"We always said we would only return to Girls if there was a specific story we were burning to tell."

"I’ve missed these characters, but for a long time I couldn’t quite picture them in the present day. Then, right around my 40th birthday, they started talking to me in the shower.”

Said Lena Dunham, quoted in "Girls is coming back — bring on Hannah, the uber-competitive Brooklyn mum/Lena Dunham has announced a five-episode coda for her hit show, a decade after it ended. The absence of Adam Driver’s character aside, it may just work" (London Times).

ADDED: At the London Times, I clicked on a link to "We love Lena Dunham and Tracey Emin — but, once, we loved to hate them/The violent derision that first greeted the American writer and the YBA from Margate shows us that they got it right." That referred to "Tracey Emin’s big, flashy retrospective at Tate Modern," and I'm telling you this because it took me to one of the most absurd headlines I've ever seen: "Tracey Emin review — a show that gets under your skin and into your bowels/An overdue retrospective at Tate Modern for the artist goes from the famous bed to Emin’s 'death mask'. It’s powerful if a little too tastefully presented — where’s the scuzz?"

Excerpt from the Emin review: "I was 12 years old when My Bed, littered with the detritus of squat and bedsit life, didn’t win the 1999 Turner prize... Here it is lit like an altar, a holy of holies complete with holey tights. It’s a polite, kid-gloves approach. What you need is for someone to pull on the marigolds and plunge into Emin’s dirty dishwater. And yet… the grubby gussets may have been gussied up but the rawness of Emin’s art still comes roaring through. This is a show that gets under your skin and into your bowels. You feel it physically. In the 1990 video My Abortion, Emin says: 'They scraped inside of my womb.'... If you’ve ever had a mastectomy, a hysterectomy, a colectomy, a c-section or a bad birth and a worse tear, your scars will start to ache."

They have no new ideas, so recycle old ones that ever had a pulse.

Enough time has passed where the executives have forgotten how bad it was. Or, most of them, anyway. 'It may just work...' What a ringing endorsement. And Lena Dunhsm, she's a real creator's creator.

I wonder if it will be praised by critics, wonders no one.

Based on that splash screen it should be called "Grandmas" instead of "Girls".

Good lord. Lena Dunham again. "Now even less attractive!!"

Yes, Adam Driver was in "Girls", and he is famously in this scene:

It was accidentally anti-abortion.

Also, I saw Detritus of Squat open for the Violent Femmes at The Palladium.

I'm not a Lena Dunham fan, but on the whole I thought it was a good series. I liked that she was very critically in the potrayal of her alter ego - she was clearly a spoiled, entilted bright student who never grew up emotionally.

I also liked that it didn't show being young in the city as just having a blast, such as Friends and pretty much every other show. They showed that the coolness of Jessa was just a facade to cover how fucked up she really was. That pretty girl Marnie had nothing going for her except for her looks and that the very naive Shoshanna was the only one who grew up and left the group when she did.

The Adam Driver character was well written. The only major flaw in the series was that he got back with the Denham character at the end. I think Lena did that more out of wanting to have sex scenes with him than what mades sense for the series.

I suspect most of us didn’t need that…we were never going to watch it anyway.

So is Ms. Dunham the only one who will not be taking Ozempic for the show? Intends to sport her blobbiness on screen for five episodes?

Thanks for the warning though. I can add this to my list of things to never watch, along with the original show.

Every Ghostbusters needs its Slimer.

What's not to like?

"Content Breakdown

• Nudity: The series featured frequent and extensive full-frontal male and female nudity. Unlike typical Hollywood productions, the nudity was often non-sexualized and presented as a casual, day-to-day occurrence, such as characters hanging out around their apartments. Dunham frequently defended this as a realistic portrayal of body politics and human life.
• Crude and Vulgar Themes: Girls was officially rated TV-MA. It featured frequent, severe profanity, graphic and deliberately uncomfortable sex scenes, and regular drug and alcohol use"

I watched the show. I can't remember much about it. Her sex scenes were memorable though. I think there was supposed to be something empowering about them. I wonder if there will be more Dunham nudity in this new series. That's her brand. To retreat now would be surrendering to the misogynists and ageists.

If Judd Apatow is involved, the show could be worth a look. I'm not a fan of his, but I suspect he made the show better than it would have been without his input.

Still trying to puzzle out the ending of Girls. Like the Seinfeld finale it seemed to repudiate the whole series. It was also harder on the other characters than on the (rather conventional and materialistic) Shoshana. Sure, the other "girls" didn't fit well with the real world, but after watching them for 5 years, their not having a better send-off made me question the time I'd invested in the series.

Lazarus said...

Yes, the series itself was hard on the girls and their illusions, but the ending was a harsher put-down than the series had prepared me for.

Lena was always on the heavy side, but she has really ballooned up. The frozen frame at the beginning of the clip makes her look like a Russian grandmother.

In England shouldn’t it be “Girls In Burqas”?

Should we start a betting pool on an involuntary commitment for her in the near future?

I'll say it again, I liked the show "Girls." It mocked their characters. Mamet's character was like the only normal one.

Actually, I was referring to the image of her in the shower.

I generally liked the series, except for the scenes that had Lena Dunham in them.

By some definitions of the phrase, all four lead actresses were "nepo" babies. Their parent(s) had found success in the theater, in television news, in rock music, or in the visual arts. Add in frequent director Jesse Peretz, whose parents were a sewing machine heiress and the publisher of the New Republic. Adam Driver, by contrast, came from the middle-class Midwest and joined the Marines after 9/11. Looking at the guy though, I always wonder how he ever managed to become a star (if that's what he is).
