In this hit piece, Politico also confirmed that the NYT had this woman’s name and allegations but “sugar coated it to he was “a bad boyfriend”. This so outraged the rape victim that she went to Politico to have them tell her story.

Recall that shortly before the primary Platner was summoned to Capitol Hill and given a closed-door grilling by the same people now announcing they no longer support him, and supposedly assured them no further scandals would be dropping. As Bill points out above, and a number of other folks have suggested, the NYT story that prompted the meeting downplayed this woman's accusations and stressed the accusations from another who could be suggested to be a Republican. In other words, everybody now claiming to be 'shocked shocked' the Commie with the Nazi tattoo is also a rapist likely knew exactly what the NYT *wasn't* going to print, until it started to become clear this clown was a loser from the word go. About a week or so ago I linked a piece from Legal Insurrection detailing how Platner was at best running ahead of Collins by a with-in-the-margin-of-error lead. Real convenient timing given that July 13 is the drop dead date for putting a party candidate on the general election ballot in Maine.

The "Lion of the Senate" literally left a woman to drown all by herself- Platner is the perfect Dem Senate candidate.
I think this is an intra-party struggle. The husband/wife DSA duo that found and promoted Platner knew the baggage, and meanwhile the Progressives have been assembling their dossier on him.
They don't want another commie fronting their party in November. So they have timed this to jettison Platner before the deadline, which is a week away, giving them 3 weeks to produce a candidate. Janet Mills is already in place as a fall back, but it will probably be someone young and fairly good looking, and definitely Progressive. They can sell that in Maine.
Platner hasn't given up yet, probably because there is one or two more scandals that remain un-aired at the moment. It's a predictable position, knowing there's something worse out there, and thinking you might be able to squeeze past the current problems, as long as it doesn't make it out.
But I'm guessing the Progressives already know about other problems, and will sweat him until it's too late to do anything but quit - while they work their preferred candidate on the sly.
Let's see his Q2 fundraising numbers. That will tell the true story of why he's dropping out.

Yeah, the timing of this absolutely stinks.
The Democrat party is terrified of its own voters. They could have come out with this "surprise" any time. What they were afraid of, is if that if it came out too soon, the revelation would be challenged, or would otherwise fall apart. An even worse possibility is that he would have won the primary anyway. Boy, that would really make the Democrats look bad. The Nazi rapist party.
So they waited for the primary vote to finish, let him win that, and then -- after the voters are deprived of their voice -- the party came in and brought out the big gun: a woman alleging he raped her. And saying, quite specifically, that he was "blackout drunk" and had no memory of what he had done.
It's entirely possible, of course, that she's telling the truth about what happened. But it's the Brett Kavanaugh accusation, all over again. Why did you time this attack so specifically?
You had sex with your drunk boyfriend when you didn't want to. And then you broke up with him. And you didn't want to call it rape. And you didn't want to call the police. Okay. I get all of that.
But if you were actually raped -- you know, the crime -- please explain the timing of this outside-the-courtroom accusation. After the popular vote, and days before the party deadline for removing an elected nominee and supplanting him with a party favorite.

That "by definition" wording when asked about whether it was rape jumped out at me, too. So I'm trying to put myself in her shoes. I'm thinking that maybe she's sincerely struggled with whether to come out and tell her story. Perhaps there had been a pattern of him stopping by for a--pardon me--booty call after he'd been out on the town? And that particular time it was unwelcome and he was too drunk and therefore too aggressive? I'm not questioning her story, per se--I have no way to verify it either way. But I'm wondering if this type of scenario explains her hesitation and her choice of "by definition" within the context of the nature of the relationship?
I fear I'm not being clear here. It's not a clear situation, because we don't really know. Just trying to figure out an explanation of that wording. There must be some sort of context for it ?
Or maybe she just really was reluctant. Yet, the timing... .

I mean, maybe **at the time** she was more concerned over getting out of a relationship with a drunk than anything else. Maybe she just wanted to get out of the situation without going through the whole process of a rape accusation and then undergoing questions about the ongoing nature and patterns of the relationship. Clearly, a line had been crossed because she reportedly immediately ended the relationship. Who knows what was going on in her mind? Obviously, I'm just speculating with sufficient knowledge.
Platner isn't someone I would have voted for, if I lived in Maine, because he's too progressive for me and his past is problematic even before this. So it really isn't in my lane either way.
I do wonder, though.
