do what you think is right and you accept the consequences. And you defend yourself appropriately.
The violent get a veto over other people's plan to live in peace, yes.
Also, less citizens (read: NONE) walking around with a pistol that could make life exciting and short for someone bent on mayhem.
cop attacked by muslim in Queens with a hatchet.
The government still doesn't know WHY
Maybe it was the call from ISIS several days ago to engage in lone wolf attacks against soldiers, cops, etc.
