Yes, Fauci, Ralph Baric, and other scientists studied coronaviruses before COVID-19. Yes, researchers created engineered coronavirus systems to understand how these viruses interact with human cells. That is called virology research, not proof that they created a bioweapon.
The leap from “scientists studied whether coronaviruses could infect human cells” to “they built a bioweapon and handed it to the Chinese military” requires evidence, not a chain of insinuations.
Grant numbers show funding. They do not show intent, criminal conduct, or a secret weapons program. If the proof is as definitive as claimed, it should be easy to produce not hidden behind the phrase “do your own research.”

There are two (among many others with this virus) amazing "coincidences"-
(1) That the first cases arose in Wuhan, less than a mile from a laboratory that was not only studying but actually modifying the exact same class of viruses to better infect human cells. This isn't conspiracy theory- this is actual established fact from the grant proposals that were actually funded by NIH/NIAID- we aren't guessing about this. The only thing about this work is that we basically don't have a confession yet that the furin cleavage site was deliberately inserted into the virus' genome, which brings us to the other amazing "coincidence";
(2) The furin cleavage site contains consecutive arginine residues- the codons (the three letter RNA- covid is an RNA virus) are the very unusual-in-nature ones for arginine but are commonly used in laboratory genomic modification. The odds of covid's particular coding happening by chance is about 1 in 10,000.
Now, you can pretend this all happened by chance but you are literally asserting that odds of one in a million that this was by chance rather than by design. If you are a moron, sure, assert that there is no way to know if this virus was modified at the Wuhan Insitute.
I might have been willing to agree that the arginine codons arose by chance but adding in the location of the first outbreak makes such an assertion impossible to sustain logically. And note, there is a lot of other evidence of genetic manipulation in the genomic sequence that lay additional odds against it just happening by chance at that particular wet market. Also, you have add in, too, how the Chinese government handled the outbreak right at the start- deleting databases at Wuhan and making the scientists unavailable for any investigation- they literally seemed to be behaving like a person who took the 5th in a deposition. Someone in that lab is in a position to confess to having added that cleavage site but I think that person might well have been killed to ensure that confession is never made. However, the odds against a natural occurence are so steep now that I don't need a confession- the coincidences add up to a confession all by themselves.

Even if we get a confession from Baric, Daszak, or a Chinese scientist who did the actually work, I can predict people like Bich will deal with- they will either claim the confession is false or completely and utterly ignore and never address the issue of origination again- they will pretend to have never argued about it in the past.
This entire debate strongly resembles the debate about the Killian memos that a Bush-hater forged in 2004 and that 60 Minutes promoted. Literally every single piece of evidence suggested that the memos were forgeries created on a modern, at that time, word processing program. And, yet, the anti-Bush crowd kept claiming the evidence could be explained by so and so typewriter that had one of the features of MS Word. As I pointed out at Kevin Drum's blog, you can't analyze it that way- I argued that the combination of all the features rare on 1970 typewriters in one document made the odds of it being a valid 1970 memo essentially a trillion to one against. The natural orgins theory is that COVID-19 or a very close relative jumped from an animal sold at the wet market into a human who then went on to infect everyone else through a chain of contagion- like SARs in 2003 and MERS in the 2010s. Those links back to animals were established really quickly by finding and replicating the viruses from the animal hosts from which they jumped. COVID-19 appears to have been a virus that, at one time, came from an animal but those versions are vastly different from COVID-19 itself meaning COVID-19 arose after years of mutations inside the animal hosts (or was engineered from a sample of the much older virus).
COVID appeared to destroy Trump and usher in crook Joe.

The Killian memo controversy involved a specific set of documents whose authenticity could be tested against known typography, formatting, and historical records. I like Hayek's answer: Government regulation attracts the wrong type of people because good people quickly realize that the have insufficient information to make good policies and that any attempt to do so results in so many unintended consequences, most of which are negative, that the best policy is to do nothing and let people be free. Bad people, egomaniacs like Fauci, see only unlimited possibilities for imposing their views upon others.

Bowles is right to point out that the Fauci celebrity cult was real, and those diary entries show a bit of vanity that’s easy to laugh at. It wasn’t great to make a scientific adviser a secular saint, especially when scientific decisions weren’t always clear and the policies had real costs.
But, Bowles goes beyond just the facts to make her point. While it’s true that becoming famous can be a draw, it doesn’t mean Fauci got a kick out of canceling Easter, silencing people, or stopping things that the right side likes. These ideas are a bit crazy and funny, but they don’t really hold up as solid evidence. Plus, using height jokes to argue against him doesn’t really help her case.
Althouse correctly points out the uncertainty in Bowles’s theory: does having too much power draw people who are naturally inclined to misuse it, or does power and admiration corrupt people who are otherwise good? It seems like both things probably play a role. But what really matters is whether Fauci actually abused his power, misrepresented the facts, or helped hide scientific opinions that were actually valid. We need to look into these questions carefully, without falling into the trap of either overly praising “Trust the Science” or jumping to conclusions based on every little suspicion. The diary suggests Fauci is vain. But on its own, it doesn’t prove he’s a bad person or many of the even worse allegations against him.

How common is this shallow silliness? I don't see any other human being like these people see Fauci, and never have. Even if he did great science, was incredibly hansom or had spectacular........ pointers for healthy living, I still wouldn't do embarrassing stuff like this. I also wouldn't feel that him hiding information of vital importance to world health was just fine. It should be embarrassing to these people, but at this point that isn't a thing anymore.

The conspiracy version always skips the inconvenient details: Proximal Origin didn’t declare a lab leak impossible, it argued the evidence then favored a natural origin over deliberate engineering. Quoting scientists’ early private doubts as if they were final conclusions isn’t exposing a cover-up; it’s confusing brainstorming with evidence. That’s not how science—or proof—works.
Not one of you has presented factual evidence for what you’re alleging. Conspiracy chatter is what the Althouse commentariat does. Evidence is what serious people do. Do better.

When the evidence is largely circumstantial and the key data are incomplete, certainty is a political posture, not a scientific one. Bullshit. The furin cleavage site is powerful evidence for reasons that have repeatedly been explained to you. Kristian Andersen: "the furin cleavage site is very hard to explain.'" You, however, have advanced no evidence for the zoonotic explanation. You just keep prattling on that if an explicit confession is not produced, all explanations are equally likely. An assertion that no scientist would make.
Quoting Andersen’s initial private skepticism while ignoring his later published analysis is an odd way to follow the evidence. Scientists are allowed to change their minds as they evaluate more data—that’s called science, not a plot twist. And no, saying the evidence is inconclusive is not the same as saying every explanation is equally likely. That’s a straw man doing some very heavy lifting. Do better.
My daughter is a CRNA (DNAP), my wife is an ER trauma surgeon, and they’re both here at the lake through Labor Day. I can report there’s been no shortage of laughter as we’ve read through these Fauci comment sections.

Four decades as a working scientist; multiple, multimillion dollar NIH awards. No, not NIAID; I didn't know any of these guys personally; but I know the pressure of keeping your lab funded off soft money. I have sympathy for Andersen, et al's predicament.
And I'll say it again as long as we're sitting around the kitchen table laughing; science does not proceed by holding all hypotheses as equal until "proof" comes along.
Bich, in none of your 100 or so comments this week on this topic have you ever once acknowledged any actual evidence or offered a contradictory fact against what I have posted above- not a single one. You are just about the worst bad faith debater I have ever come across- you essentially no facts correct and you never ever admit to a mistake. You are either colossally stupid or astonishingly dishonest.
What makes me laugh is you waving your daughters' medical credentials as though they provide some kind of inoculation against Fauci's deceptions. I mean, wow, wake up.
The Covid pandemic is nothing if not the story of people with medical credentials falling for, even eagerly embracing, deceptions by people with medical credentials. I don't know your daughters obviously, but you're portraying them here as unthoughtful, uncurious and smug.
That’s one way to tell the story. Another is that science corrected itself in public while conspiracy theories rarely corrected themselves at all. Medical credentials don’t make someone infallible, but evidence—not résumés—is why recommendations changed as better data emerged. The people claiming certainty in 2020 are the ones whose track records deserve the closest inspection.
Bob—our daughter spent the pandemic working in the ICU at Sanford in Bismarck. She told us, anecdotally, that many families refused to believe their loved one had COVID—even after they were intubated in the ICU and the attending physician had diagnosed them. It was heartbreaking, but it happened.

Science isn’t settled by volume, certainty, or insults. It’s settled by evidence that survives scrutiny. If your case is as strong as you claim, it shouldn’t need to lean so heavily on adjectives.
