Avril Lavigne/Katy Perry.

What a contrast! Tonight on "American Idol." 2 guest judges, as the show did the first round auditions in L.A.

First half hour: Avril Lavigne bundled up in a hooded, fleecy jacket while the contestants and the other judges all visibly sweated. Kara DioGuardi was completely bare-armed and bare-shouldered, yet sweating. What was the temperature in there? I had to conclude they had the heat turned up for Avril Lavigne. What was her problem? She also didn't seem to fathom the project of judging the contestants. She idiotically doubted whether a guy who was a pastor could do the competition and still be true to his religion. Hey, judge the singing. Don't nose into their personal lives, or I'll nose into yours. Why were you so cold while everyone else was hot? And yes, her jacket had devil horns. Pure distraction. The important thing was that she was bundled up while the others were sweating. On camera. How did she get the power to make all of them look so bad? They couldn't have liked that.

Second half hour: Katy Perry! She's dazzling in a tight red dress with perfectly pink lipstick and rouge. And even in that getup, she doesn't seem phony at all. She's completely alert. How refreshing to see wide open eyes! And she chides Kara for falling for the soap opera aspects of a guy who grew up in foster care. This is about whether they can sing. Exactly. And when Kara tried to co-opt her into a "girl power" hug, Perry resisted. We're looking for real singing talent. Cool. Beautiful. Smart. Sharp. Great.

No contest: Katy Perry knocks out Avril Lavigne.

Remember when Avril shoved Kelly?

Katy Perry is being fouled by that piece of human shoe leather, Russell Brand. This must stop immediately!!! Anyway, Katy Perry is actually a quite talented woman. She's also very easy on the eyes. Very. Easy.

I was really hoping you'd do some Idol blogging.

I'm still watching. I'm just out of the habit of describing everything. And I miss Paula.

I miss Paula too. She is a talented and loving person.

Katy Perry made me feel dirty.

I'm sad I missed Idol today, but I had to do work on my class. I've heard there is something called TiVo that lets you shift the time you watch things. Maybe I should get one, but I know I wouldn't find time to watch recorded things either.

And the site I watched Idol on last year is a lot more complex now. Surveys, etc., just so I can watch. Not yet ready for that.

Glenn Gould used to wear a hat, scarf, gloves and a winter coat in the middle of summer. He kept his apartment at a year-round temperature of 80-90ยบ F and insisted that the recording studios where he worked were kept at the same temperature with absolutely no drafts of any kind.

But, then, he was an absolute genius. Whoever Avril Lavigne is, not so much I'm sure. And Glenn would never have appeared as a judge on American Idol either. He hated competitions of any kind.

So he was a homeless guy?

The professor doesn't remember the angst the Christian world felt when Amy Grant switched from Christian music to secular pop. The dividing line between the Lord's music (gospel) and the devil's (blues) was just as sharp -- but Georgia Tom (Dorsey) went the other way, from sinner to saint.

Speaking of Amy Grant...

Years ago, I had a friend who was a big fan of Christian "rock," and specifically of Amy Grant after having become extremely religious at some point following graduation.

We got into a huge fight when I told him that his favorite Christian artists would jump to Top 40 music in a heartbeat if a recording contract were dangled in front of them, and that they were still performing strictly Christian music because they hadn't yet gotten the call to "go to the show." He was incensed at the suggestion, and we began drifting apart after that.

And then a few years later his all-time favorite, Amy Grant, got a recording contract and went Top 40...I didn't have the heart to call him up to rub his nose in it.

[Note: This is not disparage either Amy Grant or Christian music. Just a note about human nature, and the lure of the ridiculous amounts of money record companies throw at "the talent"....]

Christian artists get divorced and remarried!

(Amy Grant)

Some of them even stay in Christian music after divorcing their Christian spouses and marrying some new Christian.

The Kara Katy dynamic was interesting and not to Kara's advantage. Katy was composed, bright eyed and objective in her judging amd, in contrast, Kara seemed sloppy, desperate, and old.

Katy's non-Goth-influenced retro 40s pinup look is refreshing -- and surprisingly sexy in a non slutty way.

It *is * disturbing, who she's dating. Ugh.

Avril is either:
A) nutty
or genuinely cold from
B) anorexia
C) drug abuse
or, most likely
D) all of the above

Lavigne's Canadian. I would think she is used to the cold.

I like Katy, and she looked great as a judge. And yes in comparison Kara looked out of her league.

As for Avril, she's always been odd in some way but I've never thought bad of her. She wrote Breakaway for Kelly, I don't know how that relates to the "push", prior to of after.

Avril behaved like a complete idiot throughout. Nothing about her said either "punk" or "rock". She needs to chill out.

She dissed a girl and I liked it.

Bring back Paula!

The whole guest judge this is pointless. For pure entertainment, get someone even more acerbic than Cowel. Or just spare us the auditions, which just get tedious after the first two episodes.

Sadly, I didn't see it.
