Supposedly the weapon in space is a kind of satellite that can maneuver close to an enemy satellite and temporarily blind it with electromagnetic radiation so that we can carry out an operation below unseen. Of course the Chinese have a satellite that takes close up pictures of our satellites, at least that’s what they admit to; the next war, which has probably already started, is going to be a humdinger.
Is it at all possible that the AI bros are suggesting we slow down AI development not because they fear the end of humanity but because they fear their real economic prospects are about to be exposed as much lower than the hype?
I think the desired end game for Anthropic/OpenAI/XAI is being part of a ‘regulated cartel’ of model providers and making that the only avenue for consumers to use LLMs, in the name of ’safety’.
Otherwise they are going to soon be obliterated by open-source models run out of money quickly as their profitability premise is based on the idea of fully replacing all knowledge workers which seems very unlikely.

I think we all know what is going to happen - despite the media hype to get the IPO’s across the line.
It’s obviously going to be a fiercely competitive market. There are already 1000’s of models. This nonsensical focus on solving 90-year maths problems means nothing commercially. 99% of use cases are basic and can be performed with any one of many models. It’s the new internet search effectively. And will be basically free.
Any more advanced use cases will also be very competitive. The value will accrue to the users, not the providers of the LLM models.
It’s going to be like the internet. Transformational technology, mass adoption, major productivity gains. But we don’t all hand over 20% of our income to an internet service provider.
This will be the same. Thank you for your service - in terms of burning trillions of dollars of capex. But from here - we will just go with the free replicant!
