Who is the real vandal? Someone checking out the peeling paint or the one who awarded a no-bid government contract to an acquaintance (donor?) who did defective work?

Videos show mounted police corralling and arresting ordinary tourists with the intensity of a tactical raid. They’re carrying out these orders enthusiastically, all to shield a President from public embarrassment. This is the sort of authoritarian overreach we once insisted could never happen here. The soft tone of many reactions only underscores how much we’ve normalized the unacceptable.

"A named arrest was already in view, an anti-Trump marking near the site was already in public view, and law enforcement silence on every detail doesn't make vandalism imaginary. It means the public should demand facts, arrests, charges, and accountability.

If vandals touched the Reflecting Pool out of politics, boredom, contempt, or pure spite, the motive is secondary; the deed tells us enough. America's enemies don't always arrive with uniforms or manifestos. Occasionally they bring spray paint, chemicals, knives, or a hand reaching for what should've been left alone."

Beware of the emerging reflecting pool Nazis! It’s Nazi-ism, I tell you! What could be clearer? He’s really Hitler! I mean it! Literally! The camps will open any day!

So, Trump and the MAGA gullible now alleges that multiple individuals have been arrested for "vandalizing" his "beautiful" coating renovation on the Pool, and supposedly causing the proliferation of algae and the visible deterioration of the coating.

While Trump's allegations are ridiculous on their face, having introduced the judicial process into this controversy, it will provide an opportunity for a thorough and dispassionate review of the entire project.

For example, exactly what coatings were applied? Exactly what surface preparation of the underlying substrate was conducted? Under what quality procedures was the project performed? Was surface prep and coating application conducted under the supervision of a NACE-certified coating inspector? ...or a coating manufacturer's technical representative? Were the manufacturer's environmental constraints and cure times strictly observed? Are there written records to substantiate any of this?

All of the above must necessarily be answered and documented, to prove that the coating system was properly applied in the first place, before any vandalism prosecution can proceed. It seems that Kash Patel and the FBI have some homework to do.

I see some more “grand jury no-bills” in the near future. Deserved if they charge someone with pulling a bit on a loose previously torn bit of blue paint.

If you don’t see - regardless of all the other corruption, bad behavior, villainy in the world - that this is ugly behavior, if you’re a leader of any political party in the US and you don’t discourage your supporters from this sort of vandalism . . . there is something wrong with your thought processes. It really is a sign of mental illness.

MAGA has some very detailed ideas as to how vandals harmed the Reflecting Pool. Could it be the result of inside knowledge of what some of them did to the pool?

And what about the 8647 traced in the grass on the National Mall, presumably laid down under the watchful eye of the National Guard?

I smell false flag operations.

Smilin' Jack said...

Touching a piece of lining floating on the surface is not vandalism. If you get your house painted and a week later you can strip the paint with your bare hands, you have a defective paint job. Trump needs to rip it all up and try again, with a different contractor.

Left Bank of the Charles said...

Consider who might have a motive and the timing in connection with the 250th celebration.

The J6 cop-beating hooligans were all set to get $1M apiece on average from Trump’s $1.776B slush fund. Then the fund gets 86ed. That’s a big financial blow and crushed their dreams of how they were going to spend it. This is a crowd that has a penchant for destroying public property if they don’t get their way. Suddenly 8647 appears in the grass on the National Mall and algae appears in the Reflecting Pool.

Coincidence?

bagoh20 said...

"I smell false flag operations."

A shower will probably fix that.

Ampersand said...

Public monuments are nearly always vulnerable to vandalism. I can think of lots of things that could be dumped in the reflecting pool in modest quantity that would instantly alter the chemical balance and rapidly change the wave length of the light reflecting from the surface. The result will be a public monument to the unhinged ferocity of Trump Derangement.

bagoh20 said...

75% of J6 defendants did nothing violent or destructive. 20% never entered the building. Hundreds more only entered and did nothing but walk around escorted by cops. All convicted or pled rather than be ruined.

It’s almost like driving your really heavy armored presidential limo on fresh sealant and then dumping thousands of gallons of hydrogen peroxide in the pool was a bad idea.

Pouring hydrogen peroxide into the pool where the sealant hasn’t properly cured attacks and breaks down the polymer chains of the paint — causing it to bubble and lose adhesion. Thus peeling.

Yes Peachy. It sounds like were on the same page. I, like you, embrace Donald J Trump creating a false, face saving narrative as to why this project was such a collossal boondoggle/failure.
It would not do MAGAt nation any good to admit that our dear leader is grasping at straws in laying blame for this.

I feel like we haven't heard enough about aunt tifa's involvement in this act of terrorism.

~Actual findings from a recent polling.

bagoh20 said...

He's not running for anything.
Abraham Lincoln's estimated approval rating dropped as low as 25%. Doing the right thing to overcome institutional evils is usually unpopular at first.

bagoh20 said...

Trump's main opposition is Congress and the media.

The approval rating of the U.S. Congress is 10% as of April 2026, with 86% of adults disapproving, according to the most recent Gallup polling data. This ties the record high for disapproval in the poll's 50-year history.

Public trust in the U.S. mass media has reached historic lows, with only 28% of Americans expressing a "great deal" or "fair amount" of confidence in the media.

bagoh20 said...

Congress and the media's low approval is decades in the making. Trump's depends on current events and is fickle.

FortheloveofIce said...
