Hero wrestles with a legal question
"He hadn't raped anyone. What began as consensual sex, at her suggestion nonetheless, had now been transformed into something far different, at least in her mind. If a girl consents to sex, can she change her mind once things are underway? Or if she consents to sex, then blacks out halfway through the act, how can she later claim she'd changed her mind? Difficult questions, and Joey wrestled with them as he drove."

It's indirectly a process-is-the-punishment thing. Grisham "The Associate"

novels in the news. I'll have to finish it to see.

I'm not finding a whole lot of real news. Just liberals complaining about the world order being disrupted, and apparently El Salvador’s special forces do not have restrictive rules of engagement.

Fun fact of the day:

“ Technically, we are still living in an ice age—the Late Cenozoic Ice Age—which started about 34 million years ago. Within it, colder glacial periods alternate with warmer interglacial ones, including the one we live in now.”

Statement from Elon Musk:
Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes to kill people has never been allowed, nor should it be.

Starshield, a different system, is controlled by the US government. What they decide to do is up to them.

Ukraine military violated Starlink terms of service and used it for offensive drone strikes to kill people. That loophole was closed last week.

Starlink remains critical to the defense of Ukraine, as it is the only system that cannot be jammed or blown up, at least for now. Were Starlink to be turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately. This is NOT a threat, it is simply a statement of fact.

Starlink was also crucial to preventing Russia from overrunning Ukraine in the early days of the war, as all other means of communication were destroyed or jammed by Russia.

SpaceX has done more to defend Ukraine than any private company on Earth BY FAR.

That said, I have nothing but UTTER CONTEMPT for the virtue-signaling evil warmongers who push for endless slaughter and offer no realistic solution to the conflict. May you burn in hell.

End of story.

RCOCEAN II said...

I wish Musk had refused to let Ukraine use starlink in 2022 and the front HAD collapsed. This insane war over where to draw the boundry between Russia and Ukraine has dragged on for over 4.5 years and killed hundreds of thousands. It was going to end in April 2022 with a negotiated peace, but the the Brits, and Biden, all decided to help Zelensky and convince him he could "win".

Ukraine is now a wrecked county. Half the population has fled. The Donbas is gone. And if Ukraine joins the EU, what then? 10 million Indians and Africans show Up?

You'd think after after WW1, WW2, the Gulags, the Concentrations camps, people would've learned not to be sucked into these useless war by their killer-clown leaders. Well, I guess not. People are just as stupid as they ever were.

And now getting killed over nothing with machine guns and artillery shells, they get killed with drones. Damn, you don't even have the glory of fighting another man, you get killed by remote control. Bleh.

On the brighter side, according to the NYT's they've discovered a vaccine to help fight skin cancer. So, as humanity stays as stupid as ever, medical technology marches on.

This may or may not be true:
“Turns out Ukraine was in fact violating the Starlink TOS by strapping Starlink terminal into drones they were using to attack Russia.

SpaceX figured out that the terminals were travelling fast by gaging how often they switch satellite connection.

They updated their terminals and that’s what caused the ‘slowdown’.”

The most important thing is that ethnic Russians in Ukraine continue to have no rights and the military bloc that attacked Yugoslavia, Libya, Syria, and Iraq moves to within 200 miles of Moscow and leaves the entire world on a nuclear hair trigger.

All they had to do was sign the Mingsk Accords.

They also could have not thrown a coup in 2014.

They could have not banned the Russian Language and not sent the Azov battalion into danetsk and luhansk after 80%+ of them voted for Yanukovich and killed thousands of people.

This was all on Boris Johnson in service of the British empire. Britain has been meddling in the black sea region for centuries. Biden was a meat puppet by the time this war could or could not have been stopped.

Maybe. As someone who has mostly Irish DNA and has been treated extensively for basal and squamous (but so far never the m-word) skin cancers for decades, I would welcome such a "vaccine." But I could not possibly be more skeptical of the pharmaceutical industry--about vaccines in particular.
There is a treatment involving skin cancer cell hyper-activation (effudex) which I can attest is effective (but not fun) which suggest possible application for more serious cancers. But it's not a vaccine.

Yep. And this:

I don't remember ever hearing the smallpox vaccine described as "helping to fight smallpox".

Looks like Elon’s pissed:
“What’s actually going on in Ukraine is that there is a massive incentive difference between the elites and the people.

The former have grown very rich off the hundreds of billions flowing to Ukraine, while the latter’s children are conscripted to die in trenches.”

This is the third time in three days that Jaq has alleged that the US is moving nuclear weapons "to within 200 miles of Moscow". The idea that the US is planning a first strike on Russia is of course idiotic, but not provably idiotic - you need a certain amount of common sense to understand that. The idea that any part of Ukraine is "within 200 miles of Moscow" is provably false. As I've already told him more than once before, and twice in the last two days (most recently here), look at a Goddamned map, you son of a bitch! The closest point to Moscow in Ukraine is ~320 miles, and Latvia, already in NATO, is within 380 miles of Moscow, so Ukraine wouldn't get us much closer, even if we were insane enough to want to try a first strike.

Forty years ago, you might have had to make a trip to the public library to answer this question, but now a look at Google Maps will give you the answer in 2-3 minutes. So, is Barnacle Jaq profoundly retarded? Stupefyingly lazy? Or does he have the morals of a dung beetle, and enjoy repeating things he knows are lies?

This is more evidence that Jaq is a willing, or paid, slave of Russian propaganda. Bunches of people on Russia Today have talked gleefully about nuking Kyiv, Warsaw, Berlin, just about any city outside Russia, and we all know that politicians are prone to "mirroring" - assuming the enemy has the same morals (high or low) that they have. Does Barnacle Jaq think the US is planning a first strike because he knows many of Putin's supporters would be in favor of doing so themselves?

Aggie said...

The mistake you're making is to assume (a) these commenters are arguing in good faith to begin with, and (b) the positions they are arguing are being defended from a position of personal belief, and (c) they have a stake in defending them successfully.

They're running a campaign. They are paid workers. The pay is the same whether they are right, whether they win, or whether they lose any given argument. If someone is selling T shirts, they are paid by the shirt, not by rating on the popularity poll.

"If a girl consents to sex, can she change her mind once things are underway?"

Yes. She can also change her mind after it's done. Years later even. The important thing is that she is never accountable, no matter what she does or says. You see only men really want sex. Women want what it gets them: now, later or both. True or not, you got to admit it looks that way.

RCOCEAN II said...

Ok, well if you doubters get skin cancer - just say no! who wants a vaccine, anyway? Its probably just a Neo-nazi plot.

RCOCEAN II said...

Huh? Running a campaign? Paid off? Bad faith posters?

Thats crazy talk my friend.

I think Dr. Weasel, is a true blue 100 percent American who can trace his ancestors to the Mayflower. There's no way his posts are influenced in anyway. He's just an God fearin', Flag Wavin', American from Iowa.

Who loves Zelensky, Urkaine, and Never Ending war.

And God Bless America!

Dr Weevil said...

Stupid bigot RCABYSS thinks that if the Ukrainian resistance had collapsed in 2022 the war would be over, the killing, raping, looting, and torturing would have stopped, and Ukraine would be a happy place. He knows nothing about Putin's avowed aims. Putin's RT propagandists openly talk about conquering all of Ukraine, drafting the men, and using their expanded army to invade Poland, the Baltics, and Finland, just for a start. Putin has never shown any sign of being willing to settle for Donbas, or any concern whatsoever for the rights of Russian-speakers there. He wants to rebuild the Soviet Union. And RCABYSS doesn't know that, because he hasn't even begun to do the research necessary to figure out the rights and wrongs of this war.

He hasn't even figured out that dropping Gs and calling people "God fearin' " makes him look like an idiot as well as a stupid bigot.

Dr Weevil said...

Another way to look like an idiot: treat "God Bless America!" as if it were some kind of stupid or ridiculous thing to say or think. How out of touch with your fellow Americans do you have to be to think that?

Jamie said...

"Women want what it gets them: now, later or both. True or not, you got to admit it looks that way."

It does look like that. I do have to admit it. The incidental enjoyment is a lot less important than the what-it-gets-you, however enjoyable that enjoyment may be.

I've always assumed it's because, in matters of sex, we women tend to be ruthlessly rational, no matter how we behave in other areas: what will it get me? This was certainly true for me even when I was in the head-over-heels stage with my husband.

RCOCEAN II said...

Yeah, Dr. Weasel came over on the Mayflower all right. He's just upset over the Ukraine - 5ooo miles away - cause of his 'murican principles.

In my ~20 years commenting on this site, I've mentioned the state and city in which I live dozens of times. Anyone who cared would already know.

What kind of creep just makes up 'facts' about another commenter to make him look bad? An antisemitic bigot, for one. Maybe he should try dealing with my arguments. I certainly don't give a damn where he lives, what he does for a living, what his real name is, or anything at all about him except the quality of his arguments (pathetically low) and their substance. The really sad thing is that he's just as ignorant about Ukraine and Israel as he is about me, and they're not pseudonymous commentators: he could easily find out everything he ought to know about them, but he doesn't want to know the truth.

RCOCEAN II said...

"I've mentioned the state and city in which I live dozens of times. Anyone who cared would already know."

Really? I care. And I don't know. Must have missed the memo. So, if you've "Mentioned the city/state" "dozens of times" you wouldn't mind saying it again would you?

100-1 you don't mention it now because blahdeblah reasons. LOL.

RCOCEAN II said...

Shorter Doctor Weasel - Im not refusing to say my USA state and city. Its just I've mentioned it "Dozens of times" and I've gotten writers cramp from writing it. I'd say it again, but wow....its too hard. LOL.

Which is why the various schemes to dim our sunlight and cool the atmosphere are so stupid and dangerous. The chart in this link could not make our situation clearer. Let's (in the larger humanity sense) enjoy it while it lasts.

Moral coward or immoral coward? Sometimes both of a pair of opposites are true!

I think it's hilarious that a guy who can't even address me by my chosen pseudonym thinks I'm obligated to provide him with data he can use to devise insults. Whatever state I live in will no doubt be contemptible to him, even though there's a 2% change he lives in the same state himself. If I live in Ukraine or Israel, no doubt he'll mock me for being the target of bombs, drones, and missiles. And all that just to avoid answering actual arguments. Of course, being grossly incompetent at rational argument does give him a strong incentive to stick to stupid insults.
