(In diligence these days, someone is guaranteed to ask "Is this another Theranos?")
Fundamentally you are always investing in your confidence in the founding team, not the tech (which always has problems). But it is still essential to get a deep understanding of the tech, which cannot be done by watching a demo. We typically get offered a demo, but its always made clear to the company that a demo is just an hors d'oeuvre.
I advise founders addressing potential investors, " The most important thing you bring to the table is not your product or even your company. It is your personal credibility. Never do or say anything that !ight damage that, because the best investors will walk away."; 9/24/26, 10:34 AM

Fred Drinkwater said...: A variety of lab TOOLS have been available on-chip for a long time. Using microfluidics for sorting cells to look for cancer cells, for instance. Polywell chips with tens or hundreds of tiny testtubes, perhaps each one pre-doped with a different reagent.

A company (with a woman founder) now in my portfolio is doing one of these as part of a system for rapid (15 minutes) detection of a variety of antibiotic resistant bacteria (for ER use). They are way past proof of concept and are doing commercialization with the usual industry suspects. But note, it's taken them something like six years to get there, and their basic tech was validated in University before they started.; 9/24/26, 4:29 PM

Aggie said...: This trailer is interesting for the shot of Holmes running on the beach. She has a very awkward gait: Wide-hipped and knock-kneed. It caught my eye, because all previous images featured her in a lab coat or some other concealing garment, and nearly all of the images focus on her face - on her unblinking gaze and contralto voice. I think she uses a good bit of Mesmer's principles in her behavior set.; 9/24/26, 8:10 PM
