But there's another improvement, the main improvement I've been hoping for. When the comments go over 200, they will appear on the post page once you add a comment. You won't have to click to comment and then click "newer." There is a downside, which is that you have to actually post a comment to see more than 200 comments.
ADDED: Oh, no, there's a problem. You have to post to see the comments beyond 200, but then you only see the comments on the group of 200 comments that your post fits, and then it's hard to see how you can ever get to any sets of 200 comments in between the first and the last. I don't think Blogger is thinking about posts that get more than 200 comments. How often does that happen (other than by some disastrous accumulation of spam)?
IN THE COMMENTS: AJ Lynch says:
It's very possible the new format will work fine for those posts done after the format change was introduced. Capiche?
Ah! I hope so. Quick, post a whole lot of comments here so we can find out. Post anything to get it up over 200 so with can test this theory.
UPDATE: Well, we pushed this up over 200 as a test, and, sadly, the news is bad. You won't see the over-200 comments unless you post, and at that point, you will only see the comments in the group of 200 to which your comment belongs. O, Blogger, why do you torment me this way?
UPDATE 2: Here's Blogger's explanation of the new function, recently moved out of Blogger Beta:
The embedded comment form is more convenient for your readers because they can use it to post a comment immediately, without clicking over to a different page. It also looks better, since it matches your blog’s style and colors. That's true, but unfortunately, the problems we've encountered going beyond 200 comments make this unworkable for me. Fortunately, I can now see that this is an option, and going into "settings," I was able to go back to the old style.

Okay, I'm confused. I just looked at a post with over 200 comments, and can only see up to 200. How am I supposed to reply to a comment (say 211) if I can't see past 200?
My experience mirrors Donn's. At first glance, I too thought that all the comments appeared on the post page - but they don't. Not for me, at any rate. Like Donn, I just see what would have been displayed as "newest" comments on the old system. So if there are 215 comments, I see the most recent 15 with no way to see the older comments. I have to sign out (or use a different browser) and go back in using the old system. Not an improvement.
Who is this new guy Blogger? Last night, you were all over me!
Simon,
I'm seeing something different. If I look at the Palin post on clothes, I see the first 200 comments, not the last 15, and I am logged into Blogger.
How do the 200+ comment threads appear when comments are opened in a separate window?
After I posted a new comment on the >200 thread I saw only the latest dozen or so.
I had to hit preview a couple of times before it gave me the chance to log into my Google account. The old way, there were boxes for my login and password once I clicked on "Post a comment."
I just figured that out. At first it did not show the newest comments, now it does. Better.
After I posted a new comment on the >200 thread I saw only the latest dozen or so.
My question is; what if you are wanting to comment on a plus 200 thread, but can't see anything over that until after you post....does that makes sense?
It's very possible the new format will work fine for those posts done after the format change was introduced. Capiche?

It takes a juicy Sarah Palin post to get into that 200+ range
I don't like the new comment system.
Is Ann the most popular blogger on Blogger?
If not, there's probably some other blog out there getting 200+ comments all the time. So it may be that Blogger is looking to handle this particular issue.
Hmmm. That's weird. I got a conflicting edit error while trying to post this and it killed the comment box--I couldn't resubmit. I guess my selectAll-copy-post strategy is still necessary.
I really love Althouse and all her commenters and hope this means I can become a commenter too.
Wow. I guess it does.
Change is difficult. And I iHOPE that this will work since I've tried to comment already. Plus please let us do HTML.
OK worked. The comments on old threads that are over 200 are unable to be seen. Its a bug. /shrug
OK, I feel like a failure. My young trick wanted to keep going and I am only good for about 20 minutes. I know he was disappointed but 20 minutes is my max.

Got it. Oh, and go RAYS!!!!
Now the rare clumbers are pissed at me because I had someone come over. They won't even look at me. They are totally depressed.
Althouse needs to dig deep and find a topic she can post that would generate tons of traffic, like she used to do in the good old days of the recent past! Alas, will she find that well of intellect that reserve of strength to post that most wonderful topic. Oh well, we'll find out later!

Geez, this new system sucks. If you're not logged in yet, and you enter a comment and hit "Post", it won't let you enter your username and password---it just rejects the comment. You have to preview to get the chance to log in.
I love the new system and i love the divine Miss A.
Colin Powell is in the house.
"I stand before you tonight as an African-American," Mr Powell said.
"Many people have said to me you became secretary of state of the USA, is it still necessary to say that you are an African-American or that you are black, and I say, yes, so that we can remind our children.
"It took a lot of people struggling to bring me to this point in history. I didn't just drop out of the sky, people came from my continent in chains."

Again, you've outgrown Blogger. And there are several stand-alone comment systems that are much more flexible and powerful, such as disqus.com .
And for those 500+ comments liveblogging posts, you need something else entirely, like a chat widget.
What I don't like about this comment box is that there's no indication of how to make links, to blockquotes, etc.
And they make me type in my open id for every comment I make! And I can't tell how to determine what name appears above my comments.

But if I click on the post title, I see the first 200... but not the 200+.
It worked! Didn't it????
AJ was right!
I hope.
So, how do we see the earlier comments, numbers thru 200?
Yup, and you definitely have to post a new comment or go back to see the ones over 200. Shoot.

Don't know what would happen for an inbetween set of 200.
