Why we're rooting for Cleveland to win the American League Championship Series.

We like the idea of the Edmund Fitzgerald World Series. It's like a "subway series," but the geographic link is the Great Lakes:

Trouble is, no ship going from Milwaukee to Cleveland will be anywhere near Lake Superior. Let's go with the Indigenous People's sensitivity series. Two towns which used to be the home of the Braves and the Indians, now are Brewers and Guardians.

The Brewers were never the Braves. Braves moved to Atlanta.

I wrote that the two towns hosted the Braves and Indians, which is correct. The Brewers were the spawn of the failed Seattle Pilots, whose main accomplishment was inspiring one of the greatest baseball books ever: Jim Bouton's Ball Four.

Brewers total team salary: $143.5–$146.2 million.
Los Angeles Dodgers: about $338–$339.3 million

Should be the Brewers & Rays. Best organizations in the game. The owners hire great people throughout the organization.

Cleveland does a good job developing pitchers but is shaky on position players. And using the top pick of the draft on a second basemen is really stupid.

Im rooting for cleveland too. "The guardians" has to be the lamest name ever. Just call them the Cleveland blanks.

Of course, MLB team names have always included a bunch of duds. "The Rex Sox" and "The white sox" come to mind. Generic.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was a tragedy. Twenty nine people died in a terrifying manner.

I guess I'm rooting for Cleveland, even though "Guardians" is like nails on a chalkboard.

"Would the Guardians play Cleveland! by Taylor Swift or The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald by Gordon Lightfoot?"

Burn On by Randy Newman.

There's only one answer. "Cleveland Rocks."

Elaine: I think Gordon Lightfoot was the boat.

Jerry: Yeah, and it was rammed by the Cat Stevens

Best not to name sporting events after nautical disasters.
If we play England at some sport I wouldn't call the event the Titanic Bowl.

I'd be happy with any of the teams except the Dodgers. Grew up 90 minutes from Tampa, went to grad school 90 minutes from Milwaukee, and spent the last 19 years living 45 minutes from Cleveland. And the "Guardians" name is dumb, there were so many better options. The locals just call them the "Guards", for better or worse. Or just the "Indians".

I prefer the Uecker connection.

"Guardians" sounds like the authoritarian elite in a dystopian science fiction novel.

Atlanta kept the Braves name. Unlike the Indians or the Redskins, the name had value.

I don’t see how it can be the “Edmund Fitzgerald” series unless it is Minnesota vs Detroit, the end point of the ship’s route when it went down. And this would create a problem, since the Twins and Tigers are both in the American League.

Big Mike, Northwestern Mutual owned the ship, but it was operated by a company based on Cleveland. Or so I learned today when I went down this rabbit hole.

The Brewers were originally the Seattle Pilots.

My first baseball game was "Save the Indians Day" in the early 60's. I was like 5 or 6.

Sorta. The Pilots went bankrupt after one year and the franchise was sold to new ownership led by Milwaukean Bud Selig.who relocated them to Milwaukee, his home town.
