"Combine [bra as outerwear] with the rise of naked dressing, nostalgia among the next gen set for the ’90s and Y2K (the last years before social media)..."

"... and GLP-1-inspired urges to show off newly shrunken bodies; power it with celebrity buy-in, as on the recent VMAs red carpet; and you get brazilla. Bralapalooza. The ultimate late-stage capitalist conclusion to the second wave feminists’ call for bra burning. Bra-vo?"

That's a gift link, as all NYT links are now, so you can go in and see the photographs of models with newly (or oldly) shrunken bodies, shown off in outfits that feature bras worn as outerwear. See if you can find the one that made me say "Her chest looks like a faceless man wearing sunglasses."

…that trendy ‘late stage capitalism’ stuff. Why not just shout ‘I’m a moron!’

Bra "philosophy" is bad enough. Now it is also... uh oh, rehajm beat me to it. The almost end of "late-stage" capitalism. We are so close to Socialist Paradise we can almost taste it!!

Those outfits would have fit in perfectly at yesterday's Nebraska Bar Association Annual Meeting.

The "bra" as outerwear concept has been around for some time actually; it's getting a revival now with the GLP1 crowd. Brabruh.

As soon as I read the phrase "late stage capitalism", I ignore the thing that I am reading and move on to something else.

Not at all similar to that Seinfeld episode. And what was Coleman doing in that mix -- she looked relatively "normal" compared to the rest of the bunch.

Ice Nine said...

Hooray for Olivia Coleman -- the only normal-looking woman on that runway full of women who look like zombies that survived Auschwitz.

"late-stage capitalist"

Nah. Run-of-mill fully automated gay luxury communism. Aka "Fashion".

The rhino horn pic is the one that looks like a faceless man with sunglasses to me.

I had to stop and think what was even meant by "ultimate late-stage capitalist conclusion to the second wave feminists’ call for bra burning." I take it the SWFs thought we ought to reject the constraint altogether, but then there's nothing to sell. The capitalist solution is to do something else with the bra, something that can be sold.

OK, so in late-stage capitalism, are women totally liberated or totally oppressed, or does it just depend on the occasion and their feelz?

Rino Horn Glasses Bra! All she needs is to add a nose, some bushy eyebrows and a mustache under it to look like Groucho Marx is on her chest.

And this supposed to be fashion? 😎

Ugly. The viewers in the stands were more interesting and said more about the style of late stage capitalism.

Clyde said...

The most interesting woman in the pictures was the cute blonde in the audience, in the black dress with the brown purse, brown shoes and a great smile. Contrast that with the grim looks from the models. And what the heck was going on with the hat on sunglasses-chest woman? Most of the clothing looked utilitarian, if somewhat mismatched, but that hat? She looked like someone had been playing ring toss with her.

…I like this theory though I expect the phrase merely a meme…

Now if young women, like Sydney, wear that bra, then that will make us old gents blood pressure rise to really bad levels.... ;-) But like seeing old men in tight t-shirts, well all geezers, male and female, should keep in mind it isn't a good view. Let the young 'uns do the show.

Joe Bar said...

Heh. Ring-toss head. That's what I thought, too. One of them looked like Elton John.

@Brylinski

Correct!

Ice Nine said...

A fashion show of bras and halter tops? Wake me up when those are covering breasts with a bit more loft than a fried egg.

The exposed midriff isn't what it used to be. The "newly shrunken bodies" are bumpy and stringy. Is that supposed to look well toned or something. I remember when the exposed female body was smooth. There was a layer of fat that made the body look feminine. Now, the fat is burnt out and what remains is worn out and depleted.

Kai Akker said...

Worn out and depleted...... Mosby is dreaming up other uses for the phrase. Up top someday when you're in a bad mood.

yeah - MORONS.

n.n said...

Late-stage capitalism is where the people are fat and capital doesn't matter. Where the market is dictatorial, democratic, and the people don't matter.

Temujin said...

As always, the fashion shows are freak shows. And at this point one has to wonder what any of it has anything to do with fashion.
And whatever became of smiling like you enjoyed what you were doing? These people have the look of worn down slaves.

Anyway- if not for Althouse I'd not even know these people still existed. And...I'm pretty sure they have no idea I exist. I think that's for the best all around.

Big Bra strikes again. Weeping up young women into a frenzy, trying to squeeze every dollar out of their parents pockets, so they can afford a Sydney Sweeney for a bodacious commercial, enticing all the young girls back once they forget about why they burned their bras to begin with.

"Yes, television commercials for bras in the 1960s frequently featured models wearing the bra over a blouse, sweater, or turtleneck."

Let’s take a closer look at those breasts.

Some of those chicks have breasts that were made for radio.

The people in the audience are dressed better than the models.

What’s the difference between a bra and a bikini top or bandeau or short tube top? Or boxers and boxer style swim suit? All of these cover the essential bits. I don’t get the fuss.

rhhardin said...

It used to be (1960s) that the back of the bra could be clearly seen through the fabric of the back of the blouse, as formal work wear.

I could only guess it's supposed to be a reminder that the bra could come off or some other such suggestion, since it seemed to be deliberate.

rhhardin said...

Kat Timpf, after a mastectomy, opted for bigger boobs in reconstruction, which I think was a mistake. She looked great with small breasts that she could occasionally complain about being too small. Very endearing.

boatbuilder said...

Well, that was easy. The Devo hat is a nice touch.

I'm beginning to understand why runway models never smile. The joke is on them.

boatbuilder said...

I guess the question the designers were addressing was "What do you do with a bra when you don't really need one?"

It’s Schroedinger’s late stage capitalism: women are both liberated AND repressed.
