"Politicians’ constant compulsion to blame the gap between policy victories and political support simply on poor communications, or worse, poor 'messaging,' is a bit too pat..."

"... both self-serving and self-exonerating. If only they knew about all the great things I’ve done! But Biden — who, by late in his term, 'had become among the most inaccessible presidents in modern history,' Timothy Naftali of Columbia University writes — did himself few favors on that front. 'He did not just fail to tout his achievements; he seldom even tried,' Michael Kazin, a historian at Georgetown, complains.... In her memoir, Jill Biden reimagines her husband’s communications struggles as something between a mistake and a virtue. 'While Joe was in office, I think he and I both erred on the side of silence, dignity and letting news cycles run their course,' she explains.... 'We were trying so hard to reassure everyone that we didn’t take the time to acknowledge that he looked very unwell in that debate, to say to the public: 'Yes. That was bad, no doubt.'"

Writes Carlos Lozada, in "The Verdict on Biden Is In" (NYT).

By late in his term? Hell, where was he on the campaign trail in 2020? How many voters got to see him then?

The verdict of history on the Biden Administration was that it was the worst Presidency in US history.

1. Wild and unnecessary inflation.
2. Open borders with millions of illegal aliens allowed into the country.
3. He let Russia invade Ukraine. Death toll in the hundreds of thousands.
4. Joe let his wife and staff exercise the powers of the President.
5. The election was stolen.
6. Billions given to friends of the Dems.
7. He pushed the CAGW scam that cost taxpayers and automakers billions.
8. Criminal lawfare on Trump.
9. Hunter Biden.
10. Plenty more.

Biden's failing mental state is the thing they want to talk about.
I think they're still amazed and even proud they got away with it as long as they did. They almost made it to the end of his term before the curtain was pulled back by their hubris.
What they don't want to talk about is their performance and Biden's flagrant corruption.

Michael Kazin is former (and at heart still) SDS. Biden did try to tout "Bidenomics," but nobody was buying it. The guy was always boasting about something or other, from passing the "Inflation Reduction Act" to curing cancer and "beating Medicare." The problem wasn't the messaging. It was that Bidenism was a dead end.

This continuing effort by Team Biden to convince everybody that they didn't see what everyone obviously did see, seems both pointless and counterproductive. Bizarre, especially given how desperate the Dems are to get to the 'Joe who?' phase of politics.

NYT and the Democrats (is there a difference?) would like to pretend the verdict is in, but it isn't -- not by a long shot. The jury hasn't even been empaneled, let alone presented with the prosecution's case. No one gives a flying fuck about Biden's supposed reluctance to tout his mythical accomplishments. His fellow grifters in the Ministry of Truth did that snow job 24-7 for decades. Read the indictment. It says nothing about FJB's fatal humility, but there are reams of allegations containing the phrase "10% for the Big Guy. Give us an impartial jury, not some cabal of bootlickers and pickpockets with Columbia J-school degrees, and let it ruminate on who the Big Guy is, what treasons and malfeasance he may have committed to demand that ten percent, and from whom.

"Dignity". Yes, that's the word that always comes to mind when I think about the Bidens and how they avoided facing Joe's decline.

The article is behind a paywall, as usual. As far as I’m concerned the final verdict on Joe Biden’s tenure was written in the results of the 2024 General Election, with Trump’s handily winning the popular vote.

The reelection of Trump is all that saved the Biden Presidency from being the most damaging in history, and it's still up there near the top with Buchanan and Obama.

The two most primitive psychological coping strategies are (1) denial and (2) projection. Biden's mental decline and ghosting of the public, plus embedded TDS, are excellent examples of how these strategies play out in practice.

If not for Team Democrat reinforcing denialistic messages, the wishful thinking would have collapsed years and years ago. But ego. But the party of science. But the party that "took down" Joseph McCarthy, Vietnam, divorce laws, abortion laws, Christianity in schools, and Nixon. "We are always right about everything."

Remember the Biden campaign events with a few dozen cars parked around a stage with masked people watching him like a drive-in showing a silent film as he embarrassingly fumbled though words. And that was before he got the most votes in history by a lot. Yep, totally believable.

I lived in New Hampshire when Dukakis was running in the primary there. His events were all staged and private. One took place right next door to the office where I worked at the time. I think he bused his supporters up from Massachusetts. George H. W. Bush was out shaking hands, his motorcade darting two and fro across the state. I missed him at the polling place by fifteen minutes, but I voted for him anyway. I passed Dick Gephardt on the sidewalk while out getting lunch, the day after he won Iowa, and boy was he looking like the cock of the walk.

Trump has been the candidate to keep the pressing of the flesh with the people alive, TBH. Imagine Joe Biden wading into polling places and shaking hands, or walking down the sidewalk. I think that Joe Biden pretty much killed the New Hampshire way of doing personal politics as a test before going national.

I wonder what would happen if a Democrat President was elected that was highly competent and successful doing good things for the country. The media is so habituated to lying that they might not be able to tell that truth. I would expect stories about how he could lift a tractor with one hand, and leap tall buildings in a single bound.

bagoh20 said...

Yesterday I saw that iconic video of Dukakis driving the tank with the helmet on. I'm glad he lost, but I don't understand what was wrong with that. It looked fine. Same with the Howard Dean scream. That seemed enthusiastic and fine to me too. John Kerry in the NASA bunny suit was a pretty bad look, but nothing like that should move votes.
A candidate speaking gibberish and losing his train of thought definitely should.

Unfroze billions in Iranian assets, on September 11. Their terrorist proxies, Hamas, invaded Israel less than a month later, murdering and raping and kidnapping innocent people, including multiple Americans held hostage again.

Projected weakness abroad while he targeted pro-lifers here in the USA.

Ran for re-election while dishonestly pretending he had zero health issues. No respect for the voters, even in his own party. Refused to step down, in part because he had no trust in his DEI hire for vice-president, a woman who had almost no support among Democrats and dropped out before the first primary in 2020.

I cannot think of a single success in the Biden administration. Multiple failures. Easily the worst president of my lifetime.

Criminal lawfare on Trump.

That's an understatement. Four simultaneous criminal prosecutions in an election year. They charged him with 88 felonies. Manufactured a sexual assault charge from a crazy woman. The FBI invaded Trump's home and the Democrats all bragged about how they were going to get his mug shot and then lock him up. Banana republic stuff. And the American people rejected his justice department and his lies. Joe Biden is a disgrace to our Constitution and our rule of law. Worse than Obama, worse than Clinton. You'd have to go back over a century to find a president worse than Joe Biden.

For that to happen, the party base would have to dramatically shift away from the cities, the universities, and NGOs back towards "Middle America." Does anyone seriously think that could happen anytime soon?

Big Mike said...

@bagoh20 (1:05 pm), don’t forget Jimmy Carter! Between the three you mention, Carted, Wilson, and LBJ you have to be looking at the six worst Presidents in the history of the USA.

And I lived through four of them.

You know that Joe Biden told Putin that Ukraine was joining NATO and that we were going to put nuclear weapons on their soil, 200 miles from Moscow. That’s more than “letting” him, that’s giving him no choice. He thought that Russia would collapse in weeks or months due to sanctions and we could break it up into smaller states that we could deal with. Well it hasn’t, and Iran didn’t collapse like a house of cards either, and Iran was only attacked for the theoretical possibility of a nuclear weapon that, should they use it offensively, would lead to the complete destruction of their country.

Maybe it’s time that we try something different. I really think that Trump is coming around to this.

She was right to "let the news cycle run their course". Those news cycle did a far better job of projecting Joe's sharpness and acuity than Joe did. His big mistake was agreeing to that debate. He should have stayed cloistered. Let Morning Joe explain Sunset Joe's extraordinary grasp of world affairs and ice cream cones.
