$750 pink leather shorts.

= what Senator Scott Brown wore on his first date with the woman he went on to marry.

This confirms he is a Dem! :)

Does Brown fall under some "hot guy" exception to Althouse's general rule against MIS?

Damn that was a short honeymoon.

Garage;

Man wearing pink shorts, honeymoon? What are you suggesting about a rugged Republican? Heh.

It was the 80's.

From the article:
“We’re in the famous truck,” he pointed out, needlessly. “It’s a regular truck.” Yes and no. As Arianna, the younger of his two daughters, told me, he originally purchased it not so he could haul lumber but so he could attach it to a trailer bearing her horse.

How does using the truck to haul horse stuff make it not a regular truck?

No.

He's a lumberjack and he's OK.

I said it from the start:

This guy fulfilled his purpose, by blocking ObamaCare Part I, otherwise he's a useless embarrassment.

The image Brown gave y'all before, with the pick-up truck, etc. - and y'all will fall for any unexamined political image these days - was really him alright, faking The Macho Response.

BTW, I've got 152, 569 miles on mine,...

Brown votes with Dems, wears pink shorts next day.

At least he's not frugal, like a certain governor from South Carolina.

Typical NYT Magazine semi-smear piece. It's replete with loaded language -- practically every sentence twists everything ever-so-slightly askew so that you come away thinking that Scott Brown is an idiot.

They can't bust him for being a moron or a quitter the way they do Sarah Palin, so they'll mock him for being a model. But he was a model for over 10 years, and he paid for his college and law school (and probably his houses, too) that way. Who's going to begrudge the guy? I certainly won't.

Strictly on demographics, Scott Brown should've amounted to nothing. The fact that he's now a Senator is only to his credit.

Garage -- check your timing, there. Brown wore those shorts decades ago, but the NYTMag thinks it's worthwhile to bring it up now. (Wonder what they said about Obama's panama hat?)

And Crack -- lay off the sweeping generalizations. I didn't donate to Scott Brown's campaign because he drives a truck.

My response was a little needle to the author of this post, not the NYT.

What astounds me is that the article goes on for six pages.

I didn't get past the second line.

Henry said...

I read about one page. It was incredibly dull, a reporter's game of I Spy Trivia. Is that a teeth-whitener discard on the dashboard of the real truck? I'll put that in the story. What about this wax I found in my ear while riding in the real truck? I'll put that in the story too.

In the one page I read Brown came across as incredibly good natured, not least because he was putting up with the idiot reporter.

Funny how much reporters hate models. Narcissists don't like competition.

Scott is a risk taker. He will do something difficult that no one expects from him and try to pull it off. He is a Smokey and the Bandit type show off from Massachusetts. I suggest that the GOP needs to get out of his way and watch.

Anonymous said...

The reason being used to pull a horse trailer makes a truck not a regular truck is that in Massachusetts a "regular truck" is one that's never used to haul anything at all.

I think this is the only time I'd agree with the Professor about shorts...

Joe said...

really I am tired of Scott Brown, his truck, his duaghters, his shorts...everything. I'm glad a Republican took Ted kennedy's seat, but he's one of 100 Senators, and one of 535 members of Congress and one of 545 very powerful people in DC. Enough already, I don't care to know more about him, just how he's voting and why......

Harsh Pencil said...

I read the whole article. If the author's point was to make think less of Senator Brown, it failed miserably. The Senator came across as a good guy.

Joe said...

(The other Joe)

I thought he said it was "like $750 shorts back then."

I'm gathering he is adjusting for inflation and using a number relative to his income.

Like Joe above, I'm tired of the guy. Yes, I'm glad he's republican, but he's still just another politician (and has already proven as much.)

It is impossible to judge the matter without a photograph of Brown in these shorts.

I mean, were they cotton-candy pink shorts? Rose tan shorts? Magenta shorts? Knee-length, or short-shorts? I don't think even Senator Hottie McAwesome could redeem bright cotton-candy-pink short-shorts, 80s or not... but I am willing to be persuaded.

If he was wearing them because he'd been modeling them, there must be a photograph somewhere. What's the matter with the Times? Can't do a little investigative reporting?

Don't see a lot of talk out there today on the vote by Scott Brown that changes everything.

Anonymous said...

That's because it doesn't change anything, Garage.

TosaGuy said...

I wish more local interest was spent on Russ and Herb...their policies and votes, not their wardrobe choices.

Brown meant something to everyone because of the consequences of his election. But now he is 1 of 100 and we should all focus our scrutiny on our own senators.

Automatic_Wing said...

Do tell, garage. What did Scott Brown do to change everything?

garage mahal said...

The Brown election changed everything. How he votes is irrelevant.

Liberal media myth #483,271

Ah. See in Arkansas, a truck would only get made fun of if it was not functional, so "ability to haul trailers" (or boats!) is right at the top of the list of a what a "real" truck should do.

I also did not get past page 1. What terrible writing. That reporter needs an editor stat.

Brown election = historic stinging rebuke of Obama and his policies.

Brown voting with Obama the first chance he got = crickets.

He wants to get reelected, so he voted for this bill. You would think that would get a little ink compared to the righteous cacophony of him simply winning a seat.

Fair point. But isn't it the dinky one, that's only $15 billion or something? That's peanuts, in a time when we're talking about a health care bill earlier versions of which were projected to cost in excess of $1.2 trillion.

That said, that's not why I'm responding. I'm responding because the first thing that came into my head, apropos of $750 pink leather shorts, was shoubu pantsu!.

Ah~. Japan has rotted out my brain.

Automatic_Wing said...

Garage, did you expect Scott Brown to vote with the Republicans on every single piece of legislation?

You're quite the pessimist! With expectations that low, you'll never be disappointed.

You're right. It looks like "the party of no" meme is out the window. I guess Barry will have to think up a new excuse for his health care debacle.

garage mahal said...

Garage, did you expect Scott Brown to vote with the Republicans on every single piece of legislation?

That's my whole point. That entire episode was supposedly a huge rebuke to Obama and what he wanted to accomplish. He was the No to Obama. Brown then bucks his own party and votes with the Dems and Obama the first chance he got. I just wish you knew how good you have it with the media. You can't lose being a Republican.

Balfegor said...

Well that's obviously not true. The first chance he had was the Craig Becker nomination. Would have been costless (for Republicans) too, given that so many Democrats crossed over to vote against the President's nominee.

How people keep forgetting that, in this age of groupthink, and "The One" and all, surprises me. It should never be forgotten. Our job is to look out for us - not to protect him - because, as he's already shown, he'll do anything.

garage,

I can't speak for everyone, but I think you're making a common mistake in assuming so many on the right are very pro-Republican. An awful lot of conservatives nowadays would rather have an independent than a party-line person; someone who demonstrates that they're actually thinking, and not just making knee-jerk votes.

As far as conservatives being knee-jerk anti-Obama ... well, that's probably accurate. But that's because, face it, Obama is a mess and is spending us into oblivion.

There weren't any sequins. Pink shorts are ok, but if they are adorned with sequins in the crotch area, that sends the wrong message, especially for a real estate attorney.

OK I lived through the 80's and remember most of it.....they were after the 60-70's which are still pretty hazy in my mind, but I sure don't recall it remotely being sexy for a man to wear pink leather shorts with white shoes.

No way no how.

Unknown said...

Any man with guts enough to wear pink leather anything, if he doesn't like other guys, is probably a better man than you or I, Gunga Din.

Also, don't beat up on garage too much. He has to cling at all the straws he can. After all, Brown is the vote that kills BarryCare.

And garage was soo counting on it.

"He has to cling at all the straws he can."

Bitterly, even.

Brown is going to vote Democrat "when it is best for Massachusetts". Nationalised health care was going to screw Massachusetts which had already fixed insuring pre-existing folks locally. Surprise, surprise. He is still better than the Thug Democrats that block vote to enact Barak's Socialism every day of the week in exchange for mega-millions in deals.

With just one word you made me laugh out loud.

Another example of Coakley's failed campaign -- who in the hell did her oposition research ? there should have been no way for this guy to paint himself as 'everyman' just driving his pick up truck ! I read today that he bought that truck to tow his daughter's HORSE and HORSEBACK-RIDING EQUIPMENT !

Fred4Pres said...

Would he have gotten a second date with Ms. Althouse if he showed up wearing shorts?

Fred4Pres said...

I am guessing Ann would have given him a mulligan on the shorts, provided he lost them right away.

This is hypothetical and pre-Meade

This was a sacrifice bunt. Shrewd strategy for him and for the party. I suspect he voted for this rather trivial jobs bill with the quiet blessing of the Senate GOP leadership.

He will do enough of these to get re-elected but I think he can be counted on to derail most of the really poisonous parts of the Obama agenda.
