Shot today. I won a 20 pound turkey. It's thawing now because the freezer is full of frozen chicken and quart containers of potato soup. Did I shoot well? No, but because it was raining half the really good shots didn't show up.

It’s my theory that there’s a reason lefties have labeled conservatives (and now Israelis) as Fascists. Nothing to do with ideology but with the simple fact that Fascism lost. Not just lost, but was defeated and condemned by everyone. There’s a psychological advantage to labeling your opponent as a loser. Call him a Fascist and
1. you’ve put him on the wrong side of history
2. cast yourself as the Allies
3. ruled out any compromise

So I had a dream, where this Jewish kid was telling a story, about how these Catholic brothers used to torture him at school all the time. Yank his underwear over his head. They were horrible to him. "We're going to kill you, Kikie Kike." Stuff like that.

And it was a decade later, and the kids are working at a camp as lifeguards or counselors or whatever. And they have a whole case of leftover beer, and they are storing it in an old fridge in a bag of ice. And they are like, "Watch out for snakes, Kike, you dumb fucking Jew."

"He's never been in the woods before."

"Can you believe this fucker?"

And one of the bullies says, "Relax, we got the fucking anti-venom shot, you pussy." And he shows him the anti-ventom shot. "Don't pee your pants and have a beer, all right?"

And the Jewish kid is like, "I don't wanna."

And they force him to drink the beer. And another beer. And he's like, these Nazis are torturing me.

And then they are out in the woods. And the Jewish kid is trying to pee. And he sees a snake. "Ah, shit!" he screams. "Snake! Serpant! Cobra! Rattlesnake! Help! Oh fuck I'm going to die!" And he's crying and terrified. And the snake bites him in the leg.

And the Catholic kids come running up as fast as possible. "Quit crying you fucking pussy!" And they have to tackle him. "Get the shot! Where's the fucking anti-venom shot?"

"I don't have it!"

"The snake fucking bit him! He's going to die!"

And the Catholic kids are running around, terrified. Finally they find the anti-venom, and they run over and stab the Jewish kid in the ass with it. "Quit crying, all right? You got the anti-venom."

And then another snake shows up. And the kids are like, "Holy fuck! It's another snake!" And the snake is making a move for the Jewish kid. "Stop the fucking snake!" And they are all trying to stay between the crying Jewish kid and the snake. And the snake is slithering around. "Fuck! Fuck! The snake is going to bite him!" And the snake is about to bite the Jewish kid. And one of the Nazi Catholic boys shoves his arm in and takes the bite himself.

Saint Croix said...

Years later, the Jewish kid has grown up. Studied hard, top of his class, went to Yale, tried to get to the Supreme Court. And the Senators are like, "We already got two Jews. We don't need three Jews." And so they vote him down. And he is crushed. All his life. He studied so hard. He was trying to make something of his life. Impress people.

But what was crushing him, was this memory of this Nazi Catholic bully son of a bitch who took the bite for him and died. He avoided the family, avoided the funeral, moved away from the whole city. It was this horrible nightmare in his life. "Why did he do that?" And "he should have let me die. I'm worthless."

And then there's a scene where the Who are screaming at him. "You are forgiven!"

And the end of the movie, the Jewish kid is going to the Catholic Nazi bully house, to confront the bullies and their parents and apologize for what happen. He's terrified, but he does it. He rings the door bell. And somebody answers the door.

And they're all so happy to see him. "Ma! The Katz kid! He's here!"

"What?"

"The Katz kid! He's here!"

"Cats?"

"Justice Kike, ma! Justice Kike is here!"

"Justice Kike!"

And they're all so happy. And ma is trying to make it on her walker. "Bobby saved your life!"

"You ought to be on the Supreme Fucking Court! Why aren't you on the Supreme Fucking Court? Justice Kike is here, Ma. Bobby saved his fucking life!"

"I heard you, Frankie! Shut up. Pick up your fucking underwear. Get a fucking job."

"All right, Ma. Christ."

"Justice Fucking Kike," she says. "My son Bobby saved your life. And you almost made it to the Supreme Court."

"I didn't make it," the kid said. "I'm so sorry."

And they're all hugging him and laughing and they are so fucking happy to see him. And he's crying and laughing with them. And they pick up off the fucking ground and they're running around carrying him up over their heads. "Justice Kike! Justice Kike! Bobby saved his life!" And the guy is like, "I'm just an appellate judge on the 9th circuit, you dumb sons of bitches."

"Justice Kike!" And they're all so happy.

Anyway, that was my dream. Was that it in a movie? Anybody remember?

Convective weather likely played a significant role. Possible loss of control surfaces or structural failure following an upset. Thunderstorm tops, icing, severe turbulence and an accelerating overspeed dive. The horizontal stabilizer appears to be missing in impact footage, although whether it separated in flight or on impact remains unknown. A catastrophic loss-of-control event, potentially followed by structural breakup.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ said...

One thing I'd be particularly interested in seeing from the NTSB is the recorded airspeed and vertical acceleration during the final 15–20 seconds. Those could tell us a great deal about whether the aircraft was still accelerating into impact or had already begun experiencing structural breakup.

@Ampersand:
I read the essay and it was excellent but I disagree with her conclusion:

Lionel Shriver:
“I believe that what progressives want most of all is to fail. They are most comfortable being against things. They are most comfortable campaigning for purposes that will never come to fruition.”

That may be true of some progressives. But it isn’t true of most progressives, or of the people steering them. They want to win, and they often do; Shriver herself points to Cuba, Venezuela and the blue states Americans are leaving. Progressives don’t need to stay out of power to escape blame. They will never think they are responsible for any misery their positions caused. They will always find excuses.

𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘺 𝘣𝘺 𝘓𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘭 𝘚𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭.

It's a polemic, not a balanced examination of progressivism. It has some interesting observations about political tribalism, performative virtue, and ideological hypocrisy, but its sweeping conclusion that progressives fundamentally want society to fail is more rhetorical provocation than demonstrated argument.

And importantly, the same psychological critique could be applied to elements of the MAGA movement: political identity built around grievance, permanent enemies, perceived victimhood, and the inability to accept a political outcome that doesn't validate its worldview.

The larger problem: She spends considerably more time psychoanalyzing the supposed motivations of her political opponents than examining the merits of their actual arguments or policies.

In that respect, the essay sometimes becomes an example of the very phenomenon it criticizes: a political argument sustained by moral certainty, caricature, and contempt for the opposition.

Eva Marie said...

IEE wrote:
“She spends considerably more time psychoanalyzing the supposed motivations of her political opponents than examining the merits of their actual arguments or policies.”

That was the point of the essay. She set out to explain how progressives think, not to grade their policies. She says so up front. Faulting her for psychoanalyzing is faulting her for not writing a different essay. And she does get to policy: Medicare reimbursement rates, the math on taxing the rich, the DSA plan to abolish the Senate.
The MAGA comparison doesn’t make sense either, because she beat you to it. She grants that progressives can deliver “an even more lacerating and entirely convincing takedown of the Trumpist Right.” She even admits most of us need an enemy: “witness this lecture.”
I just don’t agree with her conclusion. I don’t think that progressives want to fail. But the problem isn’t that she psychoanalyzed them. It’s that she got the psychology wrong. They want to win, and when they do, they never accept blame for the results.

Eva Marie said...

One more thing:
Shriver also writes that her baby-boomer generation is “abundantly responsible” for where the Democratic Party, the universities and the rest have ended up.
Those boomers were raised by the WWII generation, and that upbringing is often held up as the model for raising a family. Yet something went wrong. Maybe that wasn’t the ideal way to raise kids after all.

Eva Marie said...

When I say she got the psychology wrong I only meant her conclusion otherwise ot was a very insightful essay. And I really can’t fault her for wanting to end on an optimistic note.

Apparently Republicans are trying to "shame" me into voting for genocide. Well the only actual "shame" that I could feel in the voting booth is if I voted in a way that could signal Trump that I support what is going on in Syria, Lebanon, Gaza and Iran.

Ann Coulter is ramlbing on about what a hellhole Somalia is, ruled by warlords, and so we shouldn't take its refugees. Well, Libya is ruled by warlords now, after our tender ministrations, so is Syria, and that is Trump's plan for Iran? To "destroy its civilization." In other words, if Israel, and its henchman, Trump, "win" in Iran, this will create a gigantic Somalia there, and doubtless the people still left in MAGA will scream bloody murder when the refugees arrive on our shores. Same as the floods of refugees from Syria and Libya destabilized Europe.

IEE and Eva Marie offer really good responses to the Shriver essay Ampersand linked. Eva is right that Shriver, a gifted polemicist, deliberately emphasizes political psychology over policy analysis and even acknowledges that a similar critique could apply to Trumpism. IEE is right to question whether her psychological conclusions are adequately supported.

Like Eva Marie, I think Shriver's claim that progressives "want to fail" goes too far. People can sincerely want their policies to succeed while rationalizing disappointing results and blaming others. That's hardly unique to progressives.

An interesting question might be why people across the political spectrum find it so difficult to acknowledge mistakes on their own side. Shriver is perceptive about the moral satisfaction of condemning political opponents, but some comments in this thread suggest conservatives aren't immune to that temptation either. That doesn't invalidate her observations about progressivism. It suggests she's identified a more common human tendency.

And there's a nice irony in Shriver describing the self-reinforcing psychology of progressivism before a largely sympathetic New Criterion audience. I suspect Shriver gets that point herself.

The pilot flying failed to maintain aircraft control while in the clouds, put the airplane in an unusual attitude, and failed to perform an unusual attitude recovery. The pilot not flying failed to monitor aircraft performance while (if memory serves) changing radio frequencies and engaging the autopilot.

I don't know anything about the India crash.

As for the Florida crash — and this is guesswork — but it appears to me that the crew failed to maintain adequate separation from an area of severe turbulence.

If I remember the Flight Ops Manual correctly, above 20,000 feet the avoidance is 20 miles plus one additional mile for every knot downwind of the turbulence. Their track looked much closer than that.

The horizontal stabilizer had departed the airframe prior to impact. My guess is due to overspeed *after* entering a steep dive. The stabilizer acts to balance the airplane. If it had departed in something like level flight, because the center of lift is behind the center of gravity, the airplane would have immediately pitched down and ripped off the wings.

I spent the evening in a backcountry pub in New Zealand with a rancher who expressed admiration for Trump. He especially was in support of Trump putting America first. "As its leader, of course he should put America first. I expect the same from the leader of New Zealand."

OTOH, we were harangued, out of the blue, in a public garden by a guy we weren't interacting with. He just walked up and let us have it (after asking if we were Americans). He came back about ten minutes later and apologized.

This is interesting. Sounds like the AI/AI-assisted comments are now talking to each other and patting each other on the back.

Soon it will be AIs all the way down.

Gerda Sprinchorn has made a very thoughtful and cogent post. I must say that I agree wholeheartedly. (Satire.)

Gerda has hit the nail on the head, yet again. (Satire.)

On our way back home from our Eurailing months in 1978, my wife and I were seated with an attractive young Dutch woman, who was friendly at first but gradually became almost unhinged about the subject of Vietnam and the US racist genocide etc etc. As if the Dutch hadn't been brutal in their empire, and the family money she enjoyed (from a small shipping company in the Dutch East Indies) wasn't tainted by it.

And I had a campus colleague--a biomechanical engineer originally from Hungary--who couldn't go to an international conference without being berated for US foreign policy, during the lesser Bush's administration.
