"The Greeks did not just shape history; the Greeks gave us history itself. Much... of what we know about many ancient civilizations comes almost entirely from the records of Greek explorers and historians, explorers and historians who didn’t just chronicle the histories of their own people, but ventured outwards to observe and record the sagas of foreign peoples and cultures all across the world. Where others looked inward, the Greeks were the first to direct their focus outward, to chase the thrill and glory of seeing all that was strange and new. It was this trait – it was this trait that would push the West to create and build things that others could not, marking us out from so many other cultures and civilizations where stability and subsistence were the highest ends of life. But it is not just the ambition to explore the unknown that we inherit from the Greeks; it is the conviction that the unknown can be known. The confidence that the world can be charted and measured and mapped and understood...."

"This was the foundation of the Western mind: our math, our science, our medicine. Our philosophy, ethics, and religion. It paved the way for the gospel of Jesus Christ to find fertile soil in Europe and flourish into the empire of Christendom. It was the foundation of the riches of Christian theology – of Augustine and Aquinas and the whole tradition of natural law."
Very well said. The Greeks were the start of Western Civilization. An example of their quality of thought and literature is shown by a movie being made of the "The Odysee" which was supposedly composed 2700 years ago.
People forget that Jesus Christ was influenced by hellenastic thought. The Greeks ruled Judea for 160 years until 164 BC. And Greek was language of the New Testament.
Contrasted with Judaism, which is about alienation, also a cognitive resource. It's a mistake to keep it apart from the Greek polis orientation. It's philosophers vs prophets.
I was suprised to learn that Cleopatra was Greek. The Greeks had ruled Eygpt for almost 300 years when she took power. She was the first one to bother to learn the local language. IRC, she and Mark Anthony probably conversed in Greek.
Anthony and Cleopatra (the play) marked the beginning of romantic marriage instead of political marriage, in Shakespeare's time.
With the Cornell 7 in the news it's brave of Rubio to say a kind word about the Greeks.
There’s a lot of “whiteness” in what he said.

What indeed has Athens to do with Jerusalem?" comes from the early Christian writer Tertullian
Far right and radical left are OK with Palestinian terror tunnels.
OK with the eternal victim death cult slaughtering women and children... in a genocide.
I wonder if Rubio is trying to get a jump on JD Vance for the MAGA vote with this speech. This seems the sort of speech the VP would usually give. See his other speeches to the Europeans.
It has been ages since an American Sec of State defended Western culture. He gave similar speeches at the EU. They of course were horrified by it.
Not all cultures are equal, in spite of what obama and the leftists say.
The self hate evident in Europe and Canada is disgusting.
I get the impression that Rubio has seen enough of the Presidency to figure out that he doesn't really want the job.
I wish Rubio were President right now.
It seems Marco has grown up a bit from his gang of 8 days.
One has to wonder if he actually means the words he says.
Rubio is not afraid to say that some civilizations are superior to others. That cultures in which fathers kill their daughters to protect family “honor” are worse than those in which even sexually active women have a right to life. That cultures in which slavery is acceptable should be condemned; and justification for rape should be met with execution or lengthy sentences.

Rubio has been making speeches like this for the last year.
He has performed well at state.
Bessent is the one I am curious about.
An absolutely stellar speech. Electrifying. I read every word with stirrings in my heart and blood.
Gloriously Eurocentric, gloriously cognizant of national and cultural excellence and patriotic sentiment, gloriously scornful of the "everyone gets a prize" philosophy of schoolmarms and kindergartens, and most gloriously of all, openly contemptuous of the left-wing multiculturalist enemy scum who would denigrate the magnificence of Athens and Rome and Christendom itself so they could say with straight faces that all cultures are equal. He told them all to go to hell today, and I love and admire him for it.
I think it will loom large in the story of this future President. He's my guy in the 2028 primary, for sure.
I think Rubio has the potential for greatness as a diplomat, legislator, or even some day a Supreme Court justice. I'm less certain of his appetite/aptitude for the presidency. Being a chief executive is not for everyone, including people who are otherwise extremely bright and talented. Give him another decade or so to firm up his vision, and maybe I can see it.
There was a time when it was all the rage to claim that Cleopatra was black, because we don't know the name of one of her grandmothers.
No, really. That's it.

Cleopatra (the seventh of that name, but by far the most famous) and the other members of the dynasty of the Ptolemies were descended from one of Alexander the Great's generals, who buried Alexander in Egypt and founded Alexandria there. Alexander's empire broke apart after his death due to rivalries among his army's generals, and in addition to the Ptolemies, it gave rise to the great empire of the Seleucids of Persia as well as lesser-known polities such as the Antigonids, the Attalids of Pergamon, and the Hellenized Greco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek kingdoms beyond Persia. Certain Afghan tribes get their propensity for light colored hair and blue or green eyes from Alexander's soldiers, like the famous photo of the woman with the intensely green eyes that was on the cover of National Geographic some decades ago.

That makes 2 of us.
@Biff:
Bullshit. He's ready now. He's 55, which is on the nose for the average age of our Presidents. He's older than Clinton, Kennedy, Carter, or Obama were when elected, and has accomplished more than all of them put together had done when they took office.
I used to get that same speech from one of the Greek brothers who ran the local pizza place. The pizza was awful, but the brothers were very friendly.
What the hell happened to the Greeks? They were the cradle of Civilization and now they are just another Euro basket case.
Rubio delivers some excellent speeches. I wonder if he writes them himself.
Rubio is doing a great job doing the stuff that Trump gives him the space and authority to do.
I give him enormous credit.
But I think that lonejustice and William50 downplay just how much we owe to Trump for breaking through all of the barriers that have kept so much bullshit in place and prevented so much good from being done for so long. Just contemplate for a moment what our country, and the world, would be like today if Kamala Harris had won the last election, or if Jeb Bush was the Republican primary winner in 2016.
tcrosse, to use a worn out phrase, what difference does it make? If he surrounds himself with the kind of people who can write a speech like that and he has the balls to deliver it, that's the team I want to be on.
Marco has impressed me more and more over the past two years. Good pick for Sec State by Trump.
He should have mentioned that we owe it all to slavery:
“Would Greek civilization have existed without slavery?
Ancient Greek civilization would not have existed in the form we know it—with its classical democracy, philosophy, arts, and monumental architecture—because slavery was structurally foundational to its economy, military, and social hierarchy.“
“"This was the foundation of the Western mind: our math, our science, our medicine. Our philosophy, ethics, and religion. It paved the way for the gospel of Jesus Christ to find fertile soil in Europe and flourish into the empire of Christendom.”
Much of that stuff was lost or forgotten when the gospel of Jesus Christ took hold. This period is now known as the Dark Ages.
"Now, give me a word, any word, and I show you how the root of that word is Greek."
Rubio is a gifted and articulate intellectual. A real one.
Not some phony Obama type.
Each civilization, in its turn had the job of creating and building a stage of human life and culture. From the cave men who built communal living to the Egyptians and Incas who invented empires, to the Greeks who showed the beauty of the development of the mind.
In both their good and evil they created what we are today. Their struggle and eventual defeat was their gift to us. Love them or despise them, we owe them deeply.

LOL. 2 losers who were wrong about everything.
There is nothing lamer in this world than Nevertrumpers. They are the most pathetic political tribe in our nation's history.
Beware of Greeks wearing tennis shoes.
I thought Cleopatra was Thomas Jefferson daughter!
We took an absolutely wonderful tour of the Peloponnese some years ago - feeling saucy, we hired a private tour company to drive just us and our two younger kids around for ten days, with a mixture of physical and cultural activities to explore each day. Our guide and driver, a former Greek Special Forces guy for whom our youngest developed a strong case of hero worship, was from Sparta. He had married a woman from Athens. He said there was still family friction over it.
What a trip - we talked with our guide quite a bit about what it's like to go to school in Greece and learn your nation's history - given that our kids' equivalent class only covered like three and a half centuries.
It's almost better if he didn't write that speech. It would show an executive ability to recognize,, recruit, and retain talent.....Trump is a kind of experimental President. There has never been anything like him before and it's more than likely there will never be anything like him afterwards. So far as diction and behavior go, Vance and Rubio are far closer to what used to be the standard. I suppose there were other Presidents who were radically different, but Trump is the only one who ever exulted so much in it........I've got nothing against dull Presidents. I find them reassuring.
William: "I suppose there were other Presidents who were radically different, but Trump is the only one who ever exulted so much in it.."
Andy Jackson and TR come to mind. Maybe also LBJ and HST, although they were more code-switchers between formal and down-home modes. CC, JSM

Got to hand it to Bill Maher. We may not agree on everything but thank God he is calling out the insanity. That takes moral courage & principles. And deserves respect.

"You told your precious brats that every brain fart is genius, and now those brain farts are becoming Democratic party policy."
Listen to the whole Bill Maher reel. He is spot on.
Its quite amazing when you think about it that Socrates and Plato lived 300 years before Christ. The Level of Greek thought was amazing when compared to others at that time.
When they tell you who they are, believe them...

Awesomesauce. Not all cultures are the same. Diluting the West is a betrayal of the past and of the future.
