"A mum of two died after she crashed her car en route to a hospital after being stabbed at a retirement village."

"Eleanor Barnfield sustained 'puncture wounds' after being attacked at work in Bridgend, South Wales. After being told by the ambulance service that there would be a long wait, the 47-year-old tried to drive herself to hospital, according to eyewitnesses."

ADDED: How different is it in America? See "Shot or stabbed? You may not want to call an ambulance/Analysis: Victims more likely to die if transported to the trauma center by EMS" (Philly voice)("For certain types of injury, it might be best to call the police, Uber or a cab – however you can get to the trauma center fastest").

Was it youths or was it Asians?

When are the youths going to start stabbing Asians ?

No hyperbole - that's shocking.

i'm SICK AND TIRED of all these WHITE MEN committing ALL THESE CRIMES!
there was NO CRIME in Britain before all these WHITE MEN showed up!
i mean.. it WAS white men, wasn't it? isn't that what it means when they refuse to release the race of the villians?

Its hard to tell from the article, but she was stabbed at a "Retirement community" by a 61 y/o man. She was 47, so I assume she worked there. Unless she was some old geezer's mistress.

Crazy that no one offered to drive her to the hospital.

RCOCEAN II said...

Maybe the "by standers" should have driven her to the hospital, and given her first aid.

I left out the most important line: "After being told by the ambulance service that there would be a long wait, the 47-year-old tried to drive herself to hospital...."

Fixed.

The missing part is why did she die, the crash or the knife? If it was the knife, then the ambulance probably wouldn't have gotten there in time either.

Retirement homes are dangerous places. Few get out alive.

I remember when Nick Kristof was blaming DOGE and cuts to USAID for poor ambulance service in Liberia - so maybe there's an anti-Trump angle here somewhere too.

PO friend once told me stabbings seem to be generally more lethal per incident than gunshots because many people consider getting shivved less severe than getting shot, and frequently delay or forego medical treatment. Getting knicked in a vital is with a knife is just as deadly as punctured by a bullet.

Nothing in the article about who stabbed her.

"How different is it in America?"

America is a big place, and like everything else, your experience will vary depending on where you live. Here in NYC, there are lots of hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care places, etc. Getting to one quickly is not typically a problem -- e.g., when one of my kids broke a leg, I wheeled her to the emergency room (four blocks away) in a stroller. Hailing or calling a cab or an Uber to do that is certainly an option (lots of them around too), and people often do that when they want to go to a specific hospital for treatment. Here, an ambulance is required to take you to the closest hospital, and many prefer to be treated at whatever institution their doctor is affiliated with (usually one in Manhattan).

Urban living has its advantages.

A lot of this story looks bogus.

"How different is it in America?"

Different from what? A second-hand allegation?

"In short, for a typical urban or suburban shooting victim in the United States, an EMS ambulance arrives in roughly 6–8 minutes on average under normal conditions, consistent with high-priority emergency response benchmarks. Rural or complicated scenes take longer."

CJinPA said...

Interesting study:
"Unlike CPR and defibrillation for heart attacks, the type of damage done in penetrating trauma often can't be reversed in a prehospital setting."

Though that seems to suggest even a fast ambulance arrival is worse than quicker alternative transport to the hospital. The South Wales incident was not going to receive fast ambulance transport.

Are urgent care facilities able to handle such injury?

RCOCEAN II said...

Regarding the 2nd story link posted by Althouse. Yep, get to the ER as soon as you can by anyway possible. If you're going to "make it" - they'll be the ones that will save you.

If my ER ride was typical, the medics can stop your external bleeding and give you certain drugs, but they cant stop internal bleeding.

RCOCEAN II said...

Its all a matter of where you got shot or stabbed and what damage the bullet/knife did.

Exactly. Never wait for the police/sheriff/ambulance/911 people to help. They won't. Or if they do, you will probably be dead already. Find someone, a spouse or friend or neigbor, to rush you immediately to the emergency room.

I say this as a criminal prosecutor for most of my legal career. If you really want you or your loved ones to live, take matters into your own hands. Never rely on your local law enforcement in emergencies.

And sometimes you just don’t want to take an ambulance.

On the Strip in Las Vegas, the ambulances will only take you to one of the worst ERs in the city (UMC, Valley, Sunrise). Two miles west, and this isn’t a problem. I figure that the fix is somehow in, being Las Vegas.

Here’s why we don’t like them:
- UMC killed partner’s first husband through malpractice. Put in double room with someone with pneumonia, which likely would have killed her. Then the roommate had her posse into their room, where they all smoked meth in the room. And that roommate stole a bag of her stuff when we weren’t watching.
- Valley ER - back surgery there. Dongle on line from her spine. Nurse told jr nurse to essentially use negative air pressure. With that, spinal fluid leaked out. She was essentially paralyzed. ER wouldn’t take calls from the surgeon, and I wasn’t allowed in to see her in ER. After about 4 hours, Doyle fell off. No one noticed. But within 15 minutes, she was able to walk out of the ER.
- Sunrise - flat lined my partner by disconnecting breathing monitors in the ICU. She is allergic to iodine, and they used it when removing her breathing tube, a day early, causing anaphylactic shock. It was only when her heart stopped that the nurses discovered this, when heart monitors went off. Had to paddle her several times to get her heart restarted.

And then there was the time that she went into anaphylactic shock in the hotel. Head ambulance EMT declared her to be having a psychotic break. I explained that you would be panicking if you went into anaphylactic shock, and couldn’t breathe. ER staff, ICU nurses, and hospitality went with the ambulance EMT’s diagnosis. This ended abruptly when they tried to force her to take an antipsychotic med. Called her pain mgt doc, who freaked out - knowing the drug far better than they did. Luckily, she has the habit of hiding meds under her tongue, if she doesn’t know them.

After this, I carry O2 bottles in the car, just so that we have options in ERs, if/when something happens.

RCOCEAN II said...

Great advice Bruce.

ER doctors and staff need to make snap decisions. And some of them arent the best and anyone can make a bad call.

The biggest problem is you're rushed to the ER in an emergency and you can't tell them all your current medical conditions are or what meds you are on. OR...you can tell them and in the pressure of the situation it doesn't really register with the ER Doctor or Nurse.

Big City ER's can be the worse. If you come in at the wrong time, its like being in a battalion aid station.

Actually it is another day for you to show you are stupid.

Ann and the Sun are focusing on this one murder for a reason. They posted the picture of the murderer for a reason.

There were dozens of stabbings in the last week committed by "youths" and "asians" who never have their picture in the paper.

The only people who get their picture in the paper are white men.

Mark is too stupid to understand why that is a problem.

By the way I hope the man is executed if he killed her in cold blood.

Hopefully, RCOCEANIC II won’t ever have a serious traffic accident or a bad slip ‘n’ fall when he’s cleaning the service station bathroom.

But if he does, I hope the MD who treats him is a Jew.

You might get to the ER faster-- but when you arrive via ambulance you get "served" right away. Take my word for it.

“Big City ER's can be the worse. If you come in at the wrong time, it’s like being in a battalion aid station.”

That’s UMC in Las Vegas. The big government owned teaching hospital, that essentially can’t turn anyone down. That means that it provides primary care for the poor, and esp their kids. But it also means that drug addicts use it to get their fix. (Hence the woman sharing a room with my partner, smoking meth with her posse). And yes, their pharmacy provides much of the methadone used in the city. You definitely don’t want to stand in that line. It is, however, the place to go for knife and gunshot wounds. And has the tightest security.

Bruce Hayden said...

“You might get to the ER faster-- but when you arrive via ambulance you get "served" right away. Take my word for it”

When you go in the front door, you invariably get triaged. Not really if you come in via ambulance. You get a bed or recliner. You very often get seen by an RN or MD faster. But then get placed in the normal queue. One recent trip to the ER had my partner in a room by the ambulance entry, and we got to watch them bring patients in that way.

tolkein said...

The problem, which our gracious hostess spelled out, is that the ambulance service would have taken too long. That's why she drove herself. As it is in Labour controlled Wales, this is very plausible. Separately, the reason a photo of the attacker was posted so quickly was because he was white. If he'd been like one of the plotters around RAF Fairford, or the son of an immigrant who murdered those young girls (aged 6, 7 and 9) at a Taylor Swift themed yoga and dance event, he'd have been described as British born or Welshborn. Unless the assailant is explicitly named and described, we now assume he won't be a white local.

Once upon a time, long enough ago to be a fairy tale, I managed to stick a pipe completely through my left foot. On the ride to the hospital in an ambulance, I asked the medic why they weren't using lights and sirens. He said a friend of his was killed in a traffic accident while running with them, so they didn't use them if a rush to the hospital wasn't required. At the time it sort of seemed like a rush was important to me, but looking back, yeah, I wasn't in any danger of dying.

I read that she crashed after driving 300 yards. I doubt an ambulance would have mattered unless it had already been parked in the parking lot when she was stabbed.

Tough crowd at the retirement home. Seriously though, I do a lot of work outside in a rural area in the South, and I’ve thought about what to do if I got bitten by a snake. Drive myself, or wait for an ambulance? Two ERs, but each 20 minutes away in opposite directions.

It turns out it was a 61-year-old white guy -- what one would expect at an old folks' home.

The British tabloid, The Sun, posted more photos of a pretty, young, blonde woman than of the actual victim or stabber. I guess she was the victim's daughter, though the captions didn't make that clear.

Takeaway: In the 21st Century, EVERYONE should know the basics of how to treat wounds from sharp pointy things and kinetically excited small metallic objects.

Seriously, find a "Stop the Bleed" course, keep a few basic materials near your person (a roll of gauze, something appropriate for a tourniquet), and hope you never have to use the skill.
