I am sick and tired of this weather.

There. I feel better.

In truth, though, I am always sick and tired of the cold weather in early/mid February, so this year is nothing special.

At least it's light late into the day now.

We were out in the dog park around 2:30 pm, and though it was only about 18° and I was cold a lot of the time, there was some sun warmth that felt different from winter.

Amazon has been selecting off-the-wall ads "just for me" recently "based on my recent viewing."

Refrigerator water filter?

The singularity is slipping away.

rhhardin said...

It's possible that recent off-the-wall ads count towards "viewing" since there's a tiny pic in the ad.

Off-the-wallness then feeds on itself.

This thing about women's ski jumping - isn't that rather sexist to have a separate class?
There is no consideration of body contact involved.

Duration of ice on Lake Monona (159 seasons)

We might be ice-fishing April in t-shirts this year.

The Great Lakes may completely freeze this year. Damn that global warming !

Dr. K,
Is there something to the comment on CBS this evening (by a woman doctor) that ski jumping is twice as hard on something in women's knees as in men's?

It does look like any consideration of style has gone by the boards in ski jumping, so what is left is just length, and if the women are strong enough to get beyond the "sweet spot" in the hill, the landings do get harder.

I have long been sceptical about the drive for women to play soccer. It is not for nothing we talk of "soccer knees," and soccer has got to be even harder on the women just because of the way their bones are angled.

Every year I think once we get to March we are home free. Sure we may get the occasional large snow storm, but it will melt fairly fast. At least, that's is my hope. This year may be different.

Not sure if our dear hostess covered it, but the Westminster Dog Show starts tomorrow. My spouse will be glued to the show. Always hopeful the Norwegian Elkhound comes through.

Did you know that there are tests to determine, with 99% accuracy, the gender of an unborn baby at 12 weeks?

Blood genetics test. Primarily for testing for markers of other things, like Downs Syndrome and such, in women over 35, but a side benefit is catching the chromosome of the baby.

Science is crazy!!!

It is Elghund which means "Moosehound" or "Moosedog."

Talking to a friend, today, who has visited the Apostle Island ice caves - she suggested skiing the four miles. Much more efficient, she's says. Also, she suggested the "Book the Bay" event - ski or snowshoe Chequamegon Bay from Ashland to Washburn, on Saturday. 10K. After dark.

Ah, the Sammy Smile. My Working dog friends say it's "Sam-yed" and not "Sam-oy-ed".

Just arrived in Lake Placid, with a stop in Saranac Lake to watch the fireworks opening the ice festival. Really nice ice palace this year.

Crisp, cold, not all that crowded, looking forward to some really good skiing. And the beautiful people are all elsewhere (thank you, Jesus!).

In the Northwest we had our February snow this weekend. There'll be buds on the trees in three weeks.

Got a nostalgic tear in my eye seeing the Sammies in the snow. I had Sammies for over 20 years while I lived in Alaska. A blast skiing with them, and what affectionate hounds...I had a couple of males, Bear and Nicki, we prob had 5000 miles backpacking in the Alaska mountains. they can work up to easily pack 25% of their body weight.

Going to get my guitar and play "For No One" that lovely baroque piece by the Beatles off Revolver. Nice look back tonight for the 50th anniversary.

Dunno. Did a quick literature search but one article said only 4% of the athletes studied were female. Something mentioned about "anorexia" and ski jumping but couldn't find more.

Oh Oh A big Hillary expose is in t works.

The full memo is one of many previously unpublished documents contained in the archive of one of Hillary Clinton’s best friends and advisers, documents that portray the former first lady, secretary of State, and potential 2016 presidential candidate as a strong, ambitious, and ruthless Democratic operative.

The papers of Diane Blair, a political science professor Hillary Clinton described as her “closest friend” before Blair’s death in 2000, record years of candid conversations with the Clintons on issues ranging from single-payer health care to Monica Lewinsky.

The archive includes correspondence, diaries, interviews, strategy memos, and contemporaneous accounts of conversations with the Clintons ranging from the mid-1970s to the turn of the millennium.

Opposition research by another Democrat ?

I think people should pay more attention to what Jane the Actuary said.

rcommal said...

And says.

rcommal said...

Also, I think people should assume less at the exact point at which they feel most self-righteous in assuming stuff about other people. Even if they don't like them.

I mean, who knows? It might be that people whose rhetoric you don't like are actually living their lives in the way you prescribe (while subsidizing you--both in terms of public and commercial ways) for many years.

Both types of you are lucky in that you get to be fed up.

Dorothy Rabinowitz weighs in on Woody Allen in the WSJ this morning. Nothing new beyond the claim that the world is filled with assholes who love child molestation charges.

Like everybody, without exception, writing on this entertainment choice in America, she expresses concern for the children, to fend off the charge that she's a child molestor.

This softens the "You are all assholes" message.

All last week it was, early morning this and early morning that. This week I am working in a time zone a few hours ahead and was counting on zero-dark-30 Althouse to come through. So this is the week she decides to sleep-in?

Here in Charlotte we've escaped the snowpocalypse, icepocalypse, and all the other pocalypses of the '13-'14 Killer Winter, but our luck might be about to run out. "Wintery mix" of ice and snow predicted for Tuesday night/Wednesday morning.

Yes, Charlotte -- or nearby -- might be positively buried this week.

Potential awesomeness in the weather! W00t!

Sorry. I was up, but the first post was a little long so I didn't break this thing open as early as I might have.
