This and similar sorts of things, such as parasitization of caterpillars by wasp larvae, helped convince Darwin that a benevolent god was not the guiding influence at the bottom of biology.

I can't work up much sympathy. Spiders are one of the only things worse than fungus.

Actually fungi like cordyceps are nature's way of keeping insects & arachnids in check.
