From "Passenger Describes Chaos Aboard FlyDubai Flight/The passenger, Miriam Ohayon, said people on board felt the jet lose control and heard screams. 'When they opened the cockpit, there was a lot of blood,' she told Israeli television" (NYT).

Perhaps we shouldn't blame the NYT for not knowing the full story, but the story linked to leaves out all the important details. An Islamic pilot attempted to stab his co-piilot and crash the plane. Passengers broke into the cockpit and prevented that from happening. Two pilots, seated as passengers, took over the controls and safely landed the plane. This is the stuff of Walter Mitty and Indiana Jones. Bravo!

Is there anything the Israeli authorities care less about than being thought Islamophobic? We should take a page from their book.

I don't think mosques or imams should be allowed anywhere outside the Arabian desert, or that one single more Muslim should be allowed across the borders of Christendom. I'd love to see them driven out of Turkey, the Levant, and North Africa, and the glory of Constantinople restored.

Jim Gust (11:28):

Your "other sources" may have just made that up. Early on, Twitter accounts were claiming that the two pilots were a Russian and a Ukrainian, and that's why they fought. After that was exploded, and we knew that the pilot who was stabbed was an Emirati, the stabby co-pilot Omani, some tried to save face by claiming the pilots who took over were a Russian and a Ukrainian. Others said at least one was British.

I suspect the first claim was Russian propaganda, trying to depict Ukrainians as knee-jerk anti-Russian psychotics. It does appear that just about all the passengers were Israelis, so no doubt some (possibly including the substitute pilots) are dual citizens, or immigrants, from Russia, Ukraine, or Britain, as so many Israelis are.

William (11:13am):

The pilot did not "try" to stab the co-pilot. It was the other way around, and the attempt was successful. The co-pilot stabbed the pilot, apparently more than once, and possibly some of the rescuers. There was certainly blood all over the place when things settled down, and the pilot was in bad shape: covered with blood, with an oxygen mask over his face. (Plenty of pictures on Twitter.) Latest reports (not always reliable, of course) are that the Omani co-pilot used an axe, not a knife.

Everyone:

No one's talking about this on Twitter, but it could have been much, much worse. The fact that the plane dived 17,000 feet in a minute, ripping part of the tail off, suggests that the co-pilot was just trying to kill everyone on board. I wonder whether he might have been planning a 9/11-style attack, and hoped to fly to Tel Aviv and crash into the biggest high-rise he could find. It may have been only the wounded pilot's ability to unlock the cabin that prevented him from attempting that. Of course, the Israeli Air Force would probably have been able to intercept the plance, but I still wonder what he had in mind. No doubt the Saudi investigators will soon find out. This is one case where the Saudi custom of publicly beheading convicted criminals doesn't seem at all excessive.

Humperdink said...

Howard: “ We all know this is Trump's fault:”

BTW, the wounded pilot was able to open the cockpit door.

Here is Bibi talking to the guy who subdued the attacker.

The stabbed pilot (from the UAE) managed to open the cabin door, allowing the Israeli passengers to subdue the attacker. The Omani was trying to sabotage the plane's controls. Yanif Hayun put the terrorist in a sleeper hold.

Apparently, two off-duty pilots (one from Ukraine and one from Russia) safely landed the plane in Saudi Arabia. That's an incredible story!

Saint Croix said...

Plane dropped 17,000 feet in two minutes.

Gospace said...

Also reported- the agreement with the UAE and Israel is that all pilots/flight crew of their planes going to be Israel must be from nations that have diplomatic relations with Israel.

Oman doesn't have diplomatic relations with Israel.

Saint Croix said...

Saudi Arabia also does not recognize Israel's right to exist. Although the two countries have been secretly working together for many years now, to thwart Iran.

The passengers were afraid to get on another plane flown by anybody but an Israeli. Saudi Arabia refused to allow an Israeli jet -- even one unmarked -- to land in the kingdom. So ultimately the Israelis had to fly home on another flydubai jet, after the IDF did a security check on the new pilots.

Saint Croix said...

Jerusalem Post report is pretty good.

Dave Begley said...

Clay Travis on the radio made an excellent point. The attack was made 2 hours into the flight. The attacker may well have intended to crash the plane into a building in Israel. The Islamists want to commemorate 9-11-01 in 2026.

And don't forget, the Dems hate Israel and they are the ones always complaining there was a genocide in Gaza.

bagoh20 said...

Very lucky. If the attempted murder had succeeded, or the attempt had been made at a lower altitude, all would have died.
I think that the post 9/11 expectation that passengers will now respond like this is what has prevented another 9/11 more than TSA has.

Saint Croix said...

The attacker may well have intended to crash the plane into a building in Israel.

He smuggled a knife on board, so he was clearly planning something. At a minimum, he was trying to kill all the Jews on the plane.

Flights from Israel to UAE are relatively recent, thanks to the Abraham Accords. These are the Accords started in the first Trump administration by his son-in-law. Basically it's building on the Egypt-Israel accord signed with Jimmy Carter. It's a simple recognition of Israel's existence and diplomatic relations. Multiple countries had signed on, and Saudi Arabia was about to, when Hamas did its terrorist attack, sabotaging the whole process.

This terrorist attempt was done to sabotage peace in the region, to isolate Israel and keep it from having any relations with its neighbors. Murdering civilians is their m.o. If this had succeeded, there would have been cheers in Gaza, in Iran, and some faculty lounges here in the USA.

I doubt that. I can't think of a single non-insane reason for an aircraft to be equipped with a fire axe. If your plane is on fire, there's nothing an axe can do to mitigate that situation.

That said, a camping axe would be small enough for a pilot to smuggle aboard an aircraft, since pilots' baggage items aren't routinely searched or scanned in many jurisdictions. Such an axe would be a formidable slashing weapon, which could account for the copious bloodshed.

From the Jerusalem Post: "A number of failures are being probed by the joint Israeli security team, including why the Omani pilot was not properly checked for weapons possession, since he had a weapon with him in the cockpit with which to stab his co-pilot.

The Saudis are also probing how the United Arab Emirates allowed an Omani citizen to pilot an aircraft flying to Israel, given explicit agreements between the countries that this would not occur."

Accidental or intentional failure? Reminds me of the failures at the Butler assassination attempt.

Dr Weevil said...

I wonder if there's a translation issue, and the weapon was actually what Americans would call a hatchet, not an axe. It wouldn't be surprising if some languages used the same word for both.

Hmmm. Why not check Google Translate? It says they're both 'gar'zen' in Hebrew, but in Arabic axe is 'alfas', hatchet 'fas'. Not that I trust Google translate: isn't 'al' Arabic for 'the'? In that case, it may be that axe and hatchet are both 'fas', but GT for some reason added 'the' for one but not the other. In any case, the information probably came from the passengers, so a Hebrew original of the axe story is more likely.

wildswan said...

What I've read is that it was a international effort. The pilot (who was a Dubai national) managed to get the door to the cockpit open when he was attacked by the terrorist co-pilot. A passenger saw the fighting and alerted other passengers. Israeli passengers dragged the terrorist co-pilot (who was an Omani citizen) from the cabin and subdued him, getting stabbed in the process. A Russian and a Ukrainian who were backup pilots for Dubai, took over the controls and pulled the plane out of its dive. They landed it in Saudi Arabia. The Saudis returned the passengers to Israel.

Quaestor said...

"The plane diverted to western SA. Where in the airspace did the attack take place, if it was two hours into the flight? Must have been in SA airspace, but I wonder how far from Israel?"

According to a graphic broadcast by NBC News, the knife/axe attack by the co-pilot happened near the air border between Jordan and SA. Evidently, the two FlyDubai pilots who assumed command of the A/C radioed ATC (as required) and were instructed to divert to a nearby Saudi airport. According to international regulations, diversion to the nearest landing is SOP in cases like this.

Although nobody axed me, here is the low down on Planes and fire axes:

• Reaching Hidden Fires: Pilots use the insulated axe to break through interior panels, ceiling linings, or sidewalls to fight hidden electrical fires.
• Emergency Egress: The tool helps crew members clear a path or break through wreckage and structural components during an emergency evacuation.
• Clearing Blocked Routes: It can force open jammed doors or compartments if normal mechanisms fail.

And now you know..the rest of the story.

An interesting angle no one here has mentioned, that makes this story very newsworthy, the description "Israelis were in danger on an airplane" disgusting and false, and shows that their survival was miraculous as well as heroic.
A military pilot explains (link) how surprising it is that the plane survived, losing only part of its tail: its air speed was far beyond safe limits, and the strain should have ripped the entire tail off and killed everyone on board.

OTOH, 1300 israelis killed on October 7th. I'm sure you can add some more since then for other terrorist attacks and attacks on Israel.

A "decent and moral person" would have done a little research, especially when repeatedly asked to do so by other commentators, and figured out that the 80,000, 4,000, and 5,000 numbers are baldfaced lies by Muslim propagandists, who count armed terrorists killed while firing at Israeli soldiers as "civilians", and also count deaths from natural causes as Israel's fault, plus the hundreds of Gazans who have been murdered by Hamas for insufficient servility. As far as Hamas is concerned, all Palestinians are civilians, even when trying to kills Jews, and all Jews are soldiers, even when they're infants in diapers like the Bibas children. And RC eats it all up, because he's a Jew-hating bigot and a fool.

Dr Weevil said...

By the way, it's not hard to find out how many Israelis have been killed since October 7th. A simple Google search tells me 968 soldiers, including 6 colonels, plus 88 policemen. People who pretend that Israel is just dropping bombs from great heights on unarmed civilians, and say that they should have gone into the tunnels to fight are, as usual, fools. That's exactly what they did do, and they took a lot of casualties trying to reduce the number of civilian deaths and injuries, while Hamas tries to increase them, knowing they make good propaganda.

Nobody said they were fools. The IDF are simply gangsters and cowards, who instead of going into the tunnels and killing Hamas like men, killed women and children. Sniped people in churches and bombed hospitals and day care centers. They did the same thing in lebanon. Its their MO.

Dr Weevil said...

RCJewHater just can't stop lying. How many of the hospitals Israel bombed had armed terrorists hiding in them, tunnels full of weapons under them, or other things that made them legitimate targets? The answer is: all of them. Putting weapons or soldiers or terrorists (active ones, not wounded ones in beds) in hospitals is a war crime. Same for keeping ammunition in or under hospitals. Bombing a hospital with weapons or soldiers or terrorists in it is not a war crime.

The same goes for child soldiers. Putting loaded guns or bombs in the hands of 16- or 14- or 12-year-olds and sending them to shoot at soldiers is a war crime. Soldiers shooting back at them and killing them is not a war crime. We've explained this to RCMoron many times, but he just doesn't get it.

And no one "revels" in the alleged killing of 168 schoolgirls. Many Americans have grave doubts as to who did it, and as to the number of victims, which kept increasing from 40 to 168, That is entirely different from revelry. Again, RCPinhead just can't stop lying.

Initial uncertainty about responsibility and casualties was legitimate, but the evidence has since narrowed it considerably. The Pentagon has not released its own investigation, so some questions remain. Also, 168 was the reported total killed—not 168 schoolgirls; the victims included children and adults, boys and girls.

In a crash, the airframe may get distorted to such an extent that the doors won’t open. While the skin of the jet looks thick at the entry doors, it’s not as thick along the rest of the fuselage. In theory, you could hack your way through it with the axe as a last resort to escape.

"BTW, here's the news value the NYTs - our elite's newspaper - puts on human life. We get a news article if:

1) An earthquake in China kills 10,000
2) 100 Americans are killed in 'Fly-over country'
3) Israelis were in danger on an airplane."

Once again with analogizing via body counts. A landslide in China has absolutely nothing to do with a universalist, eliminationist, totalitarian ideology. Yet you bring them both up in the same sentence, nonetheless.

"And until Uncle Sam acts like a grownup, instead of vassel, this Gangster State of Israel will continue to cause wars and terrorism in the Middle East"

This war would not exist were it not for Iran's support of sovereignty-destroying proxies, overtly eliminationist goals, and pursuit of ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons for which it had absolutely no use except to impose Sharia as far and wide as it possibly could.

Nice of you to confirm what a contemptible Jew hating swine you are. n (H/T Dr. Weevil)

"If you want to know a 'real American' ask them about our killing 168 schoolgirls? They practically revel in it. Just like they love bombing Dresden and Hiroshima."

Give us just one example. Otherwise, you are a lying crap sack.

A similarly morally cretinous commenter, Crack Emcee, if memory serves, spewed the very same ignorant nonsense as you do. Unlike you, however, he took the hint and went to more hateful pastures.

Hey Skipper, long time no see.

Never hear from you - unless I criticize Israel. Why is that?

Just curious.

Terrorist states will never bring peace, RCOcean, and it’s obscene, and irrational, that you think eliminating the Jewish state will help the world.

RC COLA - How dare anyone support Israel. They must be on the payroll!
Paranoid. loo oo ooooo zer.
History teaches us why Israel has supporters. It's not a grand conspiracy.

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean the joooos still aren't trying to get you.

Nothing wrong with loving Israel, no matter what they do. Israel - right or wrong my country.

But I aint an Israeli. I'm an American. We need to stop this nonsense. This immorality in the middle east. We hold the whip hand. We finance this small gangster country. And they wouldn't last one day without our support.

Imagine LIncoln or Washington putting up this crap. But I guess we'd rather get on our knees and give blowjobs to the Gangsters. Sad.

I assume the corrupt liar left are already spinning Netanyahu did this! conspiracies/

Asshole Soviet networks like CNN and BS NOW won't even discuss the story. and if they do - it's in BS terms.

This man is a hero.

Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian captain of flydubai Flight 1073, fought back after being stabbed in the cockpit.

Despite being severely injured, he managed to unlock the cockpit door – allowing Israeli passengers and the Emirati crew to intervene and save all the passengers.

Together, their extraordinary courage saved 174 lives.

Indian. Israeli. Emirati.

Different nationalities. One extraordinary act of courage."

My opinion of Israel haters keeps sinking lower. You are all the same lie-buying canned ass Owens Hunter-biden-types.
Hamas-hugging fuckheads.
Hamas slaughters Palestinians.
Israel tries to save people.
