jamboree said...: She's still benefitting because she was able to place herself on a better trajectory at a younger age when the compounding interest payoffs are much higher. ($$$ from supermodel career, marriage - although I see her peculiar marital choice mostly in terms of inexperience. ;-) )

Would she even get some cheap text space in HuffPo over some more intelligent political science or journalism major of equal age with a scintillating intellect?

All you have to do is look at Obama to know that even with guys, it's beauty/image over brains in today's world. And no, I don't buy the "conventional wisdom" that he's brilliant. Nor Al Gore. Bill Clinton, I'll give you. He showed every evidence of being able to think quickly, broadly with originality on-the-fly and not only that, but quite often illuminate and simplify at the same time. Good for him.

The mind also decays. Physics majors, SV geeks, all are under tremendous pressure to set the work on fire before 35 because the synapses stop firing as quickly and you have to start leveraging your intelligence with position and wisdom - just like an older supermodel.; 10/23/10, 10:21 PM

Robert Cook said...: Beyond being Rick Ocasek's wife, in her youth she was a famous model, as ubiquitous in fashion ads and on magazine covers as Kate Moss has been in more recent years. (I don't know who today's equivalent would be.)

The financial earthquake shaking up all people and especially age 60 plus people makes a semi-youthful appearance a tool for job survival. The really old look is not favored. Where it really bites is the deterioration of athletic skills and the loss of fitness.....I wonder who feels the greatest pain about the erosions of time: the fat, bald guy who ruled the diamond for a few seasons or the supermodel with crows' feet.; 10/24/10, 7:42 PM
