"For Thompson, Goal Is to Don Reagan Mantle."

Who is Don Reagan Mantle?

Freeman Hunt has the best take: "The race is over. Get used to typing "President Thompson.".

If Thompson can keep up his comfortable style and waver not on national defense, I'm in with Fred. Guiliani or Romney would be acceptable, too.

Hillary scares the lights outta me. Too much jello in her feet for these times. And anyone who has shown the kind of visceral dislike for military folks she has can't lead them. Ain't possible. She's Carter in drag. I'll take Thompson miming Reagan.

Yes, on all accounts.

That headline made me think of a placekicker for Don Regan- Ronald Reagan- Mickey Mantle’s team.

Yes Fred is winning hearts 200 at a time thats for sure. What are the headlines here "Months in preparation. Hollywood glitz. Meager crowd, lackluster performance....what he isn't reading from a script on a TV set"?

If Thompson, Guiliani and Nuk'em Mitt are your options in life its time to go to a different store.

You are misparsing the sentence. The verb is "mantle"; he wants to mantle Don Reagan. Similar to "the ripest fruit first falls", or "yesterday this day's madness did prepare". So Fred wants to put a mantle on some guy named Don Reagan.

An odd plank for a campaign, but at least he's not trying to return us to the gold standard.

HD, Fred is pacing the race. It's early and there's just no way to sustain a wow level till the vote. He'll steadily get there as others expend themselves. Actors and (smart) lawyers get timing.

The Dems have nothin' to adverse, as in Why not the worst in these uncertain times?

(And that's why we need Fred, who wants to put on Reagan's shelf above the fireplace.)

Don Reagan Mantle was the drinking buddy of Honky Nixon Ford and William Fillmore Martin back in the ol' Toots Shor days....

"...voted in favor of restrictions on abor-tion."

...forget the cloak for a moment, I wanna know about 'abor-tions'.

My guess - and I'm usually right about these things - is that it's a military term.

As in:

"Squad! Atten-shun! All cadets who are preg-nant take one step forward. Not you Private, don't you re-call you had an abor-tion last week you goon! Squad! Atten-shun!"

Don Reagan Mantle? He is the Capo di Tutti Capi of Hollywood political baseball players.

I suspect Thomopson already has the "Reagan image," what with actor background. Doesnt have Reagan's executive experience (people do forget Reagan was the Govenor of CA and not just an actor). My take at this point is that I would go with Rudy, Thompson as Rs or Clinton as the D. I prefer Rudy's more socially liberal stands, but somehow I think Thompson may end up being the R to beat. Time will tell in the excruciatingly long campaign. JMO.

I am glad to get this show going, his quality as a candidate needs to be fleshed out and mucking it out with Tancredo, Paul, et al like the other top tier guys have been doing, will tell us more than his stealth campaign has done.

Ronald Reagan? The sooner folks get over that fantasy, the better. To start with, he's a lawyer, and besides that, he's never co-starred with a chimp.

Another headline in a similar vein:

Progress in Iraq Would Buoy George.

Peter Hoh said...

What I meant to write was:

One hopes that Thompson does not try to Don Rickles Mantle.

Laura Reynolds said...

Better than: Don Ho Mantle

Peter Hoh said...

Meanwhile, Obama would like to (hi)Jack Kennedy mantle.

Heh. My mental image of Carter in drag included green stilettos.

I'm on the same page as Pogo. I want Thompson for the nomination, but Guiliani or Romney would be acceptable. Of course, I don't think "acceptable" matters too much though because Thompson is going to win it.

This guy is going to get as tiresome as Obama!™ very, very quickly.

Andrew Sullivan cited a reader who made the case that Hillary Clinton was Richard Nixon in drag.

Hillary Clinton cited a reader who made the case that Andrew Sullivan was an ultra liberal in conservative drag.

Peter Hoh said...

Trooper York, how many ultra liberals promote free markets, oppose abortion, and adore Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan?

Mickey Mantle's grandnephew.

That's what I was thinking, Amba--grandnephew or grandson, one. Named after Don Drysdale and Ronald Reagan, perhaps.

Sullivan "opposes abortion" the same way that most pro choice people do. I.e., "I find it immoral, blah blah blah, but it should still be legal". He does favor overturning Roe vs. Wade, though, last I checked.

But yeah, he's not an ultra-liberal. He's a moderate Democrat.
