The Wife went to vote today, Early Voting Day 2, same place, early afternoon. No Voterpede line coiled up in the hallway; today they kicked the line down the hall, out the door, down the sidewalk, past the parking lot, and out to toward the road. Waiting times in line roughly similar to yesterday.

Well I found out that Andrรฉ Gide had some things to say about accepting contradictions. Basically he said that only fools never contradict themselves. If your worldview is completely coherent, it is probably a narrative imposed on you by others, and to be "wrong" is often nothing more than questioning that narrative in search of a deeper truth. Which is basically what commenters mean here when they assert that somebody is "wrong."

He also said that if you never contradict yourself, you are not being honest with yourself. That being free is very difficult work and it is easier to submit to orthodoxy than to be truly free.

This all came up by accident while reading the introduction to Gide's "The Return of the Prodigal Son" at Starbucks. I guess that I had been thinking for the past few days about the idea that one needed to not fear being "wrong" sometimes if one wanted to have deeper understanding of the world. And of course some people prefer the secure guard rails of accepted opinion. In his story, based on the Gospel of Luke, but his own interpretation, he says that the prodigal son returned because being free was too hard and he was hungry. Probably would have been better if he had studied Gibbons before setting out on his own.

Trump is now growling and threatening members of the press.

“During a tense Oval Office media availability on October 20, 2026, President Donald Trump clashed heavily with Andrew Feinberg, a White House correspondent for The Independent. The confrontational exchange, which prompted viral social media reactions comparing Trump's expressions to a "growl" or baring his teeth, occurred as journalists questioned him regarding the Russia–Ukraine war.

Key Details of the Exchange

• The Interruption: While Feinberg was asking a question challenging the administration's position on Ukraine, Trump cut him off, pointing and stating, "I don't know who the hell you are, but you better be careful."
• The Follow-Up: As Feinberg attempted to continue asking questions about the president's golf courses, Trump repeatedly commanded him to be "quiet".
• Personal Scrutiny: Trump directly questioned the journalist's health, asking, "What's wrong with you? Are you a sick person?" After Feinberg responded that he was not, Trump stated, "I actually think there's something wrong with you."

Was Trump actually pointing out his own“ wrongness/sickness”? What a shameful thing it is to have this creature as a US president.

A Billionaire Wanted a Trump Pardon. His Family Gave Alina Habba a $50 Million Deal. ~ NYT

Just another example of apparent pay-to-play optics around clemency and the Trump administration

Trump pardoned Changpeng Zhao the Binance founder, who had pleaded guilty to failing to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program. The Wall Street Journal reported that Binance had facilitated a $2 billion purchase of a Trump-family crypto venture's stablecoin and helped build its technology. The overlapping business interests and pardon raised questions about conflicts of interest; they do not, by themselves, establish that the pardon was purchased.
https://www.wsj.com/finance/currencies/binance-trump-crypto-pardon-cz-changpeng-zhao-1007fde9

Schwartz was sentenced to three years in prison for a scheme involving roughly $38 million in payroll taxes. He paid lobbyists Jack Burkman and Jacob Wohl $960,000 to seek a presidential pardon. Trump pardoned him after he had served approximately three months. The timing and lobbying expenditure are documented; an explicit payment-for-pardon agreement has not been established.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/11/23/joseph-schwartz-trump-pardon-fraud/

Trump pardoned Trevor Milton, who had been convicted of defrauding investors of more than $660 million. A Reuters investigation reported that Trump personally discussed the pardon with Milton and credited prominent allies, including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., with advocating for him. Reuters also found political donations among the broader network of clemency recipients and advocates. That raises questions about access and influence, but the reporting does not establish that a donation bought Milton's pardon.
https://archive.is/2026.06.11-172328/https://www.reuters.com/investigations/forget-doj-trump-pardon-call-bobby-other-influencers-2026-06-11/

Trump pardoned Wanda Vรกzquez Garces who had pleaded guilty to a campaign-finance violation, along with two co-defendants. The underlying case involved allegations of political favors in exchange for illegal campaign contributions. The Washington Post identified the pardon as another example of clemency benefiting people with political or financial connections. This is a case involving political connections, rather than documented payment for the pardon itself.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/01/16/trump-pardons-puerto-rico-ex-governor/

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ said...

The broader pattern:
The most consequential reporting comes from a June 2026 Reuters investigation, which analyzed more than 1,700 clemency grants during Trump's second term. It found that:

96% of recipients did not meet longstanding Justice Department clemency guidelines.

Reuters identified 290 advocates who helped secure clemency for 197 recipients.

People familiar with the process said well-connected intermediaries could charge up to $2 million for their services.
Two successful pardon recipients disclosed hiring registered lobbyists, spending a combined $2.7 million.
Reuters could not establish the total amount paid to intermediaries or prove that specific payments secured specific pardons. The White House has maintained that a formal review process exists.
https://archive.is/2026.06.11-172328/https://www.reuters.com/investigations/forget-doj-trump-pardon-call-bobby-other-influencers-2026-06-11/

the Schwartz case is particularly concrete because the nearly $1 million lobbying expenditure was explicitly tied to seeking a pardon. The Zhao case raises a different but equally important question about the intersection of presidential clemency and the president's family's commercial interests.

Taken together with the New York Times report I shared, these cases provide a factual basis for questioning the appearance of pay-to-play clemency.

Inga thinks it's horrible to growl at the press. She prefers the Democrat method: shooting press people who disagree with leftists.

My local paper, one that runs a sob story immigration piece every single day, is facing furious calls for censorship by local Inga's because they dare to run stories that report on what one of our actual Senator's says. And he's a Republican and not a Thune acolyte. The leftists say that the only allowable stories should be ones that attack Trump and Republicans. Never, ever should anyone report on things like Slotkins call to arrest every Republican. That's not newsworthy, see.... and we should use government to shut down anyone who disagrees with Inga's style of Democrats.

Vance said...

Hey IEEE: isn't the "usual Justice Department Clemency guidelines" pretty much "are they a Democrat? If so, pardon them! If they are a Republican, they never get any hint of clemency!" So any Trump pardon would not comply with that rule, would it? Because the "justice department guidelines" the media uses are the Joe Biden guidelines, which were the same guidelines that said "Use SWAT teams and tanks to murder people who criticize Biden by invading their house at 6 AM and gunning them down in their wheelchairs."

Smilin' Jack said...

Emerson got there first:

““A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. — 'Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.' — Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance: An Excerpt from Collected Essays, First Series

I find that I am often misunderstood. Not that that means anything…necessarily….

Aggie said...

'...Republican Vivek Ramaswamy 's team confirmed late Tuesday that it produced a controversial advertisement featuring the estranged mother of Amy Acton, and the campaign said it will spend $4 million to broadcast it despite facing bipartisan rebuke ...'

'...It did not include the "paid for" tag that is legally required to air on TV so viewers can know who produced and paid for it. D.J. Brynes, who blogs as "The Rooster," told CNN he got the video from a voter who viewed it as part of a poll and recorded it.

Connie Luck, a spokesperson for Ramaswamy's campaign, said Acton's mother was not paid for the one-minute spot. She said the ad will air both online and on TV in the closing days of the campaign....'

So I guess what we're seeing was online, not broadcast. But I would have thought the sourcing requirement would apply online too, for political ads?

Donna Arthur lost custody of Amy Acton at age 12 after Acton's stepfather was charged with raping her. Arthur stayed married to him until his death. Acton and her brother have been estranged since. Multiple outlets cite 1978 court records of the charges.

Outlets including the Columbus Dispatch cite contemporary reports and court records confirming the arrest and charges; he fled before trial. Acton detailed this in a 2019 interview. Arthur has disputed the accounts.

No. I believe that became an exception after authorities- DEMOCRAT authorities- trued to arrest, charge, and fine Facebook posters and other individuals for political posts. Pretty certain individuals can even rent billboards and post political ads on them without identifying who's paying for the billboard- as long as they are acting as an individual and aren't part of any actual campaign group. In fact, I think this applies to any print media also. Possibly applies to television- but most individuals cannot afford television ads.

Remembering that time Joe Biden told half of America to shut-up because he had F-15s. This was after his administration got caught clandestinely silencing Americans on social media for disagreeing with his Administration.

Then again, you only need to look to last week to hear Elissa Slotkin want to prosecute people to deter them from speaking.

The evidence of fraud against Omar is overwhelming and the proof she married her brother to help him establish residency in the United States has been in plain sight, studiously avoided by the DNC-Media cartel, but sitting there waiting for a prosecutor with the will to follow the evidence accumulated over the last three presidential terms.

Most obvious is her fraud entering the country and “switching” from her blood relatives’ name Elmi to her current fake last name Omar, so she could be settled with the Omar family here instead of her father, brother and sister in the UK. It’ll be easy show PBARD that she lied about her identity. The DNA shows her actual affiliations.

And the Biden DOJ had all this evidence in hand but refused to act. We can all assume why that was so.

On a more whimsical note, we are enjoying the hek out of Halloween mode on the Tesla. The screen is a tableau of spookiness, witches flying, zombies crawling, pumpkins lighting. The grandboys are rapt. Elon is just the bomb.

From Insty:

DESTINATION: COLOR REVOLUTION.

"Even before Trump entered office, although well after the Obama administration, Hillary Clinton and the FBI had already begun working on destroying Trump. Chuck Schumer gleefully told Rachel Maddow that the intelligence community was going to go after Trump and that they knew how to do it. . . .
DataRepublican has been doing a very deep dive into the current Deep State project to take Donald Trump out after the Midterm elections, dropping chunks of her investigation, including receipts from an insider who leaked video, audio, and documents from a wide-ranging, shall we call it a “plot,” to amp up resistance to Trump and to create a Constitutional crisis that would, they hope, reshape the entire political landscape.

Including the Constitution.

The core groups involved are military alumni, various intelligence agencies, and, of course, the USAID folks. You may recall that as Trump closed down USAID, a bureaucrat walking out the door darkly insinuated that it was the biggest mistake Trump ever made."

That Ramaswamy ad is disgusting. Both kids were removed from the home and her mother lost custody. The stepfather jumped bail and fled, and the mother went with him. There are women in the world like that--thank God not that many.

How can people, no matter what they think of Acton, think this is OK? I thought we were against the abuse of young girls. Even if you think Acton is a terrible candidate, or even a terrible person, in which case don't vote for her, how is this is any way kosher? I mean, there is contemporaneous corroboration, for God's sake. Her younger brother, who was there throughout the events, has come forth. Why would you take the word of a woman like that over the brother?

This ad is slimy, and I don't get how it doesn't shock people, let alone provoke them to justify it on politics grounds.

I wonder what the Epstein survivors think.

rcommal said...

I mean, if you want to go ahead and support Ramaswamy because he better reflects your values, have it. It's your right, certainly. But thinking this ad is OK is a whole 'nother thing.

rcommal said...

It tells me that Ramaswamy is desperate. Or something.

Is it too late to ask how this is Biden's fault?

Gide was an incredible egotist. Very smart man with very little self-knowledge, but maybe it's easier to know other people than to know one's self -- or maybe people who seem to us to be lacking in self-knowledge know enough not to look too far inward.

Ramaswamy's latest advertisement has drawn criticism from some of his strongest supporters, former Intercept reporters Glenn Greenwald and Lee Fang. It wasn't surprising to see other Republicans criticize Vivek for it, most of them hate him. It was a little surprising to see Glenn Greenwald and Lee Fang, who regularly fawn over him, criticize him.

Did we find the moral bottom of the Republican Party, or did Vivek just stoop too low, too fast? Perhaps the, "All rape is a lie" and "14 isn't really pedophelia" phases were supposed to be rolled out by Republicans later in 2027.

I'm amazed at the number of people who just assume Amy Action is telling the truth and her mother is lying. I have no idea which is telling the truth, but I do know that 12-year-old girls have in the past ruined people's lives with bald-faced lies. (There was a Muslim student in France who got her teacher lynched and later admitted that she accused him of disrespecting Islam because he gave her a bad grade.)

And we can't "Believe all women" here because they're both women and one of them is lying. Or should I say at least one of them, because they may both be lying about different things?

And speaking of liars, here's lying liar IEE. No one has ever claimed that "All rape is a lie", and it is a fact that some rape accusations are lies. The problem is telling which ones, and that is often impossible.

But remember the kids in Afghanistan who are starving because Trump, Musk, and Rubio shut down USAID. I am not quite sure why we are responsible for the starving kids in Afghanistan. If it had been so important, the Dems shouldn’t have botched our exit there so badly.

IEEE is upset that Greenwald is abandoning Vivek? Since when has Greenwald been a Republican? He's only considered on the right because he's not in favor of a totalitarian leftist communist dictatorship. I guess that makes someone a diehard Republican nowadays.
