"I can’t say with certitude" ranks "somewhere below ‘no controlling legal authority’ and above ‘wide stance.'"

Said Chris Lehane, according to the Washington Post, which called him a Democratic "crisis-management specialist." (Cool job title.)

Lehane was comparing Anthony Weiner's statement about whether the notorious panties-pic depicts himself to "the infamous phrase that Vice President Al Gore used in 1997 to describe questionable fundraising activities, and then the one that then-Sen. Larry E. Craig (R-Idaho) used in 2007 to explain how he came to be arrested for lewd conduct after tapping the foot of an undercover officer in a restroom stall in the Minneapolis airport."

Ah, yes! It's a new entry in The Annals of Ineffective Denials.

"As her mother, I'm really upset," Mizuguchi told The Post. "I'm pissed off at that."

Representative Weiner has even lost Chris Matthews. "How many pictures of yourself like this do you have?" Jon Stewart knows things with "certitude".

First, don't do anything stupid. Second, when you do, admit it and take your lumps. Had he owned up to his stupidity he would still have his career ahead of him. But the denial is turning into a swamp.

"... he's a person of power and influence ..."

That's right mom ... he's a person of power and influence. And he's sexually stalking a student online.

This is Congressional Sexual Harassment of the first degree and last time I checked, internet stalking is a crime. And since this is interstate stalking, it's a federal offense.

Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner is getting away with his crimes only because the proper authorities refuse to properly investigate his specious claims of being hacked. They're turning a blind eye to his crimes because he is a powerful and influential member of the Democrat Party.

Well, mom ... I say more power to you. Put yourself in front of as many news cameras as you possibly can, because if you don't then this sexual predator will use his Congressional offices and our taxpayer dollars to make victim out of more innocent "fans."

Call Fox News mom. Give interviews to the New York Daily News. Call Rush Limbaugh's radio show today - I'll be they put you right on the air.

Do everything in your motherly power to spread your message of disgust at the willingness of the FBI to just look the other way whilst a member of Congress makes sport of your daughter's reputation.

You are her protector mom. Do your duty.

Get him, mom.

Get him. Before he strikes again.

That opens up a couple of questions:

1. has the Congressman previously made pictures and isn't sure this is one?
2. isn't sure if it has been altered?

You've got to love the "wide stance" reference. You've also got to love the fact that he claims to have hired a private security company rather than go to the Capitol Police or the FBI.

His handling of this whole situation has given it more legs than it probably deserves, but it couldn't have happened to a nicer, more amiable guy.

What's even more telling?

Huma's silence.

First rule of public relations sexual situation crisis management: be seen with your spouse at your side.

Has she been seen with Weiner AT ALL?

Has she even issued a perfunctory "I support my husband." statement?

NO and NO.

There's no doubt that Weiner's lawyer, if he's worth a dime, has been begging for something like this since the day he was hired.

That it's almost a week later with nary a peep from her tells you everything you need to know about whether or not Weiner's account was actually "hacked."

I think you're probably being unfair to the "idiot." My guess is that he is probably giving lots of solid crisis management advice which isn't being followed because: a) he refuses to admit guilt, b) Weiner's wife won't play along, or c) Weiner's is such a crass know-it-all jackass that he thinks he can handle it better than by simply following the professional advice he is being given.

I stand corrected. They WERE photographed together in the immediate aftermath.

I found the photograph: here.

I'm sure our blog hostess could have a field day interpreting the body language in that photo:

a) they're holding hands, yes. But they are pretty much as far apart physically as humanly possible.

b) that look on her face isn't exactly a supportive one.

And I would add that this was before a lot of the work was done online debunking Weiner's initial excuses and before his disastrous press conferences and follow-up interviews.

So yes they were seen together once, but not nearly in the "supportive spouse" setting that a crisis management professional would advise. But the performance hasn't been repeated, and a lot has happened since then.

"Mr. Wiener (heh heh) seems to think he can tap dance his way out of this."

Meanwhile, the innocent student victim of his crimes is left to twist in the wind while Rep. Weiner gets a hand job from Wolf Blitzer.

When is the press going to do its fucking job and demand a proper investigation of these sex crimes by a sitting U.S. Congressman? And if he's right, and he has been hacked, an investigation is especially warranted.

The man appears to be a sexual predator, making sport of innocent young female "fans" who follow him on his Twitter feed - some below the age of consent (that's right, there are others you haven't heard about yet).

He's uploading to insecure public servers obscenely lewd pictures using his taxpayer funded secure Congressional telecommunications equipment. THis is a blatant use of taxpayer-funded equipment provided to Mr. Weiner for official Congressional use ... not for conducting a private pussy hunt.

Not to mention that he's endangering national security by making himself the target of potential blackmailers.

Rep. Anthony Weiner has alleged a felony crime against him has occurred: the hacking of his computer system and official communications feed. Where the hell is the Federal Bureau of Investigations? Why are they refusing to properly investigate these allegations?

Do Republicans have to threaten to cut the budget of the FBI to get their attention to these matters?

Can anyone just take over the accounts of a sitting U.S. Congressman and get away with it without so much as a lifted finger by our nation's vaunted and over-budgeted security apparatus?

What is wrong with this country? Why does it appear that Democrat Party officials can get away with committing any crimes they want against us, the citizenry? Without having to worry about anyone making "a federal case" out of their actions?

It's sickening and we're fucking fed up with these lecherous bastards getting away with murder just because they are persons of power and influence.

Weiner has fallen into the same kind of traps that he and debbie Wasserman lay as snares for GOP entitlement reformers. Now go prove that you are innocent, Mr Weiner. A political Catch-22 has caught you, Mr Weiner.

Weiner sunk himself by getting combative with the press and looking guilty. Because most of us pick up on those cluse and take it as a credibility issue.

There is a remote chance he is a victim and just inept in dealing with this. But I seriously doubt it. The far more likely explaination is the obivous one: He accidently tweeted the image, is trying to mitigate this politically, and does not want to make things worse by getting the police and FBI involved because a false statement would be very serious.

That is not something I would like to explain to the world (and especially my wife) if it happened to me.

And if it was really a hack, I would be yelling that to the heavens and filing a police report.

That Weiner is not saying that or filing a police report tells you what this is about. As Freeman noted the other day: Weiner can't handle the truth.

"Weiner sunk himself by getting combative with the press and looking guilty."

I understand what you're saying here, Fred, but I would just remind everyone that Weiner sunk himself by taking an obscenely lewd photograph with his taxpayer-issued Blackberry telephone. And was this the only one? Think so?

Weiner sunk himself the moment he began spending time not being a Congressman but instead using Twitter as his personal Groupie Management System.

Weiner sunk himself by illegally using the wires we pay for to transmit obscenely lewd photographs to students across interstate lines ... which is a felony crime.

Weiner sunk himself by his own sick perverted actions.

The press are enabling this behavior in these lecherous Democrat Party Congressman by actively helping them to cover up their messes when they burst forth from under the waistband in sickening orgasms of lewd images and barely legal sexual predations.

Dana Bash and her producer at CNN are the only members of the press thusfar which have done any journalism in this matter. They asked tough questions and they are the only ones so far to have asked tough questions and all they got in response was canned pre-prepared bullshit talking points about fucking pies.

WTF?

Weiner has nobody to blame for this mess but himself because he's spending his time and our money organizing a harem of groupies for his dick flash parties instead of representing the constituents of the 9th Congressional district of New York.

It's sickening that the authorities we pay to prevent these sorts of crimes are instead deliberately looking the other way.

I say we cut their high-paying salaries and have another look at their overstuffed pension funds that, really, we can't afford to pay anyway. If we can't expect the FBI to do its fucking job, why should we continue paying these exorbitant salaries and benefits?

It's time to save ourselves some money and cut the FBI budget and stop funding their over-generous pensions.

We should all be ... the victim of a heinous crime is being ignored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation that we pay to investigate crimes.

Can we afford to give them the money, but get nothing in return? I think in these tight budgetary times and epic budget deficits that we can't afford to continue to do that.

Either Mr. Weiner is the innocent victim of a horrendous attempt to end his career by a hacker ... or the student he is sexually harassing and stalking is the innocent victim of a predatory member of Congress and has been left by the FBI to twist in the wind while her reputation is put asunder.

Either way ... the victim of a crime is not being treated fairly by the authorities we pay to conduct impartial criminal investigations in our country.

And if we can't expect the FBI to investigate crimes, then we should get to cutting their salaries, end their generous benefits and have another look at their horribly expensive and undeserved pensions.

We're under no legal obligation to continue to pay these pensions if we can't expect to get the service we pay for.

A horrible crime has been committed against a sitting United States Congressman (if we take him at his word). It demands official investigation.

Weiner's shifting alibi have caused him to lose one of his most ardent media supporters ... noted journalism critic and Democrat Party booster Howard Kurtz (formerly of the Washington Post).

Kurtz: "... After listening to Weiner bob and weave and talk about how photographs can be manipulated, and how he’s called in experts to determine whether that is or isn’t his junk, I have to say: he’s not acting very smart. The explanations seem increasingly bizarre. In the court of public opinion, at least, Weiner has forfeited the presumption of innocence.

That's a far cry from "this whole thing appears to be faked." That was Howard Kurtz's initial response to the Weiner reports. But since then, he's backtracked and now believes there's something to the Weiner allegations.

Kurtz has now come to believe, based on the shifting stories put out by Weiner and his bizarre media appearances, that the story may not only be true, but that it's not the end of the story.

Kurtz: "His continued insistence that some hacker had sent the photo is a bit more suspect in light of his non-denial denials of the other details. The Twitter exchange he had with a porn star sounds a little more incriminating."

In one of his interviews Weiner said that "the photo may have been taken out of context." Someone brief me (haha), on the variety of contexts there are for such pictures. He also used the small dick defense. He claimed that the package seemed more impressive than his own. Good one. He must be telling the truth. Only a rigidly honest man (haha) would admit to having an unimpressive package......Size like beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. Jon Stewart and Weiner claim that the package is enviable; commenters here claim that it is pitiable. I would defer to the opinion of Titus in this matter. He finds it worthy. My own opinion is that for a sitting Congressman, he wears cheap and uncomfortable underwear.....At any rate, "I can't say with certitude" is by no means the most asinine thing Weiner has said about the affair. They're not exactly covering for him, but the absurdity of his position deserves much sharper ridicule.

Anonymous said...

Kurtz goes on to suggest, in a thinly-veiled free-advice piece surely directed solely at Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner, that he should come clean ... or perhaps suffer the fate of John Edwards and see a federal indictment in his future.

Kurtz (on the one hand): "When Chris Lee, an upstate New York Republican, was caught sending a shirtless photo to a woman on Craigslist, he resigned his House seat within hours. ... Eliot Spitzer quit two days after the New York Times revealed that he was patronizing prostitutes. ... None of them mitigated the damage, but they spared themselves the tortured path of continued deceit.

Kurtz (on the other hand): A conspicuous exception was John Edwards, who denied both having an affair with his campaign videographer and fathering her child until he was busted on both counts by the National Enquirer. He now faces possible indictment for misuse of campaign funds.

Message: It can go easy, or it can go hard. Pick a road, Tony.

Kurtz: "Sending a young woman a lewd photo is not an impeachable offense, but it is monumentally bad judgment. Saying you’re not sure if that’s you in the gray underwear is unimpeachably stupid. Yes, the media are enjoying Weinergate a little too much. But the Congressman has no one to blame but himself."

I spent some time reading about Huma Abedin Weiner on Scroogle yesterday. The more I find out about her, the more questions I have.

In any event, I found this comment from Anthony Weiner to Wolf Blitzer interesting:

"Weiner said the episode has been particularly difficult for his new
wife, Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"I'm hoping my marriage survives the first anniversary," he told Blitzer."

If Weiner didn't do it, why would it be difficult for his marriage? Why would his marriage be in so much trouble that he could even raise the possiblity of it not lasting another 40 days? Even if he were joking.

Does Huma think he actually did send the pictures? Is she upset about them?

Or does she believe that he did not send the pics and is upset about the way he is handling it?

Or is she upset because this is drawing attention to her and may lead to some discomfitting questions being asked about who she is and why she is privy to top level stuff in the State Dept?

I hope someone asks for more elaboration.

I think Weiner is toast. He should just resign and get it over with. I suspect that he is gone by Friday evening.

I think Huma and her background may be a far more interesting story. Weiner is merely a congressman behaving badly. So what else is new?

Huma may have national security implications.

That would have got me off the jury for sure.

But they dumped me anyway.

You know, it's really not about underwear. It's about a sitting United States Congressman using the secure telecommunications equipment we provide for him as a Groupie Management System for his collection of internet skank.

This man has too much time on his hands and he's spending our money organizing his "fan club."

Don't we pay enough in taxes? Do we have to keep funding their pussy safari's.

The federal budget deficit is $1.5 trillion dollars and yet Mr. Weiner believes that it is OK to use his government-issued secure tephone to transmit across state lines obscenity to be used to entice young students.

We need to take a stand, folks. These people think they can tax us and tax us and tax us and get away with anything they want to.

It's time to draw a line in the sand. These lecherous Democrat Congressmen are using our own tax dollars to become sexual predators of our innocent daughters.

Are we going to allow that kind of behavior, as a country? As a citizenry? Or or we going to demand an end to these obscenities?

It's time to make a stand.

Did Breitbart take that picture of Anthony Weiner's penis with Anthony Weiner's own secure Homeland Security-issued telephone?

I think not, sir.

Mr. Weiner has been caught admitting that he cannot say with any certainty that this is NOT his penis in that photograph.

Now, how is that a Breitbart smear?

Mr. Weiner doesn't even deny that the photo was Tweeted. He claims his accounts were hacked. So, how is that a Breitbart smear?

Mr. Weiner has not even characterized it as a smear. He claims to be the victim of a crime ... not a smear campaign.

You need to find a better spin, guy, because even Anthony Weiner has said this is not a smear campaign. He's said it is a crime that has been committed against him, a sitting U.S. Congressman.

Bruce Hayden said...

I think that Weiner's "I can't say with certitude" is an admission that it is, indeed, a photo of him in his underwear, and if not, at least an admission that he has in the past taken that sort of photo of himself and uploaded it to a public site.

His problem there with this quasi admission is that the only person who really could have taken that photo was him, unless he had someone leaning over his shoulder while he was in a state of partial undress. The angle is just wrong for anything else.

Most of us here can state with certitude that this isn't a picture of us for the simple reason that we haven't taken such a picture of ourselves and, even if we had, then uploaded it to a site such as twitter, etc. (Even ignoring type of underwear, etc.)

So, the certitude argument essentially is an admission that he has taken such a picture and has uploaded it. And, if he uploaded it at some point in the past, he most likely sent it to someone, and that person was most likely of the female persuasion (no evidence, at least yet, that he might be interested in the opposite persuasion).

That is what we know, at least to a fairly good extent, given his admissions.

That said, it is possible that he did get hacked, that the person hacking his system found the photo, and then sent it, or made like sending this, to that young lady.

Why might he have uploaded that picture? Keep in mind that he was a "player" until recently, when he finally wed. He may have sent it to his prospective bride, or maybe to another woman he was conversing with back then.

It will be interesting to see what ultimately happens and happened here.

Why might this still be somewhat innocent, on the part of Weiner showing his wiener? (Assuming that he did get hacked)

This is the sort of thing that some aspiring players might do. But he may have actually done it in the past, before he was married. That would have been just bad taste, and little more. Maybe a woman sent a photo of herself, at least partially unclothed, and this was his response. That woman might even have been his bride to be.

The reason that I am throwing these hypotheticals around is that the guy just seems too smart to be screwing up so badly, unless there is at least a little flame with all the smoke. But this partial admission just doesn't go with a stonewall defense either. So, I am suggesting that maybe his problem is more the embarrassment of the photo itself, and not that it was sent to that woman, which seems to be what he is mostly denying. Or, to rephrase, he may be embarrassed that he uploaded the photo at some point in the past, but wasn't the one who sent it to that woman.

Of course, he could just be a run of the mill creeper or perv instead. I am just trying to see where giving him the benefit of the doubt might go.

Oh, I could take a guess, but among the hundreds of wiener pictures that are in my gallery, as it surely must be for Rep. Then you would be able to prove it, which you can't. Yesterday it was demonstrated it was relatively easy to post a pic on someone's yfrog acct, without even hacking into it. Today, yfrog disabled that feature. If that happened to Weiner, the butthurt here will be epic.

Anonymous said...

"How?"

yfrog logs the IP address of the device which uploads content to its servers. Twitter also logs the IP address of the device that a user uses to originate a given Tweet. Finally, Mr. Weiner's ISP assigned an IP address to his secure home network router, which is located inside his home. At the time of the Tweet in question, Mr. Weiner was at home alone, by his own admission.

Mr. Weiner sent the Tweet and Mr. Weiner uploaded the photo to yfrog and he is lying about his system being hacked because he is naturally embarrassed at being caught sending obscenely lewd photos of his penis to someone who is not his wife.

Scott M said...

Why Vitter? He admitted to frequenting prostitutes in DC. Caught dead to rights when his number was found in the madam's client list. He denied the Louisiana madam's claim and it could not be verified by phone records.

Vitter didn't deny the DC end, Didn't try to blame someone else. Didn't try to claim it was a setup. Didn't try to downplay it. He stood up with his wife, admitted that he'd been an a$$hole and apologized etc. This was some years back. Since that time Vitter has moved up and been elected to the Senate.

Doesn't compare to Weiner. Weiner won't admit to it, clear the public air, and make it a matter between he and his wife. He'll deny, obfuscate, and lie just like Billy with the Wandering Willy did.

Garage gives me this CBS cite:

"D.C. Madam" Called Vitter During Votes"

Note - this is an article on the DC madam end of things that Vitter did not deny, not the Louisiana end.

The very first line of the article garage used to try to prove...I don't know, something...says:

"A woman accused of running a Washington prostitution ring placed five phone calls to David Vitter while he was a House member, including two while roll call votes were under way..."

So...it was not 'technically' 4 calls to Vitter while he was on the house floor. It was 2 calls while the house roll was being called.

Like I said.

'I think the general topic is sexual congress.'

Generally, yes. (Nice play on words too). But the real issue here is not whether or not Weiner was attracted to a coed and sent her a photo of his junk. Nor is it really about his poor judgement using social media to do so (rather than a direct email).

We've seen a couple of flat earthers here trying to deny that end of things, then accusing the posters here of being obsessed with what should be a private matter. Then the latest garage attempt to obfuscate with an example of a republican who couldn't keep it in his pants.

None of that is key here. What is key, as I see it anyway, is Weiner's expectation that he can deny and lie and not be held accountable for that because he's a democrat and not 'ordinary people' (his term). That his craven inability to admit to what he did should be accepted at face value because he's too important to be distracted by the implications.

It's about the this fool's hypocrisy and lying in lieu of manning up, or should be.

Chip S. said...

While it's true that Weiner just keeps looking worse every time he speaks about this, I've wondered about just what it is that's really driving this controversy. What is it, exactly, that has driven him to lie so baldly and badly?

For me, it comes down to the fact that it's just so juvenile for a politico with this guy's aspirations to be sexting at all. It's like he's overcompensating for having been a dweeb in high school. If he had been caught having an actual affair with a grown-up, I think he could have survived easily by just 'fessing up. But I think he was instinctively and totally embarrassed by this, and reacted in accordance with that.

YMMV.

Presumably he started out wanting to save his marriage and his career.

To the contrary, I wouldn't let my children use it because it means "Good God, I can't believe you are so incredibly stupid.", which means it is too rude to use in polite conversation.

One tag is "lying," but I have started to have this odd feeling based upon reading the various stories and watching the various videos that Rep Wiener, while being far from forthcoming, has not lied about this story.

Do a thought experiment. Assume that everything he has said is not the entire truth, and may be intended to mislead, but is in the Clintonian sense at least, the truth.

If that is the case, then what has happened? His account was hacked. The photo was indeed of Mr. Wiener. The hacker most likely found a photo of the distinguished member of congress and forwarded to a young lady the hacker had observed flirting across twitter with the Representative. Wiener couldn't go the the police or FBI, because that would risk revealing he has these photos and has possibly sent them to women previously. Thus, "hack" is downgraded to "prank" - not because they were both lies, but because they were different ways of shading the truth.

The photo was never sent directly to the girl in Seattle. It was posted to YFrog, which in turn in was placed into @repweiner's twitter feed.

The hacker would need to know Weiner's private YFrog email address to upload any photo to his account and bypass normal login procedures.

Also, shouldn't the EXIF data (metadata) in the file tell us exactly when the picture was taken?

As I predicted earlier in this thread, the other shoe has now dropped.

Internal sources close to the Democrat Rep. Anthony Weiner now say he now admits to a pattern and practice of sending lewd pictures of his penis to young girls.

These sources are thus far refusing to comment for the record, or allow their names to be used ... but they are characterized as having spoken with the Democrat privately.
Weiner has admitted to these friendly sources close to him, they say, that he has in the past sent these types of lewd pictures to young girls.

Politico: "Two people who spoke to him privately said he had suggested that, as one said, “he took or sent a photo or photos like this at some point — but in this case actually was hacked/set up, perhaps with a posting of one of his own photos or something very similar.”

Weiner is bizarrly still maintaining that this time - this time - he really was hacked and somebody got his photo and sent it to that young student in Seattle.

But he is now admitting (possibly because people are currently in negotiations to provide the press with other photos Weiner has sent to young girls) that he has a history, a practice and pattern, of sending lewd photographs of his penis to young girls on the internet using his Twitter and yfrog accounts.

Weiner continues to let his wife - Huma Abedin - twist in the wind.

Politico: "Friends said Weiner may also be personally torn about how to proceed. Though he’s a very public figure, he’s also a very private person and, despite a reputation as a ladies’ man, rarely shared details of his personal life with staff or reporters before his wedding last summer. His wife Huma Abedin, meanwhile, is intensely private and a veteran keeper of Clinton secrets, an unquestionably loyal aide who has been in the room during countless confidential meetings."

Rep. Weiner has a problem. He is a flasher. He likes to show his penis to young girls. He has done it more than once and has now been caught doing it.

He should resign and if he refuses to resign, then the House of Representatives should call itself into session and expel this man from the House of Representatives.
