Although we did just discover a distillery/brewery around the block that has sold - or rented - us their "mug club," a discount on drinks and food for an annual fee that they prorated for us for the remainder of our month in Toronto.

We have a Canadian-dual-citizenship friend who intends to visit during the world cup, having flight benefits on United. We're warning him that even though he's coming from afar, he might not make it because, you know, soccer - he, as a family member of a retired employee, has the lowest possible status for space-available flights. He is also a vegan, which is always a challenge! But he's got a room with us if he can make it here, and we are scouting out restaurant options, I not being an accomplished vegan cook.

Sam Goldwyn put his finger on Welles' problem back in the 50s. "Orson needs a co-writer". But the Welles could never admit that. After 1946, he only wanted to direct films that he wrote, and had almost complete control over.

I remember going through a corporate corruption seminar where management members were instructed on the principles of prudent associations and above-board ethical practices. The focus was on preserving the reputational credibility of the Company in all matters. Contracting, social occasions, official awards, anything that involved company representation.

Isn't it funny how all of these kinds of programs are based on ensuring that the appearance of impropriety is something to be avoided? Considerable training effort was put in place to codify this as a standard behavior set.

And yet, in modern politics, this ethos has long been discarded. Impropriety reigns, and when it's noted, we get the 'without evidence' belligerence.

They've added additional obstacles relating to power consumption, environmental studies, requirements for non-carbon-based energy supplies, so on. This, on top of a decade of NIMBYism and refusals to allow gas and oil pipeline construction to proceed to meet existing demands.

I'm starting to wonder if we're seeing the advent of a new wave of economic decline. In the 80's, it was shipping of heavy industrial manufacturing demand to overseas suppliers that resulted in the Rust Belt phenomenon, something that the Midwest still struggles with today, something that still has an effect on the US economy.

New York state, and in particular New York City, is seeing economic flight of corporations and wealthy taxpayers. Now they are throttling modern expansion, making it difficult to justify business investment.

Will the breakneck pace of the digital A.I. age place them at a disadvantage on a scale that make recovery impossible, as new centers of power establish themselves in regions that encourage growth?

What would be a good name for this modern rust belt-like phenomenon? It is taking shape in the Northeast - Maryland, New York, Massachusetts, so forth, and the Pacific seaboard states, California, Seattle, Washington.; 6/8/26, 12:03 AM

Great harm has been done to American standing in the world community. There must be a reckoning. Just who bought what?

America has greatly weakened all of its traditional alliances and relationships with the other democracies. For what? A cesspool in the Middle East?

One has little idea how the Israeli election is going to turn out. But most likely future American elections are going to signal large course changes.
