They drag out the results to a full hour tonight, and they lard it with video from the various home towns. But much of that crap is damned touching. The truth is, they all have families that love them. Some have a mom and dad. Lots just have a mom. And Kellie has a grampa and a tiny brother. The grampa prompts the brother to say "I love you," and it makes us all love Kellie, doesn't it?
The bottom three are Elliott, Ace, and Bucky. We completely expect Ace to leave. The shock would be if it was Elliott. Bucky, we know is going to leave soon enough, but we love him.
Oh, no! It's Bucky!

I'm looking forward to the thing next week with Rod Stewart. It's not as if they're doing "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" and similar material. They are doing the old standards (the stuff he records now). Those are great, great songs -- like the old Big Band Week of first season. If Rod turns out to be a reasonably nice guy (like Barry Manilow), it will be terrific.
Gerry: I think what happened is that Bucky's fans didn't perceive the threat because he was kind of good.
So who do the old classics favor the most? Can I get a Katherine-hater to admit that it seems right up her alley? Elliot seems obvious too, but I think Chris could hit a homerun with the right song. He could be really good.
The only problem with the "fossils" doing these old standards is (1) they don't really do them well - generally speaking the original versions are best (Exhibit A - Rod's cover of "Have I told you...");(2) it is the worst sort of suck-up to the fogey baby-boomers (especially coming from artists that used to carry some semblance of being anti-establishment); and (3) it is becoming a marketing gimmick to do so. (Exhibit B - Michael McDonald's (Doobie Brothers?) latest schlock)
Frankly, I've never watched AI (not meaning to come off as being snobbish), but I simply do not understand the popularity of watching karaoke by kids who are willing to be marketed in such a grotesque fashion. I guess I'm getting to be a crotchety old punker.
So is that DialIdol Michael Barone accurate or Zogby accurate?
Sorry: couldn't get the tag right--Bucky played evil twin with Rocky--http://www.courttv.com/onair/shows/hollywood_heat/articles/060410buckycovington_feat.html
I will never understand the appeal of Taylor Hicks, but he wasn't the worst last night.
Unfortunately, Elliott - who was the best - was in the bottom three again, making it clear that a great singer can't win America's heart if he's shortchanged in the looks department. That's a shame. He was great on the re-sing tonight, too.
The "group sing" was horrific, but I couldn't help noticing Chris belting out a few notes of PASSION....and thinking, "damn, why didn't he sing THAT last night - he'd have brought down the house!"
All I know is this: Taylor Hicks wins this thing, I'll never watch again. He's just NOT that good, and he still strikes me as phoney baloney as well.
Katherine still has breasts. The song did less for me than they did.
No matter how well she sings, this will always be true.
JimH, but WHY? Can anyone explain to me WHY? WHAT is Taylor's appeal? I don't get it.
Thanks, Megan, for explaining. I'm just going to have to live throught it, I guess! :-)
Maybe my problem is that I live in Austin and can see any number of Taylor-class acts every week here, and usually somebody really good passing through. He is fun, and he does sing very well, but I don't find him particularly exceptional. And some of the dancing/spazzing (to borrow a word from Tiger Woods) is offputting.
I too am disgusted at Chris for not doing Under Pressure. What a waste. Even Bucky sounded great doing it.
Awwww I was really starting to dig Bucky! Ace, go home!
Ruth Anne: DialIdol claims to be 81% accurate. But anecdotally, that seems like a stretch. They've been right on the money a few times.
But, this week, for example, they have Bucky, Ace and Chris in the bottom three. Katharine is lower than Elliott. So, they were two for three this week - and wrong about who would leave.
I think they knew the group sing was horrific, which is why they did a split screen thing with the performance down in the corner and a distracting clip show, displayed prominently.
Much as I admire the old standards of my parents' day, I don't want to hear Rod do them, simply because he's not very good at it. Why buy those records when you can listen to Frank Sinatra and others who are brilliant? But I'll always love Rod for his early work: "Gasoline Alley" and "Every Picture Tells a Story." "Reason to Believe" -- that was good!
"Gasoline Alley" may be the single most hummable tune I know. I basically have it in my head all the time and that's okay.
I'm giving my highest rating to the whole albums "Gasoline Alley" and "Every Picture Tells a Story." The songs with those titles are also good.
Ann: I agree about Rod Stewart, even his "Do You Think I'm Sexy" era pales in comparison to the early stuff. Reason to Believe was always underrated being on the same album side with Maggie May, but I think its a great song.
Yeah, I know. Shoulda added (the song) to my comment.
Also agree on Sinatra. I still remember the day in 1985 when I was driving around flipping through stations and I heard "Nevertheless." It was really the first moment I'd paid attention to the guy.
I hate to say it but Ace may find a good one. I can imagine him doing "One More For My Baby and One More for the Road" okay, which would be received as great by some. Some soft song, since he doesn't have much heft to his voice.
Although I hasten to add that heft is what enables Sinatra and a few others to be transcendent on softer songs.
