Chicago Public Schools provides "safe passage" maps for school kids...

... to help them deal with new school assignments after the closing of 47 schools and to soothe parental worries about children crossing rival gang territories and vacant buildings and lots.
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said... “This is nothing new.... Kids have been crossing gang lines for years to go to school. We have a program in place that’s very clearly worked. We’re doing more of it this year based upon the school closings."...

Because so many schools closed this year, CPS added nearly $8 million to the program and is hiring an additional 600 people to escort students along designated safety routes....

"Safe Passage"???

Is this Chicago or Lebanon (and not the one in Oregon.)

We here in Texas are awash in guns yet amazed the liberal utopias have so much violence they must have this 'safe passage' thing for kids to go to school cross gang lines.

Maybe create an underground railroad for safe passage. I vaguely remember reading about it in my American history class. Not sure what it was about.

As a resident of Chicago, I wonder how much was spent on the thousands of "Safe Passage" signs that have been put up all over the city. Maybe we can sell Lake Michigan to cover the cost.

And that's true - kids HAVE been crossing gang lines for years in Chicago. But my guess would be that for years these things have been negotiated. Now there's a whole new set of gang lines the kids have to cross.

Me, I say call out the National Guard and have two Guardsmen on every corner these kids have to walk across. If a shot is fired by someone in the street, hunt them down like a dog. If a shot comes from a building send in a squad to clear it out and test every one in it for gunshot residue on their hands.

Seriously.

The saddest word in the quoted passage is rival.

RonF,

You've got the best idea here. And that's damned depressing. (Not that it's yours, obviously, but that calling out the National Guard to escort kids to school is the best remedy I can think of for the fix urban neighborhoods are in.)

Who is responsible for keeping the maps up to date? What happens if a child is assaulted or murdered while following the "safe" passages? Can the parents sue the Chicago Public Schools?

It's stories like this that make me understand why people from Chicago escape to Madison -- bringing their problems and their culture with them. Who would want to bring up kids in a hellhole like Chicago?

A lot of Madison's problems might be solved if Chicago would solve its problems.

Chicago schools are to warehouse kids and reward teachers, the foot soldiers of utterly corrupt politicians.

Suggestion: Give the kids each an iPad so they could waste their time at home without traversing a war zone twice a day.

At this point, not too many of us give a damn to the kids anyway. Their parents keep voting the same blood sucking politicians in. They may not deserve a lousy life, but their parents are complicit in making their lives miserable.

This is sad enough that I can't even snark. What level of failure does a city have to reach for this to be a thing?

Matthew @ 5:57 sums it up pretty well.

I don't know from the article if the $8 million for the program is specifically to hire the 600 new people. If so..

$8 million for 600 new people = about $13000 per person.

Assuming that each person works one hour on the way to school and 1 hour on the way home, that is about 10 hours per week.

Assume 40 weeks of school for 400 total hours per school year per individual.

$13000 for 400 hours of work = $32.50 per hour.

Not too shabby. If you don't get shot.

This is from The Belmont Club from 9/7/12, "Crime as a Disease":

...After all these years it turns out that some public health officials agree. Crime is a disease. They are sponsoring a Chicago NGO called Ceasefire. “CeaseFire uses a public health model to stop shootings and killings. We combine Science and Street Outreach to track where violence is heating up and then cool the situation down.”

In April – May 2012, the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences, convened a two-day workshop with more than two dozen professionals and experts in a broad range of fields to consider violence from a new perspective. While the theory has been a central part of CeaseFire’s thinking since inception, having leading experts in their respective fields apply the perspective to different manifestations of the same disease— self-directed, interpersonal, family, domestic, political and ethnic violence—was a truly momentous endorsement of the theory. CeaseFire’s bold vision that violence can be stopped if it is understood and treated in this way gained new ground from the historic event.

CeaseFire was named one of the “Top 100 Best NGOs” . Ranked first among violence prevention organizations worldwide...."

We weren't called "Beirut by the Lake" in the late 70s early 80s for Nuthin!

Jane Byrne moved into The Projects and violence went down, who would have thunk it?

Sad, sad, sad.

This has to be fixed from the inside out in the neighborhoods, by the people who live there. Hard to do when thugs rule the streets.

Time to treat the gangs like the Taliban.

Send every gang member to a concentration camp in the Alaska wilderness.

This is black on black violence?

Who cares?

HUD is going to fix this by moving them next door to us.

You have to provide escorts to children safely to your city's dwindling number of schools, and you say, "We have a program in place that’s very clearly worked."

Turn in your badge you incompetent hack.

Seeing Red, if we treat crime as a disease, then isn't gun control a prophylactic? And if crime is a disease, isn't aggressive public protest a disorder as well?

This administration doesn't want to let doctors do the jobs they're supposed to be doing. Should we make them judges and juries and block wardens instead?

I am now cynical and world weary enough that ever since I read this article is, I wonder:

"What would the reaction have been if a Conservative organization, or Republican politician, had expressed the idea of producing such maps, let alone actually distibute them?"

If your government is negotiating safe passage for school kids, you've definitely lost your monopoly of violence - and you'd better get it back. ASAP.
