Since you've seen Nebraska and Colorado's state capitols, you should take a few hours one day and drive up to Cheyenne, Wyoming. That way you could make it three in one trip!
Our various state capitol building are extremely grand monuments to something or other, or perhaps just monuments to those kind and generous politicians who had them built. Still, we can now marvel at them or do we wonder why that ugly thing is still standing?
Well, at least these state capitols are not hanging gardens or burial mounds for past potentates and that's generally a good thing.
I could say something about the Nebraska designers feelings of inadequacy, but I won't, because he already feels inadequate.(that is assuming the designer was a man)
My wife and I used to travel around the southwest, and mid-west, on vacations. Very educational. I wish we could take the grandkids, but the price of gas, motels, and our fading health preclude it. And their parents can't afford to take them.
Can't blame them too much. Her side of the family has lived on the same property for over 200 years. To say they're homebodies is an understatement.
I did enjoy the angst I caused her parents though. I was not only Italian, but a Catholic to boot.(which was worse). Both were firsts for them-lol.
The phallic shape is often used in architecture and frequently include detail that is almost alarming. For example Bertram Goodhue's Nebraska State Capitol contains at it's tip Lee Lawrie's statue of the Sower or Seed Thrower. Since this is exactly the place where the male "seed" exits the phallus it is difficult to imagine that this relationship was unrecognized to the architect and sculptor.
The reason* why I mention this is that we have a precedent.. and a president ;)
So I believe I'm in safe ground.. I'm not bungee jumping here.
If you supposed that Obama keeps pushing on this recess appointment thing and he gets impeached over it.. (highly unlikely*) the comparisons to the historically fresh Clinton impeachment would be made.. but they would to be very careful as to not arise feelings of.. this is a very sensitive, touchy subject.. reminds me of a quote I read here the other day. by William James.. “The essential achievement of the will, in short, when it is most ‘voluntary,’ is to attend to a difficult object and hold it fast before the mind" (I even printed it to show it to people)
Were was I .. oh yea.. the presidential member.. the re republicans wouldn't have the stomach for it and Obama knows it.. and even if they did Obama would use it to fire up the base.
Its an efing win win for our president to trash the constitution.. I know I'm all over the place with my metaphores.. its a mess.. that brings me back to the little personal office next to the Oval Ofiice and the puerto rican guy that found the evidence.. the evidence that was lost on the OJ jurors.
Anderson Cooper calls it a showdown.. thats when republicans are right but that admission would lead people to conclude Obama is wrong and we cant have that.. specially in an election year.
Interesting choices of different styles. The forever flat place of Nebraska used a tall Egyptian obelisk style. But the place with Colorado elevations used a Greek Acropolis style on the hilltop.
I used to live 2 blocks from the Nebraska capital (aka the penis of the plains); it is an interesting building and story. They built the building during the depression, and built it while still in session and on pay as you go funding. If I remember correctly the governor’s mansion is across the street. Don’t forget that Nebraska is the nation’s only unicameral state legislature, and elections are non-partisan (or at least they used to be).
State pride makes me take this burden up...I don't think President Lincoln envied anything about our current Preside...Oh, you typed Omaha... my bad. Carry on you Dixie lovin' little marsupial.
@Lem
Nice catch on the quote about phallicies (yes I know what I typed, no grammer police please)and all. Bit prolific though. I think I might have column inch envy.
As for the basking sharks this is a fallacy.(as opposed to a phallicy). If you loook to either side of the "sharks" you see birds!. These are obviously flying fish, andnot basking sharks as some would have you believe,
And tell me if I am dreaming or not, but look at the rightmost bird. the large one. And the leftmost butterfly. Just what are they perching on?! Those ain't cornstalks. Why is there a fish called a perch? Why is there 2 Kansas Cities? Who added that "S" to Arkansaw recently? I refuse to do it! If Arkansaw was good enough for grandpa, it's good enough for me! What in the name of wide world of sports is going on here?!!

No, we're headed south.
No contest.
Well, I don't imagine you're heading as far south as Santa Fe, but perhaps you will surprise us.

So what are the truck stops like?

Obamas recess appointment fracas..
I don't know if a 'proper' name has been chosen.. snafu, brouhaha what?.. what things are called to minimize them and push'm under the rug.
I know.. another metaphor.
Why are thyere basking sharks on the ornamental gate?
It cant be a frakas.. a fracas is a noisy disturbance or quarrel.. the republicans are busy doing that with each other.
Lets see what they are calling it..
Republicans have been crying foul..
Anderson Cooper calls it a showdown.. thats when republicans are right but that admission would lead people to conclude Obama is wrong and we cant have that.. specially in an election year.
The LA Times says..
Republican-controlled House, using an obscure requirement in the Constitution..
Imagine that.. those republican hostage takers, using the constitution as a weapon.. as opposed to when democrats lead and pass Obamacare.
Link to LA Times editorial missing above..
Omaha looks like Joe Friday's badge.
PS If you're going down past Santa Fe, go past Albuquerque down at least to Socorro. The Rio Grande valley is beautiful this time of year.
"The Rio Grande valley is beautiful this time of year."
Suffice it to say, don't pick up any hitchhikers if you make it down there.
Photo of a bumper sticker I took this past week.
Bill Jacobson's Legalinsurrection website like to chronicle bumper stickers -
Needless to say when I saw this I had to share. Unbelievable.
The building refers to Lincoln's Omaha envy.
Interesting choices of different styles. The forever flat place of Nebraska used a tall Egyptian obelisk style. But the place with Colorado elevations used a Greek Acropolis style on the hilltop.
They are Temples to self government.
Nebraska's capitol looks like a prison.

And I don't even want to know what's steaming on the ground behind the sheep.
Have I matched Lems column yet?
(Damn! damn pills don't make it any bigger!)
"And tell me if I am dreaming or not, but look at the rightmost bird. the large one. And the leftmost butterfly. Just what are they perching on?!"
Exactly what I thought. It's not a question of whether the building is phallic. It's just: Where did they put the penis?
The top one looks like Nuremburg in 1935.
Its cool that you are out our way. Enjoy your trip.
Meanwhile, in southern Wisconsin...
