Platner presents his weary face to the camera

Chris Hayes confronts Platner with the damaging accusations that the NYT published.

He was, he say, "not a good boyfriend." He was "self-medicating with alcohol." It was a "pretty dark period' of his life.

Option 1 - he wins next Tuesday (likely). Gop runs on him nationwide.
Option 2 - he loses, but he will get 30% of the vote plus and those who voted for him love him. So, Collins wins by 20 or more. GOP still runs on him and lefties nationwide are pissed at “establishment “ dems. Heard a lefty professor in Virginia this weekend - he says, “we need more Graham Platners”

This is just entertainment at this point.

You can't brazen your way through just anything.

There’s been a major cultural shift accelerated by Trump, where many voters now see scandal coverage as establishment sabotage. These stories are no longer automatically disqualifying. That’s exactly what’s happening in Maine. Voters are brushing it off as a DC issue pushed by the chattering classes and Democratic insiders. They care more about cost of living and Platner’s populist economic message and are prepared to overlook the controversy.

To be clear, Platner is not Donald Trump when it comes to women. This involves consenting adults, as far as we know.

Still, Susan Collins consistently outperforms her polls and will be very hard to beat. Maine’s electorate is older, the average voting age around 52 and many voters, especially women, are turned off by Platner’s issues.

Democrats are running the wrong candidate for the state. Platner’s style might work in deep-red states like West Virginia or Montana, but Maine requires winning back centrist and conservative Democrats who regularly split tickets for Collins. Platner isn’t the candidate who does that.

Yeah, I never quite understood the appeal of Sanders to his voters. He had/has the ability to stay on message, and the message was appealing to them, but personally he seemed very off-putting; the accent, the crazy man look, the coldness and lack of humor - I just never got it. Platner, for all of his issues, is different from that.

As someone who served in the Marines as well, you should know that certain units in the Corps have long used Nazi symbolism in logos, etc. the Deathshead and the runic SS have been a part of (for example) the Scout Snipers for a very long time. If you go back to the era when people read books, you can find pictures of it. The Corps didn’t like it, but they also didn’t fully stamp out.

Now I’m not justifying it, nor commenting on it in any way, other than pointing out that it was a fact that you’d find Marines and units using Nazi symbolism well into the 90’s and probably later, when Platner served. It was looked at, in context, much differently than today.

The issue here is less about “is he a Nazi,” and more about having an embarrassing tattoo tgat he won’t just come clean about.

He presents it as the hero's journey. It's an inspiring story of transformation and redemption. He had the courage to face down those demons, and he has won. Let's not look to the past. Let's look to the future.......Sadly, during a dark period of his life, he lost his way and dated a Republican. Most of his current problems stem from that. As Republicans do, that woman is lying about everything. It goes without saying that those contemporaneous diary entries were forged so there's no need for Hayes to probe deeper.....Let's hope that he didn't text message with some underage Republican. Who knows that lies she'll tell.

Exactly. Except Hegseth didn't actually have a Nazi tattoo, he wasn't a drunkard, he didn't abuse women. They suggested Hegseth had done those things and then said he was unfit. Platner is on record of doing such things, and no problem because he'll be a reliable Democrat vote to protect their power.

Lyndsey Fifield is on X

She's been trying to sabotage his candidacy for months, apparently.

"Yes, the day I saw him announce he was running I wanted to make sure people knew he had a Nazi tattoo -- and I was terrified that he knew it was me."

"I also knew how dangerous it is to become the target of a narcissist -- so even long after our relationship ended I continued to be upbeat any time he reached out."

She gets asked why she was dating somebody with a Nazi tattoo, which remains a very good question.

Andre, Herr Platner didn't join until 2004 IIRC (it was definitely after the Iraq campaign started because he's been slandering Collins for that vote but joined after it) so your claims about 1990s standards don't wash.

Also the Nazi tattoo is far more about the hypocrisy of leftists like low T IEE than Platner per se.

"Graham Platner & Al Qaeda’s Congressman-Elect from New Jersey Are the Consequence of Democrats Failing the “David Duke Test” with Mamdani"

Peachy said...

democrats have an Al-Qaeda wing:

"With Democrats rapidly sliding down the most odious of slippery slopes, it does not seem far-fetched for them to soon embrace Sharia law, pogroms, and other once unthinkable “solutions.” It was bad enough when Elizabeth Warren endorsed Graham Planter in March, gushing that he’d ”flip Maine and then actually deliver change for working people.” But after even more awful revelations about Platner, Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer met with the Nazi-loving Democrat and proudly announced that he still supports Platner. The most polite term I can think of to describe Schumer’s action is to call him a kapo. I have Jewish friends who use much harsher language.

There’s more...

Chris Rabb just won the Democrat nomination for a congressional seat in Philadelphia. With no Republican opponent, this anti-semitic “Democrat Socialist of America” will be representing the Democrats in Congress. Rabb has never criticized the Palestinian mass-murder of Jews on October 6, but he refers to the Israeli response as a “genocide.” In response to the Hannukah mass murder of Jews at Australia’s Bondi Beach, Mr. Rabb shared a post on Instagram alleging that the massacre was a “Zionist false flag.” Not a single Democrat member of Congress will condemn Mr. Rabb or declare his unfitness to be a part of their caucus.

And there are still more of these types likely heading to Congress after next November’s election. Darializa Avila Chevalier is running for a congressional seat in New York City. She is endorsed by Mamdani and her positions include eliminating police, eliminating national borders, eliminating free enterprise, and, of course, working to eliminate the state of Israel. She doesn’t specifically articulate an endorsement for the murder of Jews, she just plans to celebrate when Israel and its Jewish inhabitants “suddenly disappear.”

If Democrats had not failed the “David Duke test” with Mamdani, perhaps these elections would have turned out differently. Or maybe not. But the Democrats now have no moral authority to prevent their Al-Qaeda wing from asserting its agenda and taking on leadership roles."

Andre said...

Christopher B, the use of Nazi symbols was extant in the Corps in the ‘90s, but it does not at all mean they weren’t still in 2005, or whatever. I’m betting there were not stamped out until sometime later than that.

But again, I am not justifying it, or really commenting on Platner, other than saying that it is a fact that a certain number of guys, not just in the Marine Corps, got stupid tattoos than to modern eyes are hugely inappropriate. It doesn’t mean he’s not an ass, but it also doesn’t by itself indicate as much as being implied.

Andre said...

If you google “marine scout sniper Nazi symbol” you will find that it was in use in that community at least until 2012.

Again, not justifying it, nor saying it makes Platner a good guy, just saying that it was a different world. And that he should have come clean about it, if it is just a case of stupid military tattoo. It’s not like he’s alone there.

Tina Trent said...

I can understand PTSD after combat, lying to girlfriends, sexting during marriage, but Platner cannot stop lying about his work (he is not an oysterman); he claims to be a communist (which is at least true because he seems to live off others), and his persistence in lying about being who he is not.

But Maine voters are falling for his "working class man" persona and are too foolish to question his ideology, so I guess they'll elect a bad boyfriend to the Senate. How he makes it six years in DC without a sex scandal, we will see.

I wonder how much longer American Jews are going to put up with what's going on in their beloved Democrat Party and more generally across the Left. A liberal Jew of my acquaintance is absolutely convinced a second Holocaust is coming, perpetrated by a Muslim-leftist alliance. I told him that if so, he and his family could find safe haven at my cabin and barn deep in the mountains of Arizona, but I would make them all say "MAGA" as a shibboleth to permit entry.

Graham Platner is running the bad boy playbook on the voters of Maine. First he bonded with them, now his true self is being revealed. They’ll probably stick with him, for a while anyway.

If I were a Maine voter, I’d be voting for Janet Mills in the primary. The general would be harder, I might vote for Platner to keep J.D. Vance out of the tiebreaker seat. But if it looked like Republicans would be keeping control of the Senate without Maine, I’d be voting for Janet Mills again.
