There's a lot of tension in Mamdani's Communism. His wife is a full blown Hamas supporter. He's a godless Communist who worships the state (a.k.a. himself). Islamic Communism makes about as much sense as gay Hamas.
But they do have a common point of similarity. Both ideologies are completely bankrupt. They preach against greed, and want to make it illegal to engage in banking, or loan money for interest, or sell food for profit. They want to use the state to punish the spiritual sin of greed. And then they wonder why they are so bankrupt.

People believed it in 2016. I signed Marco Rubio's "Never Trump" pledge. And after he was elected, I was like, "Oh shit, I can't believe I put my name on that." It dawned on me, sometime in 2017, that the USA hardly changed at all. My day-to-day life was pretty much exactly how it was in 2016. All the internet histrionics had zero to do with my reality. And after a while I was like, "Oh, he's just another Republican." So I had the Trump panic, but I never had TDS.
I'm not a doctor -- I just play one on the internet -- but if I had to diagnose TDS, it's primary symptom is cognitive dissonance. It's a person unwilling to veer from the narrative ("He's Hitler! We just elected Hitler!") and accept the factual reality that 2016-2020 was not the Nazi times.
After 01/06, I saw something I had never seen before. The TDS did not go away. Usually, when somebody loses an election, all the hate disappears and finds a different target.
Instead, I saw this insane obsession, this fear, of somebody who lost an election. So the TDS panic continued, which was super-weird. It even escalated in 2024. I've never seen powerful people so afraid of a man who had no political power whatsoever. And the Democrats went batshit crazy, trying to keep him from running again.
The 2024 election broke the Democrat fever, in my opinion. The Joe Biden years were so bad, now Democrats just want to forget about them and change the subject.
After that election, the Democrat party is no longer delirious about Trump. They still hate him, of course. But they're no longer in a panic.
The alternative experiment, communism, has utterly failed everywhere else in spectacular fashion and the only thing that helped China was embracing the free market to pull its economy out of the giant hole Maoism created. Only independently wealthy theatre kids can pretend to be “Socialist” in America. The pretense is of course a lie, as all of them are highly dependent on free market economics for their wealth creation and our laws to protect their hoard once accumulated. Trump is right that a country needs to have a positive view of itself. A nation can’t thrive if it constantly tells its citizens that its history is mostly about oppression, theft, and hypocrisy. And, communism’s past is indeed dark.
However, labeling every socialist, progressive, Democrat, Muslim activist, or critic of American history as a “communist” is more about political branding than history or analysis. Mamdani might be quite left-leaning compared to American liberalism, and his policies deserve some criticism, but free buses, rent control, and government grocery stores aren’t the first steps to the Gulag.
Trump’s language often mixes things up: socialist becomes communist, communist becomes Stalinist, pro-Palestinian becomes Hamas supporter, Muslim becomes Islamist, and Democrat becomes an enemy of America. Ordinary elections become like an all-out battle between Good and Evil.
The left does this too. Trump becomes Hitler, immigration enforcement becomes fascism, and any controversial police encounters are seen as proof of systemic white supremacy. Both sides are increasingly confusing “bad policy” with “existential threat.”
Trump’s main point is that Americans should know their country’s good qualities: a constitutional government, individual liberty, religious tolerance, scientific and commercial success, and the ability to correct its mistakes. His weakest point is suggesting that acknowledging broken treaties, slavery, or oppression is a “Marxist lie.” Saying that discussions about stolen land are propaganda at Mount Rushmore is a bit awkward historically.
A mature patriotism of a 250 year old democratic republic should recognize America’s unique qualities while also acknowledging its many times when it hasn’t lived up to its principles. In fact, American exceptionalism is actually made stronger by the principles that have repeatedly given us the language and constitutional tools to fix these mistakes.
I liked the speech’s confidence, but I’m not as convinced about the need to create a domestic Red Army to support it.

*Trump's "Muslim Travel Ban" simply took the various countries that were on Obama's State Department's list of states most likely to harbor terrorists and tightened the travel restrictions on them. The top 7 just happened to be predominantly Muslim.

Trump is right that a country needs to have a positive view of itself. A nation can’t thrive if it constantly tells its citizens that its history is mostly about oppression, theft, and hypocrisy. And, communism’s past is indeed dark.
However, labeling every socialist, progressive, Democrat, Muslim activist, or critic of American history as a “communist” is more about political branding than history or analysis. Mamdani might be quite left-leaning compared to American liberalism, and his policies deserve some criticism, but free buses, rent control, and government grocery stores aren’t the first steps to the Gulag.

Whenever I see a new Socialist pop up on the political scene, the first thing I do is check their bio. About 90% of the time, I find that the 'Socialist' actually comes from quite a starkly bourgeoisie background, most of them quite wealthy and well-educated well-connected to what is now called 'the elite'.
Mamdani is a great example of this, so is Platner. Although Platner at least had some callouses to show. But the smarter ones, like Mamdani always eventually fail to hide their disdain for the very proletariat that they like to place somewhere adjacent to sainthood in their public statements. They'll use them for useful symbolism, to cultivate support. But their brand of Socialism, read 'Communism', always seems to conclude with a modern shortcut to the new feudalism - with them unsurprisingly at the top of the structure. What used to take generations and actual blood, sweat, and conquest to achieve, can now be accomplished in a few years with some careful psychology and some sympathetic funding, and no need to marry your ugly cousin.
Too many here have lost the plot. We are a nation of laws, not men. Yet you would have us reduce our discussion to men - one man in particular. I’ve read your arguments for some time now. How about mass deportations to reduce pressure on our limited housing stock? Plus some vigorous enforcement of zoning restrictions on single-family homes. Prices on mansions are going down, but starter homes are still expensive as hell because unrelated Indian and Mexican immigrants are living four to a bedroom in lower middle class neighborhoods and paying rent to what are effectively slumlords of the same nationality.

Javier Milei abolished all rent control in Argentina two years ago. Rents are DOWN 40% and housing supply is UP 170%. We should make it a nationwide rule that no housing built with Federal dollars can ever be subjected to rent control.

Talking about "Smaller Government" is just a vague meaningless phrase used by "Conservatives" to hamstring the Right whenever it gets power. Nobody believes in "smaller Government" and it certainly didn't make the USA great. We won every war up till 1945 because we had a big Government.
We also had 90 percent top tax income rate in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. I.e. the period of the USA's greatest economic prosperity.
Government spending (state, local, Federal) is almost 40 percent of GDP. Talking about "Smaller Government" or "Muh Free Enterprise" is absurd.

Somebody did need to remind us that we live in a special time and place that is far different from the hell we are often told it is. The shift from blessedness to power is always jarring though. I remember that from Gerry Ford's bicentennial speech 50 years ago. My impression then (not really accurate) was that Ford shifted from chatter about values to boasting about how many ships and planes we had.
If we have been and are great again, it would have to have more to do with values than with the ability to kick @ss around the world. Fifty years ago and today we've had to face up to the fact that there are limits to our global power.
Also, is it really true that the American character will never change? It's changed a lot. Making America great again relies on recovering something of the virtues of an earlier America, but that recovery can only be partial.
Trump should start calling them “dumunists.” You just take that first “com” out and replace them. You can leave out the “b.” A lot of people don’t know “dumb” has a “b,” and it doesn’t need it. Anyway, the dumunists don’t sound so scary anymore, do they?
Mamdani and his ilk are the direct consequences of the Federal Reserve every bit as much as Dow Industrials 52,000 is. The Fed favored the big Wall Street banks heavily in their early actions during and after the 2007-08 financial reversal, at the direct expense of smaller community banks. This preference continued as the Fed rigged the bond markets via Fed fund "policy" and asset purchases. At one point, the Fed was buying 70-100% of the Treasury issuance, according to analysts at the time. That is the kind of market control that manipulators like the Hunt Brothers were bankrupted and prosecuted for.
Rigging the bond market gave the Fed the leverage to rig the stock market -- less inexorably, but still effectively through repeated jaw-boning, the many announcements of even more Quantitative Easing, and an unmistakable stance that the Fed would take steps when the stock market pulled back too far. No wildfires would be allowed to burn themselves out on their own; the Fed hose was always nearby and its spigot turned on.
But not everyone participated. Big was always favored, in banking, in brokerage, and in political influence. And there's the rub. Someone else was always getting richer than me. And all those someone elses were highly visible and reported on widely, creating a tremendous amount of envy among the left-behinds. (Oohh, the left-behinds of the Great Society....)
All the extremes being registered over the past 20-30 years, and especially in these last 6 years since the brief pandemic pullback of 2020, have put the majority of Americans in one class or another of those Left-Behinds. And all that envy is the fuel for communism, socialism, as well as the ISIS-level hatred of the Islamists.
The one good part here is that Fed policy may be changing with the new chairman Trump nominated. But, in any event, the extremes of wealth, of income, of stock valuations, and of market sentiment as a whole (extreme bullishness beyond most if not all other eras) eventually get corrected. So history shows and history has not ended. It is not usually pretty, but how that correction unfolds, how our leadership reacts, and how our educational system performs, will go a long way toward making the Mamdanis a passing phenomenon, or an increasingly influential and dangerous one.
It's "communism" with a small "c," because the CPUSA, CPSU and all of the offshoots and successor parties are so weak now: communism presents itself in the guise of "democratic socialism." The talk about communism was understandable given last weeks NY primaries, but it still threw me for a loop. What threatens us is more amorphous and not likely to be summed up in a single word. The word combines "fuss" and "budget" and is frequently associated with fastidious, hard-to-please complainers." That doesn't sum up all of Lucy's character and it doesn't sound very much like God. I suspect Charles Schulz heard the word growing up and liked its strange, old-fashioned sound and its comic potential.

There was no Alternative Minimum Tax or Generation-Skipping Tax. All interest paid for any purpose was deductible from income. There were no restrictions on deductibility of meals and entertainment in the days of the "three-martini lunch." Depreciation schedules were accelerated much faster than the actual physical decline of the underlying asset, especially in real estate and oil and gas depletion. Long-term capital gains rates were much lower than income tax rates, with a large exclusion that no longer exists, so accountants went to considerable trouble to convert income into "investments" via complicated partnership structures, stock options, and installment sales. Gifts of appreciated assets were taxed at acquisition price rather than market value. Various income-splitting trusts, family partnerships, and other elaborate vehicles were used by wealthy families to move income from high-tax earners to low-tax relatives or strawman partners.
The bottom line is that no one with a decent accountant paid more than about 25% of their income in overall taxes, not all that different from today's 21% or so for the top quintile.
If the proposals being made for 90 percent income tax rates, removing the cap on Social Security, and taxing unrealized capital gains come to fruition, it would trigger a worse economic crisis than the Great Depression. Many Americans would die.
