"... each pointed my generation of aspirational teenagers toward a Black Camelot.... [Cosby] invested the cultural capital of being America’s dad into becoming America’s minister on Black aspirations. Despite being raised in subsidized public housing in Philadelphia, the comedian Cosby merged with the well-to-do Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable of 'The Cosby Show.' That’s the Bill who built Hillman to show Black families what was possible. But it was another Bill — William Jefferson Clinton — who made Cosby’s fictional world feel like an early draft of the real world. Clinton gave us Black cool in a white Southern package. He was from a place called Hope, like a divinely chosen character we could have learned about in vacation Bible school. He played saxophone on 'The Arsenio Hall Show' and prayed well in Black churches. His casual affinity with and for Black Southern culture was political gold...."
Writes Tressie McMillan Cottom, in a new piece in the NYT called "I Believed in the Promise of Hillman College. What Happened?"

I guess you could say, 'Reality intruded'.
My god can she stop being stupid
The Cosby Show was built on the optimism of Reagan’s American economy. What happened? Too many bought into the oppressor v. oppressed rap culture thereafter. The race hustlers took it from there.
…you were duped. It’s okay so long as you don’t continue to play along…
'...From 2006 to 2016, Black homeownership declined 5.6 percent. The median wealth of a Black family collapsed by about 44 percent between 2007 and 2013....'
'...Donald Trump’s election — and then re-election — was more than a symbolic injury to Black America. His administration has intentionally, skillfully devastated the foundations of Black security and mobility....'
A little cognitive dissonance, on display there.
…somewhere in the video archives there is Eddy Murphy discussing his conversation with Cosby criticizing the language in Murphy’s shows. Murphy was not pleased to say the least. Flash forward to today- at the prices of each back then had you gone long Murphy and shorted Cosby you’d be Musk wealthy today IYKWIM…
Aggie - good find.
The NYT employees lie. Shock.
Believing those Bill’s? You would definitely fit in at Cornell.
"Clinton gave us Black cool in a white Southern package."
"Slick Willy" is quite the phat ghetto handle just sayin...
Bill Cosby often discussed how blacks need to shape up and stay in school, and speak and behave like real adults.
Oh no! what a racist.
What happened? DEI. In the Cosby TV era white Americans could reasonably assume that a black physician was every bit as competent as the average white physician. Thanks to universities and their professors such an assumption these days would be insane.
The rest of us realized the television wasn't real decades (or at least years) earlier. The fictional Dr. Huxtable achieved success through a STEM education and professional certification. What Tressie Cottom may have taken away from "Another World," the sequel to "The Cosby Show," was that college and ambition alone could guarantee a similar success. They don't.
"(B)lack cool in a (w)hite Southern"
ISWYDTressie
Clinton and Cosby were 1990s contemporaries, but wasn't Obama more relevant to Tressie's illusions? Clinton as the first Black president was another smartass joke that some people took too seriously.
“A Different World”? I'm pretty sure that I know more about “Equivariant cohomology epimorphisms for Hamiltonian manifolds.” But good luck on your problem, Lady.
Lots of dubious accusations, and no accountability, in that article. It's all someone else's fault.
The NYT is hot leftist trash.
What happened?
In: Collectively feeling sorry for ourselves
Really, Really In Now: Full-blown wallowing in self-pity
Really, Really Out Now: Not even an iota of acting-white
"Everybody [except Tressie McMillan Cottom] knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't land a plane with, 'Why you ain't…' You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."
Huge fucking eyeroll.
The Supreme Court’s majority smells blood in the water. A series of decisions has effectively gutted the enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson has argued that the Roberts court’s ostensibly colorblind rulings on race undermine the equal protection clause, writing that “deeming race irrelevant in law doesn’t make it so in life.” The right is slicing through liberal democracy to ensure no debts to Black America are paid and no new promises are made.
SCOTUS didn't "deem race irrelevant in law," quite the contrary, it recognized it as unconstitutional because of the equal protection clause.
It's tough when people lie to you. It's infinitely worse when you lie to yourself.
"Despite being raised in subsidized public housing in Philadelphia, the comedian Cosby merged with the well-to-do Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable of 'The Cosby Show.'"
Perhaps "Despite" should be replaced with "Because of", at least to an extent.
Her heroes did not just have feet of clay, they were clay all the way up.
Yes, things were wonderful under Bill Clinton and Obama, and then "The black American dream collapsed". And...searching, searching, searching...black unemployment is 7 percent and white is only 3 percent. America still mired in racism. Oh my, the sadness and tears of rage.
Sorry no sale. Blacks are given quotas and preference over equally qualified whites in almost every profession and education institution. You can come here from Africa, spend 5 years, get your citizenship, and boom you go to the front of the line. Sorry, whitey and more qualified Asians!
Just more gaslighting from the Liberal/left MSM.
Liberal/left blacks believe color-blindness is racism. A Federal judge actually has said as much.
They've learned that you get your way and benefits by constantly complaining, constantly attacking, constantly crying racism. There's even Unconcious racism. Always demand more. Always push.
Always count on conservatives and rightwingers not wanting to be "mean" or not wanting to fight back. Or not caring because it doesn't affect them personally.
As for Bill Crosby - his sitcom bored me to tears. And Bill Clinton sorta dropped the "I'm so black, I'm the first black president act" when he left office. Hillary seems very unblack. And that's even more true of Chelsea.

I didn't watch much TV in the '80s (under- and grad school) but was aware of The Cosby Show. Consequently, my Bill Cosby memories are of his old comedy records. He was brilliant at that.
Lefties generally are fairly dumb and easily (mis)led.
Few remember that some called Clinton "the first back president."
Going by memory, it was because he was raised by a single mother, liked the ladies and was hounded by The Man.
From Grok: "Trump made funding for the HCBUs permanent. In December 2019, President Trump signed the bipartisan FUTURE Act (Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education Act), which permanently restored and locked in annual federal funding for HBCUs and other minority-serving institutions that had lapsed earlier that year and risked ending.AP News
The law provides $255 million per year on a permanent basis for these institutions (with roughly $85 million specifically directed to HBCUs under Title III programs, plus amounts for Hispanic-serving institutions, tribal colleges, and others). It was funded in part through FAFSA simplifications and was widely supported by HBCU advocates at the time as securing long-term support that prior temporary extensions had not guaranteed. Trump publicly highlighted the bill as delivering on a commitment to HBCUs."
Trump did what Clinton and Obama did not do. And yet- she says the way he did it pitted those colleges against each other? I'm supposed to take that as the truth of it? And as if that was his goal?
Preposterous. As her insinuation that Trump's very presence has been bad for Black America.
Democrats hold on the Black community has been the worst thing to happen to Black Americans since Jim Crow. I give you Detroit, Memphis, Cleveland, St. Louis, Newark, Baltimore, New Orleans, Chicago, Philadelphia, Oakland, Jackson, MS, Kansas City, Birmingham, AL, Los Angeles, Gary, IN, Flint, Milwaukee, and dozens of other cities- run by Democrats for anywhere from 60-100 years.
The evidence of their own senses does not sway them from the narrative that has been so fully engrained. Even as it separates itself from reality more than ever.
Progressive liberalism in secular cycles incorporated under a Diversity umbrella.
The left came out with "Trump is a racist" a long time ago.
it's all lies.
Just like everything else the left's house of lies is built upon.
And just like that Barack Obama is a White President.
Nowhere in this article is it even hinted what actually terrible people Cosby and Clinton both were.
Stop looking to men to solve all your problems.
3 namer born in harlem. A "professor" who got tenured in 4 years. Mom was a member of the Black Panther Party. writes for the NYT... Like Paul Krugman and Joe Biden she's never right about anything. Utterly bubble-fied. Thins of hereself as learned and elite.
Your heros were rapists.
Deploying treacle like this, "Clinton gave us Black cool in a white Southern package. He was from a place called Hope, like a divinely chosen character we could have learned about in vacation Bible school. He played saxophone on 'The Arsenio Hall Show' and prayed well in Black churches" should come with a Diabetes warning
...51 percent of Black borrowers say that their loans are greater than their total net worth...
This is intentional deceptive. It makes it sound like overall they are in the negative. But net worth, by definition, already includes the student loans. There is no honest reason to compare them. Doing so encourages mentally double-counting the loans.
"From 2006 to 2016, Black homeownership declined 5.6 percent. The median wealth of a Black family collapsed by about 44 percent between 2007 and 2013"
...there could be multiple things happening. 2008 is the big short real estate bubble, all those households Barney Frank demanded the banks lend to unqualified buyers in minority neighborhoods. Median as an interesting choice of averages, either more household formation of young, less wealthy households, more generous entitlements, which aren't counted in income data, leads to less work, some uber rich blacks getting divorced or dying...all kinds of deceptive stuff...
"...51 percent of Black borrowers say that their loans are greater than their total net worth..."
Well, yeah. That's how it works.
When my wife and I borrowed money to buy our first and second homes, our loans were greater than our net worth. That's why you borrow the money. If you have 10 or 20 percent equity in your home, and you are under 40 (and thus don't have a large retirement account or stock holdings), your net worth (your assets) is almost always going to be less than your debt.
If the banks didn't loan money to black people in excess of their net worth, they would be committing civil rights violations.
Is this woman really that obtuse?
"Stop looking to men to solve all your problems."
A great sage once asked that if women ruled the world, why they needed so much help?
What happened?
You woke up, because that crap you just described was bullshit. A story, a narrative, a fantasy, that covered up for bad people behaving badly. Your racist identity view of the world let you you buy it hook, line, and sinker.
I can kinda relate to Bill Clinton except for that Hillary decision way back. That was just crazy. He was probably drunk.
Read it twice trying to find Tessie's conclusion as to what happened.
Trump, of course.
She needs to understand (and maybe the hopelessness she pushes indicates that she does) that the hierarchy has changed.
1. Gays
2. Muslims (with a bullet)
3. Women
4. Hispanics
5. Blacks
Back to the back of the Democrat bus for you and yours, Tessie.
That was so painful to read, I can’t bring myself to reread it to see if it contains any coherent argument. She evidently has a preconceived conclusion and tried to start from somewhere to get to it, but got lost along the way. And she’s a professor? I see know evidence that she can express logical thoughts in English.
That should be “no evidence” of course. Autocorrect strikes again.
You forgot Atlanta, Savannah and Macon Temujin.
