Take this comment for wht it's worth:

You are a good-looking woman in the snow.

I wish it wasn't raining/squalling. I would like to go outside.

Red cheeks on a smiling blonde. What more can a man ask for?...hot chocolat, a roaring fire, and a night alone to talk together and dream.

Dog awaits ball.

Your photo makes me feel 12 again. What are the Games We play should together in the glacial areas? No snowmobiles permitted. Do we snowboard, cross-country ski, or just hide out in a snow shelter out in the deep woods?

Very nice.

I indulged the cat for a little while, sitting in a lawn chair in the back yard and reading while she ran around.

Wearing t-shirts, shorts, and sandals, I am. The sun is fierce.

Is coming home to defrost our footsies.

C'mon Everybody. First version, THP, Feb 7th, 1959 Eddie Cochran played this concert four days after the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, Big Bopper and 2 days after recording the tribute song "Three Stars."

Into the woods we all must go.

Winterlude, this dude thinks you're grand.

blake said...

Oh, that is a nice dog.

That sure seems like a lot of snow, though.

Ann Althouse said...

Hi, Sheepman. We were singing "Winterlude"!

Dogs > chimps.

Dog says: "Can we go back inside now?"

Whose woods these are I think I know.
Dog is freezing his ass off though.

Not me. I've been in pajamas for two solid days.

Althouse looks terrific.

Anything can happen in the woods

LonewackoDotCom said...

One of the things I'd like to do is visit some of those upper midwest StateHighpoints in the snow, perhaps via a dog sled of some kind. I don't think that's been done before.

On another note, could Althouse find out why Insty and Pajamas Media converted Joe the Plumber from someone who asked an opponent a semi-adversarial question into someone who only asks puffball questions of his side on shows that no one watches?

I'm sure she'll get right on that, LoneWhacko...

Yea, apparently even Dirk Diggler's mother can lighten up.

Dr. Meade: [to Scarlett] Now you've got to listen to me! You must stay here!
Aunt 'Pittypat' Hamilton: Without a chaperon, Dr. Meade? It simply isn't done!
Dr. Meade: Good heavens, woman! This is a war, not a garden party!

Beautiful photos of happy people.

Very lovely.

Pictures of the snowy woods on althouse naturally made me think of the latest in squirrel news:

The current Mother Jones issue makes the bold claim that if one googles "Where's the bailout for" (fill in the blank), one of the results is squirrels. But when I googled it, this is not the case.

However, googling "Where's the bailout for squirrels" does lead to "Bail out my squirrels,"

http://www.thesquirrelcam.com/2008/09/24/bail-out/

and "Squirrels need bailout after tough acorn year"

Professor, since you're out playing in the snow, does this mean you're not going to do an Oscars live-blog tonight?

Chris Althouse Cohen said...

Hurray, the Oscars are actually playing live on the West Coast! I thought it would be delayed like all the other awards shows. And it turns out the entire city dies down on Oscars Day. No one eating out at restaurants for lunch at all today. Here are my predictions/hopes:

Best Picture:
Will win: Slumdog Millionaire
Should win: Milk

Best Director:
Same as Picture

Actor:
Will Win: Mickey Rourke
Should Win: Sean Penn

Actress:
Will Win: Kate Winslet
Should Win: Kate Winslet

Supporting Actor:
Will Win: Heath Ledger
Should Win: Michael Shannon (but I'm fine with Ledger or Josh Brolin)

Supporting Actress:
Will Win: Penelope Cruz
Should Win: Penelope Cruz

Original Screenplay:
Will Win: Milk
Should Win: Mil

Adapted Screenplay:
Will Win: Slumdog Millionaire
Should Win: The Reader

It's so different watching the red carpet and knowing that's not that far from you, and having been to that area lots of times.

The oscars are tonight? Hmm. Who knew.

Vanessa Hutchens (sp?) just compared herself to Audrey Hepburn. Ryan Seacrest asked her about her dress and she said she's like a "young Audrey Hepburn."

Zac Ephron's favorite movie this year is "Everything!"

Chris Althouse Cohen said...

Kevin Kline just told Ryan Seacrest that he doesn't vote for American Idol because he still doesn't know how those phone number things work.

"Christopher Althouse Cohen said...

I swear, that boy Efron gives new meaning to the word "vapid".

As a plus: Public Phoebe Cates sighting on the E! Channel!

Tibore said...

I don't vote for Idol because I can't stand the show.

Problem is, I think I'm in the minority about that... :(

I spent the day in the woods, too. Watching men in kilts at the Florida State Highland Heavy Games Championships.

There was a Queen "inspecting" kilts with a mirror on a stick and lots of other fun things.

I hollered and screamed all day; I'm almost hoarse and I think I inhaled a cup of dust. Good times.

I think Chris Cohen's picks are pretty good. I won't be watching the show, even the Wife thinks they are now a waste of time. She rented some movie instead. Burt Lancaster as a pirate.

In other news, Iran announced it will fire up it's Busher nuclear power plant on Wednesday for low power physics testing (something all nuke plants do to ensure core fission geometry is good, neutron flux is good, instruments and safety systems work and respond as adverised.
The Head of Russia's civilian nuke program (Rusatom) will be on hand for the festivities.

For the "Iran will kill us all!!" doomsayers, the Russian designed and built plant has a containment building, the Russian supplied fuel is under IAEA supervision, and the Iranians have signed on to an agreement that like all civilian fuel, they must burn each fuel stick greater than 9,000 Effective Full Power Hours so the plutonium is isotopically unusable as bomb material (PU-241, 242 built up over time, prevent a bomb assembly from generating sufficient power while still in a supercritical mass)

The power plant is an entirely separate matter than Iran's uranium enrichment program. No danger, as long as the Iranians run the power plant as they pledged.

"You are a good-looking woman in the snow."

Exactly what I thought when I first saw the photo. I wonder what it is about the snow and a bundled up tow-headed woman?

I have an excuse. I have seen snow once or twice in the 20 years, or maybe it is just the woman in the photo.

I didn't know either, Simon. And since I haven't seen a single nominated film, I don't see much reason to watch.

You do realize what Ann is doing here: testing you all.

It could be in response to my color space post. I noticed the quiet traffic after I posted that. Anyway, she posted a purply blue picture; remember those sickly babies (remember when she addressed me as nausealinks*).

You stare at that color all night and then in the morning comes Ann in a complementary light. You will notice the yellowish tint in her skin instead of the pinky tint in her profile pic. She surrounds herself in black and white. Then, she or they or even I examine the compliments.

Ann, tell me, did you do it with intent? Or is this all your subconscious? See this is how i visually read. Most of the people here are wordy people. They put more value on words and the actual pictures as words. Trees are trees. Sure there are metaphors for something, but they are the flat metaphor. I combine the whole and see the visual space. I was very good at spatial relations.

I think Palladian must also be good at the visual spaceness. That is why he finds titus' humor unappealing, the word is one thing, the visual another, but a spatial dimensional meaning is different. He is not prudish at all. He is just intelligent in that aspect.

This is also a very hidden but divided issue between the mac user and pc user. Note: window and the word. Note: mac appeal has historically and continually been with the graphic person.

I would tell you more about my left right dyslexic spatial theory, but I am afraid a professor might steal it and make money off of it and leave me still behind the poverty level having beans, onion and rice for dinner everyday this week. Oh well, it keeps me thin.

This may sound dumb, but sitting here in southern California, it's easy to forget that there's still so much snow on the ground in the midwest right now. And I've been on the iChat with my parents in Ohio 3x this weekend, and still find myself surprised by Ann's photos!

Looks cold, but fun. I love the muffled yet crisp acoustics of the outdoors when there's a lot of fresh snow on the ground. Know what I mean?

it's a shame, too, cuz it'll all be gone in a couple days...
