"Why couldn't President Obama have put on more of a show for his British guests?"

"He looked like he simply couldn't be bothered."

ADDED: Telegraph blogger James Delingpole writes:
My favourite theory so far ... was that it was a move calculated to please his Lady Macbeth. At the moment in Britain, we're still in the "Doesn't she look fabulous in a designer frock" stage of understanding of Michelle Obama. Gradually, though, we'll begin to realise that she is every bit the terrifying executive's wife that Hillary Clinton was. Or, shudder, Cherie Blair.

We may just LURVE Michelle's fashion sense. But Michelle doesn't reciprocate our affection, one bit. Her broad-brush view of history associates Brits with the wicked white global hegemony responsible for the slave trade....

Now, there's some loose talk. There's no reason to blame Michelle. This is pure racial fantasizing. Quite bizarre. But Obama should be setting off positive fantasies around the world. That's what he said he'd do. That's what those of us who voted for him believed he would do. Come on! Where's the magic?

I did hear Obama made time to catch a B-ball game and put back a beer. Perhaps if PM Brown could shoot hoops, Obama might have played Around-the-World with him.

Of course he couldn't be bothered. The UK is our ally. It is so GWB to actually pay attention and show loyalty to our allies. This is the new era of smart diplomacy where we ignor the UK and publicly offer to sell out Eastern Europe to the Russians in return for help against Iran. As they say, can anyone here play this game?

Beta Conservative said...

So, he's been in office less than two months, and he's been disrespectful to our most important ally, and hung out The Czecks and Poles to dry by using missile defense as a bargaining chip.

The Russian rejection of his Iranian overtures was more embarassing than the Brown visit.

He seems like a community organizer playing in the big leagues and getting it about as wrong as is possible.

I hope his instincts and savvy become more refined with time.

A bit off topic, nonetheless..

Met a business woman yesterday. Well-educated, informed, etc.

Asked her what she thought the economy was going to do in the next year or so.

Far-away look came in her eyes.

"I think there's going to be a...a...a...."

It was like she was frozen.

"...a revolt," she finally said, and she added, "I'm a good Democrat. I voted for Obama, but now...I don't know."

She went on to say that she'd lost half of her retirement savings and thought she would never earn them back.

Churchill provided hope. So did FDR. Folks are not getting that from the new guy.

He's only hurting the country if you think communism is bad.

The UK must not be treated respectfully. They may be socialist, but they refused to accept the Euro as their currency, thus they aren't really fully committed to the communist dreams and must be punished.

ahh crap... i got divorced and lost lots. who cares?

I mean the new generation. We should let them steer the ship and have the work, not us older americans. And stop the dang worries of retirement. Have you no hope that your children will take care of you if you have no money? And not the government? I mean how many moms went to work just to put that money in the bank so all these kids would have the money to be educated and have wonderful careers. Won't the kids return the favor?

Obama writes in one of his many autobiographies that his adult grandfather was treated like a "boy" by the British colonials in Kenya.

Who knows if his rejection of the symbol of Britishness was a conscious or unconscious pay back for the humiliation of his African grandfather.

Obama has ALWAYS been obsessed with race and power even as his White followers have pretended that he represents a "post Racial" world.

The strategy is to Get the Power and then you can do whatever the hell you want. Since Wall Street and Business are The Enemy, you go after them.

@garage, no sane person believes that the recession started with Obama's inauguration -- that's a straw man of your own creation. And you only make yourself look like an idiot for setting it up.

A recession has a formal, technical definition and by that definition the recession started in the first quarter of 2008. But until last December it wasn't really all that deep in historic terms. In the 40 days (it only feels like 40 years) Barack Obama has been in office he has done everything possible to make the recession deeper and nastier. The only debate is whether he has done this because he is ignorant and inexperienced, or because he is actually malicious. I hope it's the former, but I'm starting to fear that it's the latter.

Getting back to the point of Professor Althouse's post, Barack Obama has been described as uninterested in foreign policy. Pity. Because the rest of the world still exists whether he likes it or not, and as President of the United States it's in his job description to deal with it. I was a teenager when JFK took office, and among all the presidents I have seen -- including Gerald Ford being thrust into an office he never campaigned for -- I'd have to rank Barack Obama as being worst by a huge margin.

My own theory about Obama's treatment of Britain and Brown has much less to do with Obama's Kenyan heritage or the history of the slave trade. It's mostly much simpler and direct than that. Because the Brits stood resolutely by GWB from 9/11 all the way through the invasion of Iraq and beyond, and GWB talked up the "special relationship," Obama is ostentatiously breaking from that and otherwise making them pay.

As for the economy, Obama has plenty of time for it to recover all on its own. And he'll get the credit for it and be lionized as a genius in the media when it does. That's prolly what he's counting on too.

Monty gets a pretty bad rap but you have to understand a few things. First, Monty, unlike Ike, fought in WW1 where he first hand witnessed the slaughter of the cream of the British army. Naturally he was a cautious commander with that experience. Second, Britian, unlike the USA, had a very finite number of men available for conscription which keep in mind, were strung across the globe fighting the Japs as well.

But their troops fought very well, lots of them died, and they didn't give up. If the brits hadn't held out alone in 1940, Hitler might well have beat Russia, and then the nazis would still be there. Give the respect.

Most German commanders didn't relish going up against British soldiers and had a large amount of respect for thier fighting abilities. To paraphrase one German general whose name I can't recall immediately, "We respected the British fighting spirit, feared the Russian fanaticism and were terrified of American artillery."

I really cannot believe he dissed Brown sooooo badly.

What I'm thinking is that Obama dissed the British PRESS more than he dissed Brown. And it may be the bigger mistake to have made.

The criticisms I've read hinge on such things as him saying that Britain is "one" of our most valuable allies, instead of an unequivocal "our most valuable ally." That's sort of thin. (And I'm still holding out hope that the helicopters were the deluxe limited edition models.)

In any case, this ought not be NEWS to anyone that Obama has a sort of tin ear. While he was planning to become president and CiC he alienated and insulted our military (a cultural misstep) and offended Pahkistahn by declaring that he'd violate that country's borders (failing to recognize the necessity of deniability for the rulers of that nation) and announced that he'd just up and talk to anyone, which had to be interpreted as a statement of weakness or capitulation. But those voting for him loved it. The result is that he *bought* a situation where he's got no cards to play with Russia, no leverage, because he already announced that he doesn't support any of the things that he might have used to trade with them (meaning he insulted Poland for no gain), we lost air access to Afghanistan (his "good" war) from a K-stan base and now must rely even more on the offended Pakistani government to maintain access and resupply. And now he failed to make Britain feel special enough.

But the Democrats aren't really *supposed* to be that good at foreign policy, right? Their strength is supposed to be Domestic policy.

And there? Domestically he fails to instill confidence that all will be well, happy days are here again, the sun will come out tomorrow... and why?

Because the people who voted for him are the same ones that savaged Bush over his admonition that after 9-11 we all go shopping... who felt it was wrong that we weren't asked to be miserable and sacrifice to support the war.

It's a very simple dynamic in which we prove our high intellect by bravely facing Truth.

Leadership is projecting optimism and confidence. Proving intellectual creds through negativity is the purview of Freshman students at Berkeley.

John - you are right, I was more severe than I meant that sentence to be. My point, poorly made, was that many here had little sympathy for the UK at the outset of the German offensive. And later in the push toward Berlin the opinion of US commanders was that the Brits were unable to do their part.

FDR may have been one of the few friends that Churchill had, even when Churchill was reduced to begging in Quebec. I admire Churchill immensely, not just for his amazing leadership during England's dark years of 1939-1940, but especially later when he was one of the few who foresaw in German surrender the domination by the Soviet empire. (A couple of great reads are Max Hasting's "Armageddon", and Michael Beschloss's "The Conquerors").

Well, actually the numbers say things were worse in 1979-1982. Double-digit inflation, double digit unemployment, 21% prime rate. Carter widely gets the blame, even though it wasn't until it bottomed out, over a year into Reagan's first term

The market though, that's another story. I'm one who believes the market rise over the last 13 years were of dubious merit. It was always riding for a fall. So now it has fallen, and when it doesn't go back to 12,000+ over the next few years Obama may get the blame for that.

We may debate whether giving freedom and democracy to a country once run by a dictator and surrounded by despots was worth it, but don't trivialize for cheap political points the sacrifice of those soldiers who gave the Iraqis that choice--who gave Iraqis the hope of freedom and democracy that you experience every day (and which we are all using now--we are able to write the things we do here without fear of imprisonment and execution. The economy was in bad shape 46 days ago. We were going into a nasty recession no matter what.

However, Obama's decision to add a couple trillion dollars in debt just makes the situation worse. His decision to sharply raise taxes during a recession is worse yet; pretty much all economists agree that's a really stupid idea.

He wants to go on a spending spree and can't accept that the country -- if it ever COULD afford his preferred level of socialism -- can't afford it right now. So he's damned well going on a spending spree anyway, and if that cripples the economy for a generation then tough cookies for us.

Is the Democratic Party stance that no emerging democracy or possible democracy deserves any American sacrifice? (It's a stance of hard line right wingers like Buchanan; are you on his side now?)

However, in answer to your direct question; having a more peaceful middle east will affect our freedoms here. Even if I concede that the Iraqi war was conducted poorly, why do you (and many of your ilk) refuse to concede that it is a net positive? Right now there are only two real democracies in the Middle East (perhaps three if you count Lebanon). How is that anything but a good thing?
