My MAGA status expires in 5 minutes.

Note: I have made a political contribution approximately twice in my entire life and not even once in this century. I would never respond positively to a political text message, but obviously some people do. I'm pestered with material like this multiple times a day, but I'm choosing this one to blog because "Your MAGA status expires in 5 MINUTES" takes the cake.

And here you didn’t even know you HAD a MAGA status!

The Blogress Diva formerly known as Ann Althouse must now be called Ann America. This is official, effective immediately.

This is not MAGA. It's fishing, but I think Ann knows that. I get a wide variety of these but never a MAGA.

This gets you into the MAGA Lounges at airports where you can smoke, use the shooting range, and freely spout the r-word.

I've donated to NO ONE and I average 18 spam "donate" emails a day!

I know enough not to "Reply STOP" even though I want them to stop.

The only time I've ever contributed was: 1. I got repeated calls from Russ Feingold himself (when he was first starting out) and I was being cordial in a way that I would never do again, 2. Someone I knew personally was running for a local office.

Is platinum MAGA better than being a plantium blonde? Only your hair dresser knows.

I have the same name as someone who votes the other way in MA, where I used to live. I get spammed by groups thinking I’m that person. No matter how hard you try to be off-grid, politically, it’s a lost cause.

Also, if you get punished by spam for donating, it’sa bad deal.

Damn. Should've known better than try and squeeze in a joke after Zrimsek.

Is that a real fundraising text or is it just a scam?

MAGA isn't an official status. There are no membership lists, no entrance requirements. Nobody is in charge of MAGA.

MAGA wouldn't like me when I'm angry -- Ann Althouse

Ann Althouse said...

The message is badly written. The "LAST NOTICE" sounds like I'm about to lose my status as a MAGA person at all. Why would they want to deprive me of that? But if you read further, you see there's some "platinum" status within the larger category of MAGA.

I asked Grok, What is "platinum MAGA status"? Answer: "“Platinum MAGA status” is fundraising marketing language, not an official title, rank, or membership with formal benefits. Republican and Trump-aligned campaigns and committees use variants of it—“Trump Platinum Club,” “Platinum MAGA Membership,” “MAGA Platinum Circle,” “MAGA Platinum Status: GRANTED!”—in emails and donation pages to flatter supporters and prompt a contribution."

I feel sorry for the people who are responding to that.

So MAGA is like Antifa.

Yes, except for the destroying our communities part.

That is NOT a "political text message." Unlike what the "everything is a scam" guy calls "scams," this is a real scam-using the alleged political connection as the hook.

What status levels are there? Is Platinum the highest or lowest or in between?

Orange should be the highest status.

Smilin' Jack said...

There should be a regulation that politicians who send spam asking for donations have to accept negative ones. Nothing extreme, just a button for, “Fuck you, asshole, I’m voting for your opponent and you owe me $5 for wasting my time.” And the sponsor of the ad has to pay you. Another one of those laws that would make the world a better place, but will never happen.

“Correct now” sounds like something the Chinese would say.

I suppose we will just have to live with the "cruel neutrality" version of Althouse, rather than the "Platinum MAGA" version.
I can't say I ever really noticed the latter, though.

Only your platinum status. Don’t despair, I’m sure you still have your gold status.

Mine expired around six months ago when it became clear that the Democrats can’t be any worse.

Ann will always be a small-letter 'maga' to those of who know Latin: an 'enchantress', like Circe, and we're her loyal pigs. (St. Augustine calls Circe a 'maga' in The City of God.)

If you look in a Latin dictionary, you'll probably find 'maga' under the masculine form 'magus', a Persian "learned man and magician". John Fowles' novel The Magus takes its title from the name, and the plural Magi is often used for the Three Kings who bring the baby Jesus gifts.

Samsung recently switched to Google messaging rather than continue to support their own message application on smart phones. Google allows you to mark such messages as spam and block. I've noticed that has cut down the number of these I've received compared to when I was on the old app during the Texas primary season. We will see if that holds as we move closer to the general election.

In 2016 I gave identical tiny donations to The Donald and Hillary so as to get on both their "mailing lists" out of curiosity. I stopped getting anything from Hillary soon after election day. But I continued for a long time to get solicitations from the other side, including multiple loss of status warnings. I forget at what point the solicitations finally stopped.

My MAGA status expired when we started this war with Iran.

Ampersand said...

When I get these types of solicitations, I wonder about the people soliciting me. Are they making a lot of money, are they low life grifters, Romanian hackers.false flaggers, pathetic losers, or college kids with summer jobs? No normal person would send a message like that.

If my MAGA status is expiring, that's something Donald Trump has to do something about, not me.

I started getting text messages asking me to donate to party X about 2 months. We needed to save the Republic. Never responded. And they seemed to have stopped.

The funniest begs for money are the Youtube ones for D Senate candidate in Texas. "If you can only afford just $1 - please give".

It comes across as so needy. Brother, can you spare a dime for a senate candidate down on his luck?

Mason G said...

I don't get these donation requests at all.

Lawnerd said...

If you want to go back to 1979 and say Iran started the war at that point, then you should really go back to 1953 when the CIA instigated a coup (operation Ajax) that installed the Shah of Iran. But your comment was still a bullshit comment anyway.

Dr Weevil said...

If you actually look at events in Iran in 1953, you will know that the supposed 'coup' by the US and UK was in fact a counter-coup against the usurping Mossadegh's coup. And it did not "install" the Shah, who had already held the job for years, as his father had before him.

When I got up to about 50 political texts a day, I got a new phone number. May they never find it. As long as politicians give us no recourse, I will not make any donations.
